JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: CHIEF LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST


GRADE:

REPORTS TO: CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB


To supervise the laboratory diagnosis of patients’ samples in the laboratory to
determine the nature and extent of ailment needed to facilitate treatment.

KEY RESULT AREAS

OUTPUT 1: Counseled Patients


Definition: Counseled patients who undergo laboratory tests so as to appraise
them of the nature and type of sample to be taken.

KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer, Patient


Measurement Criteria: Compliance by patient.

OUTPUT 2: Supervised Staff


Definition: Supervised laboratory Staff to ensure that staff undercharge
operate at standard performance with quality output.
KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer
Measurement Criteria: High quality output by the section.

OUTPUT 3: Quality Assurance


Definition: Carried out quality control checks to ensure that standard
operations procedures are followed by laboratory staff and thus
improve the reliability of laboratory services
KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer
Measurement Criteria: Procedures followed.

OUTPUT 4: Diagnosis Assignments


Definition: Carried out diagnosis assignments such as chemistry, Hematology,
microbiology, parasititology and serology in order to identify nature
and type of ailment.
KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer, Patient
Measurement Criteria: Quality sample test.

OUTPUT 5: Work Schedules


Definition: Prepared work schedules for staff undercharge to ensure
coordinated manning of the laboratory.
KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer
Measurement Criteria: No staff-outs in the Laboratory.

OUTPUT 6: Replenished Stocks


Definition: Coordinated replenishments of laboratory stocks to avoid stock-
outs.
KEY RECEIVERS: Chief Medical Officer
Measurement Criteria: Laboratory stocks available all the time.

JOB ANALYSIS SECTION

1. Education
Grade 12 Certificate with a certificate in Biomedical Sciences

2. Experience
Three (3) years minimum experience.

3. Problem Solving
Solves problems of diagnostic nature in a laboratory requiring full analysis of
samples and experiments there from. Manuals, automated/ specialized
quantitative and qualitative methods, standard formulae employed.

4. Decision Making
Makes decisions on the accuracy and quality of samples and or experiments
made in the laboratory and determines solutions on the facts available.
Passes laboratory results to the doctor who determines treatment based on
the results received. Has discretion on the timetabling of staff undercharge.

5. Communication
Writes laboratory results on laboratory forms, prepares memos and reports for
the section. Counsels patients and consults with Doctors and Nurses during
course of duty. Appraises staff undercharge.

6. Work Relationship
Intra-Laboratory communications on results verifications and other laboratory
issues. Updates the Chief Medical Officer on issues affecting the laboratory,
interacts with other departments on issues of common interest such as
transport, budgetary allocations. Interacts with outside organizations on
laboratory issues.

7. Supervision
Supervises – Laboratory Technologist – 1; Laboratory Assistant – 1

8. Risks
Works in a laboratory environment involving handling of samples and
reagents.
9. Responsibility For Assets
Controls various laboratory equipment and apparatus and reagents.

10. Consequences Of Error


Mismanagement of patient due to erroneous laboratory results.
