WHAT IS GLOBALIZATION

ANYWAY?
Alex Gray (World Economic Forum, 2017)
In simple terms, globalization is the
process by which people and goods
move easily across borders.
ideas and traditions are
integration of markets, traded and assimilated
trade, and investments

But not to everyone.

One example is the SILK ROAD–
trade between China and Europe
The global village is created when
distance and isolation no longer
matter because people are
connected by technology.
Global communication has made
it easier to see people on the other
side of the world as a neighbor,
instead of a stranger from a
faraway land.
Every step forward in technology
brings with it new dangers.
Many argue that globalization
operates mostly in the interests
of the richest countries.

It is not helping to close the gap between the

world’s poorest and richest nations.
If done wisely, globalization
could lead to unparalleled
peace and prosperity. If
done poorly, to disaster.”

we should start asking:
Is globalization good or bad?
integration of the national markets
to a wider global market signified by
the increased free trade
the expansion and intensification of social
relations and consciousness across world-
time and across world-space
(Manfred Steger)
EXPANSION refers to both the creation of new
social networks and the multiplication of existing
connections that cut across traditional political,
economic, cultural, and geographic boundaries.
establishes new global
connections between people

networks to a more specific

group from the different
corners of the world
INTENSIFICATION refers to the expansion,
stretching, and acceleration of the said
networks. Not only are global connections,
they are also becoming more closely-knit
and expanding their reach.
The world has become a smaller place and
distance has collapsed from thousands of
miles to a mouse-click away.
widespread belief among powerful people
that global integration of economic markets
is beneficial for everyone, since it spreads
freedom and democracy across the world
(Manfred Steger)
MULTIPLE
Different kinds of globalization occur on
multiple and intersecting dimensions of
integration called “scapes”.

global movement of people
flow of culture
circulation of mechanical goods
and software
global circulation of money
realm where political ideas
move around
Although intersecting with one another,
these various scapes have differing logic
showing a distinct windows into the broader
phenomenon of globalization.
