Lab 1: Airplane parts and control surface functions

Student Name: ID
Objective:

The objective of this laboratory is to gain the following knowledge:

 Familiarization with the airplane main parts.
 The airplane axes of motion, control surface functions and aircraft movements.
 How to control the control the airplane movement from the cockpit.

Lab resources:

1. Flight simulator x software.

2. Flight simulator hardware (Logitech G Flight set).

Flight simulator Overview

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment
in which it flies, for pilot training, design, or other purposes. It includes replicating the
equations that govern how aircraft fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the
effects of other aircraft systems, and how the aircraft reacts to external factors such as air
density, turbulence, wind shear, cloud, precipitation, etc. Flight simulation is used for a
variety of reasons, including flight training (mainly of pilots), the design and development of
the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control handling qualities.

Procedure

1. Run the flight simulator x steam edition application.

2. In the aircraft select window, select a conventional airplane with 4 turbofan engines.
3. Select Dubai airport as a departure airport.
4. Change the time to the day time to view the airplane parts clearly.
5. Once settings are set, you may start the flight by clicking fly now.
6. Change the view and locate the main aircraft parts.
7. With the airplane on the ground, examine the function of the pedals and control wheel
and observe the movement of corresponding control surfaces.
8. Observe how the aircraft takeoff and what is the setting of the throttle levers, flaps and
landing gear.
9. Use the pedals and control wheel to perform the following motion:
a. Yaw.
b. Roll.
c. Pitch.
Based on your lab observation, answer the following questions:

1. What motion occurs on the vertical axis?

a. Pitch b. Roll.
c. Yaw. d. Takeoff.

2. What motion occurs on the lateral axis?

a. Pitch b. Roll.
c. Yaw. d. Takeoff.

3. Ailerons are located on the _______ and control __________.

a. Vertical Stabilizer, Pitch b. Wings : Roll
c. Vertical Stabilizer, Yaw d. Wings : Pitch

4. The Elevator is located on the ________ and controls

a. Vertical Stabilizer, Pitch b. Horizontal Stabilizer, Yaw
c. Vertical Stabilizer, Yaw d. Horizontal Stabilizer, Pitch

5. Which part of the airplane creates the lift?

a. The pilot. b. The propeller.
c. The rudder. d. The wings.

6. What are the primary flight controls for an aircraft?

a. Wings, propeller, tail. b. Propeller, fuselage, ailerons
c. Wings, ailerons, rudder. d. Elevator, rudder, ailerons.
7. To roll left, the pilot should:
a. Rotate the control wheel left, left aileron will move up.
b. Rotate the control wheel right, left aileron will move down.
c. Push right pedal, left aileron will move up.
d. Push left pedal, left rudder will move left.

8. To pitch up, the pilot should:

a. Push right pedal, left aileron will move up.
b. Pull the control wheel, elevator will move up and angle of attack will increase.
c. Push the control wheel, elevator will move up and angle of attack will decrease.
d. Push right pedal, left aileron will move up.

9. What are the designated axis in the following figure:
