INTRODUCTION

The common definition of student life refers to the people with a common purpose or shared duties at
an institution of higher learning. They are united for the purpose to receive an education that qualifies
them for a life profession through achievement of a college degree

Today college students face a lot of difficulties during their studies on of the major difficulty
is the decision to leave home or live hostel. While for most, hostel life spells excitement and the impending
freedom brings a lovely smile on their face, there are those for whom the anxiety of being away from
home and meeting a whole bunch of new people might prove to be scary. The day scholars on the other
hand, thank their stars that they live with their parents and do not have to deal with issues such as hostel
ragging, bad food and home sickness. For many students it may be their first experience of living away
from home. The individuals usual source of support are no longer present to facilitate adjustment to
unfamiliar environment, living in hostel with other students of different ethnic or cultural background can
present, sometimes intense problem.

The adjustment problem may effect adversely the students learning and other behaviour.
Sometimes the problems faced by the student’s leads to antisocial activities. Thus, unless the students
make the satisfactory adjustment, his normal pattern of behaviour is disrupted and it also affects all
phases of his life. If mind of college students is seriously preoccupied with problem, the effects educating
her will not yield satisfactory result. One of the main characteristic feature of living organism is that it
continuously tries to adjust with different factors of the environment.

Lack of sleep, poor eating habits and not enough exercise are a recipe for depression among
college students. The stress that comes with academic including financial worries, pressure to get a good
job after college and failed relationships is enough to force some students to leave college or worse.
Depressed students are at a greater risk of developing problems such as substance abuse. Depressed
college students are more likely to binge drink, smoke, marijuana and participate in risky sexual behaviors
to cope with emotional pain than are their non-depressed peers.
INTRODUCTION
An increasing amount of attention is being directed to transition to higher education as
experienced by traditional age and adult students. It is a movement that incorporates a great deal of stress
and challenge. Although some students are able to experience this transition as challenge to personal
growth, other students are overwhelmed by the changes and experience emotional maladjustment and
depression.
The home environment for many young people represents a place of instability and emotional upheaval
where security, caring and nurturing are depleted or non-existent. Separation, divorce, death or
abandonment removes one or both parents from the family. The lack of attention and affection that may
accompany such change adversely impacts children. Subsequent emotional and financial difficulties of a
single parent household further strain the family dynamic. Hostel life improves living condition for these
students
Issues of adjustment and general development require persistent attention by campus
professional due to immediate relevance to college success. Complex psychological histories often
underpin these problems, further complicating treatment. These difficulties are often present as an
inefficiencies in coping with familial separation, time problems and stress management ,basic study
techniques, goal setting , relationship formation, handling emotion and self-esteem, crystallization.
Personal, academic, social and professional success depends on the student’s ability to manage these
aspects of their lives.
