LESSON 15: Circles!

Standards: 7.G.1
What is the definition of a circle?
A Circle is a closed plane figure with all points the same
distance from the center. It has no beginning point and
no ending point.

A
A chord is a line segment with its endpoints
on the circle.
S
SV
V
Diameter is a line segment that passes through the
center of the circle and has its endpoints on the circle.

RT

R T
Radius (radii) is a line segment with one endpoint
at the center of a circle and the other endpoint on
the circle.

If the radius of a circle is 12 centimeters, what is the diameter?

If the diameter of a circle is 8 meters, what is the radius?

The radius is half of the diameter!

d = 2r
Find the diameter or radius!

What is Circumference?

The distance around a circle is called the circumference.

The diameter and circumference of a circle have a special relationship.

Let's see if we can discover the relationship between diameter

and circumference!

Follow these steps:

1. Using a ruler, measure the diameter of your circle or cylinder.
2. Cut a piece of yarn equal to the length of the diameter.
3. Measure how many times the piece of yarn fits along the
circumference.

Pi is a name given to the ratio of the circumference
of a circle to the diameter.

This means, for any circle, you can divide the

circumference by the diameter and always get
exactly the same number: 3.14159...
How can we use the formula for Pi?

To find the circumference, diameter, or radius of a circle!

What is the formula for circumference?

For example, if the diameter of a circle is 3 cm, what is

the circumference?

If the diameter is 3 cm, what is the radius?

What do we know so far?

Circumference = Diameter = Radius =

If the diameter of a circle is 7 inches, what is the circumference?

If the diameter of a circle is 13 inches, what is the circumference?

If the radius of a circle is 5 yards, what is the circumference?

If the radius of a circle is 17 meters, what is the circumference?

Given the circumference, how can you find the
diameter or radius?

For example, if the circumference is 8π inches, what is the radius?

If the circumference is 18π inches, what is the radius? Diameter?

If the circumference is 13π inches, what is the radius? Diameter?

Find the circumference, diameter, and or radius!

Write your answer in terms of π.

LEARNING LOG - 7.G.1
Jordan sews a lace border 50π inches long around the edge of a circular tablecloth.

What is the length of the radius from the inside edge of the lace to the center of the circular tablecloth?
How can you find the area of a circle?
The same way we find the area of a rectangle! Really?! Yes!

How? Let's remind ourselves of how to find the area of a rectangle.

A = Length × Width

Now, to find the area of a circle, we simply have to turn the circle in
to a rectangle! Any ideas for how we can do this?!

Follow these steps:

1. Measure the radius of your circle.

2. Calculate the circumference of the circle, in terms of Pi.

3. Cut the circle in to fourths (quarters).

4. Split the fourths in half...

5. Can you make a rectangle?

6. Cut each eighth in half, making sixteenths.

7. Cut each sixteenth in half.

8. If we kept on splitting the fractal pieces, we would get close to

making a perfect rectangle.

Considering this, what's the width of your "rectangle"?

What about the length?

So... What's the formula for the area of a circle?!

Find the area of these circles, using the formula...
Write your answer in terms ofπ.
LEARNING LOG - 7.G.1

Jack believes

that the area of the following circle is equal to
12 x π . Is he correct? Explain.
Using the formula for area to find circumference,
diameter, and radius...

If the area of a circle 144π inches, what are the circumference,

radius, and diameter?

2 Radius = √144 = 12 inches

A = Πr

Diameter = 24 inches

Circumference = 2∏r or ∏d Circumference = 24∏
