The Likha Gold Medal Award

Likha Gold Medal Award is the highest distinction to be bestowed upon a fellow, who has adhered to the highest
standards of professional and ethical conduct, practiced in excellence and prestige the architectural profession, has
rendered distinguished contribution and service to the UAP, and has performed exceptional achievements and active
participation in the concern of the community, government and country.

Froilan L. Hong, fuap (11th Likha Awardee), 2013

Date Bestowed: April 18, 2013 during the 39th UAP National Convention held at SMX Convention Center, Pasay City

Having continued and sustained the momentum gained by the Founding Fathers of the integration of the three
architectural organizations into the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP), the recognition of which by the Union
Internationale des Architectes (UIA) as the National body of Architects in the Philippines came during his term as
National president of the UAP in 1988; Undertaking relevant researches and studies that provided valuable guide and
inputs to keep the Architects’ National Code and Professional Practice dynamic and relevant to its time; Working on
institutionalizing the Architect’s Continuing Education Program and pushing for continuous training for excellence
before, during and after his term as National President; Actively working on the curriculum development of
architectural schools, who, working in tandem with another Likha Awardee Dean Geronimo V. Manahan, has
produced guidelines, manuals, articles and researches on Passive Cooling Design, Climate Design, and Man-
Environment Synergy, which were later to become the foundation of Green Architecture; Experimenting and applying
the results of his researches in all his projects, be it a space for slum dwellers or settlements for informal settlers,
medium-rise condominiums, chapels, churches and shrines, hospitals, educational institutions and retrofitting
projects; Highlighting the capability of a Filipino Professional when he was tapped by the UNDP-IRRI team of experts
to prepare the Master Plan for the “China National Rice Research Institute” in Hangzhou, China in 1983; Wogether
with Dean Asteya M. Santiago as Director, and he as Deputy Director of the Bases Conversion Program, he
demonstrated innovativeness in harnessing the expertise of 37 Filipino firms in producing in record time the Master
Plan for the Bases Conversion Program during the time of President Corazon C. Aquino and at the same time
sourcing PhP 1 Billion initial fund for its implementation without incurring debt from government, and which two
decades later has evolved into the Bonifacio Global City. Pioneering on scientific probing of retrofitting projects called
Forensic Architecture which he applied in his retrofitting works for the Asian Development Bank Headquarters in
Ortigas Center in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila; Pursuing a higher, fuller view of man as Spirit, Soul and Body
through his active involvement in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal that gave him new insights and approach in
Architecture and Planning for the preservation of life and everything that supports life; NOW THEREFORE: For all
these accomplishments worthy of emulation and deserving the highest recognition, the UAP National Board acting on
the recommendation of the UAP Jury of Fellows and in accordance with the UAP By-Laws, has unanimously
approved to give the highest distinction that may be bestowed by the National Board upon a Fellow of the United
Architects of the Philippines.

Norberto M. Nuke, fuap (10th Likha Awardee), 2009

Citation:

In recognition of his exceptional, multi-faceted career as Architect, Professor, Mentor, and Guardian, delivered to
country and community in the highest standard of professional excellence and ethics; For being one among the
courageous Founding Fathers in spearheading the integration of three disparate and conflicting organization of
architects: the League of Philippine Architects (LPA), Philippine Institute of Architects (PIA) and the Association of
Philippine Government Architects (APGA) into the unity of architectural professionals, the United Architects of the
Philippines (UAP) that today, is recognized, honoured, and of enviable stature attained thru years of continuing
growth and development following the integration. For taking on the unenviable task of leading the UAP as President
of the constituted National Board of Directors composed of the Joint Boards of LPA, PIA and APGA, during UAP’s
most critical first year of existence, stabilizing the delicate and newly formed alliances and directing the eyes of all
towards one more important step - the election of UAP’s First National Board of Directors. It is this leadership and
resolve that further contributed to the distinction attained by UAP of being the first professional organization to be
accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission; For his foresight in establishing the organizational system
that made the UAP operational: the appointment of regional coordinators and committee chairpersons across the
breadth of the country that serve as access points for members to the nationwide network of the UAP; his unwavering
involvement in the mentorship of architects thru the UAP Professional Development Center to engender excellence in
the practice of the profession among architects; For his invaluable contribution in the creation of the Architect’s
National Code 1979; for bringing to fruition the By-Laws of the College of Fellows and its Implementing Rules and
Regulations which objectively define how policies, procedures and activities of the College of Fellows are managed;
as well as his leadership in upgrading and updating UAP Document 201 on Pre-Design Services, defining in detail,
what constitutes the service, the manner of delivery and compensation for the service; For his visionary guardianship
as Member of the Technical Panel, Advisory Council, Board of Advisers; Consultant, or Lead Architect of large
government policy-making bodies, such as the Department of Education, Culture and Sports, Construction Industry
Authority of the Philippines, Department of Trade and Industry, Committees of the Metro Manila Commission, now
evolved as the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, the Philippine Council for Planning and Housing, the
National Commission for Disabled Persons, the Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines and the
Professional Regulation Commission; For his wealth of research works and manuscripts, published and unpublished
with topics ranging from Architectural Programming, Economic Feasibility and Financing, to Health Delivery Systems,
Hospital Programming and PERT/CPM for Architects; and the UAP-PDC Publication for Professional Continuing
Education ACE module series 1631; For his sensitive grasp of the complexities in the practice of the profession of
Comprehensive Architectural Service, through his awareness of the dynamics of human needs, culture, technology
and the environment, for which he was awarded Most Outstanding Technological Professional in Architecture by the
Philippine Federation of Professional Associations of the Philippine Technological Council; For his vital role in the
timeless built architecture that is reflective of his technical expertise, his adherence to honesty of design and his
passion for order and system, all skillfully woven into buildings serving institutional, commercial and industrial use,
constructed in the country and the United States; And for all of these distinguished accomplishments worthy of the
emulation of his peers, an inspiration to the new generation of Architects, and most deserving recognition through the
bestowal of the highest distinction upon a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the
UAP By-Laws, and the unanimous approval of the UAP National Board.

Edilberto F. Florentino, fuap (9th Likha Awardee), 2006

Citation:

For having contributed significantly to the attainment of the highest standards of ethical conduct and excellence in the
practice of the architectural profession in his conscientious identification of the essential functions in defining
purposes and objectives as the basic source of ingenious concepts of creating space in unity to an organized
whole; for the impeccable record of loyalty and exceptional service to the organization when he initiated the formation
and dynamic involvement in the Panel of Negotiators and paved the way to the formal establishment of the United
Architects of the Philippines; for having achieved a marked professional excellence in four areas of proficiency as
architect, environmental planner, inventor and arbitrator; for having exemplified a rare kind of leadership and
outstanding management style when he served as Chancellor of the prestigious UAP College of Fellows; for having
demonstrated his vision, leadership and unrelenting vigor and zeal for taking significant role on matters of legislation
and codes for the past thirty years leading to the crafting of the Republic Act No. 9266, known as The Architecture
Act of 2004; for serving with distinction, enthusiasm and commitment in support of the national organization as
Member of the UAP Task Force on Standards of Professional Practice; for having led the UAP’s professional and
cohesive interaction with allied professional organizations, thereby projecting the UAP as a lead professional,
technical organization, when he served as Director of the Confederation of Filipino Consultants (COFILCO),
Treasurer and Director of the Council of Consulting Architects and Planners of the Philippines (CCAPP), and one of
the Incorporators of Chamber of Real Estate and Builders Association, Inc. (CREBA); for having made notable
contributions to his community, his government and country, by his active endeavors through the Rotary Club
organization, having served as President of Rotary Club, Metro SFDM, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International
Foundation, Director of Diego Silang Lions Club, Director of Premier Lions Club of QC, and President of Rang-ay,
Ilocano Businessmen Professional Assocation, Grand Knight of Knights of Columbus Council 6183 and 15-year
Monarch of Lions Club International, and by his continuing professional participation in government when he was
appointed as Member of the Board of Architecture; for his brilliant feat as an arbitrator when he was accredited and
trained as Arbitrator of the Construction Industry Arbitration Commission; for having invented innovative building
technologies which led to twelve approved patents for Hyperbolic Paraboloids, Slabs on Plunger Files, Light Steel
Cladded R.C. Core Building Frames, Mini-pile Bulbed Footings, Modular Lighweight Concrete and Thin Shell Barrel
Vaults, which he has successfully applied in government and private projects, residential, commercial and industrial,
schools and hospitals, churches and mausoleums, resorts and theme parks, complexes and for having unselfishly
shared this expertise with local and international national conventions and fora; and for all the distinguished
accomplishments worthy of emulation and deserving the most exalted recognition for the bestowal of the highest
distinction upon a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the UAP By-laws; upon
endorsement of the College of Fellows and the unanimous concurrence of the UAP National Board.

Geronimo V. Manahan (8th Likha Awardee), 2005

Date Bestowed: April 1, 2005 during the 31st UAP National Convention held at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila
Hotel.

Citation:

In recognition of his exceptional practice as a professional and exemplary performance as an Architect and
Environmental Planner, an excellent and much admired Mentor and his unparalleled contributions to the improvement
of Building Technology and Research in the fields of his professions: For his scholarly and disciplined approach to
architectural design and urban planning, his work displaying an extensive consciousness of the relationship of art and
architecture with the workings of technology, nature, humanity, culture and society; For his contributions to the
development of Building Technology and Research by spearheading studies in passive cooling technologies, the use
of non-conventional energy in buildings, among others; For being instrumental in the evolvement of the various
building codes and ordinances and his invaluable assistance to the Philippine Government as technical consultant to
the Metro Manila Development Authority, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Tourism,
the Department of Trade and Industry, the National Economic Development Authority, the Housing and Land Use
Regulatory Board among others; For unselfishly sharing his expertise to the United Architects of the Philippines, as a
member of the “think tank” group of the UAP during its formative years and as adviser to the organizations founding
fathers, as the UAP’s first National Executive Vice-President and as Scribe and Chancellor of the UAP College of
Fellows and Honorary Secretary of the Architects Regional Council Asia; and for distinguished contributions in
initiating the Continuing Education Program of the Professional Development Center; For his active participation in
other organizations, being one of the founders of the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP) and the
Council of Consulting Architects and Planners (CCAP); being member and past officer of the Confederation of Filipino
Consultants. (COFILCO), member of the board of Construction Industry Authority of the Philippines (CIAP); the
Chairman of the Philippine Domestic Construction Board (PDCN); For remarkable and prestigious merits and
recognition bestowed upon his person as fellow of the UAP, the PIEP and ARCASIA; recipient of the Most
Outstanding Professional in Architecture from the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations and the
Professional Commission, the Mabini Medal as Architect/Builder of the Year by the Philippine Foundation for the
Rehabilitation of the Disabled, Patnubay sa Sining at Kalinangan for Architecture from the City of Manila, Outstanding
Architect of the United Architects of the Philippines, and Most Outstanding Professional in Environmental Planning
from the Professional Regulation Commission, among others; For his unembellished and above-board ethical
conduct, and a reputation built on sincere and generous service; And for all of these distinguished accomplishments
worthy of the emulation of his peers and deserving recognition through the bestowal of the highest distinction upon a
FELLOW of the United Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the UAP By-Laws, and the unanimous
approval of the UAP National Board.

Francisco T. Manosa (7th Likha Awardee), 2003

Date Bestowed: April 11, 2003 during the 29th UAP National Convention held at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila
Hotel.

Citation:

For having contributed to the attainment of the highest standard of ethical conduct in the practice of the architectural
profession, for being the exponent of PHILIPPINE ARCHITECTURE, and whose works depict a continuous search
and development of “Filipino Architecture” both in traditional and modern sense; For having achieved excellence in
the development of indigenous architecture , looking and working on other inventors in creating new materials for
architecture and interior design as exemplified in the famous “Tahanang Pilipino” popularly known as the Coconut
Palace, not only as a showcase of Philippine Architecture and form but a repository of new materials such as the
shell and stone craft : a mainstream in Philippine industry, as well as Philippine Culture, heritage and integrity; For
continuously and painstakingly developing Philippine Identity in Architecture locally and internationally as shown in
his Pearl Farm resort in Davao and the “Amanpulo Resort” in Palawan both of which are world class resorts that
imbibe the culture and character of the Filipino. For having contributed in the promotion of the rich culture of the
Philippines through the use of indigenous materials in almost all his projects especially in his very own residence, the
“Bahay na Bato” which has become a tourist attraction both local and international; thus leading to the design of
several Philippine pavilions in the Seville Exposition, Berlin Exposition, Seoul Travel fair and London World Travel
Market. For setting the pace for a landscaped building collaboratively with his siblings, the well known Manosa
brothers: Jose, Manuel and himself as design architects of the San Miguel Corporation Complex in Pasig City, the
first of its kind. For having achieved a marked excellence in the design of numerous landmarks through his forty nine
years of high ethical standards of professional practice reflecting a distinct architectural style: a truly “Filipino
Character, Culture and Heritage” that meet the modern requirement of the clientele: For having made notable
contribution in his organization, community and country by his numerous design excellence awards and merits in the
field of architecture, interior design, tourism and religious organizations. For his untiring and unselfish Lecture Series
on Philippine Architecture and Culture in almost all architectural schools in the Philippines and neighboring Asian
countries. And For all these distinguished accomplishment worthy of the emulation of his peers and deserving
recognition through the bestowal of the highest distinction upon a FELLOW of the United Architects of the Philippines
in accordance with the UAp By-laws, and the unanimous approval of the UAp National Board.

Angel Lazaro, Jr., fuap (6th Likha Awardee), 2000

Date Bestowed: April 14, 2000 during the 25th UAP National Convention.

Citation:
For having successfully fused in his person, the professions of architecture and civil-engineering, topping both
licensure examinations given by the Board of Civil Engineering and the Board of Architecture of these professions in
1938 and in 1962, respectively; for having loved architecture with such passion that no years in engineering would
quench, which drove him to pursue the profession of architecture even after 25 years in the profession of
engineering; for having achieved technical excellence in the architectural and engineering design of innumerable
landmark projects, built in half a century of dedicated practice, that demonstrated his independence of mind in
conceptualization, proficiency in design, and boldness in the execution of the projects in construction; for having
demonstrated a rare kind of leadership and management style when he served as National President of the United
Architects of the Philippines, which was characterized by warmth, friendliness, informality, closeness and intimacy;
expressed through personal letters written to thousands of members and through arduous travels to visit all the
chapters of the organization all over the country; the likes of which the members had not known and experienced
before, and for which he is now remembered and admired; for having performed with exceptional vigor, strength and
resolve as Chancellor of the College of Fellows of the United Architects of the Philippines, in leading not only the
architects but all other Filipino professionals, as Task Force Chair of the Philippine Federation of Professional
Associations and the Philippine Technological Council, in the lobby for better laws, rules and regulations for the
professionals in the country with regards to such issues as continuing professional education and membership to the
accredited professional organization; for having projected the architect as a reliable partner and ally, amongst other
professionals, by leading the Confederation of Filipino Consulting Organizations as the umbrella organization of all
domestic consultants; for being the epitome of the health professional – with a healthy mind and a healthy spirit on a
healthy body; even as he had reached the ripe eighth decade of his life on earth.

Manuel T. Manosa, fuap (5th Likha Awardee), 1996

Date Bestowed: April 11, 1996 during the 21st UAP National Convention.

Citation:

In recognition and highest regard for his exemplary adherence to the Architects’ Code of Ethics, standing out as a
gentleman of the ultimate and impeccable degree of integrity, honesty and his unquestionable devotion to what is
right, fair and honorable, for which he is well known in the industry and the society, his colleagues, associates,
subordinates, contractors, clients, and the general public; For the exemplary testaments of his practise as an
Architect and an Environmental Planner since 1951 marked with identity of style in the residential structures by the
use of materials and forms, blending and adapting to the immediate environment, use of lofty roofs of cuatro agues
with wooden fascias trimmed with simplified Filipino motif designs; expression of Filipino cultural elegance and way of
life by the provision of specific features in designs applicable to specific cases in accord and compliment to the client
and users of the spaces which transcends also to the design of edifices and schools, resorts, and neighborhoods and
communities; for the belief that straightforward, simple and honest solutions to the humane needs of activities in
space with the innovative utilization of the latest and tested in technology as a basic thrust in the conceptualization of
ideas; for the integrated approach to the planning of developments for communities; neighborhoods, urban and rural
places; For his selfless endeavor for the advancement of Architecture and Environmental Planner as one of the pillars
of the profession he helped in forming the United Architects of the Philippines; as one of the founders and then
Chairman of the Kanlungan Foundation for Architects since 1987; as one of the founding members of the Philippine
Institute of Environmental Planners in 1969; contributing his time and efforts fir the profession as President of the
Philippine Institute of Architect, United Architects of the Philippines and the Philippine Institute of Environmental
Planners; Chancellor of the College of Fellows of the Philippine Institute of Architects and the United Architects of the
Philippines; former Member of the Board of Architecture; for his contributions as Member of the Senate Committee on
the Building Code and helped draft the present National Building Code; For the generous support and untiring effort
in his service to his fellowmen and community in his service to the Girl Scouts of the Philippines which earned him to
Gold Service Award (1982) and the Pearl Service Award (991), his service to the Boy Scouts of the Philippines,
involvement with the men of St. Joseph, Affiliation to the Order of San Agustin; Chairman, Technical Aid, Housing
and Transportation Commission of the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled; Member, Task
Force on Accessibility, National Commission Concerning Disabled Persons; With the confirmation of all the above
attributes from the interviews made with Senator Helena Z. Benitez as Client, and Co-worker in the Senate for the
preparation of the Building Code; Gabino A. de Leon, colleague and friend, William Godinez, former school mate,
former Client (representing Soriano Enterprises); and presently co-principal and office mate in the practice of the
profession; For all the distinguished achievements worthy of the emulation and deserving the most exalted
recognition for the bestowal of the highest distinction upon a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines in
accordance with the UAP By-Laws; upon the recommendations of the UAP Committee on Awards and the Jury of the
College of Fellows and the unanimous approval of the UAP National Board.

Cesar V. Canchela, fuap (4th Likha Awardee), 1995

Date Bestowed: April 7, 1995 during the 20th UAP National Convention

Citation:

For having contributed to the attainment of the highest standard of ethical conduct and excellence in the practice of
the architectural profession, when he served as a member of the 15-man Ad Hoc Commission on Integration, and
witnessed the birth of the accredited professional organization, the Untied Architects of the Philippines, thus, became
an active participant and contributor in the great effort and process to unify all architects in the Philippines; for having
achieved a marked technical excellence in the design of numerous landmark structures he has built through forty six
years of high ethical standards of professional practice, reflecting a distinct architectural style and philosophy
deserving recognition; for having invented the patented Canchela Shelter Components and Stacking Process for
multi-story buildings which he used in his socialized housing projects, thus, contributed to the Herculean effort to give
the great mass of underprivileged and homeless poor, access to decent affordable housing; for having given
distinguished contributions and service to the UAP organization, when he served as its President and demonstrated
his vision, leadership and unrelenting vigor and zeal, by leading into the founding of the UAP-Kaligan Shelter for the
Homeless Program nationwide through UAP Chapters; has initiated all architects to join UAP through chapters of
their own choice; implementation of FOB-UAP Scholarship in Architecture; by initiating the Chapter Presidents
Assembly; responsible for the approval of UAP ACE Program by the Professional Regulation Commission; for having
led the UAP’s professional and cohesive interactions with allied professionals organizations thereby projecting the
UAP as a lead professional technical organization, which he served as President of the Confederation of Filipino
Consulting Organizations (COFILCO), Director of the Private Sector Low-Income Housing Association (PRISLIHA),
Secretary General of the Council of Consulting Architects and Planners of the Philippines (CCAPP), Coordinator
Architectural Sector of the Society of Philippine Accredited Consultants (SPAC) and Vice President of the
Architectural Center Club, Inc.; for upholding, protecting and expanding the role of the architect when he was
appointed as Chairman, Board of Architecture, Professional Regulation Commission by initiating measures, rules and
regulations, notably the establishment of the “design and construction of buildings” as the exclusive domain of
architects only; the definition of acts constituting the current practice of architecture; the removal of overlapping of the
professional realms of architecture and civil engineering; the regulation of the practice of interior design and
landscape architecture by non-architects thru specialty boards; for having made notable contributions to his
community, his government and country, by his active civic endeavours through the Rotary Club organization having
served as President of the Rotary Club of Cubao and a Paul Harris Fellows of Rotary International Foundation; and
by his community service particularly having unselfishly served as Barangay Captain of Barangay Socorro, Cubao,
Quezon City; and 2nd Lt. in the USAFFE guerilla force in Albay during the World War II and such other similar
capacities, benefiting community, government and country; and for all these accomplishments worthy of emulation
and deserving the highest recognition and upon recommendation of the UAP Committee on Awards and the
Committee on Resolutions, the UAP Board unanimously approved, to give the highest distinction that may be
bestowed by the National Board upon a FELLOW of the United Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the
UAP By-Laws.

Gabriel P. Formoso, fuap (3rd Likha Awardee), 1990

Date Bestowed: October 20, 1990 during the 16th UAP National Convention.

Citation:

For his strict adherence to the principles of the Architect’s Code of Ethics, standing out as a man of highest singular
integrity and honesty for which he has been known in the industry, with sheer determination and inspiration this
principle has been handed down to his architect-associates and partners who had worked with him and are now
independently practicing the same principles in their own right, for his professional engagements that are marked with
grave social and civic responsibility towards the public it serves, his relationship with the client was always in good
faith, safeguarding the interest of both the owners and contractors, treating the building materials suppliers as source
of technical aid rather than being imbued with vested interest, and inspiring the loyalty of his colleagues and
subordinates through his exceptional and unselfish professional behaviour; His monuments which are a product and
testaments to his genius since he started his professional career in 1939 continuing up to the present time, speak
eloquently for themselves, his distinct preference for masculine-looking rubble walls and bold-lined fascias treated in
his own inimitable way reflecting a unique style for fine suburban homes in the early fifties – such features were
largely to identify his other works, thus these edifices that are offsprings of his imagination and which now constitute
our pride in architectural symmetry, elegance and beauty are a tribute to his artistry and architectural ability which
undoubtedly has earned admiration and respect from various sectors of society; His behind-the-scene contributions
and deep concern for the advancement of the architectural profession as well as his support to the United Architects
of the Philippines has earned him the trust and confidence of his colleagues, placing in his hands the Chairmanship
of the Kanlungan Foundation for Architects, his being adjudged as the Architect of the Year by the Professional
Regulation Commission on Arts and Culture, are some of the recognition bestowed upon him; His humble gesture in
conceiving and founding the Architectural Center Club, Inc., and successfully pursuing it to realization with continued,
untinted and unselfish support of its interest through generous contribution of facilities and services, and his vision to
bring about a forum in fostering close ties among the design and building professions and the industry; His
indefatigable efforts and unwavering commitment to serve his community, untiring support in building the Simbahan
ng Ina ng Buhay, Damong Maliit, Novaliches as a gift of the community to the Blessed Mother on her 2,000th Birth
Anniversary and as a gift to the People of Novaliches, for his benevolent assistance in the construction of Sta. Rita
Formation Center, Sta. Rita de Casia Parish, Gingoog City, and for his magnanimous help towards endowing a
Professional Chair in the Humanities in honor of Rev. James F. Donelan, S.J. at the Ateneo de Manila University,
thus his enduring contribution to the cause of Christian formation of the Filipino and the development of the country;
and for all these distinguished achievements worthy of emulation and deserving the most exalted recognition, and
upon recommendation of the UAP Committee on Awards, the UAP National Board of Directors; unanimously
approved, the bestowal of the highest distinction upon a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines in
accordance with the UAP By-Laws.

Leandro V. Locsin, fuap (2nd Likha Awardee), 1987

Date Bestowed: October 15, 1987 during the 13th UAP National Convention.

For having contributed significantly to and influenced the development of Philippine Architecture through his practice
of the architectural profession conducted in the highest standard of ethical conduct and excellence, a practice
acclaimed to be phenomenal and unparalled by any Filipino architect, a practice that brought new impetus and vigour
to the Filipino Architects’ ingenuity, originality, sensitivity, audacity and style; for having shown the way for others to
emulate deep concern and selflessness, in actively giving consistent, distinguished contributions and service to
National Architectural Organizations prior to and up to the unification of the 3 architecture organizations into the
United Architects of the Philippines which he has served with humility and steadfastness in various leadership
capacities; for having attained an enviable professional reputation hailed throughout the world no less recognized by
any honorary fellowship to the American Institute of Architects; a Pan Pacific Architectural Citation for consistent
excellence in design by the AIA Hawaii Chapter after the barely seven years into practice, a Prof. R. Gordon Brown
Memorial Lectureship by the School of Architecture, University of Hongkong; a book by Nicholas Polites, published by
John Weatherhill, Inc., a feature in “Contemporary Architects” as the only Filipino in a gigantic compilation of the
world’s 15, 400 leading architects; features in international books and magazines such as Ugo Kulterman’s
“Architects of the Third World,” Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, Arts and Architecture, House and Garden,
Progressive Architecture, Interiors, Connoseiur, Architekten der Ditten Weld, Reader’s Digest (USA), Space Design,
Japan Architect, Vogue Living (Australia) and La Francaise; for having deserved such unprecedented recognition
from his grateful countrymen beginning with a TOYM Awards to the numerous other awards in
architectural/professional and academic fields which the private and government organizations could bestow on him;
for having exemplified the total Filipino artist and the noble spirit of a true Renaissance man as manifested by his
affinity with the other Arts such as music, painting, sculpture, dance, stage and archaeology; for having shared his
bounty and humanity through his philanthropic foundation for arts and science, community development and
assistance to the underprivileged; a foundation which since 1972 had supported close to a thousand high school
scholarships for the underprivileged youth in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, and more than 110 college and
vocational scholarships; now offers 160 scholarships annually and support a medical clinic which handles about
16,000 cases a year; has brought spring water to barrio Sto. Niño and made efforts to improve cottage industry –
indeed a gifted individual bringing gifts to his people; and for all these accomplishments worthy of emulation and
deserving the highest recognition and upon recommendation of the UAP Committee on Awards and the Committee
on Resolutions, the UAP National Board unanimously approved, to give the highest distinction that may be bestowed
by the National Board upon a Fellow of the United Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the UAP By-Laws.

For having contributed to the attainment of the highest standard of ethical conduct and excellence in the practice of
the architectural profession, when he undertook the role of prime mover in the preparation and publication of
significant adopted professional documents such as the Architect’s National Code consisting of the Code of Ethical
Conduct and Standards of Professional Practice and UAP General Conditions, International Code of Ethics on
Consulting Services, Standard Guidelines on Consulting Services, and others, all benefiting the architectural
profession; for having achieved a marked technical excellence in the design of numerous landmark structures he has
built through forty three years of high ethical standards of professional practice, reflecting a distinct architectural style
and philosophy deserving recognition; for having given distinguished contributions and service to the UAP
organization, when he served as its President and demonstrated his vision, leadership and unrelenting vigor and
zeal, by instituting various reforms within the organization and by projecting the UAP in the international scene
leading to its recognition as a founding member of the Architects Regional Council of Asia (ARCASIA) and the
ASEAN Association for Planning and Housing (AAPH), and as national section of the Union Internationale des
Architectes in the Philippines; for having led the UAP’s professional and cohesive interactions with allied profession
organizations thereby projecting the UAP as a lead professional technical organization, when he served as President
of the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations (PFPA), Vice President of the Philippine Council for
Planning and Housing (PCPH), Vice Chairman of the Philippine Technological Council (PTC), Treasurer and Member
of the Governing Council of the ASEAN Association for Planning and Housing (AAPH) and Deputy Chairman of the
Architects Regional Council of Asia (ARCASIA); for having made notable contributions to his community, his
government and country, by his active civic endeavors through the Jaycee organization having served as Manila
Jaycee Director and Jaycee Senator, and by his continuing professional participation in government, in its physical
and planning programs particularly unselfishly serving in the Board of Advisers for Urban Design and Development of
the Metro-Manila Commission and such other similar capacities, benefiting community, government and country; and
for all these accomplishments worthy of emulation and deserving the highest recognition and upon recommendation
of the UAP Committee on Awards and the Committee on Resolutions, the UAP National Board unanimously
approved, to give the highest distinction that may be bestowed by the National Board upon a Fellows of the United
Architects of the Philippines in accordance with the UAP By-Laws.
