Assignment: Urban Planning in the Philippines

Figure 1: EDSA1
According to the United Nations Human Settlements Programs, the fastest growing cities
today are in Asia and among of which is the Metro Manila. It is also said that the Philippines will
be the 16th largest economy in 2050 together with Mexico, Turkey and Argentina. But as see, a
large percentage of people living in these countries are the urban poor who only have limited
access to basic public services and utilities such as education, healthcare, electricity, water, and
opportunities to have a better life. Urban planning is also known as environmental planning here
in the Philippines. Urban planning does not only focus on the aspect of physical beauty of the city,
but is also deals with shape of roads, architectural styles, number of parks, meeting places, what
kind of jobs people will have access to, pollution generation, types of transportation that the people
can use etc. In other countries, their urban planning principles facilitate and promote quality of
life, economic development, and social inclusion to achieve long-term development goals.
Communities should thrive, have long-term growth and renewal, and communities should thrive
in the long-term. It is also important to stick to the plan once they are implemented.

The American architect Daniel Burnham had a grand plan for Manila back in 1905. He
used as a comparison to the Manila the bay to that of Naples, Pasig river to the River Seine, and
the smaller bodies of water to the canals of Venice. Architect Daniel Burnham has a beautiful
vision for Manila to make it a modern and livable city with the three elements as the forefront of
the design. Enhanced waterways also to be used as means of transportation, abundant foliage at
the waterfront, efficient road systems useful public facilities, public spaced like parks,
promenades, and neatly arranged public buildings. The architect may have a beautiful plan for
Manila, but looking and experiencing the present-day condition, it is supposed that the plan that
could have been the answer to a more planned Manila was never followed. Everyone experiences
the traffic, the noise of the honking cars and modes of public transportation, pollution, heavy traffic
caused by extension of Light Railway Transit, building of skyways to lessen the traffic etc. In
addition to these, the population in Manila is getting bigger and bigger as people from the
provinces choose to work and stay in Manila because of the opportunities that Manila has is not
the same of what they presently have in their own hometowns. A place or an area can only carry
or serve up to a certain number of people in order to have better way of living, but because of
this, the density of Manila have gotten bigger.
