Introducción
]* En febrero pasado, los autores de este trabajo convenimos con el Dr. Arturo Huerta,
director de Investigación Económica, la presente colaboración. En aquella sazón, nuestro
plan era retomar algunas ideas contenidas en el ensayo sobre el sistema financiero mexicano
que habíamos escrito a solicitud del profesor Dominick Salvatore ( 1 994 ) . A partir de esa
premisa, examinaríamos ciertos aspectos de la oligopolización bancaria y de la propensión
a la fragilidad financiera de la economía (abierta) mexicana. La acendrada vocación hacia
la competencia oligopólica y la corporativización del crédito en el sistema bancario mexicano
serían, pues, los temas centrales de nuestra colaboración. Sin embargo, el sensible falleci-
miento de Antonio Gutiérrez acaecido a fines de febrero de este año, ha modificado el plan
original. En su ausencia, al redactar este artículo, me sujeté tanto como me fuera posible
al texto y razonamiento del ensayo que nos serviría de premisa ; donde fue posible, me limité
a corregir y matizar pequeños detalles aquí y allá, y a actualizar uno que otro dato en
vez de alterar unilateralmente lo que habíamos escrito al alimón. Por lo demás, lo que he
añadido es consistente con las hipótesis que Antonio Gutiérrez sostenía. Pienso que era esta
la única y más justa forma de proceder. De este jaez queda saldado nuestro compromiso con
