1. What makes a good negotiator? Answer the question expressing your opinion in
no more than 200 words.

What makes a good negotiator?

You can’t be a good negotiator overnight, the art of negotiating learns from books and
practice.
There is a lot of information, technical knowledge and methods that can be learned and
learned from books. But experience is gained through direct negotiations, confrontation is
particularly tough and merciless.
In order to become a good negotiator, you must acquire in time certain qualities:
-A strong negotiator is personable, but strong willed. They listen well to words, but
pay attention to subtext and body language.
- Quick thinking. Negotiating can be stressful, and sometimes requires making big
decisions quickly.
-Intelligence. Business negotiators must assess their needs and the needs of others,
coming up with compromises that benefit everyone’s interests – often on the fly.
-Confidence. Negotiation requires asserting one’s will. Strong negotiators project their
confidence and strong will throughout the conversation.
-Ability to anticipate others. A successful negotiation requires strong listening skills.
-Compassion and people skills. Negotiating is a social skill.
-Making things sound good. A good negotiator goes into a conversation willing to
make concessions.
-Knowledge of how much to let on. Negotiation is all about presenting the facts in a
way that is convincing.
Negotiation is an art. Negotiation is like a chess game.
2. Complete the passages below, using words from A and B in the correct form

The trade unions are fighting for salary increases, and a shorter working week. The managing
director, however, has rejected this proposal, saying that the workers are already overpaid and
under worker. It looks very much like negotiations are about to break up. A strike seems
increasingly likely.

Ours is a truly international company, we are active in markets throughout the world. Most
of our managers are bilingual and are encouraged to learn a third language as well as
studying for graduating diplomas in business.

The range we introduced in the 1990s has now become outdated and we are losing our
market share. We have decided to launch a new product range which will include more
expensive market lines. Our marketing department is confident that these will catch and
bring the success we would like. We expect the launch to go well as it has all been carefully
planned.
