THE 2020 NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

I. Objectives:

The National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) will hold the 2020 National Chess
Championship series with the following objectives:

1. to crown the best Filipino Chess Player for 2020;


2. to promote the game of chess by encouraging maximum participation throughout the
archipelago;

II. Regional Qualifying Tournaments, Semi-final and final:

1. There will be 9 regional qualifying tournaments: 2 in Luzon, 2 in Visayas, 3 in


Mindanao and 2 in the National Capital Region, a semi-final, and a final event dubbed
the Battle of Grandmasters. The regional qualifying tournaments, the semi-final and
final, will be held in:

Luzon: Pangasinan – March 2020
Dasmariñas, Cavite – April 2020
Visayas: Bacolod City – May 2020
Cebu City – June 2020
Mindanao: Cagayan de Oro City – July 2020
Iligan City – September 2020
Davao City – October 2020

The NCFP reserves the right to change the location of the regional tournaments provided
that the change in location will be announced at least 30 days before the scheduled date
of the tournament.

2. Only players with the 2020 NCFP ID will be allowed to join. The Registration fee of the
regional qualifying tournaments will not exceed Php500.00. There will be no on-site
registration; all players must register at least one week before the start of the
tournament. All the tournaments of the 2020 National Chess Championship will be
FIDE and NCFP rated;

3. To encourage maximum participation, the regional qualifying tournaments will be open


to all players including masters and grandmasters and will be played during weekends
only. The tournament will be scheduled over two weekends, 4 days total and will either
be for 7 or 9 rounds depending on the number of participants;

4. The minimum time control will be 60 minutes plus 30second increment from move 1.
The NCFP’s regional partner may increase the time control to 90 minutes plus
30seconds increment provided that the tournament will be finished in two weekends.
5. To minimize the number of draws, the point system that will be used throughout the
2020 National Chess Championship including the semi-final and final will be 3 points
for a win, 1 point for a draw and 0 point for a loss.

6. The top 10 non-masters in each regional qualifying tournament will qualify for the semi-
final. The semi-final will be held in 4 straight days (Thursday to Sunday) in Metro
Manila. The registration fee for the semi-final shall not exceed Php1,000.00. All
qualifiers from the regional qualifying tournaments plus all players with titles given by
FIDE and/or NCFP may join the semi-final.

7. The top players of the semi-final may join the Grand-final. NCFP reserves the right to
choose how many of the top players will join the final (dubbed the Battle of the
Grandmasters) depending on the number of grandmasters who will join the final,
provided that the top 6 will be guaranteed to join the final. There will be no registration
fee for the final.

8. The minimum guaranteed prizes will be as follows:

a. For each regional tournament, the minimum guaranteed prizes shall be as


follows:

Champion – Php10K
2nd - Php 5K
3rd - Php 3K
4th - Php 2K
5th to 10th - Php 1K

b. For the semi-final, the minimum guaranteed prizes will be as follows:

Champion – Php 20K


2nd - Php 10K
3rd - Php 6K
4th - Php 4K
5th to 10th - Php 4K

c. For the final, the minimum guaranteed prizes will be as follows:

Champion – Php 50K


2nd - Php 30K
3rd - Php 20K
4th - Php 10K
5th to 10th - Php 5K

The minimum guaranteed prizes may be increased (but never decreased) if NCFP
and/or its regional partners can secure sponsorship agreements. The final prizes shall
be announced at least one week before the scheduled start of the tournament.

9. To increase the prize pool and defray the expenses, the NCFP is authorized to seek
private, commercial sponsors under the following parameters:

a. Name Sponsor – shall be entitled to place its name in the title of the National
Championship; shall be prominently mentioned in all tri-media and social media
reports about the championship for the entire 2020 season; logo prominently placed
in all broadcasts of the regional, semi-final and final events. Only one entity shall be
granted name sponsor status. Minimum amount of sponsorship shall be
Php300,000.00.

b. Diamond sponsors - shall be prominently mentioned as diamond sponsor in all tri-


media and social media reports about the championship for the entire 2020 season;
logo prominently placed in all broadcasts of the regional, semi-final and final events.
Only three entities shall be granted Diamond sponsor status. Minimum amount of
sponsorship shall be Php 100,000.00.

c. Gold sponsors - shall be mentioned as Gold sponsor in all tri-media and social
media reports about the championship for the entire 2020 season; logo shall be
placed in all broadcasts of the regional, semi-final and final events. Minimum
amount of sponsorship shall be Php 50,000.00.

d. Silver Sponsors - shall be mentioned as Silver sponsor in all tri-media and social
media reports about the championship for the entire 2020 season; logo shall be
placed in all broadcasts of the regional, semi-final and final events. Minimum
amount of sponsorship shall be Php 25,000.00.

The regional partners of the NCFP may also secure local sponsorship of their regional
qualifying tournament to defray expenses and increase the prize pool.
