year in 2020 and is inviting everyone to get

is popularly known in the community – is
the collection of three biggest awards in
the community that strives to celebrate
achievements of few rarest of rare individuals,
who have been trailblazers in their respective
fields, leaving a deep impact on the community.  Achiever Award 2019.  de la crème of the country
The Honours, which initially started with
the Kiwi Indian Hall of Fame, has over the
years incorporated the Young Achievers and
Community Excellence Award, to reflect
the community’s growing expectations and
ambitions in their adopted new country.
In 2019, one of the greatest Kiwi-Indian sons,
the former Governor General of New Zealand
Rt Hon Sir Anand Satyanand was inducted into
the Kiwi-Indian Hall of Fame. 
A former lawyer, judge and ombudsman, Sir
Anand Satyanand rose to the highest public
office that this country can offer to anyone
when he served as the 19th Governor-General
of New Zealand from 2006 to 2011.

that projects were capable of delivering good
quality outcomes.

normally have the opportunity to do so is
something I love about the grants programme”.

medals at the 31st New Zealand
Master Games 2020 in Dunedin.
Five Kiwi Indians participated in
different athletics under different age
groups and brought home a total of
two gold, five silver and four bronze
medals.
Eighty-three-year-old athlete
Jagjit Singh Kathuria participated in
the age group of 81-85 and secured
a gold in the long jump, and silver
medals each in shot put, discus and
javelin throw.
Surinder Pal Singh Bajaj, 76, (age
group 75-82) grabbed gold in Long
Jump, 65-year-old Zorawar Singh
(age group 60-65) bagged a silver in
Long Jump, 65-year-old-Pal Singh
Gill (age group 60-65) won a silver
medal in 10 km walk.
Tajinder Singh, a 66-year-
old resident of Mt Wellington

won four bronze medals, one each

Three cities to host memorials for mosque attacks anniversary

hree major cities in the country namely,
Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington,
will host memorial services on the first
anniversary of March 15 mosque attacks.
Christchurch City Council earlier last week
revealed that a remembrance service would be
held on the afternoon of Sunday, March 15,
2020, at North Hagley Park to honour those
killed in the Christchurch mosque attacks and
to build on the spirit of unity that came out of
the tragedy.
The details of the programme will be released
by the Christchurch City Council in the coming
weeks which is being put together with inputs
from those affected by the attacks, including
survivors and families of the victims.
The service will be jointly led by the local
Muslim community, Christchurch City Council,
the Government and Ngāi Tūāhuriri as Mana
Whenua.
The remembrance day event in Wellington
is organised by FIANZ in association with
Wellington City Council called UMAH Day
exhibition. The event will be held from 10 a.m.
till 4 p.m. at TSB Auditorium- Shed six on 4
Queens Wharf, Te Aro in Wellington.
The theme of the exhibition is Understanding
Muslims Attainment and Harmony (UMAH)
which will have lectures series, presentations,
prayer services and exhibition on the incident
and the love received by the Muslim community

homes consented in
Auckland reached
a new high of 15,154
in the December 2019
year, Stats NZ said today.
“Auckland consented
over 15,000 new homes
for the first time in 2019,
significantly higher than
the previous peak of about
13,000 consented in the
mid-1970s,” construction
statistics manager Melissa
McKenzie said.
“Auckland’s population
doubled over this time and is now about 1.6
million.”
Apartments, retirement village units,
townhouses, and other multi-unit home
numbers drove new home growth in Auckland
in 2019, rising 29 per cent in the December
year, while the number of new stand-alone
houses rose 6.8 per cent. More than half of
the new homes consented in Auckland in 2019
were multi-unit homes.
“Auckland consented almost three-quarters
of New Zealand’s apartments, and about half
the country’s townhouses, flats, and units in
2019,” Ms McKenzie said.
Waikato, Wellington, and Otago regions
had the highest annual number of new homes
consented for each of these regions since the
series began in 1991.
Nationally, 37,538 new homes were
consented in the December 2019 year, the
highest annual number since 1974. The overall
record for new homes consented is still 40,025
in the February 1974 year, when the population
of New Zealand was around 3 million,
compared with about 4.9 million today.
Multi-unit homes continue to drive
monthly volatility
After adjusting for seasonal effects, the
number of new homes consented rose 9.9
per cent in December 2019 compared with
November, when it fell 8.4 per cent.
The number of homes consented each month
can vary significantly due to the timing of large
multi-home projects, such as townhouses and
apartment buildings. We recommend focusing
on annual results when looking at changes
over time.

Today’s news of low unemployment, rising
wages and record numbers of Maori in work
shows the economy is in good shape and that
the Government is delivering better outcomes
across New Zealand.
“The Coalition Government has overseen
a strong economy. Our investments in
infrastructure, our focus on lifting wages of
those who previously missed out, and our
regional investments are making a difference,”
Finance Minister Grant Robertson said.
“This is particularly the case for Maori, with
today’s numbers showing that a record number
of Maori are in work,” Employment Minister
Willie Jackson said.
The unemployment rate fell to 4% in
the December 2019 quarter from 4.1% in
September, according to Stats NZ.
“When we came into Government
unemployment was 4.7%. We have seen the
lowest levels in a decade in the past two years,”
Grant Robertson said.
Wage growth continues to sit near decade
highs, with average hourly wages up 3.6% from
a year ago and well ahead of inflation at 1.9%.
“We have seen wages grow more quickly

than the cost of living, meaning that more New
Zealanders are getting ahead and benefitting
from a growing economy.”
The number of Maori in employment rose
by 4,900 in the quarter to 322,600. This is the
highest number on record, according to Stats
NZ.
“This Government has focussed on
supporting Maori employment through policies
to boost skills and get rangatahi into work. The
investments made by the Provincial Growth
Fund are also supporting our regions, after they
were neglected for too long,” Willie Jackson
said.
Grant Robertson said today’s numbers add
to data showing the economy is in good shape
amid global headwinds like the US-China
trade war, Brexit uncertainty and geopolitical
tensions.
“The Treasury is currently assessing the
potential impacts of the Coronavirus outbreak.
But we know we’re in good shape to withstand
global headwinds. Our Economic Plan and
recent significant infrastructure investments
will support the economy and position New
Zealand for the future.”

many girls and characters like Gutthi and Rinku
Bhabhi. These characters are an embodiment of
such interactions. We meet such people on an
everyday basis, and every interaction or even
observation can inspire a new character or for
that matter, a joke or an act that I play on the
stage.
Are there any sketches that you perform
derived from real-life experiences?
T
he journey has been incredible, started
with theatre, drama, radio, TV and then
few films and have been fortunate to go with
directors like Vishal Bharadwaj and Ali Abbas
Zafar working with whom you learn and
progress a lot. On TV, I have been able to do a
few characters which got popular and a big part
of some hugely successful shows, and there
are always new things we are trying to do to
entertain the audience.
Coming to Auckland again, how excited
are you?
What is your first love, stage
performance or movies?
I
love all mediums, and of course, they all
have their own charm. But I love performing
live, and because the audience is in the front
and I get an opportunity to see to meet them,
it’s them who I perform for. While performing
on TV, you don’t get a chance so easily to catch
actual audiences’ reactions and emotions. Live
shows are an opportunity for me to see the
immediate response, and you can hear the love
from the audience – and it’s the best feeling.

The players were divided into four groups of

making Level 1 and low skilled as Level 4. The
league matches were played every Wednesday
in which each group mixed its players with
other levels and play again with other groups.
The group with most wins in the league were
declared winners of the tournament.
The players of the winning group were led by
Arjuna Salinda as captain, Sundeep Daggubati,
Nishantha Jinadasa, Prasad Pagadala, Aman
Kedia, Rajeswar Pedisetti, Sandesh Codhadu,
and Ashok Ambati.
From each level, one player was selected
who displayed all-round skills across the
league which was based on win-loss ratio, skill,
passion, team player role, willingness to share
their game knowledge and were honoured with
the medals.

BWF (Badminton Wold Federation) certified
coaches and soon another coach will be joining
the team,” Mr Peddisetti added.
About George Miller: George’s association
with The Canterbury Badminton Association
(as it was known) began in 1957 and continued
until 2003. He was one of the leading “drivers”
behind the construction of the original four
court Badminton Hall. This construction began
in 1959 and was completed almost entirely by
volunteer labour, ready for the first inter-club
game in 1960.
George served as President from 1963–68,
and from 1970 to 2000 George headed the
Umpires Association and trained and examined
many umpires. He was Deputy Referee in the
1974 Commonwealth games and controller of
linesmen and service judges. George Miller
passed away in August 2019 at the age of 101.

more than $12,000 after receiving a call about suspicious bank

The woman was told she had been over payed by the bank when it
reimbursed her for purchases she hadn’t made.
Fortunately, the bank was able to put a stop to the transfer.
While it’s a new year, these scams — and our advice — remains
the same:
• Never automatically trust someone over the phone or online who
you haven’t met in person.
• If you are receiving a call from someone purporting to be from a
business, ask them for credentials and never hand over personal
details such as computer passwords or bank account details.
If the caller is legitimate they won’t mind verifying their identify.
• If you think a call may be suspicious, hang up immediately and do
not engage with the caller.
Look after your personal details in the same way you would your
wallet and other possessions.
And remember, if something looks or sounds too good to be true,
it probably is.
Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam is advised to
contact Police on 105.

L
ast time I looked at a map of New
Zealand, it was made up of two
main islands – one in the north and
one in the south.
I don’t know what maps the Prime
Minister has in her office, but if her
recent infrastructure announcement was
anything to go by then the South Island
must be missing from most of them.
It says  a lot about the Government’s
priorities when it spends $3.48 billion
on projects for Auckland and less than
$250 million on the entire South Island.
That’s crumbs when you’re talking
infrastructure.
Jacinda Ardern has forgotten there are
more parts of New Zealand in dire need
of new and improved roads than just
Auckland.
In Canterbury, people are crying out
for a new motorway between Belfast
and Pegasus with a bypass at Woodend,
which is rapidly growing in size. The
people living there don’t feel safe
crossing SH1 to get to school or catch
the bus, and this Government isn’t
delivering for them.
when it comes to the Deep South the
only part the Prime Minister seems to
have heard of is Queenstown.
Regional New Zealand got the short
end of the stick. There’s was little-to-
nothing for Taranaki, Waikato, Hawke’s
Bay, Gisborne – the list goes on.
These are productive parts of the
country that, in many cases, are
experiencing strong population and
visitor growth. They need better
infrastructure to preserve their way
of life and keep their local economies
thriving, just like Auckland does.
Not only do they need better
infrastructure but they need it now; and
here’s where National and Labour differ
on this stuff – National is the Party that
actually builds things.
It’s easy to announce a big project but
a lot harder to deliver it. These things
need to be consulted on, consented
and designed in such a way that gets
maximum value for the taxpayer. This
takes a lot of time, skill and effort.
The Christchurch rebuild, ultra-fast
broadband and City Rail Link also
happened under National because we
have the drive and expertise to get things
done.
Labour’s record on delivery isn’t so
hot. It had years in Opposition to plot
its KiwiBuild programme and figure
out how to deliver 100,000 houses in a
decade, only to give up after little more
than a year when things got tough.
Auckland’s light rail hasn’t fared
much better with Transport Minister
Phil Tywford making a complete hash of
the Prime Minister’s promise to have it
built between the city and Mt Roskill by
2021. On current pace, it’s unlikely to be
built this decade.
Unlike Labour, National is the party
of infrastructure and we will deliver. We
won’t forgot about the New Zealanders
who are working hard and paying taxes
outside our city limits.

ndia recently wrapped up a T20 series
against New Zealand with a 5-0 win. India
not only beat the Black Caps but they
showed no mercy toward the nice kiwis when it
came to playing cricket. India winning the T20
series is a reason for some quality cricket and
some judgment errors from New Zealand in the
last three games. In the end, the series was full
of excitement and entertainment. This is what
spectators want, this is what viewers want and
this is what sponsors and broadcasters want.

Shreyas Iyer has been a find for India in this
series. With his mature batting style at number
four and ability to attack spinners got him lots
of praise from cricketing experts. Iyer has been
praiseworthy especially in first two games at
Eden Park where he scored a half-century and
40+ runs respectively. Shreyas scored 153 runs
at an average of 51 in this series.

Kiwibank announced in May 2019 that it was
going cheque-free as cheque use declined and
customers moved to faster, safer and cheaper
ways to pay and get paid.
“Since we announced our plans to go cheque-
free we’ve seen a steady decline in the number
of customers writing cheques. Over the nine-
month transition period we’ve contacted all
known cheque users and we continue to work
with those still using them to ensure they are
ready for the change,” said Kiwibank chief
customer officer Mark Stephen.
“With only four weeks left to deposit a
cheque at Kiwibank, we want to make sure our
customers, particularly those who rarely use
cheques but might receive a once-a-year bonus
or dividend payment, are not surprised when
we go cheque-free.”
Kiwibank is confident large cheque issuers
are aware of its move to go cheque-free and
of the many faster and cheaper options that

immigration, there are plans to further improve
the services given the progressive technological
advancements the department is making.

SmartGates are an automated self-service border
control system that originated out of Australia and
is used by the Australian Border Force located at
immigration checkpoints in departure and arrival
halls at several of their international airports.
SmartGates automatically processes passengers
through passport control using facial recognition
technology along with an E-Passport to check
identities. The system is known to be quick and
secure.

E nsuring every Fijian has access to E-Passports,

The Will to Win This week in New Zealand’s history

T
he defeat in the super over in the 3rd T20I faced by New Zealand against India
at Hamilton, showed how the mind has become as important as matter, in the
game of cricket. India came through victorious because they had the ‘will’ to win
rather than just a ‘hope’ to win.
It will not be an exaggeration to say that New Zealand cricket team might need a dose
of mental coaching, to turn around a situation where they are successfully capturing
“defeat” from the jaws of victory.
Indeed, this is not an unenviable situation to find themselves in the middle of what
could have been a really intriguing home summer cricket series.
Many would agree that this current slip of form, or the fall in mental will to turn
around continuous streaks of defeat would have started right after Blackcap’s defeat in
the finals of the 2019 World Cup against England.
The New Zealand board has faltered in not doing so and therefore, unfortunately, it
will now take a while for their cricket team to get their confidence back.
The Kiwi players had the Indian side on the verge of defeat but the reality of it
happening dwindled just at the winning post.
South Africa, a side that should have done wonders in the past, failed to do so, when
they were put to the test under pressure and thereafter were branded in world cricket as
‘chockers’.
The Kiwi side, with a unique reputation of reaching at least every ICC World Cup Semi-
Finals and being every cricket fan’s second most favourable team to win the coveted
Cup after their home-country, seriously risk the same “choker” tag for themselves.
India, on the other hand, seems a side that has mentally grown by leaps and bounds.
The temperament shown when under such immense pressure by both Md. Shami bowling
the last over and Rohit Sharma in the super over was quite remarkable.
The mature words of Sharma after his feat were even more impressive. He said that
he kept his head still and waited for the bowler to make the mistake. One needs to have
been prepared and experienced to think in such a calm fashion at a time when ones
adrenalin was flowing with such a high level of anxiety.
One has seen Rohit Sharma winning in a similar fashion on the last ball in an IPL
game for Mumbai Indians but to do so for India, shows how he has grown not only as a
player but also as a thinking cricketer.
Shami, on the other hand, is a player who has surprised everyone in world cricket. He
is going through an upheaval in his personal life but seems to put all that behind him
when he gets the ball in his hand.
He is bowling sharp, accurate and seems to have a natural cricketing brain that
sometimes astonishes one. The way he changed his length and strategy after the initial
2 balls of the final over of the Indian innings in the 3rd T20I, was what astute cricketing
thought process is all about.
India, in the past was a side that had the potential but faltered quite often when most
needed.
The Indian cricketers of both the seniors and the U-19 sides presently are showing one
distinct characteristic and that is, that they are not afraid to fail.
One can also see the camaraderie, team work and that element of happiness that they
showcase in one another’s success. One needs to applaud the people behind the scene to
create such an atmosphere.
The T20 format needs players to be daring and innovative. But if one looks deeper, it
has this wild savage thought process to it.
A cricketer has those precious minute seconds to think and therefore, instinctive
cricket reaction becomes the order of the day. One can go into the game with all the
planning, but T20 cricket is more of a mind game,
This is why mental coaching and mentoring has become essential for the development
of a modern cricketer.

‘Trust each other’ and ‘aim for inclusivity’

Shirin Brown seeks Labour's nomination to represent the diversity of Auckland Central

O
ver the weekend, we got to know that Shirin Brown has
been nominated to seek selection for the Labour Party
candidate in Auckland Central at the upcoming elections.
It’s still a process and it’s unclear at this stage who are the
other nominated members. But, if selected, she will be standing
for a seat in Parliament that represents the CBD, Waiheke, Aotea
Great Barrier and Rakino. Shirin was elected to the Waiheke
Local Board from 2013-2019.
Migrant Views NZ caught up with Brown to ask a few curious
questions. The following are excerpts from our conversation.
Why are you standing for Labour?
I’m really impressed by Jacinda Ardern’s ability to bring people
together and to start conversations around doing government a
bit differently. For example, the way she dealt with the Mosque
attacks and running a coalition government, which I’m sure has
different perspectives, but which pulls in the same direction.
I also like the emphasis on social justice and working
collectively for the benefit of all New Zealanders that is the
bedrock of Labour policy.
Lastly, I think we’ve had great gains in terms of spending
on health and schools under this government, while also being
fiscally responsible.
So it’s not about spending more, but making different spending
decisions that benefit society. The bedrock of New Zealand
society is small businesses and independent contractors so we
also need to make sure that as we move into the future there
are meaningful employment opportunities for people.
With six years of local government experience, I also feel
we need to have stronger links between Central and Local
government and I feel I’m ideally placed to help build those
bridges because I know some of the key players and the
landscape.
I’m not sure how hard it would be, and I know others have
tried, but I’d love to work on a school for Central Auckland.
If we’re building a city of the future, key amenities need to be
located near where people are.
I also think there’s huge potential to increase voter turnout. It
was 79% at the last election but there are certainly opportunities
to increase the vote with people who are foreign born and
students, both demographics that are poorly represented in voter

E ven as anti-citizenship protests continue to rage across the country, the
Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship
proof from RTI applicants. The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide
the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information
(RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.
Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by
the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of
the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.
"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims
and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.
Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details
of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.
"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the
provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the
varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

became seriously ill, while 2,788 patients remained
in severe condition, and a total of 23,214 people were
suspected of being infected with the virus. A total of 632
people had been discharged from hospital after recovery.
The commission said 221,015 close contacts had been
traced, adding that among them, 12,755 were discharged
on Monday, with 171,329 were others still under medical
observation. The Hong Kong victim, a 39-year-old man,
died on Tuesday morning the Princess Margaret Hospital
where he was in isolation after he was confirmed as the
city's 13th coronavirus case on January 31.
An investigation was opened in France in July 2016 over contracts for the
sale of civil and satellite aircraft between 2004 and 2016.

• To prepare this salad recipe, peel the
avocado and cut fine slices of it in a bowl.
Next, wash the cherry tomatoes and cut
them into halves. Peel and finely chop the
red onion in a small bowl.
• Then, finally cut julienne of boiled chicken.
Also, wash the arugula and lettuce leaves,
and pat them dry.
• Keep these salad leaves aside until required.
(Note: You can also grill the chicken for
better taste using the least oil.)
• Now, prepare the salad dressing my mixing
together red wine vinegar, extra virgin olive
oil, oregano, Dijon mustard, black pepper
and lemon juice.

large bowl and throw in the washed arugula
and lettuce leaves.

prepared dressing over it and toss well all
the ingredients. Once done, serve with a
bread of your choice.

• 4 sliced onion

• 2 cup yoghurt (curd)
• 2 teaspoon crushed to paste ginger

• 3 mashed tomato
• 8 peppercorns
• 1 teaspoon garam masala powder
• 1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
• For Garnishing
• 1 handful chopped coriander leaves
Method
• To prepare this main dish recipe, firstly, clean
and wash the mutton pieces. Heat ghee in a fry
pan. Add cardamom, cloves, black pepper corns,
cinnamon stick. Saute these for a minute and add
the sliced onions along with salt in it. Saute till
the onion turns light brown in color. Next, add
ginger paste along with garlic paste and cook the
mixture until the raw smell disappears.
• Now, add turmeric powder, red chili powder and
coriander powder to the spice mixture and mix
it well.
• Add the mashed tomatoes and mix it well with
the other ingredients.
• Make sure the tomatoes turn pulpy and cook this
mix until oil separates from the masala in the pan.
Now, add mutton pieces in this masala and mix it
well. Ensure that mutton pieces are evenly coated
with masala.
• Pour the yoghurt in the mutton masala and mix
it well.
• Let it cook for 4-5 minutes and, then, add water
in it. Stir it well and check the seasoning once.
Add chopped coriander leaves along with garam
masala powder in this.
• Give it a quick stir. Cook it for another 25
minutes to ensure that mutton is no longer raw
and is perfectly juicy. Once done, take it off the
flame and transfer the dish in a bowl. Serve it hot
with rice or naan to enjoy!

ilmmaker Subhash Ghai says his
upcoming short film named "Gandhi:
A Perspective" is an unbiased effort.
"People, including some youngsters, have
doubts about the successful journey of Gandhi
ji. We have tried to give them answers through
this film. I haven't tried to make commercial
film on his (Mahatma Gandhi) life. We did
not put any 'masala' in the film. This film is
entirely based on research. When I decided to
make a 30-35 minute film on Gandhi ji, it was
my duty as a writer to do thorough research
on his life and make an unbiased film. I had
knowledge of his life journey but when I got
the opportunity to make this short film I felt I
am making a full-length feature film because
it involved a lot of research," said Ghai at a
special screening of the film in Mumbai.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is
acknowledged as India's Father of The Nation,
employed nonviolent resistance to lead the
successful campaign for India's independence
against the British.
But why did the Mahatma allow Partition
of the country? Why did he not prevent the

agreed to do it because he wanted to work
with me. After working with him in this film,
I feel that he was the apt actor for the role,"
said Ghai.
Ghai's last feature film was "Kaanchi: The
Unbreakable" in 2014. The film starred Kartik
Aaryan and Mishti. Sharing his reason for
not directing a film over the past few years,
Ghai said: "I haven't made a film after 2015
because I wanted to look after (his film school)
Whistling Woods International. I have put in
all my money and experience into makuing
that institute, and when it got involved in a
legal battle I kept myself away from making
films over the past three to four years."
He revealed his plans for the future: "I feel
you should make a film where the audience
