Structure
The book is divided into 6 units. Each unit contains an engaging authentic
text and is accompanied by two sets of questions for students. The first set is
based on reading skills specific to the text and these vary in accordance with
the proportionality of the CEPA exam and its specific categories. The second
set is based on vocabulary and corresponds directly to both the language
used in the reading as well as the CEPA vocabulary list. Finally, there are
supplementary vocabulary activities at the end of each unit to provide extra
practice. A full copy of the CEPA vocabulary list will feature at the back of the
book. The structure is uniform throughout the workbook:
Reading skills:
¢ Looking for specific pieces of information
¢ Finding the main idea of the text
¢ Identifying meaning from context
¢ Sequencing
¢ Pronouns
¢ Inferences
Vocabulary:
¢ Some target language established from the ‘meaning from context’
questions.
¢ Other vocabulary tested through CEPA-style MCQs.
¢ All vocabulary items relate to the official CEPA vocabulary list.
Vocabulary (supplementary):
¢ This section will include additional activities that extend and
complement the existing vocabulary questions.
CEPA wordlist (Appendix):
¢ The book will contain a vocabulary list for student and teacher
reference; this may be used beyond the confines of the Enrichment
course.
Rationale

Integrating Vocabulary and Reading

The rationale for these activities is to ensure that Cycle 3 students receive
maximum exposure to the CEPA vocabulary list. This is done by embedding
relevant words into the reading texts so students not only begin to hone
their reading skills, but also continually recycle the vocabulary to be
learnt.
The readings largely draw on authentic materials to provide students with
effective and engaging contexts. They also correspond to levels 7-9 on
the Flesch-Kincaid scale, again in keeping with the CEPA assessment.

Slim Gym

1. Brad Ranson was a member of his high school’s swim team. Aside
from going to the pool, though, he didn’t belong to a gym or own
Ministry of Education English Department - Sport :: 22

expensive exercise equipment. He realized he had to find other ways

to strengthen his body.
2. “I needed to keep up my work ethic out of season in order to help
myself when the season would start up again,” recalls Ranson, now 19.
“I also found that just stretching generally made me feel better, even
though I wasn’t working out every day.”
3. Whether you hope to play sports after high school or not, you know
how important it is to get exercise. But few teens can afford a gym. That
doesn’t mean you’re doomed to be out of shape. There are plenty
of ways to exercise without spending money, and many don’t require
you to leave the house.
4. First, decide when you can fit exercise into your schedule, even if it is
while you’re doing something else. “Instead of sitting on the couch and
watching TV, get down and work on your flexibility,” Ranson suggests.
“You can still get your entertainment and you will be helping your
body.”
5. Then, see where exercise can help you do the things you need to do
every day. That’s something Ranson has done for a while, especially
when he isn’t swimming regularly. “When I was out of season or had
some spare time, I’d go for a run and would also try to bike to closer
destinations instead of drive,” he says.
6. Basic exercises you’ve been doing for years— jumping jacks, push-
ups, crunches, running in place—are good ways to work out without
spending any money. Forget the expensive dumbbell sets. Just use
some heavy jugs you have around the house—a milk bottle, a jug of
laundry detergent, or even that huge bottle of spring water.
7. Maybe you just want to tone up, like 16-year-old Alex, who has been
a dancer since he was 4, participating in a modern dance group and
a tap dance group. But it wasn’t until recently that he focused on
getting other types of exercise in addition to dancing. “When I was
younger, dance and playing outside were my two forms of exercise,”
Alex says. “But now that I am in my teens I understand that having an
exercise routine is important, and it has helped me on my journey as
a dancer.”

Virtual Reality

Read the following text and answer the questions below:

1. The rise of social networks such as Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram has resulted in new
ways for people to communicate. The three-
dimensional technology (3D) of Virtual Reality
(VR) creates a new stage of communication
with an even higher level of interaction.

2. Virtual Reality (VR) is a great experience in

which a person enters a world that has lots of
images and sounds created by a computer.
This enables the person to move around in
the virtual world and see it from different
angles using 3D sensory devices, which send
and receive information and are worn as
goggles, gloves, or body suits.
Ministry of Education English Department - Virtual Reality :: 46

3. This technology is used in different applications

within a social world. Doctors can use VR
for watching surgical processes, in addition
to diagnosing a variety of illnesses and
addictions.
4. In the virtual world of Second Life, individuals
create their avatars to experience what they
cannot do in their real lives. For example, the
physically challenged can have the virtual
experience of walking, running and playing
sports, which may otherwise be very difficult
for them.

5. VR allows architects to design a virtual building

and discover any possible problems before
money is spent on such designs. Also, fashion
designers can put together fantastic creations
and see how they look before making their
collection.

6. VR is also used successfully in education. The

users can interact in 3D learning environments
such as job interviews, restaurants, or airports.
Furthermore, lots of universities and educational
centres have created locations in virtual worlds
to make studying from home easier.

7. Companies and organizations have found

virtual worlds can be used as new form of
marketing. They allow companies to benefit
from new markets. Some people actively buy
items online from eBay or IGE.com.
Reading

8. The borderline between the virtual and the

real world is unclear; this border will disappear
even more over time. Virtual worlds will
progress, for better or for worse, beyond their
gaming roots and will gradually become
main centres of business.

9. As new devices are continually developed,

mobile access and 3D gadgets will make
it easier to access virtual world spaces
daily. However, virtual reality can have
negative effects through misuse and
abuse. For example, students might
receive inappropriate cultural ideas from
virtual reality, in addition to learning a new
language. In other words, the cultural beliefs
of the VR programmers may transfer to young
learners.
Ministry of Education English Department - Virtual Reality :: 48

10. Children who spend too much time in a

virtual world may suffer from social isolation.
For example, children may practise the
target language at Al Iftar in Ramadan, but
they might not learn the spirit of Ramadan
and meaning of a family gathering and its
cultural values. As virtual reality becomes
more and more accessible, it can remove
a richness and depth of experience that
individuals can get in the real world.

Is your avatar ready for the virtual future?

Making inferences involves using personal experience/
Exam background knowledge along with the information
Tip in the text. Inferential Thinking is often referred to as
‘reading between and beyond the lines’. inferring is
required when only part of the information is found in
the text; therefore, you will have to predict outcomes
and draw some logical conclusions.

1. Global warming refers to the recent and ongoing

rise in global temperature near Earth’s surface.
It is caused mostly by increasing concentrations
of greenhouse gases (water vapor, methane,
ozone, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide) in the
atmosphere and that leads to climate change
over time. However, global warming itself
represents only one aspect of climate change.

2. Our Earth is warming. Earth's average

likely present challenges to our environment.

fuels to produce energy, although deforestation,
industrial processes, and some agricultural
practices also emit gases into the atmosphere.
5. Greenhouse gases act like a blanket around
Earth, trapping energy in the atmosphere and
causing it to warm. This phenomenon is called the
greenhouse effect and is natural and necessary
to support life on Earth. However, the buildup of
greenhouse gases can change Earth's climate
and result in dangerous effects to human health
and welfare and to ecosystems.

6. The choices we make today will affect the

amount of greenhouse gases we release into
the atmosphere in the near future and for years
to come. Our lives are connected to the climate.
Therefore, a changing climate will bring changes
that can affect our water supplies, agriculture,
power and transportation systems, the natural
environment, and even our own health and safety.
7. Some changes to the climate are unavoidable.
Carbon dioxide can stay in the atmosphere for
nearly a century, so Earth will continue to warm in
the coming years. We can reduce the risks we will
face from climate change by making choices that
reduce greenhouse gas pollution, and preparing
for the changes that are already underway. Our
decisions today will shape a better world for our
children and grandchildren to live in.
8. Everyone can take action at home, on the road,
in the office and at the school to reduce these
gases and the other threats to the climate. A few
simple steps can save you money and help you to
stay healthy, such as walking or biking to work or
school. You can also get involved on a local level
to support clean energy programs, or any other
climate programs.

The Importance of Exercise

You've probably heard countless times
how exercise is "good for you." But did you
know that it can actually help you feel
good, too? Getting the right amount of
exercise can raise your energy levels and
even help improve your mood.

REWARDS AND BENEFITS

Experts recommend that teens get 60 minutes or more of moderate to strong
physical activity each day. Here are some of the reasons:
¢ Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind. Exercising
causes the body to produce endorphins which are chemicals that
can help a person to feel more peaceful and happy. Exercise can
help some people sleep better. It can also help some people who
have mild depression and low self-esteem. Plus, exercise can also give
people a real sense of accomplishment and pride at having achieved
Ministry of Education English Department - Health and Fitness :: 76

a certain goal.
¢ Exercising can help you look better. People who exercise burn more
calories and look better than those who don't. In fact, exercise is one
of the most important parts of keeping your body at a healthy weight.
¢ Exercise helps people lose weight and lower the risk of some diseases.
Exercising to maintain a healthy weight decreases a person's risk of
developing certain diseases, including Type 2 diabetes and high blood
pressure. These diseases, which used to be found mostly in adults, are
becoming more common in teens.
¢ Exercise can help a person age well. This may not seem important
now, but your body will thank you later. Women are especially prone
to a condition called osteoporosis (a weakening of the bones) as they
get older. Studies have found that weight-bearing exercise — like
jumping, running, or brisk walking — can help girls (and guys!) keep
their bones strong.
WHAT'S RIGHT FOR ME?
1. One of the biggest reasons people abandon exercise is lack of interest;
if what you're doing isn't fun, it's hard to keep it up. The good news is that
there are many different sports and activities that you can try out to see
which one inspires you.
2. When picking the right type of exercise, it can help to consider your
workout personality. For example, do you like to work out alone and
on your own schedule? If so, solo sports like biking or running could be
for you. Or do you like the shared motivation and companionship that
comes from being part of a team? Are you very competitive?
3. It's a good idea to talk to someone who understands the exercise, like
a coach or fitness expert at a gym. He or she can get you started on a
program that's right for you and your level of fitness.
4. Another thing to consider is whether any health conditions may affect
how — and how much — you exercise. Doctors know that most people
benefit from regular exercise, even those with disabilities or conditions
like asthma. But if you have a health problem or other considerations
(like being overweight or very out of shape), talk to your doctor before
beginning an exercise plan. That way you can get information on which
exercise programs are best and which to avoid.
TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING?
1. As with all good things, it's possible to overdo exercise. Although
exercising is a great way to maintain a healthy weight, exercising too
much to lose weight isn't healthy. The body needs enough calories to
function properly. This is especially true for teens, who are still growing.
2. Considering the benefits to the heart, muscles, joints, and mind, it's easy
to see why exercise is wise. The great thing about exercise is that it's never
too late to start. Even small things can count as exercise when you're
starting out - like taking a short bike ride, going for a walk or cleaning the
beach.
3. If you're already getting regular exercise now, try to keep it up after
you graduate from high school. Staying fit is often one of the biggest
challenges for people as they get busy with college and careers.

Art and Architecture:

Frank Gehry
1. Do you ever wonder what your future looks like? You may not really
know what you want to do yet. Don’t worry. One of the most successful
and famous architects in the world, Frank Gehry, didn’t know what he
wanted to do when he was a teenager either.
2. Frank Gehry was born in Toronto, Canada. His grandmother used to
bring him unused wood home from the hardware store for him to play
with when he was a child. Together, they would spend hours putting
buildings and cities together. This helped develop his imagination and
creative side.
3. He moved to the United States when he was 18 years old and was
unsure about his future. He says about those early years. "I was a truck
driver in Los Angeles. I tried radio announcing, which I wasn't very good
at. I tried chemical engineering, which I wasn't very good at and didn't
like.” He asked himself some simple questions about what he really liked
Ministry of Education English Department - Art and Architecture :: 88

doing and what made him excited. Then he remembered, “I loved

going to museums and I loved looking at paintings, loved listening to
music. Those things came from my mother, who took me to concerts
and museums. I remembered Grandma and the blocks, (so) I tried
some architecture classes." From here, he began his path to becoming
one of the most famous architects in the world.
4. Gehry is known for his choice
of special materials as well
as his different designs. He
often builds short buildings
that are wide complexes.
He frequently works with
metal and plays with curves
and shapes so that buildings
look very modern but are still
beautiful. His designs, such
as the Walt Disney Concert
Hall in Los Angeles and the
Dancing House in Prague, are so unique that they often become tourist
attractions as soon as they are completed.
5. The Guggenheim Abu Dhabi
was also designed by Frank
Gehry. When it opens, this
museum will be a central part of
the city’s new Saadiyat Cultural
District and, in addition, will be
a centre for modern art in the
region. The Guggenheim Abu
Dhabi will also have a theatre
where audiences of up to 350
can view music, dance and
dramatic performances. This
museum will be in classic Gehry
style and will be a wonderful addition to the arts and culture district of
the UAE capital.

Reading
Biofuels and the Environment
Leading investors have joined the growing chorus of concern about
governments and companies rushing into producing biofuels as a solution
for global warming, saying that many involved in the sector could be
jeopardising future profits if they do not consider the long-term impact of
what they are doing.
It is essential to build sustainability criteria into the supply chain of any
green fuel project in order to ensure that there is no adverse effect on the
surrounding environment and social structures. The report produced by the
investors expresses concern that many companies may not be fully aware
of the potential pitfalls in the biofuel sector.
Production of corn and soya beans has increased dramatically in the last
years as an eco-friendly alternative to fossil fuels but environmental and
human rights campaigners are worried that this will lead to destruction of
rain forests. Food prices could also go up as there is increased competition
for crops as both foodstuffs and sources of fuel. Last week, the UN warned
Ministry of Education English Department - Practice :: 124

that biofuels could have dangerous side effects and said that steps need
to be taken to make sure that land converted to grow biofuels does not
damage the environment or cause civil unrest. There is already great
concern about palm oil, which is used in many foods in addition to being an
important biofuel, as rain forests are being cleared in some countries and
people driven from their homes to create palm oil plantations.
An analyst and author of the investors' report says that biofuels are not a
cure for climate change but they can play their part as long as governments
and companies manage the social and environmental impacts thoroughly.
There should also be greater measures taken to increase efficiency and to
reduce demand.

Reading
1. Have you ever visited the zoo just to see the Giant Panda? The Giant
Panda is one of the world's rarest animals and comes from Southwestern
China. It is black and white in color and looks like a bear. The panda
is between 160 and 180 centimeters in length, weighs about 80 to 125
kilograms and can live to be 34 years old. Although the panda has a
huge head and heavy body, it is also very attractive with a short tail
and round ears. The panda has black spots on its eyes, ears, shoulders
and legs. The rest of the panda is white.
2. Pandas live in a deep bamboo forest or at higher elevations in snowy or
rocky areas. They prefer to live on the ground but can also climb trees
to look for food. Like bears, the panda tends to live alone. However, it
does not sleep through the winter like bears. The panda eats bamboo,
fish and a small amount of meat. It can spend 10 to 12 hours a day
eating up to 12 to 15 kilograms of food.
3. Pandas are very vocal animals and can communicate through 11
different calls. They also communicate by rubbing a strong scent onto
tree trunks and stones. They also scratch trees to identify their territory
which is one of the reasons that people seem to believe that the panda
is from the bear family; but it is actually from the raccoon family.

Skyscrapers are very tall buildings. They are usually more than 300 metres
tall. You can see skyscrapers in cites around the world. Many countries
build skyscrapers to attract tourists. There are many in Asia, the Arabian Gulf

restaurants and apartments.
What are some famous skyscrapers?
The Empire State Building in New York is a world-famous skyscraper. It has
two million visitors every year. It is popular with tourists, but there are taller

Financial Center. They have 101 floors each. Taipei 101 has more lifts than
the Burj Khalifa and the World Financial Center. It has 61 lifts. The Burj Khalifa
had 57 lifts, but the World Financial Center has only 31.

READING TEXT 2
Liquid Fire: The Invention of the Neon Sign
1. We see them in every town and city, advertising shops and hotels.
Sometimes blinking, sometimes steady, forming shapes, lines and words,
they are the stars of the city night. They are neon lights. But when did neon
start? How are neon lights created?

2. The basic idea behind neon lights was actually discovered in 1675, well
before the discovery of electricity, although it was not understood at the
time. A French scientist, Jean Picard, observed that when a small glass tube
filled with mercury was shaken, the tube glowed. However, the cause of the
light – static electricity – was not understood at that time.

3. Once the principles of electricity were understood, scientists began to

work on the development of lighting. They tried putting different chemicals
into glass tubes and passing electricity through, to try to make them glow.
In 1902, Georges Claude, a scientist from France, put neon (an element, or
basic chemical, which is also quite rare) into a glass tube. When he electrified
it, it produced a very bright light. Subsequently, Claude discovered that
mixing other gases with neon would produce different colours of light. He
Ministry of Education English Department - Practice :: 160

showed his invention to the world in 1910. The first commercial sign was sold
to a Paris barber in 1912, and the first neon signs to be used in the US – by a
car dealer – were acquired in 1923, for $24,000.

4. Nowadays, neon lights are not expensive because people have invented
new, easy ways of producing them. They are not as complex as you might
think. In fact, the process is rather simple. First, glass tubes are heated and
bent into shapes and words. Then, these tubes are filled with neon, which
is taken from the air, in gas form. Finally, an electric current is sent from one
end of the tube to the other. When the current hits the gas, the gas glows
brightly.

5. Other elements can also be used to make lights. Fluorescent lights, like the
lights in many homes and schools, are made in a similar way, but they use
argon and mercury instead of neon. Neon makes red-orange light. Argon
usually makes lavender light, whereas mercury makes a blue light, and
xenon creates a gray or blue-gray light.

only two megacities in the world.
Today, 4 percent of the world’s urban population lives in a megacity. Studies
show that there will be 8 billion people in the world in 2025. Experts say that
there will be 27 megacities.
Today, more than twenty cities in the world are megacities. 75% are in Asia,
South America and Africa. More and more people around the world are
leaving their homes in the countryside and moving to the city.
Many megacities have better opportunities, such as more jobs and a choice
of schools and universities. Megacities are also exciting places to live – there
are lots of different people, languages and restaurants and there are many
interesting things to do.
However, megacities have problems too. The cities are very big and this can
cause problems like pollution or poor housing.
Tokyo, Japan
36.4 million
Tokyo is an exciting, modern city in the east of Japan. There are lots of jobs

because most big companies in Japan are in Tokyo. It is also an excellent

place to study – 20% of Japan’s universities are in the city. However, Tokyo
is very busy and the traffic is very bad. More than 6.3 million people use the
trains every day.
Delhi, India
22.5 million
Delhi is in the north of India. It has many beautiful monuments, interesting
museums, places for education and modern restaurants. There is an exciting
mix of different cultures in the city, and there are four official languages:
Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and English. However, there are not enough houses in
some parts of Delhi. This means that many people live in large slums in the
city.
Cairo, Egypt
16.9 million
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and it is the largest city in Africa. Cairo has
important car and film industries. The city is the centre of many government
offices and has many universities, one of which is over 1200 years old.
