Flame Test

Activity 1

(Jinelle Lauren C. Sunico)

I. Objectives

 To know the color emitted after dropping hydrochloric acid and lighted by a
match
 To know the effect of hydrochloric acid to the chemicals
 To determine the physical change in chemicals

II.Materials

● Hydrochloric acid ●Potassium Nitrate

● Spatula ●Potassium Chlorate
●2 beakers ●Sodium Acetate
●2 watch glass ●Lithium Nitrate
●Alcohol ●Zinc Chloride
●2 medicine droppers ●Lithium Chlorate
●match ●Calcium Carbonate
III.Procedure

1. First, put 40ml of water to the beaker, then get the spatula with the watch
glass.
2. Using the spatula, get the assigned chemical and put it in the watch glass
3. After observing the chemical, put 8-10 drops of hydrochloric acid and
observe the physical change.
4. Using the match, light a matchstick and burn the chemical. Observe.
5. Repeat the procedures 2-4 to the other chemicals.

Notes:

a. Make sure the watch glass and spatula are clean every time you get the
chemicals.
b. Wear mask and hand gloves because hydrochloric acid is corrosive.
IV.Data Analysis

Substances Chemical found Color emitted

Potassium Nitrate KNO₃ Violet
Potassium Chlorate KCl Violet
Calcium Carbonate CaCo₃ Red/orange
Lithium Nitrate LiNO₃ Red
Sodium Acetate C₂H₃NaO₂ White
Copper Sulfate CuSO₄ Green
Zinc Chloride ZnCl₂ Orange

Guide Questions:

1. What pair of substances emitted the same color? Why do you think so?
- Potassium Nitrate and Potassium Chlorate because both emitted the
same color which is yellow after the hydrochloric acid was dropped and it
has something to do with both elements containing potassium.
2. What causes the formation of flame color?
- The sudden change in heat and pressure affect the chemical proponents
of the chemical.
3. Why is there a need to wash the spatula after use?
- To avoid the first chemical to mix with the next chemical which will
greatly affect the physical attributes.
4. If you are to make fireworks display, what chemicals are you going to use?
Why?
- Potassium Chlorate and Potassium Nitrate, Potassium nitrate is the
oxidizer in black powder, and many fireworks mixtures that are similar to
black powder while Potassium chlorate was the oxidizer first used in
true, quality color compositions. When its use was adopted in fireworks,
sometime around 1830 AD, good colored flames became possible.
Potassium chlorate is the main oxidizer in colored smoke mixtures, caps
(for toy cap guns,) pull-string crackers, among other things. It is also the
main ingredient in match heads.
V.Generalization

The purpose of this lab activity “Flame test” is to test and see what colors
and physical attributes of the chemicals used. So that we can understand what
chemicals we should use to make fireworks and to learn how fireworks work. The
experiment shows that every chemical used emits different color when mixed with
hydrochloric acid, and when put into flame. We tested different chemicals and
wrote our observations. I accomplished the practice and knowledge of testing
chemicals and making a conclusion purely based on our observation.
