SELF CURING CONCRETE

5. SCOPE AND INVESTIGATION

5.1 General

This scope of present investigation is to study and evaluate the strength

characteristics of silica fume concrete and normal concrete depending
upon the mix M25 grade of concrete, with silica content of 5%, 10% and
15% of micro silica in concrete for 7 & 28 days compressive strength and
flexural strength

5.2 Objectives

The specific objectives of the present investigations are as listed below:

 To conduct feasibility study of producing polymer by

using sodium polyacrylite high range water reducing
liquid admixture

 To study the effect of partial addition of micro silica to
the concrete and find its compressive strength for 7 & 28
days

5.3 TEST PROGRAMME

To evaluate the effect of adding polymer in different proportions to the

concrete for decreasing the workability of curing to the concrete than to
the normal concrete. In all mixtures same type of aggregates i.e angular
aggregates ,river sand and same proportions of fine aggregate to the total
aggregate are used.

The parameters studies are as follows:

Water cement ratio -0.5
Mix grade -M25
Polymer percentage -0.05%,0.10% and 0.15%
For each mix six concrete cubes of size 150mm*150mm*150mm and two
prism of size 100mm*100mm*500mm were cast and tested .The test
programme consisted to carrying out compressive test and flexural test on
the cubes and prisms .

5.4 Compressive strength test

Compressive strength test was conducted on the cylindrical

specimens for all the mixes at different curing periods as per IS 516

(1991). Three cylindrical specimens of size 150 mm x 300 mm were cast

and tested for each age and each mix. The compressive strength (f’c) of

the specimen was calculated by dividing the maximum load applied to the

specimen by the cross-sectional area of the specimen.

5.5 Flexural strength test

Flexural strength test was conducted on the specimens for all the

mixes at different curing periods as per IS 516 (1991). Three concrete

beam specimens of size 100 mm x 100 mm x 500 mm were cast and tested

for each age and each mix. The load was applied gradually till the failure

of the specimen occurs. The maximum load applied was then noted. The

distance between the line of fracture and the near support ‘a’ was

measured. The flexural strength (fcr) was calculated as follows:

SHREE RAMA EDUCATIONAL GROUP OF INSTITUTIONS 26

SELF CURING CONCRETE

When ‘a’ is greater than 13.3 cm for 10 cm specimen, fcr is

fcr = (P x l) / (b x d2)

When ‘a’ is less than 13.3 cm but greater than 11.0 cm for 10 cm

specimen, fcr

fcr = (3 x P x a) / (b x d2)

Where, fcr = Flexural strength of concrete (N/mm2)

P = Maximum load applied to the specimen (in Newton)

b = measured width of the specimen (in mm)

d = measured depth of the specimen at the point of failure (in mm)

l = Length of the specimen on which the specimen was supported

(in mm)

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

10.1 CONCLUSIONS :
Based on present experimental investigation the following
conclusions are drawn

 Silica fume mix requires powder contents, lesser

quantity of coarse aggregate , high range of super
plasticizer to give stability and fluidity to the concrete
mix.
 Thus, it can be concluded that the maximum
compressive strength of self-compaction concrete with
the combination of admixtures be obtained by adding
10% of silica fume.
 The workability of micro silica is equilibrium of fluidity,
deformation filling ability and resistance to segregation.
This equiliburm has to be maintained for sufficient time
period to allow for transportation, placing and finishing.
 With 10% replacement of cement with silica fume not
only compressive strength increases significantly with
age but also the split tensile strength at 28 days increases.
 Further, replacement of cement with fly ash leads to
drastic reduction in compressive strength.

10.2 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE INVESTIGATION

The following experimental studied can be conducted in future with

respect of high compressive strength and self-compaction concrete;

 The effects of adding of silica fume on the durability characteristics

of self-compacting and compressive strength along with one or more
admixtures.
 The effects of high temperature on the properties of self-compacting
concrete containing more than three admixtures along with silica
fume.

The effects of adding of silica fume on shrinkage and creep

properties on self-compaction and high compressive strength
concrete containing more than two admixtures.
