HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS EVALUATIVE REPORT 2

Abstract

This report revolves around the detailed analysis of the facilities of the college with respect to

those Human Factors and dimensions of Ergonomics. Aspects like infrastructure, safety

measures, user friendliness, etc. has been discussed in the following report in a perspective of a

student studying in Christ University, BGR campus. The report highlights some quality steps to

ensure that time and efforts are not wasted and increase in human productivity.

Human Engineering and Ergonomics

Evaluative Report on our College

Introduction

With the principles taught in class like Human Factor and Ergonomics in mind, the report

has the analysis about the different aspects of our Bannerghetta Road Campus.

Human factors can be defined as “application of psychological and physiological

principles to the design of products, processes and systems.”

The goals of human factor are-

1. Reduce human error

2. Increase productivity

3. Enhance safety and comfort with a specific focus on the interaction between humans and

thing of interests.

4. And Occupational Health

Ergonomics can be defined as “study of people’s efficiency in their working

environment.”

About the Campus

Christ University started its third campus in Pai Layout, Hulimavu, Bannerghetta Road,

Bangalore on May, 2016. The campus offers undergraduate Honours and Triple Major degree

programmes in Economics, Psychology, English, Journalism, Business Administration, Political

Science, Media Studies and a Bachelors and Masters programme in Tourism and Travel

management along with Masters in English and Cultural studies.

The campus premises consists of a boys hostel, a mini mobile basketball court, an

auditorium that seats 1500, a mini auditorium that seats 200, four eateries, a library spread across

two floors and classrooms spread from 1st floor to 8th floor.

When we analyze the constructions, BGR Campus displays world class structure with a

mammoth pillars in the entrance. The main problem that we students feel as a fault from the

management is that the campus is not at all spacious and has nothing special for greenery or as

natural beauty comparing to other Christ campuses in Hosur Road and in Kengeri. As the campus

is having more than 1500 students from various disciplines, the resting area would not be

sufficient for everyone. The reception area will look good if it is properly being decorated and

all. The premises of the campus is also too small compared to other universities.

The play area just consists of a mobile basketball court where proper basketball match

could not be even played, it has to be brought down to three on three. There is no other sports

facility in the campus other than two table tennis tables in the basement. Thus sports facilities

being the worst thing on the campus.

Auditoriums

1. Main Auditorium
HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS EVALUATIVE REPORT 5

The main auditorium is truly one of the remarkable things that is there in this campus.

With a cinema hall like sound surround system (JBL Speakers) and around aseating

capacity for 1500, the main auditorium leaves a mark in audience minds. The lighting

system of the stage and other technological advancements just make the programmes

happening in the stage a visual spectacle in the eyes of the viewers. The main

auditorium has been divided into two different viewing spaces across two floors – 3rd

floor and balcony in 5th floor. The balcony in the 5th floor gives us an aerial view of

what’s happening in the stage. The seating has been designed in a way that everyone

can see and can sit comfortably with fully air conditioned. The projection system

handled by a group of skilled technicians will just make your day more colourful in

the main auditorium.

2. Mini Auditorium

The mini auditorium is exactly a miniature version of our main auditorium. It also has

a good projection system and sound system that reminds us of home theatre setup.

With a capacity for around 300 people it’s an ideal spot for conferences and

presentations by eminent personalities for selected groups or classes to attend to. The

chairs are cushioned with less legroom space compared to main auditorium.

3. Seminar Hall

The seminar hall is just a budget rip off version of what Christ gave us in form of

Main and mini auditoriums. It’s actually a bigger classroom with those desk attached

chairs with a capacity for around 170 people. It will be a good destination for small

seminars conducted by a class as it offers bad viewing experience from back rows.

Library

The money Christ spends on maintaining college library is humongous and

visible. The students have access to various journals, research papers, articles and

magazines across the world in various disciplines. There is a total of 8870 books in

the library. The computer access in library is also appreciable. The shacks of books

have been arranged in a proper way where it is easily accessible for people of all

sizes. The library offers mainly books related to our academics and books on leisure

reading is very less in number. The library is enclosed using glass planes thus

maintaining the actual decorum of a library. The negative aspect comes in form of the

desks and chairs in the library. They are made of wood and thus heavy, so there will

be unwanted noise created while moving those furniture.

The height of table is perfect in proportion to the desk.

Discussion Area

The so-called Discussion Area is the name given to the 2nd floor balcony where people

come together for meetings and discussions. If there is any fest or any event, it is an ideal place

to sit and have lunch. There is 14 medium sized round tables with chairs around it. During

afternoons and evenings, it will be full of sound coming from the roads as it is open. If the place

was bounded by glass panes, the place would have been better.

Quadrangle

It’s a place where students of the campus showcase their talents and various skills for

informal events or promotions. It’s not fairly big enough for the whole campus to watch the

performances. The area near the entrance (outside Audi block) is more suitable for such

performances and it could have been made using tiles, so that it will be support dancers as well.

Stationary Shop

The idea of a stationary shop inside the campus is too good, as it will meet the student’s

day to day requirements.

Classrooms

The classrooms are small and thus to ensure the maximum, the seats have been made in a

way that they are too close to each other and a person who is fat cannot sit comfortable in the

class. Even the seats are not comfortable, even though they have been adjusted in perfect

proportion to the desks. There is two boards in all classes- blackboard and whiteboard. The

projector system in each class is new and advanced. Only some classrooms have the high

platform for teachers, thus teachers who have less height cannot teach in that class and even

won’t be able to see the whole class. There is no external route to get out of the campus during a

fire. There should be a proper fire exit route leading to outside of the academic block to avoid

causalities in at least three sides as a floor is too big. Some classrooms located on the back side

of the block does not have a proper noise free environment, as there will be students every day

playing basketball or any other sort of practice.

Christ Hall

Christ Hall is the boys hostel of our campus. It even has two floor with luxury rooms with

every facility for guest lecturers and other guests who come for a visit in the campus. There is a

capacity for 200 boy students spread across five floors. The facilities are really good consisting

of gym access who no one else in the college has access to which should be changed and at least

sports students should be given the right to use it along with college wifi 24x7 and study hall in

every fall of Christ Hall. Unlike the actual academic blocks floors, Christ Hall floors are not

sound proof, which is a negative aspect. If one bangs his door loudly also it will be echoed

throughout the entire floor.

Eateries

The campus basically has one large canteen with a huge space for people to sit along with

two other small eateries- Nandini and Café Coffee Day. The canteen is not at all efficient in

quality of food. The price of food is not at all in subsidized rates. Nandini basically serves snacks

and Café Coffee Day serving sandwiches and different types of coffee at subsidized prices as an

incentive for the students. The cafeteria is spacious but during lunch hours it usually cannot

withhold the crowd.

Basement

There is a parking basement in the campus spread across three floors. The first floor

basement will be utilized by the students for various practices and other programmes. The other

two floors are fully used for parking of teachers as well as students vehicles. The parking area is

nicely planned and made. The only problem being it will be open during college hours, thus

students cannot practice early hours as well as late evenings.

HUMAN FACTORS AND ERGONOMICS EVALUATIVE REPORT 9

Conclusion

To conclude, we can state that based on human factors as well as ergonomic dimensions,

for students the infrastructure of the campus is too good, but there are various aspects of the

campus that need to be improved for more productivity of the students like gym facilities and

other sports facilities which will always make the students mind and body fit.
