MILL RATS HELP FIGHT HUNGER
More than 6,000 Sports fans from Sussex to St. Stephen picked
up tickets to the Mill Rats pre-season opener, which will be held
on Thursday, December 9th 7:00pm at Harbour Station. The
tickets were a gift from Rogers Communications and in return
fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to the game
or donate a Toonie to the Community Food Basket.
“If every fan donates $2 at the game, we stand to make more
than $12,000.00 for the food bank”, said Ian McCarthy,
President & General Manager of the Saint John Mill Rats Pro
Basketball team. “Our players will be donating food items on
opening night, and so will the players from the Quebec Kebs. I
am hopeful between players and fans we can fill the food bank’s
shelves for the holidays”.
There are 16 food banks from Sussex to St. Stephen. Last year
the Community Food Basket of Saint John gave out 7,084 food
orders, 522 more orders than the year before. A recent study by
Food Banks Canada shows the need for food banks in New
Brunswick has increased by four percent since 2009 and 14%
since 2008.
“We depend on the generosity of neighbours and friends” said
Esther Shanks, the volunteer director of the Community Food
Basket of Saint John”. We do not receive any government
money to run our operation”.
Volunteers from the Food Basket, Saint John High School and
Rogers Communications will be at the Mill Rats game
Thursday evening to accept donations of food and/or money.
Items on the food bank’s wish list include canned fruits and
vegetables, tinned tuna, sardines and salmon, breakfast cereal,
canned or powdered milk, peanut butter, flour, sugar, coffee,
tea and juices. 618

member that damaged the child. By ‘extended family’ we
mean an aunt, uncle, in-law, step-parent, cousin, friend of the
family, teacher, coach, another child, clergy or anyone that
betrayed the child’s trust.

The internationally acclaimed Harbour View Choral
Ensemble will mark the Christmas Season with two
concerts - first in the series, The Sacred Sounds of
Christmas, will take place at the Church of the Assumption
on Tuesday, December 7 th beginning at 7:30pm. This
program will focus entirely on sacred Christmas music,
most of it from Europe. The choir will be accompanied by a
small chamber orchestra and also featured in the concert
will be some Christmas organ music, featuring the
director of the Harbour View Choral Ensemble, Michael
Molloy.
There is no admission charge, but there is a suggested
donation of $7.00, as well as a non-perishable food item to
be given the West Side Food Bank.
All proceeds will go towards the choir’s upcoming trip to
Germany and Austria.
On Wednesday, December 15 th Harbour View High School
will celebrate Christmas with the traditional sounds of the
season, as students, staff, and community gather together
for the 14th annual Christmas at Harbour View beginning at
7:30pm. The concert in the school auditorium will feature
the Harbour View Choral Ensemble, Harbour Jazz, a 22
voice jazz choir, and CODA - the HV Choral Ensemble
Alumni Choir, as well as the Grade 10 Band - a 45 piece
band comprised of students in Grade 10 Instrumental
Music. A number of student soloists and small ensembles
will also be featured. The program will include new and
traditional music for the Christmas season, including
some updated arrangements of popular Christmas
favourites. There will also be the opportunity for the
audience to join with the choirs in singing some well
known Christmas carols.
General admission is $10.00, $5.00/students/seniors,
and $25.00/families. There will also be a sale of Christmas
specialty stockings, a Christmas Bake Sale, and a raffle.

end of this week's class there had been some wet snow that had
Child Care Camping Fitness Community Outreach fallen and frozen to the car windshield. I started the car and
turned the heat on to start the melting process and looked for
the snowbrush/scraper. Since it was the first time this season
that I needed to scrape my windshield (the joys of a garage!),
the brush was still in the trunk. No sweat. Put the car in neutral
and made sure the emergency brake was on before hopping out
of the car (I had the Subaru which is standard shift). Eventually
found the brush (trunk light is apparently burned out) and
merrily scraped the windshield. Done. Like I said, no sweat.
Still on a high from the class and watching the Saint John
group do the full set that I am still learning. Time to go home.
Perhaps not . . . the car doors are locked. There I stand,
snowbrush in hand, locked out of my running car. My purse,
with the cell phone I carry but rarely use, is in the car. Back
inside to borrow a phone to call M.A.A. (that's Mikie's Auto
Association, an exclusive club with great rates but the service is
sometimes a little grumpy).Fortunately I was just ten minutes
from home, so the White Knight (okay maybe mostly gray) was
able to bail me out fairly quickly and off home I went (with him
right behind me). His only comment was "Next time leave your
window down" - quite restrained under the circumstances.
So where does the gremlin come in? Although Michael is
certain I accidently locked the doors myself as I exited the car, I
am equally certain I did not. The Subaru does have an auto door
lock that locks all of the doors the first time the brakes are
applied after starting the car. The door locks release when the
car is turned off, but it is sometimes a real nuisance when
dropping someone off with the car still running. I am sure that
there is a gremlin in
that system
somewhere that
locked me out of my
running car.
At any rate, the few
minutes I was
waiting for my
white knight to
arrive were well
spent by scraping
the ice off the
windshields of the
cars of those who
were meeting
inside. My good
deed for the day.
Earlier that day my
brother had bailed
out Michael with a
problem with his
truck, Michael was
on his way to bail
me out, the least I
could do was pay it
forward. Gotta love
winter. 801
