CANTON — St. John’s
had almost 365 days to think
about — and mull over the
bitter taste in their mouths
because of — the last-second
loss to Norwalk St. Paul in
last year’s Division VI state
title game.
Poor Shadyside.
The Blue Jays completed
their fourth unbeaten season
(15-0) with a dominating,
nearly perfect 77-6 victory
over the Tigers Friday after-
noon at Canton’s Fawcett
Stadium.
In the process, they set
several records: 77 was the
most points scored in any
round of the playoffs in any
division; 71 was the largest
margin of victory ever in the
state finals in any division;
their 416 yards rushing (on 45
attempts) was the most ever in
the Division VI title game and
fifth-best ever in any division.
It also set the program record
of points scored.
They outgained the
Tigers 552-184 and had
23 first downs to eight for
Shadyside.

Feds say changes
could affect Ohio’s
schools grant
COLUMBUS (AP) —
Federal officials say they can’t
assure Ohio that its $400 mil-
lion federal education grant is
safe, as an incoming governor
who seeks a significant change
to state education policy has
said.
Republican Gov.-elect John
Kasich has said U.S. Education
Secretary Arne Duncan
assured him in a conversa-
tion last month that the money
was safe even if he scraps
an education funding formula
supported by Democratic Gov.
Ted Strickland.
A spokeswoman for Duncan
says whether Ohio gets all
the Race to the Top money
it narrowly won in a national
competition will depend on
whether state officials signifi-
cantly change their plans for
using it. That won’t be known
until the changes are made and
evaluated, said press secretary
Sandra Abrevaya.
“While we sincerely hope
to see every dollar get deliv-
ered as planned, we cannot
make any commitments about
funding until our staff ana-
lyzes any proposed changes
and makes a determination as
to whether they significantly
alter the plan, or are approv-
able,” she said in an e-mail.
Ohio’s winning grant
application proposed a strat-
egy for spending the money to
improve high school gradua-
tion rates, significantly boost
college enrollment among 18-
and 19-year-olds, and close
gaps in achievement among
students and between Ohio
and other states. The state has
received approval to spend the
first $100 million of the grant.
Strickland has said he was
told by Duncan that Ohio’s
grant would be in jeopardy if
the “evidence-based model” for
school funding championed by
the governor, which is linked
to practices proven to help
boost student performance, is
removed from the plan.
“It’s mystifying that this
has been portrayed as a ques-
tion in the media when the
U.S. Department of Education
has been so clear,” said
Strickland spokeswoman
Amanda Wurst.
Kasich said no strings were
attached to Duncan’s guarantee.
“I had what I can only
describe as a great conversation
with the secretary,” Kasich told
reporters on a visit to northwest
Ohio the week the two talked.
“And I told him when it comes
to accountability, choice, and
high standards, where do I get
in line? He said, look, you’ll
have your money and we’ll be
great partners. And I said, could
I tell the media that, he said
absolutely.”
State education officials
also have said they believe
Ohio can retain the full grant
award even if the funding
formula is removed from the
state’s plan.
The bottom line seems to
be: Time will tell.
In an e-mail that Abrevaya
sent to members of Strickland’s
staff that week, she relayed her
efforts to “refute the assertions”
Kasich had made regarding
his conversation with Duncan.
States still needed to “maintain
fidelity to their plans” in order
to remain eligible for their
grants, she said in an e-mail
obtained by the AP through a
public records request.

on 2010, answers questions

ebrated its diamond anniver-
sary in 2010 and the area
administrator says making
information accessible to
beneficiaries continues to be
an area of focus.
“Social Security is the
nation’s most successful
domestic program. It’s easy
to look back at what a dif-
ference it has made over the
past 75 years and 2010, our
diamond anniversary year,
has been full of accom-
plishments. We launched
an important new service in
2010: The online Medicare
application. It allows people
reaching age 65, who opt
to delay receiving retire-
ment benefits, to apply for
Medicare coverage from
their computer in as little
as 10 minutes,” said Lima
Social Security Manager
Steve Richards. “We also
reunited the original cast of

mote the new application.

me among those who wish
not to see what is horrifying-
ly apparent. Having recently
arrived at the conclusion
that the worst-case scenarios
we’ve been hearing about for
months (and even years to
those more alert) might be
true, I feel my optimism flag-
ging.
Oh, but it’s not really that
bad, we tell ourselves. We’ve
hit hard times before. We’ll
manage. But what if the worst
really is yet to come?
Alas, the facts do not give
optimists much to work with.
If we do not get our financial
house in order, few scary sce-
narios recently described by
doomsayers will be reviewed

For prompts to assume the
fetal curl, one need read no
further than the Dec. 3 issue
of Foreign Affairs, where
Roger Altman, former U.S.
deputy treasury secretary,
and Richard Haass, president
of the Council on Foreign
Relations, describe a nearly
apocalyptic future — just
around the bend -- if we do
not act yesterday.
OK, today may do, but not
so much tomorrow.
Begin here: Within 10
years, the federal debt could
reach 90 percent of GDP.
No, wait, even that is “too
optimistic” given low rates of
economic growth, they say.
The latest report from the
International Monetary Fund
projects that the federal debt
could equal GDP by 2015.
The consequences of this
slide are profound, not just
at home but abroad as our
power is eclipsed by develop-
ing nations. This is a difficult
thought to grasp, not least
because it happened so sud-
denly in historical terms. As
Altman and Haass point out,
the national debt was only
about 35 percent of GDP just
12 years ago. Furthermore,
the debt had been shrink-
ing to the point that some
thought it might even be
paid off. With the 2001 and
2003 tax cuts now animat-
ing the professional bicker-
ers in Washington, the wars
in Iraq and Afghanistan, and
the prescription-drug benefit
to Medicare, we shifted our
fiscal policy so significantly
that we are faced with an era
of austerity.
Other factors include
a George W. Bush-era end
to budget rules to balance
spending and tax cuts. What
has transpired was not only
inevitable, but predictable.
To sum up:
“The eight years of the
Bush administration saw
the largest fiscal erosion in
American history.”
That’s a pretty unequivo-
cal indictment. Throw in the
financial and economic crisis
that hit just before the 2008
elections, and voila. Or how-
ever you say that in Chinese.
Most Americans prob-
ably figure they can muddle
through a deep recession.
Let’s face it, we could use
a little austerity around the
waistline. But how do we
manage a planet in which we
are no longer the final arbi-
ters of justice? Whatever one
may say about our flawed
history, few would argue that
the world would be better off
without us. When America
is no longer able to rally
her forces for good, the light
dims for civilization. If you
doubt it, we may yet get to
test the thesis.
The instability inherent in
the world’s biggest economy
being the world’s biggest bor-
rower is problematic beyond
the obvious. Not only will
we be limited in the extent to
which we can fight necessary
wars, but our financial con-
straints will affect homeland
security, intelligence and for-
eign aid, according to Haass
and Altman. Most impor-
tant, our global clout will be
increasingly diminished.
Haass and Altman offer
two scenarios: One, our pres-
ident and Congress get their
deficit-reduction act together.
Or, two, global capital mar-
kets will impose a solution,
which likely would be “ugly
and punitive.”
Doubtless we would all
prefer to fix things ourselves.
But the fix will not be a
product only of optimism.
It will require sacrifice and,
yes, a little suffering. The
great American strength and
will about which we’ve read
so much in our history books
will have to be resurrected.
The president of the United
States needs to say that.

CANTON — The Blue Jay
faithful followed their team to
Canton’s Fawcett Stadium for
the Division VI state football
championship. The
Jays destroyed the
Shadyside Tigers 77-6

there were plenty of people to
express an opinion.
“The senior class has defi-
nitely had a mission and they
realize the end is near and

Friday night, a 45-33 comeback
win over Trotwood-Madison
at Paul Brown Stadium. Last
year, the Mustangs lost 42-12 to
Cincinnati Winton Woods.
“I just didn’t want to let
the community down again,”
Washington said after Maple
Heights claimed its first team
title in any sport since winning
the 1974 wrestling champion-
ship.
“They were so behind us last
year and we got blown out, beat
bad and it hurt,” Washington
said. “The people stayed with
us, though, and now we’re bring-
ing the trophy home to them.”
The Mustangs (15-0) over-
came a 19-point deficit and five
missed extra-point attempts.
“I had no doubt these guys
would fight back,” coach Todd
Filtz said. “And I knew Shaq
would come through. On
Monday, he asked if I expected
