Bauko, Mountain Province

Spansih Times: The town belonged to the province of Lepanto-Bontoc which explains the nomenclature Lepanto-
Igorot as distinguished from Bontoc-Igorot.

American Regime: it became a part of the sub province of Lepanto in the then newly created Mountain Province
which was subdivided along ethnic lines into seven sub provinces: Amburayan, Apayao, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga,
and Lepanto. When this Mountain Province with its seven sub province was dissolved in 1966 with the elevation of
Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga-Apayao, to the status of provinces, Bauko became municipality of the new Mountain
Province, whose capital is Bontoc.

Legend: Legend has it that the municipality was first settled by a couple named Padoka and Adian in Pabis. To
survive, the couple planted root crops to augment their provisions of food. Padoka also became a skillful hunter.

Many years thereafter, a pregnant sow of the couple was nowhere to be found in its pen. The couple,
together with their son and daughter, searched the vicinity for the missing sow. Later, Adian discovered that the sow
headed eastward via a lower dike-like mountain. They followed the footprints going to Mt. Kipay-an until they
found it in a cave at the side near the spring. The place was luxuriant with “Baukok” trees (Specie Garnica). Because
the land on which the “Baukok” grew had a friendly terrain, Padoka decided to transfer his whole family there.

Time came when there was rampant cutting down of trees by the inhabitants, who had become by then
numerous, to make houses. To perpetuate the memory of the species of trees that once abounded in the area, Opeg’s
descendants called it Baukok, which was shortened to Bauko later on for euphony. This was how Bauko got its
name.

Beliefs:
Cañao or Kanyaw- It is a socio-religious ritual where chickens, pigs and/or carabaos are butchered as a sacrifice
and feasted on. This is usually a thanksgiving to their god Kabunyan.

Gods- there are categories of the gods of the igorots Dios Adi kaila, the god which we cannot see. The creator is the
highest god.

Kabunyan-which is the son- he’s the one who execute the plan of god Adi kaila; canao are offered to him.

Anitos or the ancestral spirit - which means the spirit of those relative who pass away or malevolent ancestral spirits;
they are often called Ap-apo under superior deities by Kabunyan.

Animism- the religious belief that objects, places and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence.

Begnas- one week of celebration after planting and before they bless their crops and protects it from plagues or
insects. When the Palay is ripe, the thanksgiving rite is done (begnas). It starts with the old men shouting (giyaw).
The people meet and select man to go to the edge of the village. Some of this men holds spear while the others beat
their shield (kasay) along the way. When they reach the edge the men shout in unison. When they heard birds
answering they stick a sharpened stake into the ground and shout again. They return to their village beating their
shields for good luck. If a blackbird appeared in their path on the way to giyaw, they choose another direction.
