Parts of Speech Overview

A noun is a person, a place, a thing or an idea (table, school, dogs, flowers).

A verb shows the action or state of being of a subject (is, am, kick, love)

A pronoun is used when replacing a noun (he, him, she, herself).

An adjective modifies a noun (beautiful, big, old, important).

An adverb modifies a verb, an adjective or adverb (deeply, violently, fast, sometimes)

A preposition is a word used to link nouns, pronouns, or phrases to other words within a
sentence. (in, on, at, under)

A conjunction connects words, phrases or clauses (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

An interjection is a word that expresses emotion (wow, oh, oops, yuck).

Direction: Identify the underlined part of speech.

Phrase, Clause and Sentence

Phrase
A phrase is a group of two or more words that does not have the subject and verb
combination and does not form a predicate.

For example: A school building, a gas station, at the hospital, through the tunnel,
to pass the final exam, etc.

Types of phrases

Noun phrase: The big bad wolf is crawling slowly through the woods.
Prepositional phrase: Without knowing what to do, Emily decided to tell the
truth to her parents.
Infinitive phrase: To speak English fluently, you have to practice every day.
Appositive phrases: Romeo and Juliet, a famous love story, was written by
Shakespeare.
** Gerund phrase: Running is good for your health.
Drinking too much water can be bad for your stomach.
You have to avoid driving your car under the influence.

** Participial phrases is a verbal phrase that functions as an adjective and it used to


modify a noun or pronoun: V.3 (with –ed or –en ending) or V.ing

For example
 Hijacked by a group of terrorists, the plane was forced to stop at Heathrow
Airport.
 Wearing the bright, colorful, strange dress, Patricia must have lost her taste
in fashion.
 Exhausted from work, Lily went back to bed once she got home.
 I saw Michael canoeing along the river.
 The ancient castle destroyed by the severe storm has never been rebuilt.

Clause
Clauses are groups of words that have both subjects and predicates. There are two
types of clauses; independent clause and subordinate clause.

Independent clause is a clause which sometimes can act as a sentence.


For example: The rain started to fall.

A subordinate clause cannot be on their own.


For example: While I was walking along the street,

Sentence
A complete sentence has a subject and predicate, and can often be composed of
more than one clause.

For example:
 He started his journey up on Monday.
 In the document, North Korea promises to get rid of nuclear weapons.
 During the historic summit in Singapore, US President Donald Trump and the
North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un met.
 Adam West, the actor who played Batman in the 1960s TV series, died last
week aged 88.
 He puts the lighter near the river and the river gets on fire!

Finite and Non-Finite Verb Overview
Finite Verb;
 show tense
She works in Bangkok. She has worked in Bangkok.

 Be constructed with an auxiliary/modal


I am working. I should be working.

Non-Finite Verbs do not indicate person, number or tense.

 Present participle: -ing words


walking, tiring, working

 Past participle: -ed words


walked, tired, worked

 Infinitive: the root of any verb (no tense or person ending)

1) Go directly to questions, scan answers and highlight key words.

2) Use the “Line Numbering.”
