LEADER’S GUIDE

GOD’S WAY TO HEAVEN
OBJECTIVE: To have a clear understanding of God’s plan of salvation for man.
LESSON:
There are Five (5) Truths that we must clearly understand to be sure of going to heaven.
B. An abundant life
Read John 10:10
But most people aren’t experiencing an abundant life and aren’t sure that they have
eternal life because…
II. Man has a SIN problem that separates him from GOD.
A. According to Romans 3:23, what is man’s problem? Everyone has sinned.
How many people in the world have sinned? All
Does that include you and me? Yes
We might think that we can pay for our sins and earn eternal life by doing good works
or keeping the Ten Commandments. But what is God’s perspective on sin based on
James 2:10? If we commit one sin, how guilty are we? God sees us as guilty of
breaking all of His laws!
What about doing good works so that one can go to heaven? Read Eph. 2:8-9 and
Titus 3:5. We cannot be saved by doing good works.
If we cannot depend on obeying the Ten Commandments and doing good works to
save us, what then is God’s way to heaven?
B. What did Jesus Christ do for us? Romans 5:8 and 1 Peter 2:24 Jesus
died on the cross and completely paid the penalty of our sins.
2
IV. The resurrection of JESUS CHRIST assures us that He can fulfill His promise of eternal life.
A. According to 1 Cor.15:3-4, Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised on the
third day.
B. Romans 1:3-4 - the resurrection of Christ proves that He is not just an ordinary man
but also the Son of God.
C. Jesus Himself said in John 11:25-26, “… I am the resurrection and the life; he who
believes in Me will live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me will
never die. Do you believe this?”
But merely knowing about what Jesus Christ has done for us is not enough. Let’s go
back to Romans 6:23.
How do we receive this gift? Read 1 John 5:11-12. - We must have Jesus Christ in us
since He is the Source of eternal life.
ILLUSTRATION: Offer a real gift to anyone in the group and have them take it. Don’t
take it back. It is really for them to keep. When they take it , explain that this is a
demonstration of faith. The person believed that you were sincere and they trusted
you so they took the gift. Ask them who paid for the gift (you). Ask them if they did
anything to deserve the gift (nothing). Compare this to Jesus who paid the penalty for
our sins and is giving us the gift of eternal life. Jesus paid for it. We didn’t do anything
to deserve His gift of eternal life. When did the gift become theirs? When they took it
from you by faith.
To be saved by faith means to trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you. If you think
that you must have faith in Jesus Christ plus do good works in order to have
eternal life, then you are not really trusting in Jesus Christ alone because you are
also trusting in yourself.
What about good works? Good works are not the means to salvation, rather
they are the evidences or by-products of your salvation.
Once you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone to save you, He will give
you the power to live a life of good deeds.
2. What promise does Jesus make in Revelation 3:20? Jesus will come into my heart
if I invite Him in.
3
Perhaps you have trusted God for many things, but today He is asking you to trust Him to
save you. Jesus is standing at the door of your heart and knocking. He wants to enter your
heart, forgive your sins and give you His free gift of eternal life which He purchased with His
precious blood. Are you willing to repent of all of your sins? To repent means to turn away
from your sins. To stop doing what is wrong or sinful. Do you believe that He will save you,
forgive your sins and give you His free gift of eternal life if you trust in Him to save you?
That is His promise to you and He will always keep His promise.
You can pray this simple prayer to express your faith in Jesus Christ and receive
him into your heart as your Lord and Savior. You only have to pray this prayer
once, but with sincerity, because when He enters your life, He will never leave
you.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank you so much for loving me. I am so sorry for my sins. Thank you for
dying on the cross for all of my sins. With your help, I will turn away from all my sins.
Today, I trust in you to be my Lord and Savior and I receive you into my heart. Thank
you for forgiving my sins and for coming into my heart. I accept your free gift of
eternal life. Thank you for that one day, I will go home to you in heaven. From this day
on, I will follow and obey you. Amen.
Today you made the MOST IMPORTANT decision of your life! You accepted Jesus as
your Lord and Savior.
As a reminder of your commitment today, read and sign the pledge below:
4
APPLICATION:
You now have a very personal and permanent relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. To grow
in your relationship with Him:
1. Pray to Him every day. This is how we talk to God.
2. Read the Bible. This is how God talks to you. Begin with the Gospel of John. Read a
chapter a day and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand it.
3. Be part of a small group (D12/Dgroup) to learn more about God and how to please
Him.
MEMORY VERSES:
John 3:16
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him
shall not perish but have eternal life.”
Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
5
“YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN”
OBJECTIVE: To fully understand what being “born again” really means.
LESSON:
th
Many people consider being “born again” a fad that developed in the 20 century. Some
people react negatively to being born again because they think that it is being converted to a
religion. But being born again is not a fad nor is it converting to a religion. It is what happens to
us when we establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
a. Why did Nicodemus see Jesus “at night”? Nicodemus probably didn’t want anyone to see
him speak with Jesus (Why was this so?)
b. What was his impression of Jesus? That Jesus was a teacher (Rabbi) who came from God.
Apparently, he had witnessed Jesus speak and perform miracles. One thing good about
Nicodemus was his openness. He was seeking answers to questions deep inside him.
Notice that even if Nicodemus never asked Jesus a question, Jesus already knew what was
in his heart and what he wanted to know.
Is it enough to be religious like Nicodemus? No!
Is being “born again” an option or an absolute condition? Absolute condition!
If we are “NOT” born again, can we enter the kingdom of heaven? No!
Nicodemus wanted to know how to enter God’s kingdom.
The term “Born-again” was first mentioned in the passage which Nicodemus didn’t
understand as shown by how he replied in VERSE 4.
6
3. What was Nicodemus’ understanding of what Jesus said? Nicodemus knew that Jesus was
not referring to a literal or physical rebirth but he still could not understand what Jesus
meant by being “born again”.
Give Nicodemus credit ... remember he was a Pharisee ... a seminary scholar ... a prominent
teacher. He was at home with the rabbinical method of teaching spiritual truth in symbols
which Jesus had just used. He was merely picking up Jesus’ own use of symbolism and was
basically telling Jesus, “ I can’t start all over again; it’s too late ... I’m too old to start over.”
4. In VERSES 5-8, Jesus now tries to explain to Nicodemus what He meant by being born of the
Spirit.
In VERSE 6, Jesus explains that He was talking about two kinds of birth: the PHYSICAL and
SPIRITUAL.
In VERSE 8, being the Master Teacher that He is, Jesus explains that being born of the Spirit
is like the wind; one cannot see the wind but knows that it is present because of its effects.
It is the same with a man who is born of the Spirit. You cannot see the Spirit in that man but
you see its effects on his life, for example, a man who’s full of love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness etc.
5. But in spite of the explanation of Jesus, what was Nicodemus’ reply in verse 9? He still
couldn’t understand.
6. In verse 10, Nicodemus receives a rebuke from Jesus. Why? Nicodemus should have known
better since he taught the Scriptures!
7. In verse 12, we see the reason why Nicodemus couldn’t understand. What was the reason?
His unbelief.
8. Jesus delivers His point in verse 13. That He is the only one who has come from Heaven
that’s why He had the authority to talk about the Kingdom of God.
In order for Nicodemus to understand what He was explaining, Jesus uses a story that
Nicodemus had mastered, one that came from the first five books of the Bible.
After Nicodemus heard this, he didn’t question Jesus anymore and HIS LIFE CHANGED.
9. READ JOHN 7:45-52. In Verses 50-51, what do you notice about Nicodemus? He was trying
to defend Jesus.
10. READ JOHN 19:38-39. WHAT DID NICODEMUS DO TO SHOW TO THE WORLD THAT HE WAS
DECLARING HIMSELF A BELIEVER OF JESUS? He helped bury the body of Jesus and even
brought expensive spices (Myrrh was used for embalming the dead and Aloes for perfume).
7
11. DID HE RISK ANYTHING BY DOING THIS? Yes, he was willing to lose his job as a ruler of the
Sanhedrin and to be discredited as a Pharisee.
12. WHAT CHANGED NICODEMUS? IN VERSE 14, WHAT MADE HIM UNDERSTAND WHAT JESUS
WAS SAYING?
To answer this, we need to go back to the first five books of the Bible, specifically NUMBERS
21, and understand what went on in the mind of Nicodemus when Jesus spoke those words.
NUMBERS 21:4-9
13. In VERSE 4, as the people were traveling, they started to grumble against God.
14. WHAT WERE THEY COMPLAINING ABOUT? Food, water and Manna.
15. DID THEY REALLY LACK FOOD AND WATER? No, God supplied them with Manna daily and
when they needed water, God would provide water even from impossible sources like a
rock.
NOTE: WE MAY THINK NEGATIVELY ABOUT THE ISRAELITES AT THIS POINT BECAUSE HERE WAS
A GROUP OF PEOPLE WHO PERSONALLY WITNESSED THE DELIVERANCE OF GOD THROUGH THE
PARTING OF THE RED SEA AND YET THEY STILL FOUND TIME TO COMPLAIN AND GRUMBLE.
WHAT ABOUT US? GOD HAS BEEN SO GOOD IN PROVIDING FOR ALL OF OUR NEEDS AND HAS
DONE A LOT OF MIRACLES IN OUR LIVES, BUT ARE WE STILL COMPLAINING? WE COMPLAIN
ABOUT FINANCES, TRAFFIC, WORK, SUPERIORS, and GOVERNMENT etc. TO STOP OUR
COMPLAINING, WE NEED TO START COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS.
16. WHAT DID GOD DO IN VERSE 6? God sent them a PROBLEM. God sent venomous snakes to
their camp and people started dying because of the snake bites.
17. In VERSE 7, WHAT DID THEY THINK WAS THE SOLUTION TO THEIR PROBLEM? For God to
remove the snakes.
*Oftentimes, we think of certain things to be the solution to our problems but God may
have other solutions.
18. WHAT WAS GOD’S SOLUTION? Make a bronze snake and put it on a pole. Anybody who was
bitten and looked up at the snake would live.
19. WHAT WOULD MAKE THEM LOOK AT THE SNAKE? Faith in God’s Word, in God’s solution.
NOTE: THOSE WHO WERE BITTEN HAD TWO CHOICES, EITHER TO RUN TO THE DOCTOR OR
OBEY GOD’S INSTRUCTION. VERSE 9 SAYS THAT ONLY THOSE WHO OBEYED GOD SURVIVED. IT
WASN’T THE SNAKE THAT SAVED THE ISRAELITES BUT THEIR FAITH AND OBEDIENCE TO GOD’S
WORD.
8
Back to Nicodemus: When Jesus mentioned about the snake being lifted up in the desert,
Nicodemus recalled this story clearly and somehow he understood a little of what Jesus meant.
But when Nicodemus witnessed Jesus crucified on the cross and lifted up, the more he
understood and from thereon, he declared himself to be a believer.
HOW DID JESUS SUMMARIZE THE TRUE MEANING OF BEING “BORN AGAIN”? Read John 3:16.
20. What is man’s part in being born again according to verse 16? He must believe in Jesus
Christ.
Belief is not just head knowledge but obedience to God’s word.
21. What happens to those who reject Jesus Christ, according to verse 18? They are already
condemned.
APPLICATION:
WHAT ABOUT YOU? DO YOU WANT ETERNAL LIFE? DO YOU WANT THE SPIRITUAL POISON OF
SIN TO BE REMOVED?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU ONLY NEED TO PUT YOUR FAITH IN JESUS TO BE SAVED FROM HELL
AND REPENT OF YOUR SINS?
IF SO, WILL YOU ACCEPT HIS GIFT OF SALVATION TODAY BY INVITING JESUS INTO YOUR HEART
AND LIFE?
TO SHOW YOUR TRUST IN HIM, YOU CAN SAY THIS PRAYER.
PRAYER:
Lord God, I admit that I am a sinner, full of the poison of sin. I thank you for providing a
solution - your son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for my sins. Today, I put my trust in
Him totally to save me from eternal death. I would like to open my heart now and invite
you, Lord Jesus, to come into my life. Thank you for forgiving my sins and for Your gift of
eternal life.
Lord Jesus, thank you for coming into my heart. Give me the desire to want to know you
more and more. Make me into the kind of person you want me to be. Amen
MEMORY VERSES:
Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
1 John 5:11-12
“And the witness is this that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. *12+ He
who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.”
9
HEAVEN OR HELL?
OBJECTIVE: To make everyone aware that there is something beyond physical death which will
be their eternal destination.
In this study, we will try to get the answer to this question by going through some Bible
passages. Knowing the answer to this question is very crucial because it can affect one’s
perspective in life. If you know that there is life after death, and that your decisions in life will
impact your eternal destiny, then your behavior and decision-making will be affected.
ILLUSTRATION: Someone once tried to explain eternal life: If you make a small bird (e.g. Maya-
maya) fly to the Pacific Ocean and get all the water its beak can contain, then make it fly all the
way to the Atlantic Ocean and drop the water, then go back to the Pacific Ocean to repeat the
process until it is able to transfer ALL the water from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean, then
ETERNITY HAS JUST BEGUN.
Psalm 90:10
As for the days of our life, they contain seventy years,
Or if due to strength, eighty years,
Yet their pride is but labor and sorrow;
For soon it is gone and we fly away.
The Bible says that our physical life lasts only 70 to 80 years; this means that we will be
spending a far longer time in eternity. Wouldn’t it be wise to know where we’ll spend it?
There is a story in the Bible that talks about two people who went to different destinations
when they died. Let us read this passage in Luke 16:19-31.
2. IN VERSES 22 & 23, WHERE DID EACH MAN GO AFTER THEY DIED?
LAZARUS: ABRAHAM’S BOSOM represents Heaven
RICH MAN: HADES represents Hell
3. WHAT OBSERVATIONS CAN YOU MAKE IN VERSES 23-24 ABOUT HELL AND LIFE AFTER
DEATH?
• Hell is a place of torment and suffering
10
• In hell, one’s senses are still intact; the rich man retained his sense of SIGHT (which
made it more tormenting for him because he could see how beautiful the other side
was), and his sense of TOUCH (he was able to feel the heat that even just a drop of
water on his tongue would give some relief.)
Have you ever felt so thirsty that it became sheer torture for you?
5. WHAT WAS THE RESPONSE? It was impossible for Lazarus to do that because there was a
great chasm separating them.
Once you are in Hell, it is a permanent condition. There’s no way out. It is for eternity.
Jesus emphasizes the point that there is no second chance or possibility of relief from this
agony. The rich man’s request for relief was denied.
7. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE RICH MAN AFTER HE REALIZED THAT HIS SITUATION WAS
PERMANENT?
He suddenly became an evangelist, wanting his brothers to be spared of the agony that he
was experiencing.
8. In Verse 29, Abraham talks about MOSES AND THE PROPHETS, which refers to the Old
Testament. In other words, Abraham was saying that since they have the Scriptures, let
them read it and be warned. The same applies to us today.
9. In Verses 30-31, what does the rich man plead for? A supernatural occurrence to happen
because his brothers wouldn’t believe the Bible.
This also reveals the rich man’s situation, that he himself did not believe in the Scriptures
and would only be convinced if someone rose from the dead.
10. What was Abraham’s response? Abraham declared that the rich man’s brothers would not
respond to a supernatural event since they do not respond to the Word of God.
This shows us the true condition of the hardened hearts of men. The Bible has been given to
us to warn us of the impending danger of spending eternity in Hell but people just won’t
listen.
Mark 9:47-48
“And if your eye causes you to stumble, cast it out; it is better for you to enter the
kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes, to be cast into hell, [48] where their
worm does not die, and THE FIRE IS NOT QUENCHED.
11
Rev. 21:8
“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral
persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with
fire and brimstone, which is the Second Death.”
Matthew 25:30
“And cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be
weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Luke 13:28
“There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth there when you see Abraham and Isaac and
Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being cast out.”
Rev. 21:18-27
“And the material of the wall was jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. *19+
The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The
first foundation stone was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth,
emerald; [20] the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth,
beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst.
[21] And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And
the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. [22] And I saw no temple in it, for
the Lord God, the Almighty, and the Lamb, are its temple. [23] And the city has no need of
the sun or of the moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is
the Lamb. [24] And the nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the earth shall bring
their glory into it. [25] And in the daytime (for there shall be no night there) its gates shall
never be closed; [26] and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it; [27]
and nothing unclean and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into
it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
Rev. 21:4
“and He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there shall no longer be any
death; there shall no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed
away.”
HEAVEN IS A PLACE WHERE THERE WILL BE NO MOURNING, CRYING OR PAIN. EVEN THE VERY
PRECIOUS THINGS THAT WE CONSIDER ON EARTH ARE ONLY ORDINARY THINGS IN HEAVEN
(Streets made of gold).
12
WHERE WOULD YOU RATHER SPEND ETERNITY?
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE THE GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE IN HEAVEN, THEN YOU NEED TO HAVE JESUS
IN YOUR LIFE.
Remember what we have studied so far … one cannot get to heaven on the strength of one’s
own righteousness or goodness.
WHY?
Rom. 3:23 says “We have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
Rom. 6:23 - The wages of sin is death …
What is the GOOD NEWS? Jesus already paid for our sins and that salvation is a gift.
Rom. 6:23 – “but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
John 1:12 – Who are children of God? Only those who receive and believe in Jesus
WOULD YOU LIKE TO INVITE JESUS INTO YOUR LIFE TODAY? LET’S PRAY…
Lord Jesus, I need you. I acknowledge that I am a sinner deserving hell. Thank you for dying on
the cross for my sins so that I need not pay anymore for my sins in hell. I repent of all my sins
and ask You to forgive me and cleanse me of all my unrighteousness. I now open the door of my
heart and ask You to enter my heart. Thank you for forgiving my sins and for Your gift of eternal
life. I now ask You to change me and make me the kind of person You want me to be. AMEN.
MEMORY VERSE:
John 5:24
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal
life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”
Rev. 21:8
“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons
and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and
brimstone, which is the second death.”
13
REPENTANCE
OBJECTIVE: To fully understand that repentance is required from believers as proof of their
salvation.
LESSON:
You may meet a person who claims to have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior and says he or
she is a child of God. Yet because of their questionable way of life, for example: he/she is
involved in sexual immorality, has addictions or habitual sins, does not read the Bible regularly,
and does not fellowship with other believers, what will you think? That person claims to be
saved because he or she believes in Jesus. But would you think that such a person is really
saved?
The answer is we don’t know for sure because Christians still sin. But if this pattern continues in
that person’s life without having any regard for God, then that person may not have truly
accepted Jesus as his/her Lord and Savior.
The truth is—there are those who say they are Christians, but are really not. They are FAKE
Christians. Our Lord Jesus Himself tells us about them. Read Matthew 7:21-23.
2. What do they claim? They claim to know the Lord, but live a lifestyle of sin.
3. How else did Jesus describe the fake Christians? (Matthew 7:22) Those who claim to
know the Lord on the basis of good works, but still live unrighteous lives
What kind of “spiritual” works did they perform? Prophecy (i.e. preaching or teaching
the Bible), casting out demons, doing miracles in the name of Jesus
But what did Jesus call them? (23) Evildoers
How does their “spiritual” work appear before God? (Isaiah 64:6) Why? Like filthy rags
because their works have become contaminated by their uncleanness
4. Read Luke 13:24-26. How else did Jesus describe fake Christians? (26) Those who claim
to be Christians on the basis of fellowship (we ate and drank in your presence), but
still live ungodly lives.
Who are these? People who attend worship services, partake of the Lord’s Supper,
etc...yet live a lifestyle of sin.
5. How else did Jesus describe the fake Christians? (26b) Those who claim to be
Christians on the basis of participation in church activities, but are still disobedient to
the Lord.
14
Who are these? People who attend bible studies, small groups, etc…yet the continue
to disobey God as a way of life.
What did Jesus call all of them? (27) Evildoers
People tend to put confidence in their rituals in order to earn God’s favor. What is
important to God is that we obey Him.
6. In verse 28, what did Jesus say would happen to them when Judgment Day comes?
There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth … they will be thrown out
7. Where will these people go? (Rev. 21:8) To the lake that burns with fire and
brimstone: HELL.
8. Why isn’t there a different penalty for murderers and liars? (James 2:11) Because the
one who commanded DO NOT MURDER is the same one who commanded DO NOT
LIE. God commanded both and if you disobey either one, you disobey God.
Is God unfair? (James 2:11) God will treat any sin equally. When you sin you are going
against God.
ILLUSTRATION: To pass God’s test we need a mark of 100% because 99% is never enough
according to His standard.
1. Read Luke 3:7-8. Why were multitudes coming to John the Baptist? (7) They wanted to
flee from the wrath to come
Why was John the Baptist harsh with them and called them a “brood of vipers”?
Because while they wanted to flee from God’s judgment, they were unwilling to
forsake their sins
What things were they depending on to save them? They were relying on their
baptism and their heritage from Abraham as his descendants
The multitudes were trusting on the baptism experience and their being Jews (“God’s
Chosen people”) to grant them access to God’s kingdom. Today what are the similar
elements that people are counting on to gain them entry into heaven?
What did John say is needed in their lives? (verse 8) Repentance is evidenced by
changed lives
15
What did he do to try to correct his sin? Returned the 30 pieces of silver,
acknowledged his sin but hanged himself.
(Although he acknowledged his sin, he did not turn to God. And because of his
desperation and hopelessness, he hanged himself.)
Would you say that this is an example of genuine repentance? Why or why not? In
order for us to arrive at the proper conclusion, we need to determine the biblical
definition of repentance,
Repentance is from the Greek word METANOIA, which is a compound word: META
*after+ + NOEO *to know+. It therefore literally means “the after-knowledge” or “the
changing of the mind consequent to the after knowledge of sin”
Repentance means a turning away from sin towards God brought about by a change
of heart.
• A thief after caught stealing, pleads for mercy and says, “I’m sorry”, for fear of
being thrown into jail but without having the willingness to change.
• A child after disobeying his parents, cries and says, “I’m sorry”, for fear of being
disciplined but without having a change of heart.
How does genuine repentance happen? (2 Corinthians 7:9-10) It starts with sorrow,
then repentance, leading to the experience of divine grace and forgiveness, resulting
in salvation.
What is meant by “Worldly sorrow”? It is a self-centered sorrow with the possible
results of depression, hopelessness, self-pity, blaming others, blaming God, seeking
revenge, etc…
ILLUSTRATION: Repentance is like a man who is walking away from God, then he
realizes that he is headed in the wrong direction. At one point in his life he then
decides to make a 180-degree turn towards God.
According to the Apostle Paul, what kind of people shall not inherit God’s
kingdom? (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)?
* Fornicators
* Idolaters
* Adulterers
* Effeminate or Homosexual
16
What did Paul mean when he said, “Such were some of you”? These sins were in the
past. This means that these people truly repented of their sins.
What evidence did John say should be seen in a person’s life as a fruit/manifestation
of his repentance? (1 John 2:3-4) He obeys the commandments of Jesus.
APPLICATION:
1. What changes have occurred in your life since you accepted the Lord?
2. List areas in your life that you feel should be under the control of Jesus.
If you have received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, but you are living in sin, you need to turn
away from your sinful ways and pursue righteousness. You need to seek His forgiveness, repent
and change your way of life.
“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should obey its lusts, and do not go
on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness, but present
yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of
righteousness to God.” (Rom. 6:12, 13)
But if you have not received Jesus Christ and are willing to forsake your sins, make that step
right now to repent and ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior. The Bible promises in Revelation
3:20 that Jesus will come into our lives if we invite Him.
Let us therefore express our complete confidence in His finished work on the cross by saying
this prayer.
PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, I admit that I have sinned against You and because of this I know that I deserve to
be punished. I am repenting of all of my sins and I thank You for providing me with a solution -
Your sacrificial death on the cross which paid for all of my sins. Today, I put my trust in You as
my Savior and Lord. I would like to open my heart now and invite You, Lord Jesus, to come into
my life. I also accept Your gift of eternal life. Please come into my life and change me according
to Your ways. Amen.
MEMORY VERSES:
James 2:10
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of
all.”
Rev. 3:20
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will
come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me.”
17
THE ONLY WAY
OBJECTIVE: To clarify that there is only ONE WAY to Heaven based on God’s revelation--
- JESUS CHRIST IS THE ONLY WAY.
LESSON:
SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY THEORIES AND OUR ETERNAL DESTINY IS AT STAKE, LET
US DETERMINE WHAT GOD HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS ISSUE. READ GALATIANS 1: 1-12.
2. Verse 1
a. Who is the author? Paul
b. Who sent him? Jesus Christ
c. Whom is he representing? God
d. What is the credential of Paul? An apostle
6. Verse 6 --- What was the problem Paul was concerned with?
The Galatians were turning to a different gospel.
What was Paul’s reaction? Amazed!!!
7. In verse 7, what were some people doing something to the gospel of Christ? They
were distorting the gospel of Christ
How were they distorting the gospel? By presenting a gospel that appeared to be the
same but was not really the same.
18
WHAT IS THE TRUE GOSPEL?
THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM WE ARE FACING TODAY !
MANY ARE PROCLAIMING HIS IS THE RIGHT WAY !
HOW CAN WE KNOW THE RIGHT WAY FOR SURE ?
GAL. 1:8-9
• Can anyone change the gospel of Christ?
How about an apostle ? an angel?
No one can change the Gospel!
Christ died for our sins, He was buried and He rose on the third day.
Evidence: There were many witnesses (Verse 5)
How many gospels are there? Only ONE
THE GOSPEL – JESUS CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS, HE WAS BURIED, AND HE RESURRECTED
ON THE THIRD DAY.
Read Romans 1:16. What can the TRUE GOSPEL do? IT CAN SAVE
The gospel cannot be changed. What is the warning in Rev. 22:18-19, Prov. 30:5-6? Adding or
subtracting anything from God’s Word will bring about punishment.
19
Eph. 2:8-9
• We are saved by what ? By grace
• Through what? Faith
• Can good works save us? No
• Do we need to add anything to what Jesus did on the cross for us?
No
• According to these verses, what is salvation? A gift
Titus 3:5 --
• How are we saved ? According to God’s mercy, not on the basis of deeds
we have done in righteousness.
B) What about OBEYING THE TEN COMMANDMENTS? Will this save us?
James 2:10-11
• What is God’s standard? If you break one, you break all.
• How do you describe God’s standard ?
• Hard? Difficult ? Impossible ? Unreasonable?
• Why, then, did God give us the Ten
Commandments? Romans 3:20
• Through the commandments come the knowledge of sin.
• The commandments are like a mirror.
• The commandments show us that we are sinners.
ILLUSTRATION: If your face is dirty, is it the fault of the mirror? The mirror is merely an
instrument for you to know that you need to clean yourself. You have the option to ignore
your unseemliness or act on it.
20
Let’s review what we have learned about the gospel:
2. Rom. 6:23 tells us that there is a penalty for sin. What is the penalty? Death
3. What kind of death is this? Read Rev. 21:8. The second death which is
eternal death or separation from God.
4. What is Jesus claiming in John 14:6? I am the Way, and the Truth, and
the Life. No one comes to the Father but through Me.
If you were to change the article “the” to “a” this will change the entire meaning of
the verse. For example: If Jesus said that He is “a” way, then it would imply that there
are other ways to heaven. However, Jesus makes it very clear that “He is THE WAY”
therefore, no one can come to the Father except through Him.
5. In John 3:16, what condition does Jesus say is required to avoid eternal
death and to have eternal life? Believe in Him
And if you believe in what the gospel says, that Jesus died and paid for your sins, and
you would like to turn away from your sins, Jesus is giving you His gift of eternal life if
you are willing to trust in Him to save you. The true gospel tells you that you cannot
save yourself from your sins, only your faith in Jesus will save you.
You can have this gift of eternal life through a simple prayer of faith.
1. ADMIT THAT YOU ARE A SINNER AND EXPRESS YOUR DESIRE TO REPENT.
21
3. CLAIM JESUS’ PROMISE THAT IF YOU OPEN THE DOOR OF YOUR HEART, HE
WILL COME IN.
FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS THEIR BELIEF IN THE PROMISES OF JESUS,
YOU CAN SAY THIS PRAYER:
PRAYER:
LORD JESUS I ADMIT THAT I AM A SINNER. I KNOW THAT I CANNOT SAVE MYSELF
THROUGH MY OWN EFFORTS. I TRUST IN YOU TO SAVE ME FROM HELL BECAUSE YOU
DIED FOR ALL OF MY SINS EVEN THOUGH I AM NOT WORTHY. I BELIEVE YOU ROSE
AGAIN FROM THE DEAD. I OPEN THE DOOR OF MY HEART AND INVITE YOU TO COME
INTO MY LIFE. I TRUST IN YOU TO BE MY LORD AND SAVIOR; TO FORGIVE ALL OF MY
SINS AND GIVE ME YOUR GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE. BY YOUR POWER I COMMIT TO TURN
AWAY FROM MY SINS AND FOLLOW YOU. TAKE CONTROL OF MY LIFE. THANK YOU
FOR COMING INTO MY LIFE AND MAKE ME THE KIND OF PERSON YOU WANT ME TO
BE. AMEN.
MEMORY VERSES:
John 14:6
“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the
Father, but through Me.”
Ephesians 2:8-9
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the
gift of God; *9+ not as a result of works, that no one should boast.”

ASSURANCE
OF SALVATION
LEADER’S GUIDE
1
ASSURANCE OF SALVATION
OBJECTIVE: To be assured of having eternal life and a personal relationship with God if we place
our faith in Jesus Christ.
LESSON:
God does not want us to live in doubt with regard to our eternal destiny. He wants us
to live with peace, joy and the assurance of eternal life. If you believe in Jesus Christ,
you can be certain that you have eternal life. To believe in Jesus Christ is not just an
intellectual exercise but rather an act of total dependence upon Him to save you.
ILLUSTRATION: If you were in a plane that was about to crash, in order to be saved you
need to put on a parachute and jump. When you jump, you have to trust completely
in the parachute to save you. Even if you kicked your legs and moved your arms, there
would be nothing you could do to bring yourself down safely. You have to totally
depend on the parachute. In the same way, you must trust in Jesus alone to save you.
There is nothing you can do to go to heaven on your own.
When you trusted in Jesus Christ to save you and received Him into your heart as your
Savior and Lord, many things happened to you. In this lesson, we will examine what
these things are.
2. Where is this life found? This life is in His Son, Jesus Christ.
3. If you have Jesus Christ, what do you have? You have eternal life.
Eternal life begins the moment you trust in Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and
Lord. You receive the life of God when Jesus Christ enters your life.
4. Read John 10:28-30. What assurance does Jesus give us in verse 28? Jesus gives us
eternal life and we will never perish because no one can snatch us from His hand.
What other assurance can we find in verse 29? There is no one greater than the
Father, and we are also in the His hand.
These verses give us the assurance of double security since they tell us that we are in
the hands of Jesus and the Father from whom no one can take us away. You can be
sure of having eternal life because the penalty for our sins has been fully paid for and
settled by the death of Jesus on the cross. This is our next point.
2
II. All of your sins have been forgiven.
1. According to Colossians 2:13, what happened to your sins? Jesus has forgiven them
2. How many of your sins have been forgiven? ALL of them – past, present and future.
Jesus paid for all of our sins in advance.
When you trust in Jesus Christ to come into your heart the sins that separated you
from God are forgiven so you now have a personal and eternal relationship with God.
ILLUSTRATION: We all have earthly fathers. Let’s assume that you made a grievous
mistake and offended him. Does that mean that he is no longer your father? Of course
not. Your fellowship may be affected but it does not change the status of your
relationship! He is still your father and you are still his child. However, you need to
restore your fellowship with him. So it is with our heavenly Father. Once you become
a child of God, your relationship with God will never be broken. But when we sin, it
affects our fellowship with Him.
3. In 1 John 1:9, what do we need to do to restore our fellowship with Him? We need to
confess our sins.
What does it mean to confess your sins to God? To confess is not just saying “sorry” to
God. It means to agree with God that what you have done is wrong and then to repent
and turn away from your sins, and thank Him for His forgiveness.
What does God promise to do when we confess our sins to Him? He promises to
forgive us and cleanse us from all of our unrighteousness.
Christians are brand-new people on the inside. God gives them new lives and they are
not the same anymore. We are not reformed, rehabilitated, or reeducated— instead
we are re-created (new creations). We are beginning a new life under a new Master.
If you have sincerely trusted in Jesus Christ to save you and have received Him as your
Lord and Savior, you would want to avoid sin and seek to please and obey Him. Sin
should be the exception to the rule in your life and not a lifestyle.
3
ILLUSTRATION: Even though you give a pig a bath, put perfume on him and tie a bow
around his neck, when you let him go, he will go back to the mud puddle and wallow
in it. Why? Because he is a pig! And that’s what pigs do: wallow in the mud. In
contrast, a sheep may fall into the mud but will immediately get out of it because he
has a sheep’s heart and does not like the mud.
APPLICATION:
1 John 1:5-10 and 1 John 2:3-6, 7-11. How should we live our new life in Christ?
1. We must no longer walk in darkness but in fellowship with God. (1 John 1:5-7)
2. We should not treat sin lightly, knowing that Jesus died to pay for our sins. We
must confess all known sin in our life and repent (we must change our attitude
towards sin). (1 John 1:8-10)
3. We must obey His commandments. This proves we are followers of Jesus. (1 John
2:3-6)
4. We must love others as a sign that we truly love Him and belong to Him. (1 John 2:
7-11)
MEMORY VERSE:
1 John 5:11-13
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.
He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have
life.
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you
may know that you have eternal life.
4
THE BASIS OF FORGIVENESS:
THE BLOOD OF CHRIST
OBJECTIVE: To have confidence that our sins have been forgiven because of the blood of Jesus.
LESSON:
People have differing views about the basis of our forgiveness. What are some of the
views that people have? If someone were to ask you, “What is the basis of
forgiveness,” what would you say? Would you agree that we need to know what God
has declared to be the basis of forgiveness? It is when we understand God’s basis of
forgiveness that we can have the assurance of our salvation. In this lesson, we will
study what the Bible says about forgiveness, the significance of the death of Jesus
Christ as it relates to our forgiveness, and how this truth should impact our lives.
What does God require as the payment for sin according to these two verses? Why do
you think He requires this? He requires death, the shedding of blood. Why? Life is in
the blood. When blood is shed, life is taken. God wants us to realize that sin is such a
serious offense against Him Who is perfect and holy that He requires a life to pay for
it.
You will see that even before God gave the Law or the Ten Commandments to Moses,
He required an animal sacrifice to save the Israelites from His judgment. We read
about this in the book of Exodus. As a background, God’s people were in bondage in
Egypt. When God sent Moses to tell the Pharaoh of Egypt to let the Israelites go,
Pharaoh refused to obey God. So God sent nine plagues to judge Egypt for their
idolatry, to show Pharaoh His power, and to convince him to release the Israelites. But
Pharaoh was stubborn and hard hearted and he disregarded God’s judgments. So God
sent the last and ultimate plague.
2. What was that last plague according to Exodus 12:12-13? God was going to strike
down and kill all of the first-born of both beast and man in Egypt.
3. What were God’s instructions to the Israelites in order for them to be saved from His
judgment? Read Exodus 12:3, 5, 21-23. They were to kill a lamb, sprinkle the blood on
their door posts and remain inside their houses until morning.
What kind of lamb did God require according to verse 5? It had to be unblemished,
male, and a year old.
If God would see the blood on the doorpost, what did He promise to do? He promised
to pass over that house and spare the first-born.
5
4. What do you think would motivate the Israelites to obey Moses’ instructions to kill a
lamb, sprinkle the blood on their door posts and remain inside their houses? Faith!
God kept His word and spared the first-born of the sons of Israel because of the blood
of the lamb. But He killed all the first born of the Egyptians. God told Moses to call this
event the Passover. This event is still being celebrated by the Jews until today. When
the angel of death saw the lamb’s blood on the doorposts, he passed over the house
and did not kill the firstborn in that house.
When God gave His system of laws to Israel, He also established a sacrificial system for
the payment of people’s sins.
What was required if someone sinned in verse 3? He was to bring a male animal from
their herd without defect.
What was he to do with the animal in verses 4 & 5? He was to lay his hands on the
animal and then kill it.
What was the meaning of the person laying his hands on the head of the animal
before killing it? The sinner was transferring his sins to the animal.
“Atonement” requires substitution – at that moment, the sinner becomes “one” with
the animal which would bear his sins and die for the sins. (i.e. “at one” ment)
What was the priest to do with the blood in verse 5? The priest shall sprinkle the
blood on the altar.
The sacrificial system of the Old Testament continued for over 1,500 years. However,
it was only temporary until God gave His perfect sacrifice for sin, the death of Jesus
Christ on the cross.
6. What did John the Baptist call Jesus Christ in John 1:29? The Lamb of
God. What was the mission of Jesus? To take away the sins of the world.
8. According to 2 Corinthians 5:21, why was Jesus without blemish? He was without
sin. He was perfect.
9. Read Matthew 26:1-2. When did Jesus die? This happened during the Feast of
the Passover. The Last Supper was the celebration of the Passover Meal.
6
This happened to demonstrate that Jesus is our Passover Lamb. When we place
our faith and trust in Jesus to save us, God applies the blood of Jesus to our lives
and does not judge us for our sins anymore, but passes over us.
10. In Matthew 26:28, what did Jesus claim? He will pour out His blood for the
forgiveness of sins.
11. Read Colossians 2:13-14. How many of your sins has God forgiven? Jesus paid for
all of our sins in advance.
When we say “all”, does this include our future sins? Yes, because when Jesus
died 2,000 years ago, all of our sins were future sins. He died paying for all of the
sins of our whole life (past, present and future).
ILLUSTRATION:
ALL OF OUR SINS WERE PAID FOR IN ADVANCE
What did Jesus cancel and nail to the cross? Our certificate of debt.
12. Read Hebrews 10:10-14. How many times did Jesus have to die and offer His
body as a sacrifice to pay for our sins? Once for all.
How is the practice of priests compared with that of Christ? The priests offer the
same sacrifice time after time which can never take away sins. But Jesus Christ
offered only ONE sacrifice for all time.
After Christ’s sacrifice, what did He do? Jesus sat down at the right hand of God
to signify that He had already finished His work.
7
APPLICATION:
1. We have confidence to enter into God’s presence through the blood of Jesus.
(v.19)
2. We are to draw near with a sincere heart, in full assurance of faith. (v.22)
3. We are to hold fast to our confession of faith. (v.23)
4. We are to encourage one another to love and good deeds. (v.24)
5. We are not to forsake meeting together. (v.25)
6. We are not to keep on sinning. (v.26)
Knowing that we have been forgiven by God should encourage us to avoid sin and not
to turn God’s grace into licentiousness.
Is there any recurring sin in your life? Confess them to Jesus and repent now!
MEMORY VERSE:
Hebrews 9:22 “In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and
without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.”
8
THE ANATOMY OF SIN
OBJECTIVE: To make people aware of Satan’s strategy to tempt them to sin.
Open by reviewing important points covered in the previous studies. How God looks at sin:
1. One sin is enough to condemn you
2. All men have sinned and are dammed without Jesus Christ
3. Our condition is humanly incurable
James 2:10 - According to this verse, how does God look at sin?
1. One sin is enough to condemn you.
2. Break one commandment and you have broken all.
Rom. 3:23 - How does God look at man, according to this verse?
All men have sinned, all fall short of His standards.
LESSON:
This passage in Genesis 3 is rich in theological truth and practical lessons. This account reveals
Satan’s basic strategy and methods to get people, including believers, to sin against God.
In Adam and Eve’s failure, we see how vulnerable we are to the schemes of Satan and that
when we sin, our instinctive reaction is shame and guilt.
By looking at how God dealt with the first sin, we see how He looks at sin and how he deals
with our own sin today.
I. SATAN’S STRATEGY
1. In Verse 1, we immediately see the methods which the Devil uses to lure us into
his trap. He used this on Eve by asking her a simple question. What was the
question? “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?’”
2. What was the purpose of Satan in raising that question? To make her question
God’s Word.
4. What did God really say in Gen.2:16-17? Eat freely from any tree but from the
tree of knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat.
9
Notice that God never said that if you touch it, you will die. Adding to God’s
explicit word is dangerous. We need to know God’s revealed word so we will not
be misled or be confused by the devil.
5. Sensing that Eve did not accurately understand God’s command, what was
Satan’s next step in Verse 4? To deny the word of God (To deny the consequences
of disobedience).
6. This was immediately followed by the devil’s third step in Verse 5. What was it?
To cast DOUBT on God’s character.
Satan made Eve believe that God was not good and that He did not want them to eat
the fruit because of His pride. This was in direct contradiction to what God told Adam
in Gen. 2:17 when He said, “You shall surely die.”
Satan would like people to minimize the consequence of sin and blindly believe in
the benefit of sin. Our best defense against this tactic is to know God’s Word.
10
3. How do we instinctively react when we sin, according to Verses 7-13?
• We try to solve our problem our own way (v.7) (sewed fig leaves)
• We are ashamed.
• We blame everyone but ourselves. We don’t assume responsibility for our
sins (vv. 11-13)
Note: The fig leaves were not a permanent solution. They merely illustrated how
we try to hide from the presence of God and cover up sin.
4. What human frailty did Satan choose to appeal to in Gen. 3:4-5? Vanity &
human pride (Apparently, these are our biggest weaknesses!)
What is the biggest stumbling block between God and man? Pride
One cannot be saved unless he sets aside all pride and humbles himself before
God.
5. Let’s go back to Gen. 3:6-7. What was the sin that Adam and Eve committed?
Disobedience
- This was a small sin by today’s standards.
In Verses 9 and 11 - He knows the answers but why does He still ask?
• God offers us a chance to confess and to acknowledge our sins.
11
3. God Himself provides the solution.
4. Do you catch yourself blaming others and not assuming responsibility for your sin, as
Adam blamed Eve, and as Eve blamed the snake?
What does God promise to the believer under temptation? A way out
Say no to sin and take God’s way out.
MEMORY VERSE:
1 Cor. 10:13
“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who
will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will
provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.”
12
SAVING FAITH
OBJECTIVE: To realize that there is only one kind of faith that guarantees our salvation.
What are the aspects of saving faith? Is there faith that does not save?
LESSON:
1. According to Heb 11:6, What do we need to please God? Faith
• Why is it so important? Without faith it is impossible to please God. It is a
requirement!
• Faith is believing God is who He claims to be in His Word, and it is believing that
He rewards those who seek Him.
Saving faith is trusting in Jesus Christ alone to forgive our sins and give us His free gift of
eternal life – not in good works or in religion.
13
• According to Luke 17:5-6 - Do I need great faith to be saved? You only need faith
as small as a mustard seed because it is the object of your faith that is critical.
• The object of your faith must be reliable, otherwise your faith is useless.
ILLUSTRATION: A thin man with “big faith” thought of crossing a frozen lake, but when he
stepped on the ice, he fell straight through the ice and into the water. The object of his faith
(the thin ice) was not reliable even if his faith was “BIG”.
Another man weighing 300 lbs. who had very little faith, also had to cross another frozen lake.
He was afraid that the ice would not be able to hold his weight. But when he tried to cross the
lake, he was able to do so because the ice was thick enough to carry his weight even if his faith
was “SMALL”.
Your faith must have the right object. What are you trusting in? If you are trusting in an object
that is reliable, then your faith will work no matter how big or small your faith is.
• According to Romans 10:17, where does faith come from? Faith comes from hearing the
Word of God.
• Our faith in Christ increases as our knowledge of God’s Word increases.
• The Bible, God’s Word, should be the basis of our faith and obedience.
Hebrews 11:7 commends Noah for his saving faith. Let us look closely at his life in Genesis 6
through 8:
1. How is Noah described in Gen. 6:9? A righteous man, blameless in his time, walked with
God.
2. What was the condition of the earth during his time? (vv. 11-12) Corrupt in the sight of
God; filled with violence; all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth
3. What did God say to Noah in verse 13? He was about to destroy all flesh.
14
Noah had no concept of rain because it had never rained on earth. Were God’s
instructions to Noah sensible? Why or why not? No! Noah had to make the ark on dry
land where it was close to a forest; Gathering the animals was not only foolish, it was
also dangerous.
How did Noah respond in verse 22? Noah did according to ALL that God commanded
him
Also, notice the repetitions of the phrase “The Lord said to Noah…” and “Noah did” (7:1,
5, 9, 16; 8:15, 18)
How long did it take Noah to build the ark? (6:3) 120 years
What did he do while building the ark? (1 Peter 3:19, 20; 2 Peter 2:5) He preached
righteousness
What, do you suppose, did Noah’s neighbors and friends think about him? He was crazy
What do these verses prove about Noah? He heard God’s Word and he acted on it even
if it did not seem sensible. He even warned his neighbors--He believed God
What does this teach us about Saving Faith?
a) The basis is God’s Word — not our feelings or our own understanding (Prov. 3:5)
b) It is not enough that we know—we need to act on God’s Word
c) We may expect the world to laugh at us but we still need to warn them of God’s
impending wrath and the reality of HELL.
What is the most important element of faith? The basis or object of our faith
6. What did God say would happen to those who would not enter the ark? (Gen. 6:17)
They (everything) will perish
7. What happened to those who did not believe God’s warning through Noah? (Gen. 7:17-
24) Every living thing perished
8. Read 2 Peter 3:3-14. What do we need to learn from the days of Noah? Another
judgment will come that will destroy everything.
How would you summarize the key points we’ve studied in this lesson?
1. We need Faith to please God.
2. The object of our Faith should be God and His word.
3. The test of our Faith is complete obedience to God.
APPLICATION:
1. What does God want you to do? (2 Corinthians 13:5) Test yourselves if you are in the
Faith.
2. How do you know if you are in the faith? (5) If you recognize that Jesus Christ is in you, if
you are OBEDIENT to God.
3. How do you recognize that Jesus Christ is in you? Or what evidences manifest His being
in you?
Do you have a passion to please God?
15
Do you sincerely try to avoid sin?
Are you hungry for God’s Word?
Do you have a heartfelt desire to obey God?
Is God, not something else, the only object of your faith?
MEMORY VERSE:
Hebrews 11:6
“And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that
He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.”
16
THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER
OBJECTIVE: To help us evaluate our spiritual life and determine its present condition.
LESSON:
READ LUKE 8: 4-15
What is a parable? A story about everyday life which illustrates a spiritual truth.
Who can understand parables? Read verse 10. Only believers
At times, Jesus would teach by using illustrations, or parables, especially when speaking to
crowds. The purpose of using a parable is to compare something familiar with something
unfamiliar. It helps us understand spiritual truth by using everyday experiences and objects.
What are the two objects that Jesus emphasizes in this parable? The seed and the soil.
What does the seed represent? God's word
--- see also: 1 pet 1:23 - the imperishable seed (God's word)
What does the soil represent? The hearer's heart
1. THE ROADSIDE (HARD) SOIL --- THE UNRECEPTIVE HEART (Luke 8:5, 12; Matt 13:19)
--- Visualize a beaten path or a hardened soil on which nothing grows
What happens when seed falls on such soil, according to verse 19?
The seed is promptly taken away by Satan and those who hear do not believe and are
not saved
--- see also: 2 Cor 4:3,4 - blinded minds / perishing hearts
Hebrews 3:7, 8 - talks about the hardened hearts of the Israelites
Unbelievers today are likened to the Israelites who were chastised for 40 years in the desert for
their unbelief and therefore never saw the Promised Land.
2. THE ROCKY SOIL --- THE SHALLOW HEART (Luke 8:6, 13; Matt. 13: 20-21)
--- Visualize a stony ground – the seed germinates but the roots cannot take hold
--- Note in Luke 8:13 and Matt. 13: 20, there is an initial burst of joy but the “hearer” of the
word falls away as affliction comes into his life.

What possible afflictions and/or persecutions will we go through because of the word?
a) Read John 15:18-21 - Hatred and ridicule of the world
b) Read Rev. 2:10 - Persecution from Satan
c) Luke 21:16-17 – Persecuted by the family.
God’s word is very clear that true believers will encounter persecution in this world!
2 Timothy 3:12 – “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted”
3. THE THORNY SOIL --- THE DISTRACTED HEART (Luke 8: 7, 14; Matt.13:22)
--- Visualize a plant situated in a crowded and thorny patch. Instead of thriving, it becomes thin
and scraggly as it competes with other plants growing around it
What causes this plant to be choked? The worries of the world and the deceitfulness of riches.
--- Worries: any burden, problem or decision that preoccupies a person to the point of choking
out the word
--- Deceitfulness of riches: anything that gives a false sense of security and happiness such as
money, power and position
--- What happens as a consequence of the worries of life and the deceitfulness of riches? The
hearer becomes unfruitful or unable to accomplish what God desires in his/her life.
The problem is having a wrong perspective and priorities.
Read Matt. 6:19,20 – earthly riches won’t last but true riches remain for all eternity.
Matt. 6:33 tells us that we should seek first His kingdom and all these things will added to us.
4. THE GOOD SOIL --- THE OPEN AND FERTILE HEART (Luke 8:8, 15; Matt. 13:23)
--- Visualize a fertile and verdant field with rich, lush plants and trees producing fruit in
abundance
What are the evidences of a good soil? There is fruitfulness.
According to Matt.7:24, how do you distinguish a wise man? He hears the word and acts on
them.
What distinguished the good ground was its fruitfulness. Fruitfulness distinguishes Christians
from hypocrites. Jesus did not say that this good ground had no stones or no thorns in it; but
none that could hinder its fruitfulness. When the person becomes aware of them, they remove
them. We are not all alike but we can all be 100% fruitful.
18
APPLICATION:
1. What is the present condition of your heart? Are you standing on hard soil?
--- Has your heart been hardened by pride?
--- Does God's word leave you cold and unmoved?
--- Hebrews 3:15 commands us not to harden our hearts - the choice is yours!
The four types of soil represent different responses to God’s message. Although we may react
differently depending on our stage of spiritual growth, the real issue is the true condition of our
hearts. Some hearts are hardened, others are shallow, others may be contaminated by
distracting worries, yet some are receptive and eager to obey God’s word.
19
How has God’s word taken root in your life? What kind of heart do you want to have? Let God
reveal to you the true condition of your heart. Ask God’s Spirit to search your heart and let you
see any hurtful or unpleasing way that may be in you. If there is a need to seek to confess and
renounce any sin, seek Him and ask the Lord to change your heart and make you right with
Him.
MEMORY VERSE:
Ezekiel 36:26
“Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the
heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”
Hebrews 3:7-8
“So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, *8+ do not harden your hearts as you
did in the rebellion, during the time of testing in the desert,”

Water Baptism
Session 1
FOLLOWING CHRIST
“Salvation is free but discipleship will cost you everything”
“ Ang kaligtasan ay libre… subalit sa pagsunod kay Cristo ay kailangang isuko ang
lahat”
27
And no one can be my disciple who does not carry his own cross and follow me.
28
”But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building
without first getting estimates and then checking to see if he has enough money to pay the
bills?
“Is there anyone here who, planning to build a new house, doesn’t first sit down and
29
figure the cost so you’ll know if you can complete it? If you only get the foundation laid and
then run out of money, you’re going to look pretty foolish. Everyone passing by will poke fun at
30 31
you: ’He started something he couldn’t finish.’ ”Or can you imagine a king going into battle
against another king without first deciding whether it is possible with his ten thousand troops
to face the twenty thousand troops of the other?
33
And if decides he can’t, won’t he send an emissary and work out a truce? ”Simply, put,
if you’re not willing to take what is dearest to you, whether plans or people, and kiss it
goodbye, you can’t be my disciple.
IN OTHER WORDS:
Christ Must Be NUMBER 1 in Our Lives!
John 14:15
“If you love me, you will obey my commandments.
Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been
19
given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
20
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to
obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the
very end of the age.”
FAITH IN + BAPTISM = 2
SALVATION
JESUS
FAITH IN + NOTHING = 3
GOOD WORKS
JESUS (INCLUDING
SALVATION BAPTISM)
5
Practically every Jew in town who watched me grow up- and if they were willing to
stick their necks out they’d tell you in person in person- knows that I lived as a strict Pharisee,
6
the most demanding branch of our religion… It’s because I believed it and took it seriously,
7
committed myself heart and soul to what God promised my ancestors- the identical hope,
mind you, that the twelve tribes have lived for night and day all these centuries- it’s because I
have held on to this tested and tried hope that I’m being called on the carpet by the Jews. They
should be the ones standing trial here, not me!
8
For the life of me, I can’t see why it’s a criminal offense to believe that God raises the
9
dead, ”I admit that I didn’t always hold to this position. For a time I thought it was my duty to
10
oppose this Jesus of Nazareth with all my might backed with the full authority of the high
priests, I threw these believers- I had no idea they were God’s people!- into the Jerusalem jail
11
right and left and whenever it came to a vote, I voted for their execution I stormed through
their meeting places, bullying them into cursing Jesus, a one-man terror obsessed with
obliterating these people. And then I started on the towns outside Jerusalem.
12
One day on my way to Damascus, armed as always with papers from the high priests
13
authorizing my action, right in the middle of the day a blaze of light, light outshining the sun,
14
poured out of the sky on me and my companions. Oh, King, it was so bright! We fell flat on
our faces. Then I heard a voice in Hebrew: ‘Saul, Saul, why are you out to get me? Why do you
15
insist on going against the grain? ”I said, ‘Who are you, Master?’ “The voice answered, ‘I am
16
Jesus, the One you’re hunting down like an animal. But now, up on your feet- I have a job for
you…
..,I’ve handpicked you to be a servant and witness to what’s happened today, and to
17 18
what I am going to show you I’m sending you off ’to open the eyes of the outsiders so they
can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between
Satan and God, and choose God. I’m sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a
place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in
me.’
22
They want to keep God for themselves But God has stood by me, just as he promised,
and I’m standing here saying what I’ve been saying to anyone, whether king or child, who will
listen. And everything I’m saying is completely in line with what the prophets and Moses said
23
would happen: One, the Messiah must die; two, raised from the dead, he would be the first
rays of God’s daylight shining on people far and near, people both godless and God-fearing.”
Acts 16:31-33
They answered, “Believed in the Lord Jesus, and you and your family will be saved.”
32 33
They spoke the Lord’s word to the jailer and everyone in his home. At that hour of
the night, the jailer washed Paul and Silas’ wounds. The jailer and his entire family were
baptized immediately.
John 14:15
“If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Baptism is the first step of discipleship after you have received Jesus Christ by faith.
We want to be obedient to Jesus’ Great Commission.
2. It is an act of identification
a. Identification with His death
Romans 6:3
Or do you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have
been baptized into His death?
b. Identification with His burial
Romans 6:4a
4
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death…
c. Identification with His resurrection
Romans 6:4b-5
…in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the
5
Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united
with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of
His resurrection.
4. It is an act of witness
Matthew 28:19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit…”
As you go through baptism, remember that you are declaring to GOD, the world and
yourself that you are committing to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

IX. What It Means To Be A
Member
The structure of the church should not be determined by culture, business practices,
or even traditions. It should be based on the Bible. The nature of the church, as revealed in
the Bible, determines its structure.
46(A) (B)
Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread
from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and
sincerity of heart. Acts 2:46
19 (A) (B)
The churches of Asia greet you Aquila and Prisca greet you heartily in the Lord, with
(C)
the church that is in their house. 1 Corinthians 16:19
42 (A)
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and
(B) (C)
to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Acts 2:42
3 (A)
being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”
Ephesians 4:3
17 (A)
But in giving this instruction, I do not praise you, because you come together
18
not for the better but for the worse. For, in the first place, when you come
(B)
together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and in part I believe
it.” 1 Corinthians 11:17-18
C. THE CHURCH IS CALLED THE BODY OF CHRIST, CHRIST BEING THE HEAD. IT IS NOT A
RELIGIOUS ORDER
27 (A) (B)
Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.” Corinthians 12:27
18 (A) (B) (C) (D)
He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the
firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.”
Colossians 1:18
1. We are the BODY, the ARMS and the LEGS, the extension of Christ, the visible
representation of Christ on earth.
19 (A) (B)
and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being
supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth
which is from God.” Colossians 2:19
17(A) (B)
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls
as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for
this would be unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17
17 (A) (B)
From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called to him the elders of the church.
18 (C)
And when they had come to him, he said to them, "You yourselves know, from the
first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you the whole time” Acts 20:17-18
5 (A)
For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and
(B) (C) 6 (D)
appoint elders in every city as I directed you, namely, if any man is above
(E)
reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of
(F) (G) 7 (H) (I)
dissipation or rebellion. For the overseer must be above reproach as God's
(J) (K)
steward, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not addicted to wine, not
(L)
pugnacious, not fond of sordid gain.” Titus 1:5-7
17(A) (B)
The elders who rule well are to be considered worthy of double honor,
(C)
especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching.” 1 Timothy 5:17
There are many good churches in many places. What unifies all of us is the life of
Christ in us, which is shown in the following essentials.
GROUP DISCUSSION
1. Define in your own words what a church is?
2. How does one become part of the universal and local church?
3. What is the value of belonging to a small group within the local church? What’s wrong
with being a ‘lone ranger’ Christian?
4. If all believers are part of the Church (Christ’s body), what attitude should we cultivate
between members of other denominations (churches)?
5. What makes JILGM distinct from other churches?
6. Why is it important to recognize the different members of Christ’s body yet
remain united? Does united mean we must all have the same opinion or are we in
uniform agreement? Explain.
1. In essentials, UNITY . . .
4 (A) (B)
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of
5(C) 6
your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all
(D)
who is over all and through all and in all..” Ephesians 4:4-6
2. In non-essentials, LIBERTY . . .
1 (A) (B)
Now accept the one who is weak in faith, but not for the purpose of
passing judgment on his opinions.
4(A)
Who are you to judge the servant of another? To his own master he stands
or falls; and he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.
12 (A)
So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.
22
The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he
(A)
who does not condemn himself in what he approves. Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22
B. WHAT WE BELIEVE
5. Mankind
Originally created in the image and likeness of God, he fell into sin by disobedience –
which resulted in his spiritual and physical death. That man is universally and totally
sinful; That by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and what He has done, man will be justified
and receive the gift of eternal life, and become a child of God; That by the power of the
indwelling Holy Spirit, he can now live a holy and righteous life, which God requires.
6. Salvation
Salvation is a gift of God, by grace through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ not by any
human effort.
7. The Church
There is only one universal, invisible Church who is the Body and Bride of Christ,
composed of all believers from all walks of life.
The local, visible Church –is an assembly of believers of the Lord Jesus Christ, at a given
place under the Pastor and Elders. Any local Church is only a part of the One True
Church –the Body of the Lord Jesus Christ.
8. Ordinances
We believe the Lord has instituted and committed to the Church the observance of two
ordinances, the Water Baptism and the Lord’s Supper or Communion.
The purpose of our church is based on what Christ has commanded us to do:
Examples:
B. EVANGEIZE.
WE EXPRESS OUR LOVE FOR OTHERS BY SHARING THE GOSPEL/ GOOD
NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST TO THE LOST.
19 (A) (B) (C) (D)
" Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
20
name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that
(E) (F)
I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Romans 12:1-2
13 (A) 14
for " WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED." How
then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in
(B) (C)
Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?”
Romans 10:13-14
23
"And the master said to the slave, 'Go out into the highways and along
the hedges, and compel them to come in, so that my house may be filled.”
Luke 14:23
8 (A)
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and
(B)
you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
(C) (D)
Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth." Acts 1:8
19 (A) (B)
and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being
supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a
growth which is from God.” Colossians 2:19
C. EDIFY.
WE EXPRESS OUR LOVE FOR NEW BELIEVERS GROUNDING THEM IN THE FAITH,
TEACHING THEM THE BIBLICAL BELIEF AND BEHAVIOR UNTO CHRIST-LIKENESS.
18 (A) (B) (C)
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ To
Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18
41
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were
[a](A)
added about three thousand souls.” Acts 2:41
D. EQUIP.
WE EXPRESS OUR LOVE FOR OTHERS BY TRAINING THEM HOW TO SERVE AND
DISCIPLE OTHER PEOPLE.
2 (A) (B)
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses,
(C) (D) (E)
entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” 2 Timothy 2:2
11 (A) (B) (C)
And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists,
(D) 12(E)
and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of
(F) 13 (G)
service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of
(H) (I)
the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure
(J)
of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13
E. EMPOWER.
WE EXPRESS OUR LOVE TO OTHERS BY SENDING MATURE AND TRAINED
BELIEVERSTO THEIR GOD-GIVEN MISSION TO REACH OUT TO THE LOST IN VARIOUS
PARTS OF THE WORLD.
Matthew 28:19-20
10(S)
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good
(T) 11(U)
stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who
(V)
is speaking the utterances of God; whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving
(W) (X)
by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified
(Y)
through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever.
Amen.” 1Peter 4:10-11
Group discussion
1. Can you distinguish between essentials and non-essentials in our statement of faith?
What is the value of having UNITY among the ESSENTIALS and LIBERTY among the
NON-ESSENTIALS?
3. Recalling the 5Es you encountered in the lesson, can you state our
purpose statement?
4. Explain how we can accomplish each of the 5Es that comprise our
purpose statement.
5. Among the 5Es, which do you find most wanting in your life? How can you
enhance these areas as you become a member of JILGM?
Beliefs are not worth much unless they are translated into actions. Based on what the Bible
teaches, we feel very strongly about the following:
S-E-R-V-A-N-T-S
OUR VISION
We are God’s instrument in Evangelizing and Discipling Overseas
Filipino Workers, their families, and our communities.
OUR MISSION
To raise up Filipino workers (reaching, training, leading and

The D-12 is a strategy or a method of pursuing and accomplishing the vision of God, which is to
bring people out of the bondage of sin and darkness. The ‘D-12’ stands for ‘Disciples of 12’.
DISCIPLESHIP
Is the process of bringing people to Christ, grounding them in the faith towards maturity which
is Christlikeness for the purpose of spiritual multiplication for the glory of God.
Biblical Basis:
And the things which you have hear from me in the presence of many witnesses, these

GENERAL COMMUNITY
At JILGM, we recognize the need for a formal membership. In this light, we invite you
to commit to membership for the following reasons:
We live in an age where very few want to be committed to anything – a job, a marriage,
our country. This attitude has produced a generation of “church shoppers and hoppers”.
This is a selfish attitude that is counteracted when a person decides to make a
commitment.
Every team must have a roster. Every basketball team must have members. An
orchestra is a group of musicians. Every army is made up of soldiers. Even our
country requires citizenship. Membership identifies our family.
The New Testament places major emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable
to each other for spiritual growth. You cannot be accountable when you’re not
committed to any specific church family.
At JILGM we never ask our members to do more than what the Bible expects every
Christian to do. These responsibilities are spelled out in the Membership Covenant. The
expectations contained in this covenant are as follows:
… by KNOWING Him.
“18 (A) (B) (C)
but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ To
Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” 2Peter 3:18
… by LOVING Him.
“30(A)
AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL
YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'” Mark 12:30
… by OBEYING Him.
“(A)If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” John 14:15
… by REFUSING to gossip.
29 (A)
“ Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is
(B)
good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace
to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
17(A) (B)
“ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls
as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for
this would be unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17
“1 (A)
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be
2(B)
made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may
lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” 1 Timothy 2:1-2
… by ATTENDING trainings
“11
And He (A)gave (B)some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as
(C)
evangelists, and some as pastors and (D)teachers, 12(E)for the equipping of the saints
for the work of service, to the building up of (F)the body of Christ” Ephesians 4:11-12

Or, if by personal conviction, I can’t agree or give up my belief or position, I will respectfully
resign and withdraw my membership in JILGM so as not to disrupt the harmony and unity of
the Church.
In the above case, I will uphold the ROYAL LAW OF LOVE, respecting and understanding
differences of opinion, I will not try to influence other members’ opinion to take my side and
create division.

SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES
Session 1
The FOCUS of Class 102 is the DEVELOPMENT OF FOUR (4) BASIC HABITS that every Christian
needs to grow to spiritual maturity.
These series of classes will cover four (4) sessions and since these classes build up on
each other, it is important that you attend each and every session.
Session 1 will dwell on the biblical definition of SPIRITUAL MATURITY (Part 1) and HOW TO
GET A GRASP OF THE BIBLE (Part 2). While the next three sessions will touch on each of the
FOUR(4) BASIC HABITS per week, as listed hereunder:
With this in mind, we define Spiritual Maturity as CHRIST-LIKENESS or Becoming Like Christ.
Let us discuss some facts about Spiritual Maturity. Some of us may have heard or used the
term “spiritually mature” but do we really understand what that word means and what it
entails of us?
Spiritual Disciplines 1
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
FACTS ABOUT SPIRITUAL MATURITY:
Philip. 1:6
being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to
completion until the day of Christ Jesus. (NIV)
Focus on two key words in the verse: BEGAN and COMPLETE or PERFECT (if using the
NASB). What are these two words saying about the Christian life?
A: There is a beginning and there is an ending. It is a process.
2. It takes DISCIPLINE.
Most of the Spiritual Habits that we will be covering may be new to many. Therefore, they may
come as unnatural in the beginning. This is why you need DISCIPLINE.
1 Tim. 4:7,15
[7] But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other
hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;
Spiritual Disciplines 2
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
[15] Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident
to all. (NASB)
Is discipline pleasurable?
A: No. In verse 15, it even mentions the word, “pain”, when it talks about the discipline
involved in spiritual maturity.
In the Christian life, expect this. There will be things that will not come naturally at first maybe
because these are things that you have never done before or didn’t want to do in the past!
But there is good news! According to verse 15, what good fruit will result from your spiritual
discipline?
A: You can become an example and encouragement to others.
So ask yourself: In what areas of my life do I feel I need to practice more discipline? What
hinders me from being disciplined in these areas?
3. It entails CROSS-BEARING.
Luke 9:23
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take
up his cross daily and follow me.
Spiritual Disciplines 3
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
Spiritual maturity is not a hat that you wear on Sundays and leave inside the closet the rest of
the week. It is a way of life – of everyday life.
What is involved in “cross-bearing”? WHATEVER IT TAKES to make Christ first place in my life!
In everything, there is a price to pay. To become mature spiritually, there will be areas in your
life that you may have to give up to the Lord. Spiritual Maturity entails OBEDIENCE in all areas
of our life.
1 Cor. 10:31
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
According to this verse, in what area of our life should we glorify God? In all areas. In whatever
we do!.
From the food we eat, to the clothes we wear, to the words we say, we must make it a
point that we are obeying Christ and bringing Him glory.
Philip. 4:13
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
We tend to rely on ourselves and our strength to change and to mature. This will not work in
the Christian life. Remember, the Christian life is not DIFFICULT. It is IMPOSSIBLE! That is why
you need to depend on Christ every moment of every day.

Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
Ephes. 4:18
They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of
God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts.
According to these verses, what became a hindrance to the Gentiles when it came
to listening to the Word of God?
A: Hardening of hearts
THE CLOSED MIND: Are there still areas in your life right now which the Lord has
convicted you of and yet you have continued to harden your heart? Are you
practicing selective obedience – meaning you choose to obey Biblical commands that
you agree with or are comfortable with?
THE PREOCCUPIED MIND: Do you falter in studying the Word of God because you are
too busy? Do you just tend to insert study of God’s Word during your day? Is it a
priority? Is it the first thing that comes to your mind when you wake up in the morning?
A person who says that he is “too busy” to study the Word of God is also saying that
the Bible is not important enough that time should be invested in studying it. Work
your schedule around the Daily Time with The Lord, and not the other way around.
THE SUPERFICIAL MIND: Are you taking your Christian life seriously? Is it something you
really want to develop? If not, ask yourself why.
According to these verses, what happens when we don’t confess our sins to the Lord?
Spiritual Disciplines 6
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
Reflect on your life right now. Are you experiencing joy most of the time or only some of
the time? Could your lack of joy be a result of a sin that you have yet to confess to the
Lord?
Our sins rob us of the joy of the Christian life. When we sin, we are not only hurting God,
we are also hurting ourselves!
Deut. 6:6-9
"And these words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart; [7]
and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in
your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise
up. [8] "And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on
your forehead. [9] "And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on
your gates. (NASB)
A: Teach them to their children. Talk about it with them all the time. Bind them on their
hands and wear it. Write them on the doorposts of their houses and gates.
Writing notes down during worship services or during Bible studies will help us retain
very important information about the Word of God. Taking down notes is actually an
action that indicates that what is being said is important and vital. What is being said is
something that you want to go back later to. So don’t rely too much on your memory!
Get a nice notebook and pen today and start taking down notes.
Deut. 17:19
It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to
revere the Lord his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees
Spiritual Disciplines 7
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
Why should you read the Bible daily, and not just weekly or monthly? Our spirit needs daily
feeding.
If I read approximately 15 minutes a day, I can read through the entire Bible once a year.
Acts 17:11
Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received
the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul
said was true. (NASB)
According to this verse, what should we do apart from reading the Bible?
A: We should examine it or study it.
How can we apply this in our own life? When listening to a speaker, don’t just take his word for
it, study the Bible and see for yourself if what he is saying is true! By examining the Bible, you
will see the truth of God’s Word for yourself! Experiencing the truths of the Word of God is
what makes it life-changing.
Reading the Bible is not enough because it is not just another novel or another storybook. It
contains truths about life that are necessary for us to understand.
1. Ask QUESTIONS.
2. Use Resources for your Bible Study.
3. Get a notebook and a pen so you can take down notes.

4. How to MEMORIZE God’s Word
Psalm 119:11
I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:105
Your word is a lamp to my
feet and a light for my path.
Psalm 119:28
My soul is weary with sorrow;
strengthen me according to your word.
Psalm 119:50
My comfort in my suffering is this:
Your promise preserves my life.
1 Peter 3:15
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to
everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this
with gentleness and respect.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing
of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing
and perfect will. (NASB)
2 Cor. 3:18
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed
into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the
Spirit. (NIV)
To connect Romans 12:2 and 2 Cor. 3:18: It is only when we have started to renew our minds that
our actions and attitudes will begin to be transformed and become like Christ. You cannot
genuinely change your actions and attitudes if you don’t start with the renewal of your mind.
Joshua 1:8
"This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day
and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you
will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
The Word of God is practical. It may have been written thousands of years ago but the truths
contained in it are relevant and applicable to our issues and situations today.
John 15:7
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it shall be
done for you.
When we meditate on the Word of God, we begin to get into the heart of God. And this is
reflected even in our prayers. We pray not merely for what we want, but for what God wants
for us.
End in prayer. This helps us to summarize our time with the Lord and makes us realize how
we can come closer to God, our Father.

Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
6. How to APPLY God’s Word.
James 1:22
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
According to this passage, what do we do when we don’t apply the Word of God? A: We
deceive ourselves.
A: When we listen to something, we acknowledge that what is being said deserves our
attention; that it is something significant and true. Therefore, if we don’t follow through with
obedience, it means that we did not really believe in what we were listening to in the first
place.
When reading a passage, figure out how you can apply it in your life. Most applications
will focus on one or more of the three (3) relationships:
a. With God
b. With myself
c. With other people
a. It is PERSONAL
b. It is PRACTICAL
c. It is POSSIBLE
d. It is PROBABLE
Here is an example:
Mark 9:43-47
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two
hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. [44]*[45] And if your foot causes you to
sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into
hell. [46] * [47] And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the
kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell,
We definitely cannot take this passage literally! What PERSONAL, PRACTICAL, POSSIBLE and
PROBABLE application can you think of?
Spiritual Disciplines 11
Session 1 – Leader’s Guide
ASSIGNMENT
1. MEDITATION. Get hold of a journal within the week. Agree to meditate on a passage of
Scripture and be ready to share your thoughts and insights on your next meeting. We
suggest a passage that everyone is familiar with: Psalm 23 (hopefully, after you meditate on
the verse, you will realize that although this Psalm is already so familiar, meditation will
help you gain more insights than when you first encountered it)
2. MEMORIZATION. Go through Psalm 23 and memorize a verse or two of the Psalm over the
week. Write down a PERSONAL, PRACTICAL, POSSIBLE and PROBABLE application of the
verse. You will recite the verse next meeting and share the applications that you could
come up with.
3. STUDYING THE BIBLE. Research on some details in Psalm 23. For example, what does
“anointing the head with oil” mean? Why is this significant? Why does the “rod and staff”
comfort the Psalmist? What can you find out about shepherds during David’s time? Share
what you discovered in your research during the next meeting.
4. TAKING DOWN NOTES. Take down notes on the next Sunday message or tune in to a
Christian radio station and take down notes on one of the messages given by one of the
pastors. You can also take down notes from Sunday messages in television or from videos
of the CCF messages which you can view from the CCF Website (www.ccf.org.ph) Share
your notes on your next meeting.
5. APPLICATION: This assignment is for everyone. Try to apply what you have meditated on,
memorized or studied or taken down notes on. Share with the group how you did it.

Appendix 1
Guidelines to help you develop a daily habit of reading the Word of God
1. Read the Bible systematically. You may follow a reading plan or use a devotional.
2. Follow a daily Bible reading plan and stick to it. This way you don’t have to be at a loss
everyday as to which passage you should be reading. If you happen to miss a day, just
pick up from where you left off.
3. Read different translations – Different translations will give you a clearer perspective of
the verse.
4. Read it aloud – this improves concentration
5. Underline or highlight key verses – this will make it easier for you to find these verses
when you need to refer to them later on.

Appendix 3
There are six things you can do to help you meditate on a verse:
1. PICTURE IT – Picture the scenes described in the passage. You can even draw the scene
if you want.
2. PRONOUNCE IT – Say the verses aloud; you may emphasize a different word every time
you say the verses.
3. PARAPHRASE IT – Rewrite the verses in your own words.
4. PERSONALIZE IT – Replace certain words in the verses with names or phrases that
concern you personally.
5. PRAY IT – You can turn the verse into a prayer and pray it back to God.
6. PROBE IT – Use the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. Method
a. SIN to confess
b. PROMISE to claim
c. ERROR to avoid or EXAMPLE to follow
d. COMMAND to obey
e. INSIGHT on God – What can you learn about God?
f. ATTITUDE to change
g. LINE to memorize or apply

The Habit of a Daily Time with God
Objectives
- To teach the importance and purpose of having a daily time with God
- To give practical steps on how to start developing a habit of personal time with God
- To pinpoint possible distractions to quiet time and how to overcome them
What do we call this undivided time with the Lord? Quiet Time
According to our definition, how often do we need to practice our quiet time? Daily
Why is Quiet Time so important that we need to do it on a daily (or regular) basis?
Let us look at some verses that will help us understand the importance of Quiet Time and
why we need it on a daily basis.
Mark 1:35
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and
went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Matthew 4:4
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every
word that comes from the mouth of God.'"
According to this verse, what do we need in order to live out the Christian life? We need
every word that comes from the mouth God.
1 Cor. 1:9
God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful.
1
Spiritual Disciplines
Session 2 – Leader’s Guide
And finally, according to this verse, what has God called us to do?
To be in fellowship with His Son Jesus Christ.
Of what use is a personal daily quiet time with the Lord? Will it make any significant change
in our life? Let us look at the purpose of a daily quiet time with the Lord.
Psalm 29:2
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
According to this verse, what can we use our quiet time for?
Giving devotion to God.
Psalm 25:4
Show me your ways, O
Lord, teach me your paths;
What is another use for quiet time? Getting direction from God.
Psalm 37:4
Delight yourself in the Lord
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
The objective of your quiet time is not merely to study about Christ, but to actually
spend time with Him.
2 Peter 1:3-4
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our
knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. [4] Through these
he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may
participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by
evil desires.
According to these verses, why did God give us His great and precious
promises? So that through these promises, we may participate in the divine
nature and escape the corruption of the world.

Session 2 – Leader’s Guide
To grow and become like God in character .
How will we know what these promises are which will help us develop God’s
character in our lives? Through quiet time.
When you are about to do something very important, when do you plan this important
event? When you are at your best.
Here are some reasons why it would be wise to consider an early morning quiet time:
a. The example of Biblical Characters: Abraham, Moses, Jacob, Hannah, Job, Hezekiah,
David, Daniel and Jesus all chose to do it in the morning!
b. It is logical to begin the day with it: The best time to tune your instrument is before the
concert and not after!
c. Meeting with God first thing in the morning demonstrates that God is your first priority
and so you want to give Him the first part of your day!
d. In the morning, you are most likely to be rested, your mind is less cluttered, and it
is often the quietest time of your day!
Mark 1:35
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off
to a solitary place, where he prayed.
According to this verse, where did Jesus go for His quiet time?
A solitary place.
When you are meeting with someone important, the venue of the meeting is very
important. It can strongly affect how the meeting will go. The same goes with your quiet

time. The place you choose is very important because it will strongly affect how your quiet
time will go.
What are some of the resources you need based on our previous studies?
Psalm 46:10
"Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations, I
will be exalted in the earth."
THE ATTITUDE OF REVERENCE : Be aware that you are meeting with the most important
person in the universe!
Psalm 119:18
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
THE ATTITUDE OF EXPECTANCY : Expect that the Lord will be speaking to you during this
time with Him.
John 7:17
If anyone chooses to do God's will, he will find out whether my teaching comes
from God or whether I speak on my own.
THE ATTITUDE OF OBEDIENCE : Have an openness of heart and a desire to obey God and
follow His will.

5. Follow a SIMPLE PLAN.
“Fifteen Minutes with God”
(A Plan to Get You Started)
RELAX (1 minute)
Be still and quiet. Slow down and prepare your heart. Take a few deep breaths and wait
on God.
READ (4 minutes)
See the section on “How to Read God’s Word”
Begin reading where you left off the day before. Read until you feel God has told you
something. Then stop and think about it.
REFLECT (4 minutes)
See the section on “How To Meditate on God’s Word”
You may use the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. method or any of the six methods of meditation.
Think about what the passage can apply to your life. Write down your thoughts.
Memorizing verses that speak to you is also part of reflection (see the section on “How to
Memorize God’s Word”)
RECORD (2 minutes)
See the section on “How To Apply God’s Word”
Write out a personal application statement that is practical, possible and measurable.
PRAYER (4 minutes)
See the section on “The Habit of Prayer.” Conclude your quiet time by talking to God
about what He has shown you and making your request from your prayer list.
What do you foresee as possible hindrances to developing a regular Quiet Time? We will
discuss four possible problems that you may encounter with regard to your quiet time.
Most of the problems lie within the “Battle of the Blankets” – Do you actually
make it out of bed for quiet time? Here are some suggestions on how to battle
such problems:
a. Go to bed on time.
b. Get up immediately.
c. Be aware of quiet time robbers or distractions.
d. Fall asleep thinking about God.

2. The Problem of DISTRACTION.
Satan will try to use anything to get your mind to wander during quiet time. Here
are some helpful tips to battle such distractions.
You may feel that you are not getting anything out of your quiet time. How do we solve
this problem?
Never judge your quiet time using your FEELINGS. Instead, think through possible
reasons for your spiritual dryness:
The greatest problem in developing this habit is the struggle to stay consistent. Here are
some suggestions on how to be consistent in your quiet time:
6
Spiritual Disciplines
Session 2 – Leader’s Guide
When will it become a habit?
It takes THREE WEEKS for one to become familiar with a new task. Then it takes another THREE
WEEKS for it to become a comfortable habit.
Galatians 6:9
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we
do not give up.
A PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Father, I realize that I was created to have fellowship with you. Thank you for making this
privilege possible through Jesus’ death. I know that daily fellowship with You is to be the
most important thing in my life. I now want to commit myself to spending at least a few
minutes everyday with You in quiet time of Bible reading and prayer. I’m trusting in your
strength to help me become consistent. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
APPLICATION
1. Write down problems you have with your quiet time. Beside it, write down a concrete
action which you can do this week to eliminate this problem. Share what happened to
group next week.
2. For beginners, use our 15 minute quiet time guide this week. Jot down your insights
from your time with the Lord and be prepared to share some of these during the next
meeting.
For those who already have their own quiet time routine, do something different this week.
Change the venue, change the routine, add some singing or write a short poem; share with the
group how you made your quiet time this week more exciting. Share with the group what
worked and what didn’t.

Matthew 6:6
But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who
is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Why did Jesus say that we should practice this? Let’s look at the next verse and find out why.
Matthew 6:7-8
[7] And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be
heard because of their many words. [8] Do not be like them, for your Father knows
what you need before you ask him.
According to this verse, what does Jesus tell us about how we should pray?
We should be honest with the Lord. When we pray, we don’t need to use difficult and
complicated words for God already knows what you will pray for even before you ask for it. The
complex words that you choose will not make much of a difference.
In connection with the previous verse (verse 6), how can praying in a room and in
secret encourage us to be honest in our prayers?
It will lessen the pressure or the temptation to impress others when praying, the tendency to
use unnecessary words, the privacy will help us be truthful and less conscious about what
others may think.

HOW TO PRAY: THE SIX PARTS OF PRAYER
Next, let us discuss HOW TO PRAY. The disciples had the same question when they asked Jesus
to teach them how to pray. Jesus responded with the following prayer in Matthew 6:9-15. Let’s
study this prayer and find how we can apply this in our own prayer time.
Matthew 6:9-13
"This, then, is how you should pray:
Matthew 6:9
"This, then, is how you should pray:
Here are some things you can do to help you remember what to praise God for:
a. As you read your Bible, make a list of God’s character qualities that you
discover and then review them when you pray. (See Prayer Guide # 1)
For example, let’s look at Numbers 14:18. What qualities of God can you
see in this verse?
Numbers 14:18
'The Lord is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and
rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the
children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.'
b. Remind yourself and affirm the promises God has made that are contained in
the meaning of His names.(See Prayer Guide # 2)
c. Make a list of all that you are thankful for and review them when you pray.

test me and know my anxious thoughts.
[24] See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting.
According to this verse, what is the first thing that we need to ask from God when asking
for forgiveness? We ask the Holy Spirit to reveal every sin.
The Holy Spirit will help bring to mind sins that you may have forgotten or sins that you
have not yet willingly repented of.
Proverbs 28:13
He who conceals his sins does not prosper,
but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.
Once the Holy Spirit has brought to mind these sins, what then must you do? Confess
and renounce each sin specifically.
What does it mean to confess your sin? Admit that you are personally responsible for
this sin, and that you are at fault. Admit that the action that you did was wrong. Do not
make any excuses.
What does it mean to renounce your sin? To renounce means to give it up, to turn your
back, to repent. To renounce your sin means telling God that you are willing to do
everything that needs to be done so that you will not commit the same sin again.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify
us from all unrighteousness.
Some people find it hard to believe that God has forgiven them of their sin despite their
sincere repentance. Whenever you have doubts, go back to God’s Word and claim this
promise in 1 John 1:9, and by faith, thank God for His forgiveness and mercy. Do not
allow yourself to be tied down by your sins which have been forgiven by God.
Matthew 5:23-24
"Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your
brother has something against you, [24] leave your gift there in front of the altar.
First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift.
Spiritual Disciplines 4
Session 3 – Leader’s Guide
If the Holy Spirit reminds us of a sin that we have made against a sister or brother, what
has been commanded of us to do? We need to make restitution to others when
necessary.
Matthew 6:12b
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Next, we need to take time to pray for other people. If you want to know how to
pray for others, you can look at the example of Paul in the following verses:
You can also make a list of people you want to pray for. You can schedule them
on different days of the week.
(See Prayer Guide # 5)
Matthew 6:13
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.'
According to this verse, what are we commanded to pray for? Protection from the evil
one and from temptation.
Believers face a spiritual battle everyday. Satan wants to defeat us through temptation
and fear. By praying for protection, we will have confidence to face every situation
throughout our day.
1 John 4:4
You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is
in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
According to this verse, why is there no need to fear the evil one? If we are in Christ,
we need not fear the evil one because He who is in us is greater than he who is in the
world.

APPLICATION/HOMEWORK:
Use the SIX PARTS OF PRAYER as a theme for each day of your week. An example would
look like this:
Day 1: PRAISE – Let the theme of your prayers for the day be thanksgiving for who the
Lord is and what He has done for you. When you have idle time during your day, take
time to thank Him or praise Him for something. At the end of the day, write down in
your journal five things that you thank God for.
Day 2: PURPOSE – Commit to the Lord whatever you do for that day. Whether it be
talking to a friend or a client or your boss; whether it be washing your clothes, walking
to work, buying food, or going to class. Say a short prayer and ask the Lord to guide
you and help you see His purpose for your being there at that time.
Day 3: PROVISION – Lift up to God areas in your life where you need Him to provide,
not just materially or physically but emotionally and spiritually as well. Trust God that
He will provide for your needs. Take time to be a blessing to others. Do you see a
need that should be addressed in work or in your school? Think of a way you could be
used by God to address that need.
Day 4: PARDON – Think through your life and see if there are still people in your life
whom you have yet to forgive. Lift up the painful experience and the person involved
and choose to forgive. And if you are the one who needs to ask for forgiveness, don’t
delay. Do it today or at least plan to make amends soon and start praying for the
person you have wronged. Let forgiveness be your theme for the day. If someone
does wrong to you, choose to forgive instead of getting even. And take a few seconds
to pray for that person.
Day 5: PEOPLE TO PRAY FOR – Ask people at home, in school or at work for prayer
requests and commit to pray for them. You can schedule a person for each hour or
every other hour.
Day 6: PROTECTION – As you go from one place to another, be aware of your
surroundings and pray for each place you step your foot into. What kind of protection
do people who are in this place need? Pray for the salvation of people in that place
and spiritual protection for each of them.

Lesson Proper
The key Biblical words that are translated as ‘worship’ are the following:
Shachah (Shahah)- from the OT means “depress,” “bow down,” “prostrate”, as in
Exodus 4:31 (‘bowed their heads and worshipped”).
Proskuneo (pros-koo-neh-o)– in the NT meaning to kiss, like a dog licking his master's
hand; i.e. (literal or figurative) prostrate oneself in homage (do reverence to, adore) :-
“prostrate”, “fall down”.
The Old and New Testament idea of worship is the REVERENTIAL attitude of mind or body or
both, combined with the general ceremonial and religious SERVICE of God, the feeling of awe,
veneration, adoration, and obedience.

as the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the
Almighty, reigns. Revelation 19:6

9. He is SOVEREIGN
9
"Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and
10
there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things
which have not been done, saying, 'My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all
My good pleasure'. Isaiah 46:9-10
There are certain forms or worship that are not acceptable to God. These include –
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will
hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Matthew 6:24
When they go to church and exalt themselves in their actions and in their speech. This
is a temptation open to preachers and those who give testimonies in public.
When they attend Christian gatherings and discuss or transact their business
there. Some Christians involved in secular business are guilty of this.
When they pray like the Pharisee in Luke 18:9-14, exalting themselves by thinking that
they are righteous because they use other people as their standard of righteousness.
When they participate in Christian activities (Lord’s Supper, Bible Study, mission
work, church choir, etc.) without turning away from their sins like adultery,
immorality, bitterness, lust, greed, materialism, envy, and selfishness.
When they go through the motion of worship (singing or praying) but the heart does not
connect with God or our mind is drifting or thinking of something else.
2. Worshipping God in one’s WAY.
3 4
“…As they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations, so I
will choose their punishments, and I will bring on them what they dread. Because I called, but
no one answered; I spoke, but they did not listen. And they did evil in My sight, and chose that
in which I did not delight." Isaiah 66:3-4

3. Worshipping God through PHYSICAL representations.
And he took this from their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it into a
molten calf; and they said, "This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land
of Egypt." Exodus 32:4
The Bible identifies certain aspects of worship which make it acceptable to God.
To worship God also means keeping our body PURE and presenting it to GOD pure. That is to
say, it is abstaining from sexual immorality, making one’s physical self available for God’s use,
and also presenting one’s body decently to God. This is just a restatement of worshipping God
is truth.
The full significance of the passage is that we worship God by giving Him our whole being.
What does this mean? In the context of corporate worship and in practical terms, let me
enumerate three things that we give to God.
And they came into the house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they
fell down and worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him
gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:11
Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing…Enter His gates
with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name.
Psalm 100:2,4

c. Worshipping God by giving Him our PROMISES.
1
Now on the twenty-fourth day of this month the sons of Israel assembled with
2
fasting, in sackcloth, and with dirt upon them. And the descendants of Israel
separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins and the
3
iniquities of their fathers. While they stood in their place, they read from the book of
the law of the Lord their God for a fourth of the day; and for another fourth they
confessed and worshiped the Lord their God. Nehemiah 9:1-3
CONCLUSION:
1. What practices or sins may be hindering you from truly worshipping God?
2. Do you prepare your heart prior to corporate worship?
3. Is your worship based on the Bible or on religious traditions?
“You are a member of God’s very own family… and you belong in God’s household with
every other Christian.” Ephesians 2:19 (LB)
“The Christian who is not committed to a group of other believers for praying, sharing, and
serving, so that he is known, as he knows others, is not an obedient Christian. He is not in the
will of God. However vocal he may be in his theology, he is not obeying the Lord.” Dr. Ray
Ortland
“Two are better off than one… If one of them falls down, the other can help him up. But if
someone is alone and falls, it’s just too bad, because there is no one to help him… Two men can
resist an attack that would defeat one man alone. A rope made of three cords is hard to break.”

5. MUTUAL SUPPORT
“…they gave to anyone as he had a need…”
6. ENCOURAGEMENT
“In response to all He has done for us, let us outdo each other in being helpful and kind
to each other and in doing good. Let us not neglect our church meetings, as some
people do, but encourage and warn each other, especially now that the day of His
coming back again is drawing near” Hebrews 10:24-25
7. TRAIN/EQUIPPING
“ Some of us have been given special ability as apostles; to others He has given the gift
of being able to preach well; some have special ability in winning people to Christ,
helping them to trust Him as their Savior; still others have a gift for caring for God’s
people as a shepherd does his sheep, leading and teaching them in the ways of God.
Why is it that He gives us these special abilities to do certain things best? It is that
God’s people will be equipped to do better work for Him, building up the Church, the
body of Christ, to a position of strength and maturity;” Eph. 4:11-12 (LB)

Have you come to a point in your life that you are sure you have eternal
life?
Did you know that you can be sure according to the Bible?
Could I share with you on how to be sure you have eternal life?
Could I share this booklet on “God‟s Way to Heaven?” It contains verses
from the Catholic Bible.
Then say, “That is interesting. Would you like to know what the Bible says
about how to have eternal life?”
Set # 2:
There are 3 possible reasons why the respondent does not want to
receive Christ:
Being a bold witness for Jesus is consistent with the way of life for
the early Christians. They took the initiative.
2. Do not try to change all their wrong ideas at once. They must first
receive Jesus Christ.
3. Do not be sidetracked.
WHAT TO DO:
3. If question is off topic or will take you off the topic, politely say
“That‟s a good question, but let‟s deal with that question later.
5. Ideally, you should try to answer the question by getting the person
to read a verse from the Bible.
6. If you are not sure of your answer, do not be afraid to say “I don‟t
know for sure, but let me get back to you on that.”
7. Do not panic or get mad when people ask questions. Don‟t feel like
they are attacking you and you have to defend Jesus. Don‟t be a
lawyer for Jesus, be a witness.

STUDIES ON THE HOLY SPIRIT
LESSON 1: “WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?”
INTRODUCTION:
In this series of lessons we will study some fundamental truths from the Bible that aim to give
a right perspective of the Holy Spirit and emphasize His vital role in the life of every believer.
LESSON 1:
“WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?”
STUDY OUTLINE:
I. What the Holy Spirit IS NOT?
II. What the Holy Spirit IS?
III. What the Holy Spirit DOES?
INTRODUCTION:
What is the meaning of the word “relationship?” What picture comes to your mind when you
talk about it? The word conveys the idea of “connection” (as in “How are people connected?”).
How does this understanding of the word, makes clear the Holy Spirit’s relationship with
believers?
LESSON 2:
“THE HOLY SPIRIT’S RELATIONSHIP WITH BELIEVERS”
STUDY OUTLINE:
I. He Indwells Believers
II. He Seals Believers
III. He Baptizes Believers Into the Body of Christ
IV. He Leads Believers
V. He Comes Alongside Believers
First of all, the Holy Spirit has an inward relationship with believers.
I. HE INDWELLS BELIEVERS.
Read 1 Corinthians 6:18-20. How should the fact that the Holy Spirit resides in our
bodies affect the way we use our bodies? What are some ways by which believers
can misuse (or abuse) the temple of the Spirit?
Read Romans 8:9-11. What condition (preceded by the word “if”) is repeated 4
times in this passage? “if the Spirit of Christ is in you”. What are the results if that
“condition” is present?
o You are controlled by the Spirit, not by the sinful nature;
o You belong to Christ;
o Your body is now dead to sin;
o He will give life (God’s life) to your bodies.
According to the above verses, can there be Christians who are NOT indwelt by the
Holy Spirit? NO
There is also a relationship with the Holy Spirit in which He unites believers into one body. He
cements or connects believers to each other through Himself…
TEMPLE OF GOD
HOLY
SPIRIT
JESUS
APOSTLES & PROPHETS
Based on the above shouldn’t we conclude that every believer is baptized by the
Holy Spirit?
There is also a side-by-side relationship between the Spirit and the believer…
V. HE COMES ALONGSIDE BELIEVERS.
Read John 14:16-17. What do you think is the meaning of “Helper?”
The original word for “Helper” is the Greek word “parakletos.” This
word comes from two root words: ‘para’ (beside) and ‘kaleo’ (a
verb meaning ‘to call’). Thus, the literal meaning of the word
“Helper” is “the One called to be beside” or the One called to come
alongside believers.”
APPLICATION:
Since every Christian is baptized by the Holy Spirit into the body of Christ (the
Church), where the same Spirit of Unity is constantly at work in the church,
what steps can we take to cooperate with Him in this work of His?
In the light of the fact that the Holy Spirit is the One whom we can call to
when we are in trouble, or when we need any kind of help, what “help” do
you need from the Holy Spirit who is just more than willing to come to our
side?
How does this ministry of the Holy Spirit demonstrate God’s great love and
concern for His children?
INTRODUCTION:
In our previous study we learned the relationship of the Holy Spirit to the believer. We said that
the Holy Spirit INDWELLS, SEALS, BAPTIZES, LEADS and COMES ALONGSIDE a believer.
We also concluded that EVERY believer is Indwelt, Sealed and Baptized by the Holy Spirit. And
we also concluded that the Holy Spirit “helps” a Christian every time he or she would call upon
Him. However, is it also true that EVERY Christian is always LED by the Holy Spirit?
In our study today and for the next session we will know the secret on how to be always led and
empowered by Him.
LESSON 3:
“THE FILLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”
STUDY OUTLINE:
I. Wrong Ideas about “Filling”
II. What is the “Filling of the Spirit?”
III. How to Be “Filled”
SPIRITUAL MAN
s s
s
NATURAL MAN CARNAL MAN
Based on the discussion above, which circle best represents your life?
B. The Filling of the Spirit can also be explained by how much of us are controlled by
the Spirit. The “Filling of” something (or “Being filled with” something) is a
prepositional phrase which would mean any or all of the following:
APPLICATION:
Is there any area of your life which is not fully controlled by God’s Spirit?
(Ambition, plans, relationship, career, business, recreation, etc.)
How will you apply Spiritual Breathing in your family life? Work? While
Driving? Leisure Time?
INTRODUCTION:
[In our previous study we took up the lesson on The Filling of the Holy Spirit. We first considered some
of the wrong ideas about the filling. We evaluated each of them from the point of view of the scriptures
and saw that they are unscriptural.
We also looked at the Bible to see what it actually says about The Filling of the Holy Spirit and
concluded the section by saying that is a moment by moment submission of the believer to God and
that it is not an option or suggestion but a command for every believer to obey.
Finally we learned how a Christian can be filled with the Holy Spirit. We likened the process to Inhaling
and Exhaling, or Spiritual Breathing. In exhaling, we confess any known sin; in inhaling we ask God to
once again fill us with His Spirit.]
LESSON 4:
“THE FRUITS & THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT”
STUDY OUTLINE:
I. The Differences Between Fruits & Gifts
II. Spiritual Gifts
III. Fruit of the Spirit
Read Romans 12:6-8; 1 Corinthians 12:6-11, 28-31; 1 Peter 4:11 and Ephesians 4:11. Try
to point out the gifts listed in those passages. As you do try to mention specific persons in
the church, may be even in our small group, who manifest giftedness in each of the items
mentioned. (Refer to appendix for a definition of the gifts)
C. Ten Basic Truths About Gifts (1 Corinthians 12-13)
Read 1 Corinthians 12:1. What does the verse imply? [That there are Christians who are
ignorant about spiritual gifts]
Therefore, we need to know what basic truths God, through the Apostle Paul, wants us to
know about gifts:
1. Read 12:3 where Paul refers to a speaker or preacher who say “Jesus is accursed”
and another who say “Jesus is Lord.” Paul’s point is: Only believers have spiritual gifts
(or only believers are enabled by the Holy Spirit to preach the truth about Jesus).
2. Read 12:7. Every Christian has at least one gift. What do you think is your spiritual
gift?
3. Same verse & 1 Peter 4:10. They are to be used for the common good.
4. Read 12:11. The Holy Spirit decides what gifts I get.
5. Read 12:21-23. Each gift is important in the body.
6. Read 12:28. No one receives all the gifts.
7. Read 12:29-30. No single gift is given to everyone.
8. Read 13:1-3. Lack of love renders a gift ineffective. Why do you think this is so?
9. Read 1 Corinthians 4:2: We are required to be faithful in using our gifts. (Also read 1
Timothy 4:14)
10. Read Ephesians 4:11-16. Using my gift will cause me and the church to grow.
2. Experiment. Volunteer and serve in the D-group. Try doing different things and see
where the Holy Spirit will bless your work. He will confirm it through other people.
3. Examine Your Heart. Which one do you enjoy doing most?
C. How to Be Fruitful
1. Read John 15:4-5. Abide in the Vine.
2. Read Galatians 5:16-23. Walk in the Spirit. What are the possible results if one walks by
the flesh instead? The deeds of the flesh in verses 19-21. (Note: In v. 21, “those who
practice” is present participle, which literally translates as “those who continue to
practice”)
3. Read John 15:1-5. Chastening or Pruning by the Father. (Note: “Takes away” in v. 2
literally means “take up” (Gk. ‘ ’). A branch that sags to the ground cannot bear fruit
so the vinedresser lifts it up to a latticework and ties it there).
What is the difference between ‘chastening’ and ‘pruning’? Chastening happens
when a believer is clearly living in sin; pruning happens when there is no
unconfessed sin and yet the believer experiences an illness, or financial
problems or other forms of difficulties to further improve his character.
Also read Hebrews 12:11.
APPLICATION:
What fruit, do you feel, is the Lord developing in your life at the moment? What
method is the Lord employing in your life for you to yield His desired spiritual fruit?
(Refer to III-C above) What is your part in fruit-bearing? Be specific.
Can a person manifest the fruit of the Spirit without knowing and practicing his
spiritual gift? Explain. Or vice versa, can one use his gift without spiritual fruit?
Explain. How should one manage his own “Knowing” (cognitive knowledge of God’s
Word), “Doing” (using one’s gifts) , and “Being” (character) in order to really grow in
the Lord?
This gift caused such a problem in the Corinthian church. Paul had to write an entire chapter (1 Cor. 14) of
guidelines. In this chapter Paul encourages us to seek the other gifts and not to focus on this gift.
1. It is for personal edification, not for the whole church.
“He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who preaches edifies the church.”
Love: that kind of compassion which wants only the best for another person, regardless of his actions toward you.
Joy: the kind of joy whose foundation is in God and not in the circumstances found in our daily lives.
Peace: the serenity of knowing God is in control, that one is in His hands, and He will work out everything for the
highest good.
Patience: long-suffering or forbearance with other people, even when they don’t deserve it.
Kindness: graciousness, being helpful and considerate, not expecting anything in return.
Goodness: moral virtue which is willing to act for the good of other people.
Self-control: the ability to control one’s actions rather than being controlled by one’s emotions or desires.

OUR MISSION
To raise up Filipino workers (reaching, training, leading and

communities and nations,
OUR STRATEGY

A –BUTIN (reach)
S –ANAYIN (train)

P –AHAYUIN (send)

“30(A)
AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL
YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'” Mark 12:30

“ Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls

Leader’s Guide – Galatians 1 1
I. Introduction
Christianity is the statement which if false is of no importance. If true, it is of infinite importance. The
one thing it cannot be is moderately important
-C.S. Lewis
Today in universities..States..the Philippines, they are teaching people that there is..
...NO such thing as ABSOLUTE TRUTH...Everything is relative..
II. The Defense of Paul’s Authority and the Distortion of the Gospel
Galatians 1:1-4
Paul, an apostle (not sent from men, nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ, and
God the Father, who raised Him from the dead), [2] and all the brethren who are with me, to the
churches of Galatia: [3] Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ, [4]
who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us out of this present evil age, according to the
will of our God and Father,
Galatians 1:4
who gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us out of this present evil age,
according to the will of our God and Father,
2. Jesus came not only to..
..die for our sins
..but He also came to SAVE us from the power of sin
Galatians 1:6
I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a
different gospel;
Galatians 1:7
which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you, and want to
distort the gospel of Christ.
If the Gospel was distorted in the time of the apostle Paul...how much more today? Is the Gospel distorted?
Galatians 1:8
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 1 3
But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to
that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed.
Galatians 1:9
As we have said before, so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary
to that which you received, let him be accursed.
1 Cor. 15:1-4
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in
which also you stand, [2] by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to
you, unless you believed in vain. [3] For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received,
that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, [4] and that He was buried, and that He was
raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
Galatians 1:11-12
For I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to
man. [12] For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of
Jesus Christ.
1. Paul’s commission,
a. It (the Gospel) was not given to me by men
b. It was given..by direct revelation of Jesus Christ
Galatians 1:13
For you have heard of my former manner of life in Judaism, how I used to persecute the
church of God beyond measure, and tried to destroy it;
Galatians 1:14
and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my
countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions.
b. Paul was being promoted (for persecuting Christians)
Galatians 1:15
But when He who had set me apart, even from my mother's womb, and called me through
His grace, was pleased
At the right time, God said...its time to CHANGE!
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
Discussion Questions:
1. What is the Gospel?
3. Have you tried changing a bad habit out of self effort? What happened?
1.He (Paul) went to the LEADERSHIP and explained to them the gospel he was preaching to see if it’s
correct or not
Acts 15:1
And some men came down from Judea and began teaching the brethren, "Unless you are
circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved."
Acts 15:5
But certain ones of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, stood up, saying, "It is
necessary to circumcise them, and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses."
Acts 15:2
And when Paul and Barnabas had great dissension and debate with them, the brethren determined
that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and elders
concerning this issue.
Is it by,
a. Faith (in Jesus) alone + 0 (nothing) = salvation
OR
b. Faith (in Jesus) + something else = salvation
Acts 15:5
But certain ones of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed, stood up, saying, "It is
necessary to circumcise them, and to direct them to observe the Law of Moses.
Acts 15:6
And the apostles and the elders came together to look into this matter.
2. The apostles and elders came together to look into this matter (the true gospel)
Acts 15:7-8
And after there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, "Brethren, you
know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles
should hear the word of the gospel and believe. [8] "And God, who knows the heart, bore
witness to them, giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us;
Acts 15:10
"Now therefore why do you put God to the test by placing upon the neck of the disciples a
yoke which neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?
Peter is saying, why do you want them to go back to legalism
Acts 15:11
"But we believe that we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, in the same way as
they also are."
GRACE is undeserved favor
The Problem in the Book of Galatians was people (false teachers) were teaching the second formula (the wrong
formula)!
Discussion Questions:
1. What modern day practices do people rely on for salvation?
2. What is the true gospel?
Galatians 2:4
But it was because of the false brethren who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in
Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage.
The Issues...
a. Bondage vs. Freedom in Christ
: True Liberty (Freedom) is the ABILITY to say NO to sin and YES to God’s will
: I am free to do what I want to do no matter what (this is not biblical Freedom)
Galatians 2:5
But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel
might remain with you.
: Compromise for the sake of harmony is acceptable when it does not deal with truth and doctrine
Galatians 2:6
But from those who were of high reputation (what they were makes no difference to me;
God shows no partiality)-- well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me.
Conclusion..
A. Paul’s authority recognized
B. The gospel affirmed
C. Only one gospel to all
D. Paul was assigned different ministries
Galatians 2:10
They only asked us to remember the poor-- the very thing I also was eager to do.
E. Now that you are saved, you need to have good works.
Discussion Questions:
1.As Christians living in a fallen world, we sometimes have to compromise on a lot of matters. What areas in
your life do you compromise?
2. What specific steps can you take to avoid compromise?
3. What is the danger in,
a. compromising the truth of God’s Word?
b. justifying our personal preferences in spite of clear biblical teaching?
c. being popular rather than biblical?*
*optional question, as time allows.
Because,
a. Peter began to WITHDRAW and hold himself aloof
Galatians 2:13
And the rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even
Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.
c. When a leader (Peter) does something that is not right, the tendency of people is to—-follow
the leader
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 2 5
Galatians 2:14
But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I
said to Cephas in the presence of all, "If you, being a Jew, live like the Gentiles and not
like the Jews, how is it that you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?
2. The mistake of Peter
a. Fear of men
b. Compromise of truth
c. Hypocrisy: bad example
The impact of Peter is people FOLLOWED him
B. The Response of Peter
1. Peter knew he was wrong
2. He accepted the correction
2 Peter 3:15
and regard the patience of our Lord to be salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul,
according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you,
Discussion Question:
1. Why is it important to be a living example for God’s Word to the world, especially leaders in the church?
A. Paul is saying, nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law
The word JUSTIFIED comes from this Greek word dikaios:
dikaios is the word for RIGHTEOUSNESS; it is to declare, NOT guilty
How are we declared not guilty before God when we are sinners?
Galatians 2:16
...nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law
You are declared not guilty through FAITH!
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 2 6
Galatians 2:16
..nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through
faith in Christ Jesus,
1. A MAN is not justified by the works of the Law
...even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ, and not
by the works of the Law;
2. WE are not justified by the works of the Law
Galatians 2:17
"But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found sinners, is
Christ then a minister of sin? May it never be!
Galatians 2:18
"For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I prove myself to be a transgressor.
Galatians 2:19
"For through the Law I died to the Law, that I might live to God.
Galatians 2:20
"I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and
the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and
delivered Himself up for me.
2. The life which I now live in the flesh I now live by faith in the son of God who loved me and delivered
himself up for me
Galatians 2:21
"I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ
died needlessly."
F. If there is another way to heaven by means of good works, by means of obeying the Ten
Commandments, then Jesus Christ died uselessly
2. If you can go to heaven by means of obeying a legal system, The Ten Commandments, then Jesus Christ
died NEEDLESSLY
Discussion Questions:
1. Why do you think we should stand firm by the true gospel doctrine, even if it sometimes means embarrassment
of other people?
2. Can you differentiate between the biblical definition of justification versus that of the world?
3. Why is it important to recognize that it is by grace alone that we are justified before God?
4. What should be our motive for doing good to others?
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 3 1
A. The Experience of the Galatians proved that living the Christian life must be by faith
Galatians 3:1-5
You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed
as crucified? [2] This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the
works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? [3] Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you
now being perfected by the flesh? [4] Did you suffer so many things in vain-- if indeed it was in vain?
[5] Does He then, who provides you with the Spirit and works miracles among you, do it by the works
of the Law, or by hearing with faith?
Galatians 2:21
"I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ
died needlessly.”
b. if we can go to heaven by obeying the Law, then Jesus Christ died for nothing
2. He (Paul) asked the Galatians three rhetorical questions to make the discussion quick and fast,
a. Question 1: Did you receive God’s Spirit by works, or by hearing with faith (v.2)
b. Question 2: Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? (v.3)
Paul is asking,
Is the Christian life based on LEGALISM or is it based on FAITH?
Ephes. 1:13-14
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having
also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of
our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His
glory.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why should we be careful when relying on self-effort for our salvation and spiritual growth?
2. What is the guarantee of our salvation in Christ and how do we receive it?
Galatians 3:6-9
Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. [7] Therefore, be sure
that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. [8] And the Scripture, foreseeing that God
would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "All the
nations shall be blessed in you." [9] So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the
believer.
Genesis 15:6
Then he believed in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness.
Galatians 3:7-8
Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. [8] And the
Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel
beforehand to Abraham, saying, "All the nations shall be blessed in you."
Genesis 12:3
And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Galatians 3:9
So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
The Law is not bad, but if you choose to go to heaven by means of the Law, the Bible says you become
cursed.
If you don’t want the grace of God..God will judge you by your own standard
James 2:10
For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
Galatians 3:11
Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall
live by faith
Galatians 3:12
However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them.
C. The Law and faith do not mix in terms of going to heaven (salvation)
Galatians 3:13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written,
"Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree--"
2. When Christ died for us he not only cancelled the curse, he begins to bring blessings.
Galatians 3:14
in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might
receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
Discussion Questions:
1. What was the basis of Abraham’s salvation?
2. Why is relying and observing the Law a false basis for our redemption from sin?
3. If no one can fully satisfy the Law, why do we still abide by them?*
4. Reflect on what Jesus did for us and its implications. What do you think must be our response to Jesus’ sacrifice
for us?
*optional question, as time allows
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 3 4
Why did God give us The Ten Commandments? What is the purpose of The Law?
Galatians 3:15
Brethren, I speak in terms of human relations: even though it is only a man's covenant, yet when it has been
ratified, no one sets it aside or adds conditions to it.
B. The Law which came 430 years later does not invalidate a covenant previously ratified..
If the inheritance is based on The Law, it is no longer based on a (The) Promise
Paul is saying,
C. God promised Abraham by faith, The Inheritance is going to be based on faith
The Ten Commandments (which came later) is not going to invalidate The Promise
1. Unilateral
2. UNCONDITIONAL
When you repent of your sins; you come to Christ and you become a child of God by FAITH. And it is because there is
a relationship; there is UNCONDITIONAL love and UNCONDITIONAL forgiveness.
1. CONDITIONAL, based on
2. performance
The apostle Paul is saying The Law is a bit INFERIOR to The Promise because The Promise was DIRECT from God to
Abraham. But The Ten Commandments were given through a MEDIATOR—through Moses, through an angel.
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 3 5
Galatians 3:20
Now a mediator is not for one party only; whereas God is only one.
Galatians 3:21
Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? May it never be! For if a law had been given
which was able to impart life, then righteousness would indeed have been based on law.
Galatians 3:22
But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be
given to those who believe.
If there is NO LAW, how do you know you are a SINNER? You will never know
Galatians 3:22
But the Scripture has shut up all men under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be
given to those who believe.
Romans 3:19-20
Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, that every
mouth may be closed, and all the world may become accountable to God; [20] because by the works
of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
Galatians 3:23
But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which
was later to be revealed.
The Commandments were given to guide us. So, it is called our CUSTODIAN
Galatians 3:24
Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith.
The purpose of The Law is to show us we are sinners, it is to bring judgment upon us, it is to show us that we
cannot make it, it is to guide us to Christ.
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 3 6
Acts 2:41
So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and there were added that day about
three thousand souls.
Acts 16:30-33
and after he brought them out, he said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" [31] And they said,
"Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household." [32] And they spoke
the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house. [33] And he took them that
very hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his
household.
Now once you BELIEVED the Bible says that you are SAVED. Do you see the sequence, believe, then baptized.
Galatians 3:28
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor
female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:29
And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
Discussion Questions:
1. What does it mean to trust God’s promise by faith?
2. If obeying the Ten Commandments cannot save us, why do we have to follow it? What is its purpose?
3. How can we demonstrate that we truly live by faith?
4. Which among God’s law do you find hardest to obey? Why?
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 4 1
In other words, in olden days, a son even though he is the inheritor by law, does not enjoy the fruit of his
inheritance until the date set by the father; set by the culture.
A. He (a child) is under guardians and managers until the date set by the father
Galatians 4:3
..So also we, while we were children, were held in bondage under the elemental things of the
world.
What does it mean ‘we were under bondage?’
Galatians 4:4-7
But when the fulness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the
Law, [5] in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the
adoption as sons. [6] And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our
hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" [7] Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then
an heir through God.
Col. 2:16-17
Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a
new moon or a Sabbath day-- [17] things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the
substance belongs to Christ.
If you know Jesus you are not in bondage with anyone who acts as your judge, telling you what to
eat..or drink..festival
Col. 2:20-23
If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world, why, as if you were living in
the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, [21] "Do not handle, do not taste, do not
touch!" [22] (which all refer to things destined to perish with the using)-- in accordance with the
commandments and teachings of men?[23] These are matters which have, to be sure, the
appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body,
but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.
The bible is saying that
if you observe all of these RITUALS; it is really MAN MADE RULES; it really does not do anything in
terms of helping you spiritually.
In fact, it makes you proud because you have gone through so many rituals; so many observations of
certain practices and you think you are superior.
You want to do certain things in order to earn merits; in order to earn points to go to heaven. Many
Christians are guilty of the same. You are thinking, ‘if I do certain things, I will earn points and because I earn
points, heaven will be open to me.
ONLY JESUS died on the cross to pay for the penalty of our sins and that is how we enter what?? HEAVEN.
Galatians 2:21
"I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died
needlessly."
..meaning if we can get right with God by means of legalism, and then the Bible says Jesus Christ
died needlessly..
B. When the FULLNESS of time came, God sent forth his son
God sent Jesus not earlier, not later, at the right time.
Galatians 4:4
But when the fullness of the time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the
Law
You see all of us we were born in this world with a male sperm and a female egg.
Genesis 3:15
And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel."
Only Jesus came from the seed of the woman
To be born under the Law simply means, Jesus complied with all the legal requirements. The Bible tells us
that Jesus came to live under the Law, to obey all the requirements of the Law, so that he can redeem us
from the requirements of the Law.
Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has
been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
1 Peter 1:18-19
knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile
way of life inherited from your forefathers, [19] but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished
and spotless, the blood of Christ.
He died on the cross with his PRECIOUS BLOOD shed in your behalf
III. The New Life in Christ
Galatians 4:5-7
..in order that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as
sons. [6] And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba!
Father!" [7] Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
Galatians 4:6
...And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba!
Father!"
Romans 8:15-16
For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of
adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba! Father!" [16] The Spirit Himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God,
Romans 8:17
and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him
in order that we may also be glorified with Him.
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23]
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
The FRUIT OF THE (HOLY) SPIRIT..that is the EVIDENCE!
In other words, people began to have a RELATIONSHIP with JESUS and their lives CHANGED!
Galatians 4:6
...And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba!
Father!"
If you want to be INTIMATE (with God), you have to realize,
B. God gave us the permission to call him: DADDY (Abba)
Galatians 4:7
..Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.
C. You are a SON, you belong to the FAMILY
Romans 8:16-17
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17] and if children,
heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that we
may also be glorified with Him.
You are very, very rich!
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 4 5
Romans 8:18
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the
glory that is to be revealed to us.
If you don’t know your inheritance you will not suffer for Jesus.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why can’t rituals be a means of,
a. gaining salvation, or
b. earning points before God?
2. Why is salvation found in Jesus Christ alone? What qualifies him to be our savior?
3. Humanly, what characteristics are indicative that a person is a child of God?
4. Is it possible for a person to be self-deceived about being God’s child? Why, why not?
Galatians 4:8-11
However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no
gods. [9] But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn
back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again?
[10] You observe days and months and seasons and years. [11] I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored
over you in vain.
Galatians 4:14
...and that which was a trial to you in my bodily condition you did not despise or loathe, but you
received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus Himself.
C. He (Paul) is bringing back old memories (to recall their love for one another)
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 4 6
Galatians 4:15
Where then is that sense of blessing you had? For I bear you witness, that if possible, you would
have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.
You loved me so much, you would have given me what is precious to you—eyes
Galatians 4:16
Have I therefore become your enemy by telling you the truth?
TRUTH hurts!
John 8:32
...and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
Paul is saying,
E. Their motives, the Judaizers...they don’t have the right motive
Galatians 4:18
But it is good always to be eagerly sought in a commendable manner, and not only when I am
present with you. My children, with whom I am again in labor until Christ is formed in you
Galatians 4:20
but I could wish to be present with you now and to change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
Paul is saying..I’m confused, why do you want to go back?
Galatians 4:21-23
Tell me, you who want to be under law, do you not listen to the law? [22] For it is written that Abraham
had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman. [23] But the son by the bondwoman
was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.
Galatians 4:24-28
This is allegorically speaking: for these women are two covenants, one proceeding from Mount Sinai
bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar. [25] Now this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and
corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. [26] But the Jerusalem
above is free; she is our mother. [27] For it is written,
Genesis 16:1-6
Now Sarai, Abram's wife had borne him no children, and she had an Egyptian maid whose name was
Hagar. [2] So Sarai said to Abram, "Now behold, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children. Please
go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children through her." And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai. [3]
And after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Abram's wife Sarai took Hagar the Egyptian, her
maid, and gave her to her husband Abram as his wife. [4] And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and
when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her sight. [5] And Sarai said to Abram,
"May the wrong done me be upon you. I gave my maid into your arms; but when she saw that she had
conceived, I was despised in her sight. May the Lord judge between you and me." [6] But Abram said to
Sarai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her what is good in your sight." So Sarai treated her
harshly, and she fled from her presence.
You see just like many of us, we begin to compromise. We begin to think of a way to help God fulfill his promise..
Genesis 16:15-16
So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. [16]
And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to him.
Genesis 17:1-4
Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him,
"I am God Almighty;
Walk before Me, and be blameless.
[2] "And I will establish My covenant between Me and you,
And I will multiply you exceedingly."
[3] And Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying,
[4] "As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you,
And you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.
Genesis 17:5-7
"No longer shall your name be called Abram,
But your name shall be Abraham;
For I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
[6] "And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from
you. [7] "And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout
their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.
Genesis 17:15-17
Then God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be
her name. [16] "And I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she
shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." [17] Then Abraham fell on his face and
laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to a man one hundred years old? And will Sarah, who is
ninety years old, bear a child?"
Genesis 17:24-25
Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. [25] And
Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Genesis 18:9-11
Then they said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "Behold, in the tent." [10] And he said, "I
will surely return to you at this time next year; and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah
was listening at the tent door, which was behind him. [11] Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in
age; Sarah was past childbearing.
Sarah’s problem (that made it impossible for her to bear child, except by faith in God’s Word)..she was..
1. barren
2. old
3. past menopause
4. womb..inelastic
Genesis 18:12
And Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I have become old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old
also?"
God tells you, ‘this is what I am going to do’..will you believe or will you not believe?...
..that is the meaning of FAITH
Genesis 18:13-15
And the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so
old?' [14] "Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time
next year, and Sarah shall have a son." [15] Sarah denied it however, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was
afraid. And He said, "No, but you did laugh."
God is saying..”is anything too difficult (for the Lord)?”
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 4 9
Genesis 21:1-3
Then the Lord took note of Sarah as He had said, and the Lord did for Sarah as He had promised. [2] So
Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken
to him.
..at the appointed time..in GOD’S TIME..
[3] And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
Genesis 21:4
Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
Galatians 4:23-24
But the son by the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman
through the promise. [24] This is allegorically speaking: for these women are two covenants, one
proceeding from Mount Sinai bearing children who are to be slaves; she is Hagar.
Galatians 4:28
And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise.
You are born into the family of God by SUPERNATURAL intervention of GOD.
Becoming a CHILD OF GOD is the work of GOD’S GRACE: We are born into His family
Discussion Questions:
1. What prevents some people from following Christ even after hearing the gospel?
2. What areas in your life are you tempted to give into in spite of knowing God’s displeasure over it?
3. What concrete steps can you take in order to prevent you from slipping back into your old habits (prior to
coming to Christ)?
4. Among the Lord’s promises, which do you find most difficult to rely on (by faith)? Why?
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 5 1
Freedom in Christ
Galatians 5:1-12
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
I. Freed by Christ
Galatians 5:1
It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a
yoke of slavery.
What is freedom?
1. Freedom from the PENALTY of sin
Galatians 5:3
And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep
the whole Law.
B. You become ENSLAVED to the whole Law
Galatians 5:4
You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen
from grace.
Galatians 2:21
"I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died
needlessly."
Philip. 3:9
and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that
which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
Until you realized that you are a sinner before a holy God, that you are condemned in the eyes of a
righteous and holy God, you will never run to Jesus
2. PRACTICAL
Practical righteousness means you LIVE OUT what Christ has given you.
V. Paul’s Exhortation
Galatians 5:10-12
I have confidence in you in the Lord, that you will adopt no other view; but the one who is disturbing you
shall bear his judgment, whoever he is. [11] But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still
persecuted? Then the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished. [12] Would that those who are
troubling you would even mutilate themselves.
Galatians 5:12
Would that those who are troubling you would even mutilate themselves.
Discussion Questions:
1. Why is freedom in Christ incompatible with rituals and legalism?
2. When we continue on willfully sinning after being set free, how does this affect our relationship with God?
3. How can we fulfill our mandate of practical righteousness daily?
4. Why is compromising Bible teaching dangerous? Can you give a practical example?
What is love?
LOVE is ...not selfish
...thinking what is good for others
...not thinking of what’s good for me
...obeying the Law
The walking in the Spirit is in contrast with the work of the flesh
Living the Christian life...is not hard...it is impossible!
You need a supernatural POWER to help you live the Christian life
B. Temptation
Galatians 5:17
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in
opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Is temptation a sin?
1 Cor. 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will
not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the
way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.
Romans 7:15
For that which I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do,
but I am doing the very thing I hate.
Galatians 5:17
For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in
opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 5 6
If you don’t conquer (the old nature) day by day, you become weaker and weaker..a true Christian will fight
and become stronger and stronger..
Galatians 5:18-21
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. [19] Now the deeds of the flesh are
evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, [20] idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy,
outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, [21] envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things
like these, of which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such
things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:22-24
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23]
gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. [24] Now those who belong to Christ
Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 5:16-17
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. [17] For the flesh
sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one
another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
If you think it’s hard to live a holy life, you have not yet fallen in love with Jesus
Discussion Questions:
1. According to Paul, how should we use our freedom in Christ? Can you give an example?
2. What should be our motivation to walk in the Spirit?
3. What are some daily practices that would help in walking by the Spirit?
4. Among the fruit of the Spirit, which is still not manifested in your life? Why?
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 5 7
I. Introduction
We are NOT SAVED by.. We are SAVED to..
..the Law ..obey the Law
..good works ..do good works
..empowers us to live righteously through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and our love for God
The Holy Spirit is given inside us, so that you will not continue to sin!
Galatians 5:16-17
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. [17] For the flesh sets its
desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so
that you may not do the things that you please.
Paul is saying..
..’the FLESH sets its desire against the SPIRIT’
FLESH: (your) old sinful nature; (your) sinful nature
Galatians 5:18-21
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. [19] Now the deeds of the flesh are evident,
which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, [20] idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of
anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, [21] envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of
which I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit
the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:21
..I forewarn you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the
kingdom of God.
Paul is very clear..a true Christian will not live that kind of lifestyle.
The apostle Paul is saying in all probability, you are not even a Christian. Why? You don’t have the evidence...the
FRUIT
Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness,
self-control; against such things there is no law.
Romans 8:9
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if
anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
Rituals, externalism, does not mean much when it comes to your relationship with God..
Acts 5:3-4
But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back
some of the price of the land? [4] "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it
was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart?
You have not lied to men, but to God."
John 16:7
"But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper
shall not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
1. To HELP us
To admit you are a sinner, you need the work of..the Holy Spirit
Without the Holy Spirit you will go through life thinking everything is okey.
John 16:8
"And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin, and righteousness, and
judgment;
3. To GUIDE us
John 16:13
"But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not
speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you
what is to come.
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 5 10
5. To EMPOWER us
Acts 1:8
..but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My
witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of
the earth."
7. To BEAR fruit
C. The Holy Spirit will transform you from the inside, out!
Ephes. 1:13-14
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation-- having
also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, [14] who is given as a pledge
of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His
glory.
The Bible says, if you don’t have the Holy Spirit you are not even a Christian.
The Holy Spirit comes into your heart the moment by faith you come to Jesus!
Discussion Questions:
1.‘For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one
another..’ Why do Christians then still continue to give in to fleshly desires?
2. What should I advise confessed Christians who continue to live a worldly lifestyle?
3. Why are we commanded not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph 3:30)? How can we grieve the Holy Spirit?
4. Why was the Holy Spirit given to believers?
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 6 1
There is a DIFFERENCE between the Holy Spirit COMING INTO your life and the Holy Spirit CONTROLLING your life.
The Spirit filled life is not an option, it is commanded and expected of us.
EVERY believer is INDWELT by the Holy Spirit
NOT EVERY believer is CONTROLLED (FILLED) by the Holy Spirit
Once you come to Jesus, the Holy Spirit enters your heart.
Ephes. 5:18
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Why is the analogy of being filled with the Holy Spirit compared with getting drunk?
Because when you are drunk, who is controlling you..the spirit of San
Miguel. The Bible says..be controlled by the Holy Spirit
Galatians 5:16
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.
So, to be FILLED by the Holy Spirit is..
1. Not passivity.. ..it is ACTIVELY obeying Jesus day by day
2. Not having more.. ..it is the Holy Spirit having MORE of you
“Lord Jesus, here is my house, here is my life. You can have EVERYTHING...I am your guest. You are the master of
my house.”
I Cor. 2:14
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 6 2
I Cor. 3:13
Spirit-filled
Spiritual Believer Inside Holy Spirit
S
I Cor. 2:15,3:1
1 Cor. 3:1
And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to babes in
Christ.
Characteristics of babies..
1 Cor. 3:2
I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now
you are not yet able,
1 Cor. 3:3
for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and
are you not walking like mere men?
..fleshly...self-centered..
A true Christian...
Galatians 5:24
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
1. Step by step
2. Its an ACTIVE choice
3. You DIE to yourself
Galatians 5:25
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Romans 8:12-14
So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh-- [13] for
if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the
deeds of the body, you will live. [14] For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of
God.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness.
b. Inhale.. ..ask the Holy Spirit to control you (surrender control of your life)
Leader’s Guide – Galatians 6 4
a. Flee temptation
b. Resist
c. Deny yourself
d. Discipline
1 Cor. 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will
not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the
way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.
Discussion Questions:
1. Which areas in your life have you not yet surrendered to Jesus? Why?
2. Which category do you belong to with respect to the influence of the Holy Spirit?
What are you doing to improve on this?
3. The Bible says you cannot be carnal for long and still be a Christian. Why do you think this is?
4. What are the dangers of being a carnal (fleshly) Christian?
1. CHRIST-LIKE character
Galatians 6:1
Brethren, even if a man is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a
spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, lest you too be tempted.
5. Not proud
Galatians 6:3
For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
Beware of spiritual pride..spiritual pride comes when you don’t have true spirituality...based on head knowledge
..TRUE SPIRITUALITY is Christ in us, transforming our CHARACTER.
Galatians 6:4
But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to
himself alone, and not in regard to another.
6. Responsible
Galatians 6:5
For each one shall bear his own load.
Galatians 6:10
So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of
the household of the faith.
Do good to all men, especially to..our (Christian) family..small groups..
Paul is saying,
1. I will not boast on my own effort
Galatians 6:14
..the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.
3. The world no longer attracts me
Galatians 6:15
For neither is circumcision anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Christianity is not about rituals. It’s about a new creation..
2 Cor. 5:17
Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new
things have come.
Discussion Questions:
1. What worldly attractions prevent you from following Christ daily?
2. In living a life for others, why is it a constant challenge to be selfless?
3. How can we sustain being Christ-like daily?
4. How would like to be remembered when you reach life’s conclusion?
