PROCEDURES
In making our simple distillation model, first, we brainstormed and get ideas
on how to do it on the internet. Second, we gathered all the ideas that we have
searched to visualize how the model would look like. For the third procedure, we
then searched for the materials that we will use for the project.
Fourth, we started doing the base. Our group used the ¼ illustration board
to serve as the base for the whole model. The bamboo skewers are treated as a
stand for the plastic bottle which will act as the container of the boiling water.
Meanwhile, the bamboo stick on top will function as the thermometer in the
model.
Fifth, we made a new stand, using the skewers, for the tube to stand that
serves as the passageway of the distilled fluids. To create the passageway, we
used a cylindrical cardboard and straws. To keep the straws in place, we pinned
it using toothpicks inside the cylindrical cardboard.
Next, we put small holes in some parts of the cylindrical cardboard wherein
we inserted the tubes that will allow the distilled liquid to pass through. We placed
a small container to hold the distilled water coming out on the other end of the
model. For the last procedure, we started designing the project by coloring the
base of the model using markers and poster paints.

ANALYSIS
The process assigned for our group to create a model is the process of
Simple Distillation. In this process, a mixture is heated to change the most vaporous
component from a liquid into vapor. The vapor rises and passes into a condenser.
Usually, the condenser is cooled to promote condensation of the vapor, which is
collected.
In Chemistry, there is an another type of distillation that purifies water better
than simple distillation and can separate more complex compounds and
mixtures, which is the fractional distillation. This is one of the improvements that we
can suggest in purifying substances although, fractional distillation has a more
complicated set up than simple distillation and takes up more energy and time
for liquids to distill.
Furthermore, for an improved results of distilled substances, we looked for
some factors in the materials used in some model apparatus that can possibly
affect the quality of distilled liquids. We suggest that the liquids must be free from
metallic contamination, because most of the distillation apparatus are
constructed in metal or stainless steel tubes, thus making the purified liquids
vulnerable to contamination.
Typically, simple distillation is more preferable due to its easier set up and
faster distillation. In fact, the process of distillation is applied in a lot of aspects in
human’s everyday life. This is not only used for water purification but also to
scientific uses, which is regularly used in chemical and pharmaceutical research,
alcoholic beverages, petroleum products, production of perfumes and food
flavorings. Through these aspects, it is evident that the process of distillation
greatly helps to improve human’s quality of life.
