CONCEPT NOTES
The Pythagorean Theorem states that in any right triangle, the square of the length
of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the legs.
EXAMPLE
Given the two sides of a right triangle ABC with right angle at C, find the length of
the third side.

The missing side is hypotenuse, thus The missing side is a leg, thus
𝑐 2 = 𝑎2 + 𝑏2 (𝐴𝐵)2 = (𝐵𝐶)2 + (𝐴𝐶)2
(𝐴𝐵)2 = 102 + 242 202 = 102 + (𝐴𝐶)2
(𝐴𝐵)2 = 100 + 576 400 = 100 + (𝐴𝐶)2
(𝐴𝐵)2 = 676 400 − 100 = (𝐴𝐶)2
