Online Learning Day 3 – Wednesday, February 5, 2020

English
In English, we are currently learning how to read and write
poetry. Yesterday, you learned about the 5 Elements of Poetry.
The 5 Elements of Poetry are:
1. Figurative Language
2. Imagery
3. Voice
4. Ideas & Content
5. Word Choice

Today, let’s focus on the element of Voice.

Poems are meant to be read out loud for others to hear.
Sometimes, poems may rhyme and when spoken out loud, may
even sound like a song. When you read or listen to a poem, you
might find that it makes you feel something (happiness,
sadness, anger, fear).
Activity
1. First, log into RAZ-Kids and read the poem that I have
assigned to you (Just the Wind by Ned Jensen) two times.
The first time, read it to yourself, and the second time
read it out loud to a family member or friend.
2. Answer the following questions:
a. Write down as many sets of rhyming words as you
can from the poem (e.g., “shop and stop” from page
9)
b. What words in the poem describe how the wind acts?
c. How does this poem make you feel? Do your feelings
change from the beginning of the poem to the end of
the poem?

Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are starting our unit on Communities in the
Past (1780-1850). This means we will be studying communities
that existed in Canada around 200 years ago. That’s a long time
ago!

To help us get ready to think about the past, let’s play a little
game! Below, you will find a list of events that have occurred in
the past. Do your best to put these events in order. Begin with
the event that you think happened the longest time ago.

Don’t search the internet for answers! It’s more fun if you try it
on your own first. I will post the answers on Friday!

and Subtraction. Today, we will be learning to use the standard
method for subtraction.
Please watch the following video to prepare you for today’s
work:

Please review the written explanation of the standard method
for subtraction below and complete today’s practice questions.

Science & Technology

Today’s lesson will be about the parts of a plant. You will learn
to identify different plant parts, and also to describe the
important job that each of these plant parts do.

Activity:
Watch the following BrainPOP Jr video and take the Easy Quiz
and the Hard Quiz. Then, draw a plant and label the roots,
stem, leaves, and flower.

After you finish drawing and labelling your plant, write down
the function (job) of each plant part. You might need to watch
the video again for some help.
