METHOD STATEMENT FOR PLATE BEARING TEST

1.0 SCOPE

This method covers the estimation of the bearing capacity of soil in place by means of
field loading tests for the proposed site. lt gives information on the soil only to a depth of
about two diamelers of the bearing plate and takes into account only part of the effect of
time. The tests are canied out in accordance to BS 1377 : Part 9 : 1990.

TEST PROCEDURES

Selection of test area

No big stone, cracks and damages on the surface is ensured at test points. The test is to be
performed 1 feet / 0.3 meters below the existing ground level.

Preoare test location

Excavator is used to dug the soil and create a pit of 0.3 meters from the ground level. Test
surface is prepared by digging up the ground. The test surface is leveled carefully. The
surface is checked and all loose material and any embedded fragments are removed. The
area is ensured to be protected from sunlight or any situation that may effect the soil surface
condition.

Set the test apoaratus

A thin layer of clean dry sand applied to the test area surface. The 300mm diameter steel
plate, hydraulic iacks and iron/steel extensions are set up. Four dial gauges is fixed acting
against the under-side of the steel extensions that supports the load.

 2.L The plate under test shall be 2 cycle subiected up to:
a) 1't cycle - Four (4) loading & Two(2) unloading stages
b) 2"d cycle - Four(4) loading & Two(2) unloading stages

2.2 Plate settlement shall be measured by fou(4) dial gauges reading 0.01mm for
each loading and unloading. The gauge readlngs shall be taken as in attached
table.
Average settlement = Dialgauge 1 reading + Dial gauge 2 reading
+ Dial gauge 3 reading + Dial gauge 4 reading

2.3 lf total settlement exceeds 25mm at any time, the test will be terminated.

3.0 REPORT

The test report shall contain the following information:

1. Proiect details including the site location.

2. Testing date, list of personnel.
3. Tabulation of load - settlement - time data.
