BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY

Aim and Purpose

The North Fremantle Primary School community together will create a caring and positive
educational environment.

To achieve this North Fremantle Primary School has an effective Behaviour Management Policy
which is underpinned by the Curriculum Framework Values and the Values for Australian
Schooling documents.

Principle

All members of the North Fremantle Primary School community are expected to take
responsibility to foster positive and caring behaviour.

To achieve the School Rules the following strategies to promote a caring positive environment at North Fremantle Primary School will be undertaken:

The North Fremantle Primary School Behaviour Management Policy will be available to the whole School community.
Through teaching the Curriculum Framework Values and the Values for Australian Schooling as part of the Curriculum we aim to encourage intrinsic
motivation for the students to be caring citizens.
To encourage students to make responsible choices „Virtues‟ are promoted as part of the Values programme.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

The Classroom Procedures are used to monitor the choices made by students at North
Fremantle Primary School. Teachers will create a positive teaching/learning environment.
Students with the support of parents/guardians will be encouraged to follow the School Rules
and their positive choices will be recorded on the „Student Tracking Sheet‟ and entered on to
the SIS Administration System.

The following procedures operate on a daily cycle.


Extreme behaviour will bypass all steps and students will be sent to the Principal.
An Individual Behaviour Plan (IBP) may need to be developed for students at any
stage of this Procedure.

Step 1: Verbal Warning


Specific verbal warning will be given to the student.

Step 2: Visual Warning -

Specific verbal warning /s will be given to the student.


Students name is recorded on the 123 Daily Recording Sheet.

Step 3: Reflection Area within the Classroom (after three visual warnings)
Student will be moved to a Reflection Area to have the opportunity to reflect on their
behaviour choices when they reach a 3.
Reflection sheet completed.
Student name recorded on the „Student Tracking Sheet‟.

Step 4: Buddy Room (after six visual warnings)


Student sent to a Buddy Room /Administration.
Student to be given an age-appropriate Reflection Sheet to complete. (This form is sent
home at the end of the day for a parent signature).
Student name recorded on the “Student Tracking Sheet‟ and entered onto the SIS
Administration System.

Step 5: Principal/Administration (after nine visual warnings)


Parents to be contacted. Future programs and / or support discussed.

Step 6: Suspension
If the student continues to make irresponsible choices, IN SCHOOL suspension (removal
from the class or playground for up to one day) will take place or HOME suspension for
up to 10 days according to the Department of Education and Training Regulation 35.
Students are required to complete a “return from suspension package whilst on
suspension”.
The parent/guardian will be notified and an interview will be requested before admission.

Privileges such an excursion or school performances may be withdrawn as an interim


step prior to suspension.

PLAYGROUND PROCEDURES
Step 1
Children encouraged to play co-operatively, showing care, consideration and respect
for others.
Positive incentives for good behaviour (Bug awards)

Step 2
The teacher on duty determines the consequences for negative behaviour after
having discussed the issues with the child and completes a behaviour recording slip
(ANT) to be passed on to classroom teacher.

2. Short time out
3. Time out for the rest of the break – walk with duty teacher
4. Send to Principal

Step 3
Parent informed of child‟s behaviour if repeated during the week or if of a serious
nature.
If necessary, a parent interview will be requested by the Principal.

Step 4
If the child continues to offend, IN SCHOOL suspension (removal from class or
playground for up to one day) will take place or HOME suspension for up to 10 days
according to Department of Education and Training Regulation 35. The parent will be
notified and an interview will be requested before readmission.

NOTE
1. Privileges such an excursion or school performances may be withdrawn as an interim
step prior to suspension.
2. The policy work on a one-week cycle with a new start each week.
3. Bullying of any kind, assault, foul language will not be tolerated.

BUG Awards
For “Being Unbelievably Good”. These awards are given out as incentives and are placed in a
box at the office. Each assembly a prize is drawn from the box.

Behaviour Recording Slips (Ants – anti-social behaviour)


These slips are located in each classroom and in the staff room. If a student has misbehaved
at recess or lunch time a slip is to be completed and sent to the student‟s classroom teacher at
the end of the break. If appropriate teachers are to record in SIS. All slips are to be kept for
future reference.

BULLYING PREVENTION AND RESILIENCE PLAN

Rationale

The North Fremantle Primary School community together will create a caring and positive
teaching/learning environment.

To ensure the Whole School Community feels safe and secure, within a supportive
teaching/learning environment, aggressive behaviour, harassment and bullying in any form are
not tolerated.

Definitions

Aggression is:
The negative acts carried out intentionally to harm another person.

Harassment is:
Any unwanted, unwelcome or uninvited behaviour that makes a person feel humiliated or
offended. May be seen as a form of bullying.

Bullying is:
Repeated and unjustifiable behaviour that is Intended to cause fear,
distress and/or harm.
Physical, verbal, psychological, relational attacks on others by a more powerful individual
or group against a less powerful individual unable to effectively resist.

Types of Bullying

Direct Indirect
Physical Hitting, slapping, punching Getting another person to

Prevention

North Fremantle Primary School acknowledges that Bullying occurs in our society.
The School has an effective Behaviour Management Policy which is underpinned by the
Curriculum Framework Values and the Values for Australian Schooling documents.
Values and resilience strategies will be included as part of the Curriculum.
Administration to conduct group/individual counselling when necessary.

Roles
The School
 Supports students who are being bullied and who are bullying by:
1) Contacting parents
2) Enforcing of School Rules and acceptable standards of behaviour
3) Implementing problem solving and conflict resolution processes
4) Modelling appropriate behaviours
5) Providing appropriate curriculum for all
6) Supervising students
7) Providing safe areas
8) Placing students in appropriate classes
 Uses Student Support Services where necessary in order to develop in the student; resiliency and a
sense of self worth and well-being.
 Involves the police and other agencies as necessary.
 Openly deals with issues through classroom activities, drama, discussion, publicity against bullying,
producing posters and pamphlets etc.
 Regularly monitors through surveys and data collection.
Parent / Caregivers
Children who are involved in bullying can be assisted by:
 Being firm but not aggressive in setting consistent behaviour limits and being positive in the things
that are said and done.
 Listen and take an active interest in your child's social life. You will keep up to date with your child's
friendships, but also the disagreements or difficulties that may be occurring.
 Encourage your child to accept and tolerate differences in others.
 Watch for signs of distress in your child. There could be an unwillingness to attend school, onset of
headaches, and stomach aches. Bicycles or equipment may go missing, or there may be requests
for extra pocket money. Other signs may include damaged clothing or books and bruising. There
are many reasons why your child may be unsettled at school. Bullying may be a possibility.
 If you suspect your child is being harassed or involved in bullying others, inform the school
immediately and request an interview with either the Principal or Deputy Principal. The school will
assist in devising strategies or making contact with outside agencies to provide your child with
support both inside and outside the school if necessary.
 Keep a written record of all the violence, harassment and bullying incidents, including details such as
who, what, when, where etc.
 In the cases of physical violence please do not encourage your child to hit back. It could make
matters worse.
 Build your child's self-confidence by recognising and affirming his/her positive qualities.
Students
Students who are being bullied should:
 Try not to show that you are upset as this increases bullying behaviour.
 Try to ignore the bullying.
 Walk away quickly and confidently - even if you don't feel that way inside.
 Try being assertive - speak firmly.
 Avoid being alone in places where bullying happens.
 If bullying persists, write down details of who, when, where and why and discuss the problem with a
member of school staff as soon as possible.
 Discuss the problem with your parents/guardian, and lastly never forget;
 Be proud of who you are - it's good to be an individual.
Students can help stop bullying by
 Not standing by and watching - get help.
 Showing that you and your friends disapprove.
 Giving sympathy and support to students who may be victims of bullying.
 Being careful about making negative remarks - imagine how you might feel.
 Telling a member of staff if you know of bullying. The victim may be too scared or lonely to tell.
