1. From Richard’s book, what curriculum ideology do you think best fit to
Harlem/Wallingford Academy? Elaborate your answer.
2. From Richard’s Needs Analysis, “learners are not consulted as to whether they perceive a
need for such a knowledge. Their needs have been decided for them by those concerned
with their long term welfare” (p.53).
If you have to conduct a needs analysis,
a. How would you do it in the school of Harlem/Wallingford Academy? Why?
b. Who will be your target population(s)? Why?
c. What information would you seek? Why?
The aim of this paper is to know the ideology of curriculum that fits to the teacher, students,
and learners in Harlem school. The benefit of this paper is to understand about the student needs
and the ideology of curriculum for Harlem school. First of all I want to explain about the ideology
of the curriculum. According to Richard’s book, there are five ideology of the curriculum. The
first is academic rationalism. The academic rationalism it is just focus on the academic think.
Teacher just focus on the academic without knowing the students can understand what the teacher
teach or not, this ideology is to develop the students intellectual and humanistic. In here, teacher
as superior than the learner. The second is social and economic efficiency. The social and
economic efficiency it is sees the language learner who can use a language to get a better job in
the future.

The third is learner-centeredness. The learners-centeredness is to build individual


independents of the learners, to build their self-reflection, to build their critical thinking, and to
build their skills. Every learners has their educational background, the differences of every learners
it is from how much they got a knowledge from their educational background. The fourth is social
reconstructionism. The social reconstructionism is to build the social relationship. In here, is about
how the learner to make a relationship with the environment, to take care of each other, to help
each other, and to tolerance to each other, it is require to need a training for the learners. The fifth
is cultural pluralism. The cultural pluralism it is the learners should prepare to adapt with the
different cultures. Then, if the learners want other people to respect their culture, and the learners
have to respect to other culture to. Here, all the culture is in the same level and their own culture
is a prior than another culture.

The next, I would like to explain about needs analysis. The mean by needs analysis is the
process to collect the information about student needs. According to Richard’s book, the purpose
of needs analysis is to collect the information about a particular problem learners are experiencing.
When doing the needs analysis, we need the users of needs analysis. It is mean, someone who want
to know or to conduct the needs of students or learners. We also need the target population. It is
mean someone who will be analyze by us (example: teacher, students, parents, etc). We need
administering the needs analysis. It is mean someone who will collect the information of the needs
analysis. The last is we need the procedures for conducting needs analysis. It is mean by the way
to conduct the needs analysis. There are many procedures for conducting needs analysis. There are
questionnaires, self-ratings, interviews, meetings, observation, collecting learner language
samples, task analysis, case studies, and analysis of available information. We can choose one of
procedures to conduct the needs analysis based on our perspective and our goals to do the needs
analysis.

In my opinion the curriculum ideology that fit to the Harlem school is academic
rationalism. The student characteristic in Harlem is many variety. Most of them are naughty, drugs
addict, quarrel addict, but not all of them are like that. Some of them are drop out from their school,
and most of them are join with gang. If I as a teacher in Harlem school I will teach the students
hardly until they can pay attention to me. I choose the academic rationalism it is to make the teacher
as a role model for the students. The teacher must be a good role model for the students and use
the good method or strategy to gain the attention of students in Harlem school. In here, teacher as
superior than the learner. It is mean, the teacher must mastery the knowledge that can make the
students was amazed to the teacher. If I as a teacher in Harlem, I will give the motivation for my
students to build their awareness by approaching to them as a friend. By using academic
rationalism, teacher can mastery the class as the teacher want. Here, can build the learners intellect,
and the teacher organizing the class, so the teacher modify the material as the teacher want. If the
teacher want to gain attention from a students, they must make the interesting topic or they must
use the unique method for gaining the attention of students.

The academic rationalism is just focus on academic think, it can make the students
sometimes felt bored when the learning process. As a teacher, we must find the variety of strategy
for teaching process, to make the students felt enjoy and comfortable in the learning process. In
Harlem school, it is a bit little difficulty to gain the attention of the students, because most of the
students are not focus when learning process. We must change the bad habit in Harlem school by
using our own method. The example we give the motivation or students for to stop to using drugs,
to fight each other, and bring them to the bright future. We can approach their parents to give their
children awareness of their self. The example like Gaby, she is drugs addict but Spoon is not drugs
addict. Spoon as her boyfriend can give motivation to Gaby to stop for use drugs by the good
method and strategy. By using academic rationalism, we can bring the students to be not lazy in
study in the school. Even the teacher just focus on the academic, it can make the students more
intelligent and they want to study more hardly to make the goal and the purpose of learning
successfully. The academic rationalism can bring the students to rich their dream and their needs
in learning process.

If I conduct the needs analysis in Harlem school, I would like to use the observation and
interview for the procedures. I choose observation because, it is to make easier to collect the
information about the object that we want to needs analysis by seeing the situation of the school,
the school environment, the school organization, and etc. From observation, we can know about
the teaching and learning process in the school, we can make a research about the school
organization, school context, and etc. I also choose interview because, it is also to make easier to
collect the information from the interviewed, the example the teacher and the students in that
school. From interview, we can know all of the information about the school even not in detail
information, such as school structure organization, school rules, school punishment, school data
information about the students and the teacher. The target population of the needs analysis are the
teacher and the students in Harlem school. I want the target population is the teacher because, for
me teacher knows all about the information of the school, the teacher can sharing about what
happen in Harlem school, the teacher can provide the best way to teach in Harlem school and also
the teacher can make Harlem school be better as before. I also choose the students because, I want
to know the students feel about the school, I want to know the students in Harlem school and the
student characteristic. Designing the needs analysis the first we must collect the information about
the learners. The second we must organizing the information based on part of information, the
example such as language skills of learners, grammar, and etc. The last is reporting what we
analyzed about the information.

I would seek the information from the teacher is about the context of the school, the
curriculum of the school, the school management, the school financial, the vision and mission of
the school, the data information of the students, the facilities and infrastructure of the school, and
etc. I would like to ask about the description of the students in Harlem school, how the students
study in the learning process, how the students pay attention to the teacher. I would seek the
information from the students is the students belief in joining this school, the students skills, the
students capabilities, the students motivated or not, the students complain, the students sharing
their experience, the student needs in their learning, and the students educational background. I
would like to ask to the teacher about the student situation in Harlem school, I would like to ask
about the reason of the students drop out from the school, and many things that I want to know as
interviewer. The example Gaby, I would like to interview Gaby and ask her the reason why she
can drugs addicted, where she want take study after graduating from Harlem, how is the teacher
in Harlem looks like, are the teacher always give the motivation to the students, Gaby educational
background, Gaby experiences, and etc. From observation, I will know the school situation, the
environment around the school, the environment in that village, the school curriculum, are the
school ever follow the competition or not, how the teacher teach the students, how the students
respond to the teacher when teaching process, what the activities that the teacher provide in the
learning process, how the time management in Harlem school, how the condition of building of
Harlem school, how the facilities in a room classes, how the teaching and learning process, how
the school financial, which one is the students are high quality and low quality, how long the
learning process, and etc.

In conclusion, according to Richard’s book, there are five ideology of the curriculum. The
first is academic rationalism. The second is social and economic efficiency. The third is learner-
centeredness. The fourth is social reconstructionism. The fifth is cultural pluralism. Planning goals
come after the ideology of the curriculum. The ideology of curriculum is important to make the
planning goals of the course. We also needs the organizing course, designing a course, and the
other to make the course structured. If we want to do the needs analysis, what we consider when
we do the needs analysis are the purposes, the users for conducting needs analysis, the target
population, administering the needs analysis (ex. The teamwork, the researcher team, and etc.),
and the last is the procedures of needs analysis. Designing the needs analysis the first we must
collect the information about the learners. The second we must organizing the information based
on part of information, the example such as language skills of learners, grammar, and etc. The last
is reporting what we analyzed about the information. In Harlem school, we must use the academic
rationalism to make the Harlem school successfully in teaching and learning process. We also do
the needs analysis to collect the information about the learners. The teaching strategy that the
teacher must apply in Harlem school is using the right strategy to the students. The students is also
needs the approaching from the teacher, especially teacher’s motivation, teacher to make the
students awareness of their self and build the students independently. We also see the environment
around Harlem how looks like, it is looks good or it is looks dangerous, from that we can consider
what the teacher should do in Harlem school to change the bad character of the students. It can
begin from the teacher their self, and be a good role model also can teach the students by the
interested method for the students in Harlem school.
