Pharmacy Department
The Pharmacy Department provides a comprehensive range of pharmaceutical
services to patients and staff in SVUH. Our principal objective is to provide
patient-focused pharmaceutical care in order to achieve definite outcomes that
improve patients’ quality of life. The pharmacy service has developed over the
last ten years, reflecting international developments in pharmacy practice, and
in response to the needs of this organisation. The department has a skill mix of

The main strands of the pharmacy service are:

Dispensary service

This incorporates medicines procurement and management, distribution of

medicines to clinical areas, non-aseptic (extemporaneous) compounding and
dispensing services for patients on discharge and for outpatients.

A clinical pharmacy service is provided throughout the hospital. Clinical

pharmacists have a key role in monitoring and reviewing patients and
prescriptions, providing medication counselling and liaising with community
pharmacists to ensure seamless pharmaceutical care. Clinical pharmacists work
closely with other members of multi-disciplinary teams to ensure that patients
receive optimal pharmaceutical care while they are attending the hospital.
