EE1100: Basic Electrical Engineering

Tutorial 1: Basics and definitions, Ohm’s law, Electrical power and energy,
Temperature coefficient of resistance, E.m.f. and internal resistance of a cell

1. What quantity of electricity is carried by 6.24×1021 electrons?

2. Rewrite the following as indicated:
(a) 1000pF=......... nF
(b) 0.02μF=.......... pF
(c) 5000kHz=......... MHz
(d) 47kW=........ MW
(e) 0.32mA=.......μA
3. Is the element shown, a load or source? What is the power absorbed / delivered?

4. A current of 10 A flows through a conductor and 10 W is dissipated. What p.d. exists across
the ends of the conductor?
5. The current flowing through a heating element is 5 A when a p.d. of 35 V is applied across it.
Find the resistance of the element.
7. A 60 W electric light bulb is connected to a 240 V supply. Determine (a) the current flowing
in the bulb and (b) the resistance of the bulb.
8. Graphs of current against voltage for two resistors, P and Q, are shown in the following figure.
Determine the value of each resistor.

9. The hot resistance of a 250V filament lamp is 625 W. Determine the current taken by the lamp
and its power rating.
10. Determine the resistance of an electric fire which takes a current of 12A from a 240V supply.
Find also the power rating of the fire and the energy used in 20 h.
11. In a household during a particular week three 2 kW fires are used on average 25 h each and
eight 100 W light bulbs are used on average 35 h each. Determine the cost of electricity for
the week if 1 unit of electricity costs 15 p.
12. The power supplied by a battery is a constant 6 W over the first 5 min, zero for the following
2 min, linearly increases from zero to 10 W in the next 10 min and linearly decreases from 10
W to zero in the last 7 min. What is the total energy expended during the 24-min interval?
13. Some wire of length 5 m and cross-sectional area 2 mm2 has a resistance of 0.08 W. If the
wire is drawn out until its cross-sectional area is 1 mm2, determine the resistance of the wire.

14. The resistance of a coil of nickel wire at 20◦C is 100 W. The temperature of the wire is
increased and the resistance rises to 130 W. If the temperature coefficient of resistance of
nickel is 0.006/◦C at 20◦C, determine the temperature to which the coil has risen.

15. The voltage at the terminals of a battery is 52 V when no load is connected and 48.8 V when
a load taking 80 A is connected. Find the internal resistance of the battery. What would be
the terminal voltage when a load taking 20 A is connected?
