Introduction

What is Drugs

Drugs can be broadly defined as substances that change the way the brain and body
function. One of the key messages that the students learn during this module is that some drugs
are legal, while others are not. Legal drugs include medications when they are prescribed to you
by a medical professional, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol. Even though legal for adults, tobacco
(which contains nicotine) and alcohol are illegal for children. Drugs that are illegal for everyone,
all the time, include marijuana and cocaine. As this list shows, legal drugs can be helpful, but
certain legal drugs, such as alcohol, can cause tremendous damage. All drugs can affect the
brain and body, and children should only take medications that are given to them by a trusted
adult. During the second part of the activity, the students will look in magazines, newspapers, on
the Internet, and in movies to find out how illegal and legal drugs are presented in our society.
They will discover that often drugs are shown as being enticing and appealing. Both men and
women shown using drugs are, in many cases, attractive, well dressed, and seem to be having
a great time. The fact that drugs are paired with such positive qualities sends a confusing
message to kids. Once the students learn how drugs are presented in the media, they will have
a better understanding of why drugs are such a serious problem in our society. This activity will
lay the foundation for the remaining activities in the program, which focus on how drugs affect
the brain and the nervous system. By the end of the program, the students will have a better
idea of why people are tempted to try drugs, but they will also know why—based on scientific
fact—it is so important to resist that temptation.

Drug addiction

Addiction is a complex issue and affects everyone differently. This can depend on the
type of drug used, amount used and the length of time the drug(s) have been used for. Some
drugs are more physically addictive while others are mentally or socially addictive. Drug use can
lead to tolerance and dependence.

Tolerance – This means that a person needs more of the drug to achieve the same effects they
experienced previously with smaller amounts.

Dependence – This means that the drug becomes central to a person’s life and they feel they
cannot function properly without it.
Drug Problems in the Philippines

Reports of drug related crime are common in the Philippines media. The main concern
tends to be towards Shabu which gets the most media attention. It does seem that illegal drug
use is on the rise, and this has worrying implications for the future. There is an urgent need to
educate young people as to the dangers of drug use, and there is also a great need to help
those who are already addicted to escape their misery. Failure to do this could mean there will
be further deterioration within many Filipino communities.

Statistics for Drug Problems in the Philippines

A US government report in 2009 concluded that illegal drug use was a significant
problem in the Philippines due to corruption and poor law enforcement. There was particular
concern expressed about the amount of methamphetamine (shabu) and cannabis production in
the area. Drug addiction appears to be on the rise in the Philippines. There are believed to be
as many as 6.7 million drug abusers according to figures from 2004- this is a dramatic increase
from 1972 when there was only believed to have been around 20,000 drug users in the
Philippines. The drug that is most abused in the Philippines continues to be Alcohol – they are
the second highest consumers of alcoholic drinks in South East Asia.

Most Commonly Abused Drugs in the Philippines

*Alcohol
*Marijuana
* Heroin
*Cocaine
*Methamphetamine
* Inhalants such as nitrates and gasoline. These can be a cheap way for people to get high.
* Opium
* Ecstasy (MDMA)

One of the most abused drugs in the Philippines is a local type of methamphetamine
mixed with caffeine known as Shabu. This stimulant is believed to be the drug of choice for 90%
of the Philippines illegal substance users. This is a powerfully addictive drug that can cause
people to have intense hallucinations and become extremely paranoid. Some users of this drug
have even jumped off high rise buildings because they believed they could fly. Shabu didn’t
arrive in the Philippines until the mid eighties, but it soon became hugely popular among drug
users. Methamphetamine causes feelings of euphoria and the user feels full of energy.

Drug abuse leads to many problems such as:

The individual does not have to be abusing a substance like Shabu long before they become
addicted.
* Those individuals who become addicted can become obsessed with their habit. This means
that everything else in their life will take second place.
* The individual’s behavior will change. They may become physically violent or engage in other
types of bad behavior.
* Those who abuse these drugs can struggle to keep down a job. They may become
unemployable.
* Young people who use these substances will be unable to perform well in school or college.
This means that they will be limiting their future opportunities.
* When drug users run out of money to feed their habit they will be tempted to turn to crime.
This may mean stealing from family and friends or from complete strangers.
* Many addicts fall into a life of crime and eventually end up in prison or worse.
* If the drug addict is unable to escape this behavior it is highly likely to lead to their death. This
individual will shorten their lifespan as a result of their behavior.
* Illegal drug users run the risk of overdose. It can be difficult to assess the strength of illegal
drugs, and it can be similar to playing a game of Russian roulette every time the addict uses
these substances – it is even possible for people to die of an overdose after only trying illegal
drugs one time.

Cost of Drug Addiction in the Philippines

* A great deal of domestic violence is associated with drug abuse.

* A huge proportion of criminal acts are committed by individuals who are trying to satisfy their
drug habit.
* The economy suffers because drug users become less productive in their jobs or they become
unable to work completely.
* The government needs to spend large amounts of money on tackling drug problems. The
resources used by law enforcement alone are a drain.
* Money that could be spent to improve the life of a family is wasted because one member is a
drug addict. It can lead to a situation where the rest of the family is living in poverty while one of
them wastes thousands of pesos each week on drugs.
* A criminal underworld had developed in order to take advantage of the desire for these illegal
substances. The money made from selling drugs is used to finance other criminal acts as well
as terrorism.
* Drug addict can destroy communities. It can lead to a situation where people are afraid to
leave their homes because of fear of crime.
* The individual who falls into drug addiction can lose everything – including their own self
respect. This miserable life is a waste of human potential.

Treatment for Drug Addiction in the Philippines

* Narcotics Anonymous is a twelve step program that supports the individual to escape their
addictions. This fellowship is not just focused on stopping the drug use but also on building a life
worth living.
* There are a number of drug rehabilitation facilities in the Philippines including Serenity at the
Quarry.
* It is becoming more common for Filipinos to go abroad to seek the most effective treatment for
their addictions. Drug and Alcohol Rehab Asia is based in Thailand and is considered to be one
of the leading rehab in Asia.

Drug prevention program in Philippines

The Quezon City Council has passed a resolution urging the Quezon City Anti-Drug Abuse
Advisory Council (QCADAAC) and the Quezon City Council Committee on Anti-Illegal Drugs to
conduct an anti-illegal drugs education program for parents and teachers associations (PTAs) in
all public elementary and high schools in the city.

Law enforcement agencies are doing random drug testing in primary schools on teachers as
well as on 10-year-old fourth grade students, moves which the education department
vehemently opposed.

Drug Abuse Prevention Seminar in the Workplace

The Board has implemented seminars that aim to increase the awareness of the employees and
the top level management on the detrimental effects of drug abuse in the workplace. The topics
on substance abuse have been incorporated in the regular safety and health training programs
to encourage more companies to put up their own policies
Also the conducted a seminar about laws like the republic act 9165 or the ACT INSTITUTING
THE COMPREHENSIVE DANGEROUS DRUGS ACT OF 2002
DISCUSSION

The method we are going to use on drug prevention is seminar a department seminar.

Seminars are simply a group of people coming together for the discussion and learning
of specific techniques and topics. Usually there are several keynote speakers within each
seminar, and these speakers are usually experts in their own fields, or topics. Several topic
reviews are scheduled each day throughout the seminar, and attendees can usually make their
choice of topics from among these scheduled events. Many individuals attend seminars each
year. The topics of seminars can be as varied as the groups attending them, but in particular,
there has been a rise of Internet Marketing Seminars over the past five years, due to the
increased interest in this field.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Seminars

Seminars can be advantageous because they provide an environment where participation is

encouraged and group learning can take place. On the other hand, the organization of a
seminar may not be conducive to some learning styles, and some participants' expectations
may not be met adequately.

Seminars vary depending on the goals and objectives, but generally they are confined to a
smaller group of people so that group discussion is facilitated. A more personal learning
environment allows in-depth discussion between the speaker and participants that would
otherwise not be possible in a classroom or business setting. According to Advancing Women,
seminars also offer a chance for like-minded people to get together, which helps to inspire
individuals who are interested in learning more about a topic.

On the other hand, for seminars to run smoothly, a tight schedule often must be followed. This
can be a hindrance for some people who want to discuss a particular issue in greater detail.
Also, seminars are often viewed, either rightly or wrongly, as an opportunity to learn everything
there is to know about a topic. Disappointment can thus set in after a seminar if a participant
does not feel like she achieved everything that she wanted to.
Costs, time off and possible low quality are all disadvantages of seminars.

A seminar is an extended discussion led by an expert on an educational topic that usually takes
place over two or three days. Participants typically read research or literature in preparation,
and each day's session involves teaching methods such as reading discussion, presentations
and group activities. While seminars can help you make professional connections, renew your
enthusiasm for a topic and gain advanced knowledge, the decision to attend is also wrought
with disadvantages.

Costs
Seminars cost a lot of money to run, and as a result, the cost for attending can be prohibitive to
many potential attendees. According to marketing expert Ralph Elliott, seminar organizers have
to strike a delicate balance between meeting expenses and creating a good value for
audiences. Even if the seminar itself is a good deal, however, other expenses like hotel
accommodations, food and travel are usually your responsibility, preventing many people from
attending.

Time Away from Work

While seminars can be a great way to immerse yourself in a particular subject for a few days,
time away from your job and life responsibilities can bring stress into your time of education.
Home business management expert Vishal P. Rao states that it may even prohibit people who
would like to attend the seminar from going at all. For example, the inability to get time off from
work, a lack of child care or other family responsibilities can all make attendance complicated.

Risks and Expectations

Seminars also may not involve quality speakers. Since many people attend to hear an expert
speak about the chosen topic, the quality of the experience can be drastically reduced if the
speaker shares incorrect information or is not even an authority. Additionally, expectations that
the seminar will be a quick fix for educational or business issues can result in dashed
expectations and a feeling of wasted time. Rao suggests doing your own careful research in
regard to a seminar's benefits and credibility.

Preventive education and programs in the Philippines

The DDB has a significant role in helping attain the Filipinos’ collective societal vision. All of the
agency’s efforts falling under its drug demand reduction and civic awareness and response
pillars accomplish the tasks set to initiate anti-drug abuse advocacies and information
campaigns.

Preventive education programs all seek to discourage users and impending abusers from
experimenting with illicit substances or continuing to abuse them. It is a subset of drug demand
reduction. These strategies complement the approaches employed in reducing consumer
demand for controlled substances. The Board utilizes policies and programs which seek
reduction of desire to obtain and use illegal drugs.
PREVENTIVE DRUG EDUCATION PROGRAM POLICY FOR CURRICULUM AND
INSTRUCTION

The Department of Education (DepEd) issues the enclosed Preventive Drug Education Program
Policy for Curriculum and Instruction in support of the National Drug Education Program as
provided in Section 43, Article IV of Republic Act No. 9165, hereunder quoted as
follows: Instruction on drug abuse prevention and control shall be integrated in the elementary,
secondary and tertiary curricula of all public and private schools, whether general, technical,
vocational or agro-industrial as well as in nonformal, informal and indigenous learning systems.
Such instructions shall include: Adverse effects of the abuse and misuse of dangerous drugs
on the person, the family, the school and the community; Preventive measures against drug
abuse; Health, socio-cultural, psychological, legal and economic dimensions and implications of
the drug problem; Steps to take when intervention on behalf of a drug dependent needed, as
well as the services available for the treatment and rehabilitation of drug dependents; and
Misconceptions about the use of dangerous drugs such as, but not limited to, the importance
and safety of dangerous drugs for medical and therapeutic use as well as the differentiation
between medical patients and drug dependents in order to avoid confusion and accidental
stigmatization in the consciousness of the students otherwise known as the Comprehensive
Dangerous Drugs Act of 2001.

Likewise, as stated in the Political Declaration and Plan of Action of the United Nations Office of
Drugs and Crime (UNODC) of which the Philippines is a member, the worlds drug problem
remains a common and shared responsibility that requires effective and increased international
cooperation that demands an integrated, multidisciplinary, and balanced approach to supply and
demand reduction strategies.

Here is some prevention techniques on other country

Sands China Ltd. co-organised a seminar entitled “Drug Prevention for a Harmonious Family”
with the Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) Aug. 21. The seminar was held at The Venetian® Macao’s
Adelson Advanced Education Centre, attended by around 35 team members from various
departments. It is the first time Sands China has partnered with IAS to organise a seminar of
this kind for its team members.

Wednesday’s seminar was held in support of the Macao SAR government’s 2019 International
Day against Drug Abuse campaign, with topics covering Concepts of Drugs, Alcohol-related
Harm, and Drug Refusal Skills. It aimed to enhance awareness of drug abuse and build a drug-
free society. The speaker for the seminar was head of IAS’ Drug Abuse Prevention Division,
Tang Sut I, who introduced the issues faced by teenagers nowadays and shared some tips and
techniques on how to prevent drug abuse.

“Sands China is very pleased that we were able to work together with the Social Welfare Bureau
to bring this seminar to our team members,” said Sam Chongnin, vice president of corporate
communications and community affairs for Venetian Macau Limited. “With this seminar, I hope
team members can play a part in helping reduce the negative impact of drug abuse and even
reach out to those who might need assistance.”

The event featured a video screening based on true stories from Macao and a discussion on
drugs, followed by a Q&A session.

One of the participating team members said: “We as parents are concerned about the social
issues faced by teenagers nowadays. This seminar taught me invaluable lessons and helped
me understand the importance of protecting our children from drug abuse.”

Sands China views its team members as its greatest asset, and holding Wednesday’s seminar
is part of the company’s long-term commitment and focus on the well-being of its team
members and the local community.

Some ideas about drugs use and abuse

A drug is any substance (with the exception of food and water) which, when taken into
the body, alters the body’s function either physically and/or psychologically. Drugs may be legal
(e.g. alcohol, caffeine and tobacco) or illegal (e.g. cannabis, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin).

Depressants, sometimes referred to as downers, are drugs that decrease alertness by slowing
down the activity of the central nervous system (e.g. heroin, alcohol and analgesics).

Stimulants, sometimes referred to as uppers, are drugs that increase the body's state of arousal
by increasing the activity of the brain (e.g. caffeine, nicotine and amphetamines).

People use drugs for a variety of reasons. Some of these include:

- To have fun, relax, forget problems or as a form of escapism

- To gain confidence and socialise

- Out of curiosity

- To lessen inhibitions

- To remove personal responsibility for decisions

- To celebrate or commiserate

- To relieve boredom and stress.

- Self-medication to cope with problems.

Why people abuse drugs?

As humans, it is in our nature to take risks and experiment. People have experimented with
drugs for centuries in rituals, for cultural, social and medical reasons. Young people today will
experiment with drugs for a number of reasons.

What are the consequences of drugs?

Drug use can impact on your physical and mental health. It can also lead to social problems and
have negative effects on relationships with family and friends. As some drugs are illegal, there
can also be legal ramifications associated with drug use.
Conclusion

That there are several factors leading to addiction. Some of the most common ones are, if one
has a genetic predisposition, then there is a high possibility of falling for substance abuse.
Another reason is trying to escape a tragic experience or stress. An easy access to cheap and
commonly available drugs or cues like going to bar with friends also contribute to forming an
addictive behavior. Nonetheless, if a person sees someone in the family history, like mother,
father, or uncle taking drugs, alcohol, or going for compulsive behaviors like gambling, or betting
sort of things, he/she is most likely to inherit that addiction,

That If use and abuse have different causes, it follows that they are likely to benefit from
different types of interventions, so it is important to further explore the hypothesis that any type
of drug use at the work site in fact reflects abuse.

Usually, in treating the addiction, preventive measures involve therapy and use of medications.
But, taking these measures is only possible when there is acceptance of problem instead of
denial. Family support plays a crucial role because the addict may need a lot of emotional and
psychological support during the withdrawal stage. It is important to create a clean and drug-
free surrounding and this may happen by hospitalizing the patient, confining him to a therapy
center for some time. Various support groups help a lot in overcoming the addiction. The
therapists also explain to the concerned person, the reasons and special situations which trigger
his impulse for drugs. This helps the person in observing and curbing his behavior in future.

Addiction is an involuntary process. It may not be fair to associate a person’s addictive behavior
with his moral standards or character. The brain response to an addict changes in such a way
that he continues to live with the bad habits and addictions in spite of understanding its
dangerous implications. Apart from therapy and medicines, the person requires a lot of love,
affection, support, and motivation to get over with the addiction.

The drug addiction in youth today is a world-wide problem and more common than one can
imagine. Teens are trying alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes, and heroin etc. even before they have
turned 15. Just like any adult addict, the brain-working and neuron patterns of young drug
addicts also show the same changes. Once the drugs and substance abuse take over their
mind, their personality gradually begins to deform in a very strange way. Teens constitute an
important part of our society. Imagining them to fall into the trap of substance abuse at such
young age only points towards the seriousness of this issue.
The most common causes of drug addiction in youth are mainly an urge to experiment and
experience something new. Then, there is peer pressure, lack of communication between
parents and teens, low self-esteem, and a tendency towards seeking pleasure. Genetics and
family history of substance abuse also contributed to drug addiction in teenagers. After trying
the drugs once, the cycle goes on. It becomes an involuntary process and giving in to the
harmful urges becomes a natural habit. The biggest reason behind the inability of our young
ones to get out the drug addiction is denial and secrecy amongst both teens and their parents.

Talking about the effects of drug addiction in youth, the list goes on to a great length. A long
exposure to habit-forming substance abuse gives birth to poor memory, low self-confidence,
serious health troubles, and even violent behaviors. The addicted teenagers are also more
prone to having accidents, mood swings, poor sleep, and developing psychological disorders
like schizophrenia and bipolar syndrome. The drug abuse may happen at a crucial time of their
career-making and ruin the future despite having brilliant talents. The regret, however, may not
always be reversible, leading to mental breakdown and suicidal tendencies in the teenagers.

The first and foremost step towards dealing with drug addiction in youth is recognizing the
denial mode and getting it out of the way. A healthy and supportive atmosphere of trust and love
is a must between the parents and their young ones. For parents, blaming themselves or their
kids is of no help. Instead, opting to meet a therapist, taking their teens and visiting a self-help
center along with effective medicines may really do wonders. Parents also need to be vigilant of
any such friends or relatives who themselves are suffering from addiction, as they may act as
triggers and damage all the efforts being made. Maintaining a distance with such persons and
unhealthy surroundings is equally essential during the whole process.

Our young ones are the future of our society. Watching them fall into this dark pit of drug
addiction is the last thing that we need. With the help of open communication, observation, and
positive mindset, we as adults can prevent such cases. Nonetheless, in case of drug abuse,
there should not be any need to feel ashamed and helpless. Delaying the treatment worsens the
case. That is why, once the drug abuse in the youth is confirmed, it is better to take prompt
steps and receive help from self-help groups and therapists.

In such times, when drug addiction is emerging as one of the most common and harmful
problems in our youth, searching for proper and effective solutions to drug addiction is the need
of the hour. Drug addiction cannot be get ridden of overnight. It is a long process and requires
the support of the addict’s family and friends at various levels like emotionally, physically,
mentally, and psychologically. Through step by step treatments and therapies, one can
successfully get out of the dark traps of drug abuse and eventually start a fresh and healthy life.

The solutions to drug addiction can only be found when the reasons have been discovered.
Especially among teens, the basic and usual reasons behind substance abuse are seen to be a
mere curiosity, experiments, peer pressure. However, the most substantial cause is having a
genetic predisposition to drug abuse. That means, if the person has a family history of drug
addiction then the teenager can easily fall for the same addiction. The other reasons include
stress, lack of communication, inability to cope up with other kinds of pressures, etc. Only after
understanding the cause, we could begin the effective treatment of the concerned person.

Needless to say, the effects of drug addiction are disastrous. A long-term exposure to
substance abuse initiates a chain of other severe problems. The first thing that happens is
feeling guilt and shame all the time. The drug addiction plays with the wiring of the nervous
system. It can cause more stress and lead to serious depression. Apart from social isolation, it
never stops to just one addiction. In fact, there are high chances of one substance abuse
leading to newer ones. Both mental and physical health of the person is severely affected and
more delay in getting the treatment may mean lesser effectiveness of the treatment.

It has been observed that creating a healthy and safe environment for the young people is
important. This may mean staying away from even those family members, friends, or relatives
who themselves are stuck into the addiction. Open communication between parents and young
ones plays a crucial role. It is important to not judge the teenagers who are into drug addiction.
An intelligent way to curb this issue is to create a movement in the society by conducting
awareness sessions at schools, colleges, and social institutions, which would explain the
harmful effects of drugs and other narcotics.

Medicines are necessary to make the treatment effective. Psychological therapies work well in
the minds of the drug addict and gradually helps in creating more self-confidence in the youth.
Parents of those youth who are into drug addiction should be well-aware of the withdrawal
symptoms so that they are prepared from before itself and know how to handle such situations.
For a young and healthy society, strict steps should be taken in order to control and eliminate
the supply and transactions of such harmful elements. Special measures need to be taken to
prevent the young ones to have any kind of access to these drugs.
Recommendation

Conducting seminars trainings drug education programs in the community may help the people
to become aware and fully educated about the cause and the consequence of drug usage in our
society. Also the parental guidance is the best way on the prevention of drug use and abuse
that’s why I recommend the strong guidance of the parent on their child.
