GOLD EX B2 FOR SCHOOLS / UNIT 1 P 13 COMP & SUP & TOO & ENOUGH

GOLD EXPERIENCE B2 FOR SCHOOLS PAGE 12 COMPARATIVE FORMS.

1) NORMAL COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

You know that if we want to compare TWO people, animals, things or groups, we can use a
COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVE.
-(formed by adding ER to the normal adjective) e.g. John is TALLER than Jack.
-(formed by putting MORE before the normal adjective) e.g. John is MORE INTERESTING than Jack.
-(formed with an IRREGULAR COMPARATIVE adjective) e.g. John is a BETTER person than Jack.

2 ) NORMAL SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVES

If we want to compare THREE or more people, animals, things or groups, we can use a
SUPERLATIVE ADJECTIVE.
-(formed by adding EST to the normal adjective. E.g. Jack is THE TALLEST student in the class.
-(formed my putting THE MOST before the normal adjective. E.g. Jack is THE MOST
INTERESTING STUDENT in the class.
- (Formed by putting an IRREGULAR SUPERLATIVE adjective). E.g. John is THE BEST student
in the class.

3) ADJECTIVES OF EQUALITY

These are used when we want to say that two things (etc) are the same.
-(formed by putting (just) AS + normal adjective AS) e.g. John is just as tall as Jack.
-(the negative is formed with NOT AS/SO + adjective AS) e.g. John is not as /so tall as Jack.

4) TOO + ADJECTIVE = DEMASIADO + ADJ.

When something is MORE THAN NECESSARY we can put TOO before the normal adjective.
Eg. Jack is TOO TALL to be a jockey. This curry is TOO SPICY to eat. I’m TOO SCARED to
enter that house.

5) NOT + adj + ENOUGH = NO LO SUFICIENTEMENTE +ADJ

We can use this construction to say that something or someone is not sufficient.
Eg. Jack is NOT SHORT ENOUGH to be a jockey. This curry is NOT MILD ENOUGH to eat. I’m
NOT BRAVE ENOUGH to enter that house.

6) THE …..ER, THE….ER / THE MORE …. / THE MORE …..

= Cuanto más….. , más …..

We can use a construction with double comparative adjectives for emphasis and to show that
something or someone is changing continually.
Eg. The older I get, the more forgetful I am. = Cuánto más Viejo me hago, más olvidadizo soy.
Eg. The richer he gets, the meaner he is. = Cuanto más rico se hace, más tacaño es.
Eg. The harder He Works, the more tired he feels. = Cuando más duro trabaja, más cansado se siente.

7) Adverbs of degree (like MUCH, FAR, A LOT, A LITTLE, QUITE etc can be used before comparative
adjectives to modify and emphasize them.

Eg. My brother is FAR STRONGER than his friends. Alison is A LITTLE MORE INTELLIGENT than her
sister. You are QUITE TALLER than your fellow pupils. Mike is MUCH MORE TALKATIVE then me.
