I. Introduction

On the Job training (OJT 500) or Internship Training is a program course for every

student to undergo training under their chosen field of specialization and industry. In this

way, the students can think of new ways to set themselves apart from all of the other skilled

candidates. Interns are usually undergraduates or students, and most internships last

between a month and three months. Internships are usually part-time if offered during a

university semester and full-time if offered during the vacation periods (wikijob.co.uk,

2018). Under the internship training program, an educational or a vocational institute enters

into an arrangement with the industrial enterprises to provide experiential knowledge to

their students (businessjargons.com/internship-training.html, 2019).

Practically, the best way to learn a specific job is through training where you ought

to get along with experienced workers in a particular trade of profession. Skills and

knowledge were passed firsthand as trainees work alongside with professionals.

Through On-the-Job Training, students will soon be equipped with the knowledge

necessary to be competent individuals practicing their chosen profession. Being exposed

to the real working environment and getting along with experienced workers, student

trainees will be ready enough to explore and think of their future endeavor.

Like other engineering programs, BS Sanitary Engineering program provides

internship training course on students in their 5th year, 1st semester as provided by CHED

Memorandum Order No. 35, Series of 2009 Curriculum for A.Y. 2016-2017:

On the other hand, the training will be the best opportunity for the engineering students to

go through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipment and documents.

In this training, student trainees acquire both general skills that they can transfer from one job to

another and specific skills that are unique to a particular job. These skills include verbal and written

instruction, demonstration and observation, and hands-on practice and imitation.

II. Objectives

To attain position in an on the job training program and acquire knowledge and

skills as a future professional in the field of environmental and sanitary engineering.

Emergency Response Coordinator, Tabangao - HSE
Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation – Tabangao Refinery

My internship training at PSPC-Tabangao Refinery targets the following fields of

Sanitary Engineering*:

1. Environmental Engineering 4. Wastewater Engineering

2. Environmental Management 5. Fire Protection

3. Solid Waste Management

Office etiquettes and both written and oral communication were technically part of

development during my internship training. A more detailed aspect of training is presented

below.

a. Personal

The internship training I had at PSPC-Tabangao Refinery took 500 hours. With

this, I learned to cope up with the differences among personality of people around

me. I can assure that there is a great deal of development in my personality and

some of which are:

 Always stays positive despite pressure

 Looking for enjoyment in every given tasks

 Productive and always assure there is learning everyday

 Accepting tasks with efficiency

 Always asking questions if instructions are not clear

 Good relationship with co-trainees and supervisors

[Narrative Report – PSPC Tabangao] [Batangas State University Main II] | Page 3 [OJT 500] | BSSE
With these abovementioned development, I am confident that after

graduating as a Sanitary Engineer, I am ready in the field of professionalism

which is one of the goals of students who undergone internship training.

b. Interpersonal

This part of training development helps me to initiate, maintain, and manage

positive social relationships with a range of people during the internship period.

The highlight of my interpersonal training is the high sense of belonging and

learning to live and work with others, thus I also developed the following:

 Working as a team under work pressure

 Good listening skills / communication skills

 Open to constructive criticisms and room for improvements

 Respect to staffs and workers and understanding peers

 Management skills

Most of the time, I talked a lot with diverse people from various contractors of

PSPC-Tabangao Refinery. This is because our department handles most of the trainings

such as Bike, Confined Space Entry, Hydrogen Sulfide, Permit to Work, Working at

Heights, etc. With this, I am introduced on a busy working environment to which good

communication skills are vital and important.

VI. Training Assessment in Relation to Student Outcomes

As indicated in the training plan, the student outcomes are as follow:

Student Outcomes
1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering
problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and
mathematics.
2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet
specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and
welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and
economic factors.
3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences. ✔
4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in
engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must

consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic,
environmental, and societal contexts.
5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together
provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment,
establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation,
analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw
conclusions.
7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using
appropriate learning strategies.

The training I had at Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation – Tabangao Refinery

under HSE Department provides a platform of improvement for me to effectively

communicate with a range of audiences that includes company staffs, contractors and even

co-interns. Various activities in the department helped in improving my communication

skills may it be verbal and non-verbal ranging from doing email works up to

communicating face to face for dissemination of information. Proper and effective

communication is vital in a professional setting/environment.

Moreover, recognition of ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering

situations and making informed judgments was improved during my stay under the HSE

Department. With the launching of PITSTOP 2019 (Maintenance Shutdown), various

environmental incident reports were given at the department. As part of PCO works, there

is a need to inspect and to investigate the incident reports and make a professional move to

solve the problem. With this investigations and inspections, I am able to understand the

scope of work and how informed and smart judgments could help in solving industry

[Narrative Report – PSPC Tabangao] [Batangas State University Main II] | Page 34 [OJT 500] | BSSE
problems which might have great impact in the environment. Also, the department

heads/supervisors are always conducting walkabout (site visit) to which I am also being

asked to go with them. I was able to actually see the incidents if there were any, and was

given the chance to give engineering opinions on it.

Professional responsibilities were improved drastically because my supervisors are

on-hand in training me to become a professional during my internship. They tasked me

with various activities ranging from small office works such as housekeeping of important

environmental and emergency response files up to actual site inspection and participation

to a Multipartite Monitoring Team meeting. Daily inspection and visit at the waste storage

facility of the refinery was also given to me to which I was able to actually inspect and give

sound reports to the Environmental Advisor/PCO. With this, I was able to enjoy my stay

and training having a high sense of belongingness in the department I was assigned with.

Without a doubt, I really think that the experience I had at Shell Tabangao Refinery helped

me to improve my working ego and more importantly my skills in engineering.

At the course of the training period, I am able to apply the academic theories and

work values I learned at the academe. Furthermore, I am able to accomplished the

requirements of the training program for both industry and academe. I also learned a lot –

thus, increasing my knowledge in the field of Sanitary engineering with the help of Shell

Tabangao Refinery.
