Agencies Responsible 1. DOST (Department of Science and Technology)


for the - the lead agency responsible for the preparation of Harmonized
Implementation of Research and Development Agenda

Research and 2. NRCP (National Research Council of the Philippines)
Development Agenda - agency composed of over four thousand researchers, scientists
2017-2022 and experts who are tasked to promote and support basic
researches in the country.

3. PCHRD (Philippine Council for Health Research and Development


- agency mandated as the national coordinating body for health
researches in the country.

4. PCIEERD (Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging


Technology Research and Development)
- the agency which aims to strengthen support in research and
development, development of human resource and institution,
diffusion of information and technology, and development of
policies.

5. PHILVOCS (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology)


- the agency which evaluates and harmonizes the agenda for
disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation; it is also
responsible for relaying messages to people about the existence
of danger and what can be done to prevent or minimize danger.

6. PAGASA (Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical


Services Administration)
- collaborates with PHILVOCS in evaluating and finalizing the
agenda for disaster risk reduction and climate change; this
agency is also responsible for giving typhoon signals and tsunami
alerts to warn people of the things to be done for their safety.

7. PCAARD (Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and


Natural Resources Research and Development)
- agency which conducts a round table consultation with the
representatives from other agencies doing R&D functions in
agriculture, aquatic and natural resources.

CHAPTER V: SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

Department of The government institution that prepared the curriculum for the
Education (DepEd) Philippine Science High School system.

Oversees the implementation of the school curricula and school


programs in both elementary and high school levels.

Philippine Science A specialized public high school system in the Philippines which
High School System operates as an attached agency of the DOST.
Commission on Higher Created as separate entity to oversee the system of higher
Education (CHED) education in the country and to formulate policies, plans and
programs for the development of public and private higher
education.

CHAPTER VI: SELECTED INDIGENOUS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGIES

Indigenous Science Product of indigenous knowledge perfected by people through life


experiences

Examples:
- Knowledge in observing animal behavior to predict weather
conditions and seasons
- Traditional health habit practices
- The use of herbal medicines
- Knowledge on preserving foods
- Preservation and selection of good seeds for planting
- Building irrigation system
- Classifying different types of soil for planting
- Making wines and juices from fruits
- Local methods of growing vegetables in the yard
- Indigenous method of calculating or estimating
- Knowledge on mineral resources found in the community

Indigenous Processes or products which are the results of studying


Technology indigenous science

Examples:
- Yoyo (Pedro Flores) – played by holding the string by
inserting one finger into a knot at its free end.
- Medical Incubator (Dr. Fe del Mundo) – purposely invented
to regulate the body temperature of newborn babies
- Erythromycin (Dr. Abelardo Aguilar) – antibiotic produced
by the bacterium Streptomyces erythreus
- Fish sauce (Ruperta David) – condiment made from salted
fish
- Banana Catsup (Maria Orosa y Ilagan) – condiment for every
fried food)
- Anti-cancer Cream (Rolando dela Cruz) – cream made from
cashew nuts and other local herbs to treat basal skin
carcinoma
- 16-bit Microchip (Diosdado Banatao) – allows computer users
to make graphical presentation using graphics for commands
- Mole Remover (Rolando dela Cruz) – cream formulated to
remove warts and moles on the skin

CHAPTER VII: HUMAN FLOURISHING

Aristotle Defined man as a rational animal because he can think and use
reason consistently.

Human flourishing Defined as an effort to achieve self-actualization and fulfilment


within the context of a larger community of individuals, each
with the right to pursue his or her own efforts.

Society An organization or aggregate of people living together with


common interest or purpose or activity

Well-being Theory Human flourishing is not only focused on the happiness of


individuals alone but also in psychological well-being.
Positive emotion Includes pleasure, rapture, ecstasy, warmth, comfort, and other
emotions that contribute to the pleasant life.

Engagement This is all about flow: being one with music, time stopping, and
the loss of self-consciousness during an absorbing activity,
experiences which contribute to the “engaged life”

Relationships The feeling of satisfaction, flourishing or well-being can be


experienced when we are in a relationship or with other people.

Meaning Belonging to and serving something that you believe is bigger


than you are; this is to prove your meaning or purpose with other
people
Accomplishment Defined as something that is successful, or that is achieved
after a lot of work or efforts
