INTRODUCTION

In our daily life we are using a number of instruments or tools. These are used for
making the works easier and faster. Brushes are one of such tools. While hearing the word
‘Brush’ we think that it is concentrated only to ‘tooth brush’ or ‘cleaning brush’. But,
actually brushes have a wide variety.

In the modern world we are giving high importance to cleanliness. The main thing
we are using for cleaning is mainly brushes. In a home, for cleaning floor, we are using
brushes; likewise, for cleaning toilets, wash basins, sinks, etc. In industries like textile
industry, brushes are used to comb cotton and threads. All industries are using different
kinds of machines. Continuous production cause dumping of wastes in the machines. So for
cleaning these machines also, different kinds of brushes are used. The kind of brushes used
depends on the type of machines. Brushes are also used in other fields. For painting a home,
we are using paint brushes of different types and sizes. Brushes are also used in beauty
treatments like hair brush for dying or coloring hair, applying different face packs and
creams on face, etc. Like this, brushes are using in many fields.

So brushes are used by almost all people for one work or other, irrespective of their
status in the society.

COMPANY PROFILE

Cosmo Brush Industries is one of the leading manufacturers of household plastic

brushes and brooms in South India especially in Kerala. It was started as a very small unit,
with only ten workers in November 1999. It is a sole proprietorship firm under the
committed guidance and proprietorship of Mr. Joju Mathew. At the beginning there were
only ten workers and there were no machines. All works were done by using manpower.

After three years some machines were introduced in the firm. But it was a complete
failure due to the low productivity of the machines. So these machines were replaced by
another machinery with high technology and good productivity. It helped the firm to
become a profitable one. Due to the introduction of low productivity machines at the
beginning, the firm had to incur heavy losses. But now the firm is making profits and has
made good the past losses.

At present, there are thirty permanent workers in the industry. About twenty part
time workers are also working here in the evening shift. Besides workers, there are about
fourteen representatives in Kerala and six representatives outside Kerala to increase the
sales.

Thus, Cosmo Brush Industries have become a leading manufacturer of household

brushes which produces three hundred brushes per worker per day. It possesses a good place
in the online marketing also which leads to the export of brushes to different countries
outside India, especially in Germany.

Toilet brush:
Cosmo Brush Industries manufactures a wide variety of toilet brushes. Some of
them are:

MH1:

This toilet cleaning brush is used to clean European type toilets, generally known as
hockey brush. It comes with short handle and comparatively soft bristles so as to minimize
the scratches on the plain medium. It can be used to clean the stem and base of toilets.

LH2:
 This is used for cleaning both Indian and European toilets. Bristles are soft. It can be
used to clean the stem and base of toilet bowl.

WB1:

This is the unique form of wash basin cleaning brush. Its specially designed soft
bristles never cause any scratch to the exposed medium. So these brushes are also used in
hotels to clean big utensils.

R1:

This is a commonly used toilet cleaning brush. Its unique venation of bristle-bunch
makes the user easy cleaning. Long handle is useful to clean any type of toilets.

R2:

It is the deluxe model toilet cleaning brush. This is advanced version of R1. It is also
used to clean all type of toilets. Long handle and hard bristles are the features that help the
purpose.

R3:

It is the economy model toilet cleaning brush of Cosmo. Its short handle and light

Floor sweeping brush:

Cosmo Brush is manufacturing different varieties of floor sweeping brushes also.

SR1:

This brush is used in floor cleaning and also in service stations for cleaning car mats.
Its comparatively heavy handle makes one easy to remove the dust easily.

SR2:

This scrubbing brush is the commonly used one for floor cleaning. Its specially
designed bristles help one to clean the tile-joints with hardly any damage causing to the
floor.

SR3:
 This also comes under the category of floor cleaning brush. Its specifically designed
handle with a bend in the middle avoids touching one’s knee and clothes on the floor while
cleaning. Bristles are somewhat harder so that it is commonly used to clean floors.

Paint brush:
Different varieties of brushes are needed for painting purposes of houses and
buildings. Cosmo Brush Industries is engaged in producing wide varieties of paint brush as
per the needs of the painters.

Bottle cleaning brush:

These types of brushes re used in different firms and houses. Firms like soft drink
manufacturers are mainly using this type of brushes. For cleaning the reusable bottles
different types of brushes are used. In household purpose also, bottle cleaning brushes has a

Artist brush:
Another important product of Cosmo Brush Industries is artist brush. The demand
for artist brushes is very high. They are producing these brushes in different size as per the
needs of the artists. Brushes with very thin bristles, thickly bristled etc. come under this
category. They are also sold as a ‘set of brushes’ or as single pieces.

Make-up brush:
Modern world is very much interested in make-ups. This opportunity is cleverly
changed into products by the industry. For make-up purpose also different brushes in
different shape and size are needed, which includes compact brush, eye shadow brush,
eyebrow brush, eyelash brush etc. All these types are produced by the industry.

Hair dye brush:

For coloring the hair, hair dye brushes are used. Actually, this also comes under the
make-up brush. But the industry is producing this as a separate item as it has a wide market.
The firm is supplying it to different hair dye producing companies and directly into market.

Test tube brush:

These brushes are widely used in laboratories in schools and colleges were test tubes are

Carpet cleaning brush:

dust and other particles on the carpet easily. The long handle and thick bristles make it more

Machinery cleaning brush:

Machinery, especially in flour mills and other firms produce a large quantity of
wastes and dump in the parts of machinery. So it becomes very difficult for the smooth
running of machinery. Thus to make it clean a type of brush is manufactured by the industry.

A new product is going to be launched within three months. The product is a broom,
which has the exact purpose of traditional broom but which is very easy to handle and carry.

Cosmo Brush Industries is an enterprise engaged in the manufacturing and

distribution of household brushes. Here raw materials are converted into finished goods and
are marketed. This firm has different departments to perform various functions such as
production, finance, marketing, human resources etc.
 Production Department

Introduction
In every business enterprise, production is one of the most important functions
because, without production, no business enterprise can exist. So effective management of
production is one of the important functions of the enterprise. Production management
involves various activities related to the production process. It is concerned with the co-
ordination of materials, men, methods, machines and money in manufacturing. These
activities are seen under the control of Production Manager. He has to take measures for
increasing the production through better utilization of raw materials and decrease the cost of
production.

Production department is that part of an enterprise which undertakes the

transaction of raw materials into finished goods. Plant location and plant layout ,production
policy, production control ,repair and maintenance ,research and development , etc are the
main problems involved in production management.

Cosmo Brush Industries are one of the leading firms in the production of household
brushes. It enjoys good demand in Indian market as well as markets outside India. All of its
products are of superior quality and available at cheaper rate.

After purchasing raw materials, they are entered into different process of production
one after the other. The production department is working in three units.

1) Base moulding unit :

For every brush, there are mainly two parts, the base and the bristles.
The base is the portion where the bristles are fixed and it includes the handle of the brush.
The first process in the production is base moulding .Different kinds of bases are produced
for different types of brushes. The material used for producing the bases known as poly
propylene granules which is a kind of plastic. This material are first heated and converted to
a plasma mode. For heating, a big furnace is used. It is then transferred to a machine where
we can change the moulds as per the requirement. For producing a particular kind of brush,
the mould suitable for the base of the brush is fixed in the machine. Then the plasma liquid
is poured into the mould and then it is cooled in the machine. Thus the base is produced.

2) Bristle cutting unit:

Base and bristles are the important parts of the brush. Bristles are the
part which actually helps in cleaning. After the base is moulded, the bristles are fixed. The
bristles should be first of all made fit for fixing in the base. The material used for bristles is
monosilaments.These materials are shaped into fine threads and then cut in to desired level.
For each brush, the size of bristles vary.So different types of bristles is manufactured for
different types of brushes. This is the second stage in production.

3) Bristle planting and leveling unit :

The bristles thus manufactured should be fixed into the base. This is
also done by using machinery. First of all, the bristles are filled in the holes of the base and
then it is fixed properly. This process of fixing the bristles is known as Trimming. After
trimming, there may be some problems like the irregular level of the bristles. So the bristles
are leveled. And after this process, the final product becomes ready.

These are the different process of production in Cosmo Brush Industries. For all
the processes, they are using machinery which makes their work more easy and perfect.

Purchase of raw materials
Purchasing of raw materials is an important process in every organization. In Cosmo
Brush Industries purchase process is done by the production department itself. They use
different raw materials which are purchased from different parts of the country especially
from Delhi, Agra and to a certain extent from Thrissur. They purchase quality materials to
ensure the production of better quality products with minimum cost.

Mode of payment for different production process

1. For different process, the wage payment is in different ways

2. For heating the base material, manufacturing of bristles and leveling the bristles,
workers are paid daily wages.

3. For bristle planting and trimming, the workers are paid according to piece rate system,
i.e.; an amount is fixed per piece or unit.

4. For quality check and rework, the workers are paid monthly salary.

Plant layout
The firm is designed like process layout that it is characterized by keeping similar
machines and operations at one place. Being the production process is not continuous; this
layout is more beneficial to the firm.

Types of factory building

The firm is situated in a single storey building. The factory has natural light and
ventilation. The building is divided into different compartments which enable better
functioning of the firm.
Material handling equipments
Material handling equipments are used in production to ensure the easy movement
of raw materials within the process points. In Cosmo Brush Industries there is no much
distance between different process points. So no material handling equipments are used.
Manual material handling methods are used for material movements.

Maintenance

downs of machinery. Plant maintenance is an activity designed to keep the resources in
good working condition or restore them to operating status. The types of maintenance

Preventive maintenance:
Preventive maintenance is followed in this firm. The machines are checked daily,
corrective measures are taken for any problem. This maintenance prevents the probable
break down and ensures smooth and uninterrupted production by anticipating the break
down and taking corrective action.

Break down maintenance:

Any break down of machinery is reported by the concerned personnel to the
maintenance in charge. The maintenance personnel arranges for necessary corrective action.

Quality control
An efficient quality control team is functioning in Cosmo Brush Industries. The
products manufacturing by them are brought into the hands of customers only after ensuring
standard quality. For assuring quality, there are three aspects. They are:

organization. The person in charge of supervision is the Supervisor. The firm has appointed
a supervisor to supervise all activities of workers, because its influence is very large. The
supervision is beneficial to increase efficiency at all levels. In supervision each level is
headed by the experienced personnel who are using their experience to assess the efficiency

the guidance of marketing manager. They formulate marketing plans, product plans and
product policy etc. For the purpose of increasing sales, the firm undertakes different

The firm’s products have a good market all over South India and also outside India,
especially in Germany. The firm has their representatives to facilitate distribution. The firm
has no retail selling, but they are distributing the goods to the wholesalers.

Market segmentation
The firm has market in South India and also in Germany. One of the main markets is
Kerala. In Kerala, market is segmented on district wise and there is one representative for
each district. Outside Kerala, distribution is concentrated mainly in metropolitan cities like
Chennai, Mumbai etc. The exporting is done mainly to Germany which is undertaken

Packaging
Packaging means placing products in containers or covering them with wrappers for
protection and convenience. Cosmo Brush Industries uses cardboard boxes to pack the
brushes. They collect different carton boxes from nearby shops to pack the products. It is
safe for transportation. Further packaging is done by the wholesalers and other middlemen.

Pricing
Pricing is one of the difficult tasks performed by the management. To an extent,
price determines the demand. There are different strategies that can be adopted for pricing.
Cosmo Brush Industries is very careful in fixing their price. First of all, they find out the
price at which the products can be sold in the market. Then reduce the profit for wholesalers
and retailers. The balance amount is fixed as the price for the product given to the
wholesalers. It will contain at least 5% of profit. If a price is fixed for a product, it will not
be changed in future. It will be constant. If the product has no demand for that price, then it
will be withdrawn from the market.

Advertising
Advertising means giving knowledge to the people about the products. It explains
the features of the product, working procedure, its merits etc. In Cosmo Brush Industries,
they are not giving much importance to advertising as its products are widely using and
people are not searching for branded products. They paste their address on the cartons
containing the products which are exporting to Germany. This is a way through which they
get attention. Besides they give some sort of advertisement in the internet also. There is no
any other kind of advertisement like newspaper advertisement, television advertisement;

Product life simply means the life of the product in the market. Almost every
product launched by Cosmo Brush Industries has good demand in the market because they
are launched after conducting different studies and researches. If there is no demand, the
product will be withdrawn from the market immediately. As per the information received,
the life of a product of Cosmo Brush Industries is an average of 5 years. There are some
products which exceeds a life of 10 years. There are only very few products which does not
create a good demand.

Customer satisfaction
Customer satisfaction is the key success of any business. Cosmo Brush Industries is
very much bothered about the satisfaction of customers. They conduct a good research
about the needs and preferences of customers and then produce goods. After launching the
product in the market, they collect the customers’ opinion about the product and make
necessary changes to the product as per the opinion of the customers. Thus it can produce
what the customer needs rather than what the firm want to produce.

Human Resource Management is aimed at using human recourse in an effective
manner so as to transform them for realizing the objectives of the organization.

Personnel
The objectives of the firm can be achieved only through the management of
personnel at work and their relationship with each other. The importance of labour has
increased in industries where most sophisticated machines are used because the efficiency
and probability of the organization is connected with the best efforts of the labour force. A
well managed personnel department contributes to the efficiency of the Cosmo Brush
Industries. It includes the Managing Director,

Personnel Manager, workers of the production unit, clerical staff and sales
representatives. There are about thirty full time workers and twenty part time workers. The
concern has about fourteen representatives in Kerala and six representatives outside Kerala.

Qualifications

The personnel in Cosmo Brush Industries are selected on the basis of their
qualification. For different workers, the qualification is different. For the main workers in
production field, the qualification is that they should possess an ITI Certificate and should
be experienced not less than one year. The qualification of the office staff is graduation and
an experience of not less than three years. The representatives of the firm should be a
graduate in management and should be experienced in the sales field of not less than one
year. Also they should be very fluent in English, Hindi and the local language of the place
of work

There is no minimum qualification fixed in case of low level workers. If they

possess the required skill and experience, they are appointed.

Training

After appointing a worker, they are trained for a period of three months. In these
three months they are trained properly under the supervision of skilled and experienced
workers. In this period they are given a stipend equal to the wages of the work. Only after
confirming that the person is suitable, he is made permanent.

Motivation

Motivation means inducing the workers to do the best. The process of motivation
helps in improving the productivity. Different kinds of financial and non financial incentives
are provided to the workers. Important among them are:

The firm is working in two shifts. That is from morning to evening for full time
workers and from evening to night for part time workers.

Attendance
Cosmo Brush Industries is very strict in case of attendance. The workers should be
punctual in arriving at work. If the worker comes after 8:30 in the morning, only half day
attendance is given. There is an attendance register to record the time of arrival and
departure. The employees should put their signature in the register every day. After
checking the register, wages or salaries are calculated.

Human Resource Records

Human Resource records are maintained for each worker. The Human Resource
records are maintained for recording the overall performance of each worker. It contains
details regarding the performance, punctuality, absenteeism, leave, time taken for doing
each job etc.

Union Activities

There is no trade union activities in the firm. It is mainly because a good relationship
between the employer and employees. The main reason behind this is that the employees
have direct and good connection with the employer and co-workers. The firm did not affect
the problems of trade union such as lock outs; strikes etc. But there is an informal union
existing between the employees which is beneficial to the firm.
Grievance Handling

In Cosmo Brush Industries all the workers are having a good relation between each
other and also with the top level management. Sometimes there may arise chances for
problems for the workers. So a meeting is conducted once per month for ascertaining the
problems of workers and solving them. Its helps to collect their suggestion for better
working of the organization. A good healthy communication system is there with in the firm
to solve all the problems and disputes amongst workers.

Finance Department

Introduction
Finance function is needed in all types of organization. Of all business functions
finance function is the almost important one. It is concerned with how funds are procured
and used.An efficient finance department is working in Cosmo Brush Industries to take
decisions regarding the finance functions.

Capital Budgeting
Capital budgeting refers to the capital investment decisions of the firm. High
technology machines are used in Cosmo Brush Industries. So heavy investment is required
for these machines. Source of capital investment is Commercial Banks which provide long
term loans and also owned funds. Capital Budgeting decisions are taken only after the
considering the techniques such as NPV, Payback period etc

Working Capital Management

Working capital is the fund required for the day to day working of the firm. The
main source of working capital is short term loans, overdraft and also owned fund. The
working capital cycle of the firm is about one and a half month.

Inventory Management
Inventories are the stocks of the products a concern is manufacturing for sale and
the components that make up the products. It includes raw materials, work in progress and
finished goods. The inventory should be properly managed because deficient inventory
leads to production stoppage and excess inventory leads to blocking up of funds. Different
techniques such as Economic Order Quantity, stock levels etc. are used in Cosmo Brush
Industries to manage inventories.

Cash Management
It simply refers to the management of cash inflows and cash out flows. The cash
inflows and out flows should be controlled efficiently. An optimum cash balance should be
kept in hand to meet necessary obligations. Excess cash should be invested in other project
which yields an extra return. Cash is also properly managed in Cosmo Brush Industries.

Different techniques of cash management are used to keep optimum cash balance in the
firm.

Receivables Management
Selling on credit is a common practice in business. When goods or services are sold
on credit, receivables emerge. Receivables management refers to the planning and control
of receivables of the firm. The receivables of the Cosmo Brush Industries are properly
managed by the proprietor. Usually receivables are collected in cheques and one month is
allowed for the creditors to make the payment. The credit policy of the firm is not so liberal.
The firm is following a strict credit policy. The receivables are collected directly and no
factoring services are used. So here the chances of bad debts are low because the firm
allows credit to only those who are reliable and trustworthy. In case of bad debts, no
measures are taken to collect them. They are written off.

Accounting works of Cosmo Brush

The accounting works of Cosmo Brush Industries are not done in the firm. It is
given to an institution where the accounting works are carried out. Necessary information is
provided to an institution. They prepare different accounts and financial settlements. This is
done because of the non availability of efficient workers. The accounts created by
specialized institutions will be clear and accurate.

FINDINGS AND SUGGESTIONS

Findings
1. In Cosmo Brush Industries, the most impressing thing I have found is the systematic
and continuous arrangement of production process.

2. The management is also very efficient. All the workers are continuously supervised
and all the processes are efficiently managed.

3. For different process, different modes of wage payment are adopted such as piece rate,
time rate etc.

4. The firm is purchasing materials from different parts of the country.

5. Sales are concentrated in South India and in Germany.

6. There are no trade union activities in the firm.

7. Proper waste management is done here.

8. All workers are given equal importance.

9. The base moulding process creates a small amount of pollution.

10. There is some hard and dangerous works. It is not suitable for lady workers.
 11. The building is not so spacious to perform the production process. It causes some
inconvenience.

12. The firm is situated near a housing colony. The noise of the machinery causes some

Problems faced by Cosmo Brush Industries

Although Cosmo Industries is the leading manufacturer of household brushes, it
faces some problems. They are:

1. Power problem: The production process is done using machinery which needs
continuous flow of power. The electricity connection of the firm is 3-phase.
Sometimes production is stopped because of frequent power cuts.

2. Non availability of funds: Finance is very essential for business and industries. The
main source of finance is loans from banks. But the complicated formalities and
procedures make it difficult to get the fund at time.

These are the main problems faced by the Cosmo Brush Industries.

Suggestions
1. The three production units can be situated more closer to avoid or reduce
transportation cost.

2. The firm should find out more sources of raw materials near to the units which enable
availability at the right time and to reduce cost.

3. Sales should be expanded to the whole country and more countries outside India.

4. Pollution control techniques should be adopted to control the pollution caused.

5. Lady workers should be avoided from hard works.

 6. More space should be provided in the production unit.

7. Noise free machine should be installed if possible.

8. Better working condition should be provided to the workers in order to motivate

them.

made Cosmo Brush Industries a very successful undertaking. In this concern, the employees

started about ten years ago and running successfully till now and expanding its operations
day-to-day. They are giving high consideration to their customers, suppliers, workers and
staffs. Moreover, they are doing their business by following all the social ethics and trying
not to do any disturbance to the society.
