Chapter 5

Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

Chapter 5 consists of three parts, namely: (1) Summary

of the Problems, Methods, and Findings; (2) Conclusions;

and (3) Recommendations.

Part One, Summary of the Problems, Methods and

Findings; presents the summary, methods used, and findings

obtained from the results of the study.

Part Two, Conclusions, states the generalizations that

have been formulated after the results and the findings

have been analyzed and interpreted.

Part Three, Recommendations, offers some suggestions

on the application of the findings of the study. It also

presents possible areas for future research that may be

undertaken by interested individuals.

Summary of the Problems, Methods and Findings

The survey – correlational research design was used in

this study to determine the level of mastery of

mathematical rules of Grade 9 students in relation to their

mathematical ability of Dulangan National High School for

the school year 2017 - 2018.

51

Specifically, it sought to answer the following

questions:

1. What is the level of mastery of mathematical rules

of Grade 9 students?

2. What is the level of mathematical ability of Grade

9 students?

3. Is there significant difference in the mathematical

ability of Grade 9 students when they are classified

according to their mastery of mathematical rules?

4. Are there significant relationships among students’

mathematical ability and mastery of mathematical rules?

The participants of this study were the one hundred

twenty-six (126) samples taken from a total population of

one hundred eighty-five (185) Grade 9 students of Dulangan

National High School.

Data in this study were gathered using a 26-items

composed of 5-problem solving researcher’s made test to

determine the mastery of mathematical rules and

mathematical ability of students. As recommended by Prof.

Exequiel A. Calimutan, the researcher prepared 5-items

problem solving test wherein each step or procedure in each

problem has required mathematical rules. After the

questionnaire was faced and content validated, the

questionnaire was pilot tested to ten (10) students who

52

were not participants in the study. The result of the pilot

testing was used in determining the computer-processed

factor analysis, construct validation, and reliability

testing of the research instrument using the Statistical

Package for Social Science (SPSS) software.

The independent variable covered in this study was the

mastery of mathematical rules of students. The dependent

variable was limited to the students’ mathematical ability.

The statistical tools that were used in data analyses

are frequency count, percentage, mean, standard deviation,

One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Pearson r. All

inferential tests were set at .05 alpha level of

significance.

Based on the results, the major findings of the study

are the following:

1. The level of Mastery of Mathematical Rules of Grade

9 students is “high”.

2. The level of mathematical ability of Grade 9

students is “high”.

3. There is a significant difference in the

mathematical ability of Grade 9 students when they are

classified according to their mastery of mathematical

rules.
53

4. There are significant relationship among students’

mathematical ability and mastery of mathematical rules.

Conclusions

In view of the findings, the following conclusions

were formulated:

1. The level of Mastery of Mathematical rules of Grade

9 students is high. This concludes that the teachers must

continue their teaching strategies in Mathematics Subject

because it is effective. The .

2. The “high” level of Mathematical ability of the

Grade 9 students illustrates that they

3. The result that there is a significant difference

in the mathematical ability of Grade 9 students when they

are classified according to their mastery of mathematical

rules shows that they

4. The result that there is significant relationship

among students’ mathematical ability and mastery of

mathematical rules concludes that these two factors are

Recommendations
54

Based on the stated conclusions, the following

recommendations were suggested:

1. Since the level of the Mastery of mathematical

rules of the Grade 9 students is “high”. The students may

still use their preferred studying skills in learning their

Math subject because they are effective. The students may

also join at various activities at school like MTAP class,

Math Investigatory Projects and Quiz Bee organized at their

school or at their District, Regional and National level.

The Mathematics teachers may conduct and attend at

various seminars about mathematical rules and mathematical

ability development to constantly update the knowledge that

they have about mathematics and they can also participate

in a regional or national conference to level up the math

lessons that they deliver at class.

The principals and school supervisor may organized and

conduct various enrichment activities like mathematical

skill enhancement seminar and teaching strategies program.

They can also provide more learning materials at school

that can develop a globally competitive students.

The parents may provide additional learning materials

at home to further enrich the knowledge of the students

about mathematics and they can enroll their kids in an

extracurricular activities like mathematics quiz bee, MTAP

class and Math investigatory projects.

the students is “high”. The students can still use their

4. Since the result showed that there are significant

relationship among students’ mathematical ability and

mastery of mathematical rules, the students can still use

their preferred studying skills in learning their Math

subject because they are effective. The students may also

The future researchers are recommended to conduct

similar studies to be conducted in other schools to check

the veracity of the results. They can also adapt this study

to serve as their basis in enriching their mathematical

knowledge.
