INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name, register number and class on all the work you hand in.
Answer all questions from numbers 1 to 8 before attempting the Bonus Question number 9.
Write your answers and working on the separate writing paper provided.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a HB pencil for any diagrams or graphs.
Do not use staples, paper clips, glue or correction fluid.
Omission of essential working will result in loss of marks.
The use of an approved scientific calculator is expected, where appropriate.
If the degree of accuracy is not specified in the question, and if the answer is not exact, give
the answer to three significant figures. Give answers in degrees to one decimal place.
For π, use either your calculator value or 3.142, unless the question requires the answer in
terms of π.

INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.
The total number of marks for this paper is 50.

This document consists of 6 printed pages.

The diagram shows a right-angled triangle ABD with point C lying on BD.
AD = 21 cm, BC = 15 cm and ∠ADB = 22°.
Calculate
(a) the length of AB, [2]
(b) ∠BAC. [2]

1 3(x−1) 2

In the diagram, ABC, AFD and BFE are straight lines. F is the midpoint of AD
and BE. AB = 4 cm and AC = 8 cm.
(a) Show that triangles CAD and BAF are similar. [3]
(b) Prove that triangle ABF is congruent to triangle DEF. [3]
(c) State one relationship between AC and ED. [1]
area of triangle BAF
(d) Find . [1]

6 A rectangular aquarium has length 3 m, width 2.5 m and height 1.2 m.

(a) Given 1 m3 = 1000 l, find the volume, in litres, of the aquarium. [1]
Tap P fills the aquarium with water at x litres per minute. Tap Q fills the same
aquarium with water at a rate of 5 more litres per minute than tap P.
(b) Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the time taken, in minutes, to
fill the tank by using
(i) tap P, [1]
(ii) tap Q. [1]
(c) It takes 4 hours longer to fill the aquarium with water using tap P as
compared to tap Q.
Form an equation in x and show that it reduces to
2x2 + 10x − 375 = 0. [3]
(d) Solve the equation 2x2 + 10x − 375 = 0. [2]
(e) Hence, find the time taken to fill the aquarium if both taps P and Q are
turned on together. Give your answer in hours and minutes, correct to the
nearest minute. [3]

7 A stone is thrown from the top of a cliff next to the sea. The height, h metres, of
the stone above the sea level t seconds after it is released can be modeled by the
equation h = (14 + 5t)(5 − t). The diagram below shows part of the graph.

70

h = (14 + 5t)(5 − t)

0 5 t

(a) Show that the time taken for the stone to be at its highest point above the
sea level is 1.1 seconds. [2]
(b) Find the maximum height of the stone above the sea level. [1]
(c) The stone is 72 m above sea level at t = t1 and t = t2 . These values of t are
the solutions to the equation −5t2 + At + B = 0.
Find the values of A and B. [3]

8 Derren wants to mount a TV onto the wall in his living room and does a research on
the ideal height that the TV should be mounted. The information that he needs is
summarised in the table below.

Symbol/ Item Description

Formula S
D=
0.55
Formula M = E + D × 0.22 (refer to Figure 1)
D Optimum viewing distance from the TV to where the viewer
is seated
S TV size in terms of diagonal length in inches and is expressed
as an integer (refer to Figure 2)
M Ideal TV mounting height (from the floor to the midpoint of
TV)
E Eye level height from the floor

It is given that 1 metre = 39.37 inches.

(a) The sofa in the living room is 2.2 m from the TV wall.
(i) Express 2.2 m in inches. [1]
(ii) What is the maximum TV size, S, in inches, that Derren should buy if
he watches TV from the sofa? [1]
(iii) Derren’s eye level height is 1.1 m. Calculate the ideal TV mounting
height, M, in metres. [1]
(b) The ratio of the width to the height of a TV is 16:9. Calculate the width, in
metres, of a 50-inch TV. [3]
(c) The Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers recommends that
the viewing angle should not exceed 35° from the viewer’s eyes to the top
of the screen. (https://www.practical-home-theater-guide.com/Tv-viewing-
distance.html). Assuming the TV is mounted in the same position as in (aiii)
and the height of the TV is 62.2 cm, calculate the shortest distance that the
sofa should be placed from the wall. [3]
