 This Wed., 2/12, is Family Fun Night at Panda Express. with automaticity. Here are a couple of excellent links that

Curriculum News
 LANGUAGE ARTS: This week we will wrap up our fifth unit, Advancements in Technology. We will focus on text
features in passages and how they contribute to our understanding of the text. We will also read an ambitious article that
covers audio technologies, From Phonograph to Playlist. At the end of the week, students will take a unit-end
assessment. NOTE the special Valentine’s Day Secret Admirer letter writing assignment this Thursday evening.
A note with special stationery and envelope will go home Thursday. THE COMPLETED COMPLIMENTARY
LETTER IS ABSOLUTELY DUE IN CLASS THE NEXT MORNING ON FRIDAY. We will also have a Valentine
exchange the afternoon of 2/14 for those students who choose to bring them. Attached is a class list so that your child
can address the envelopes. We encourage all students to bring in a decorated Valentine collection box or a bag of some
sort to hold and carry home the Valentines they receive. Lang. Arts homework is due Thursday. Spelling Words this
week are words with inflectional endings, -ed and –ing: carried, creating, relied, taking, changed, introduced,
sharing, and using. Writers’ Workshop: This week we will wrap up miscellaneous process pieces and begin our
research/informative writing genre, presidential reports (see below).
 MATH: Please review the enclosed math test on Module 3 Lessons 8-15 and return it by Wednesday. This week we
will complete lessons 19-21 as we focus on two–step word problems and place value.
 SOCIAL STUDIES: As we delve into the informative writing genre, students will be assigned a U.S. president on which
to report. For the next two to three weeks, students will research and take notes using a variety of resources at school.
 SCIENCE AND PERFORMING ARTS: Over the next three and a half weeks of school, we will be spending dedicated
time on our Vacation on Mars rehearsals. One of the main objectives of our performance is to instill a deeper
knowledge of the solar system. We are encouraging our student-performers to extract as much as possible from the
lyrics and text in the play.
 ART DOCENTS: Thanks to Mrs. Woolf and Mrs. Law who will launch our parent-led visual arts program this week.

Tips that Come in Handy for All Types of Public & Performative Speaking

 Speak loudly--people should be able to hear you from the back of a crowded classroom.
 Pace yourself--do not speak too fast. Do not speak too slowly either. Speak naturally.
 Speak clearly--enunciate every syllable of every word!
 Use expression and inflection in your voice! Emphasize important words, use “voices” and
“accents” when appropriate.
 Use expressive body language and gestures--speak using your eyes, face and body. Shrug
your shoulders and/or use your hands. Natural is better than contrived.
 Look at your audience--have strong, confident eye contact!
