INTRODUCTION

This document contains the Structural Investigation Report for the 7-Storey RC Building to erect
proposed 3.0m wall-mounted monopole. The Site Name is PH1300525_Option 1 located 53 Banawe
Street. Brgy. Doña Josefa, Quezon City.

The main objective of this structural report is to design the propose wall-mounted pole to support
telecom equipment and other appurtenances, determine the structural integrity of the immediate
supporting members and elements of the reinforced concrete building affected by the proposed
tower installation and to develop/propose the required structural strengthening or retrofitting design
scheme if necessary, based on the results of the structural evaluation.

1. DESIGN PARAMETERS

Various loads are the forces that causes an impact to a structure’s safety. The weight of the
building, the number of occupants, their possessions, equipment and the environmental forces
comprise the parameters the building will be structurally evaluated for strength. These are dead
loads, live loads, wind or seismic loads acting in the most critical load combinations. If a building
was chosen as a telecom site, the existing building will need further evaluation to make sure that the
immediate supporting members can safely support the proposed telecom structure.

1.1. Material Strength:

Actual material strengths of the immediate supporting members shall be based on the specifications
stated in the As-built plans, if available. If As-built plans are not available, the following material
strengths shall be assumed.
Concrete Compressive Strength, fc’ = 20.4 MPa
Masonry Compressive Strength, fm’ = 10.34 MPa
Yield Strength of Reinforcement, fy = 276 MPa (main bars)
Yield Strength of Reinforcement, fy = 276 MPa (ties)
Steel Sections (A36), fy = 248 MPa
Fu = 414 MPa
1.2. Allowable Stresses:

As stated in Section 1.1, the material strengths stated in as-built structural specifications shall be
used for the building structural investigation. But in the absence of said documents, the assumed
value for the yield strength and ultimate strength of Grade 60 steel for main reinforcement for
diameter 20 and above and Grade 40 for diameter 16 and below and for ties were used. For the
reinforced concrete, the assumed compressive strength is 20.4Mpa. For the member capacity checks,
the investigation of existing columns, beams, slabs and walls, affected by the installation of a

proposed telecom structure, shall conform to the minimum reinforcement provisions of NSCP 2015,
ACI-318 or AISC-LRFD. If the existing member’s strength is not adequate, a retrofitting solution
shall be proposed.

1.3. Load Factors:

The basic load combinations to be used in the structural investigation shall conform to Section 203.3
NSCP 2015 7th Edition relative to Strength Design or Load and Resistance Factor Design.
a) 1.4DL (Ultimate)
b) 1.2DL + 1.6 LL (Ultimate)
c) 1.2DL + 0.5LL + 1.0WL (Ultimate)
d) 0.9DL + 1.0WL (Ultimate)
1.4. Building Loads

Dead loads are gravity loads which include the weight of materials and fixed equipment’s installed
in the building. Dead loads are permanent loads in which variations over time are rare or small
magnitude. The densities of the most common materials used in building construction are given
below:
a) Concrete Member - 24.0 kN/m2
b) Steel Member - 77.0 kN/m3
1.5. Superimposed Loads

The loads to be superimposed on the building’s immediate supporting members will be the
monopole’s support reactions. The support reactions used were taken from the structural analysis of
the 3.5 wall-mounted pole in accordance with NSCP 2015 7th Edition, ASCE 7 and
ANSI/TIA/222-G codes and standards with site-specific parameters for Wind Loads defined in
Section 2.5.1

2. DESIGN ANALYSIS METHODOLOGY

The STAAD.Pro software was used to perform the structural investigation on the immediate
supporting members (i.e walls, and slabs) of the existing building. STAAD.Pro is a general-purpose
modeling, analysis and design software developed by Bentley in USA. Dead loads were calculated
based on the user input member sizes and wind loads were applied from 0o to 315o at 45o interval to
cover all worst-case conditions possible based on the parameters outlined in Section 2.0 above.

The program generates, among other things, the necessary output results pertaining to steel
reinforcements required for reinforced concrete members or the utility ratio (UR) for steel
members.

In the absence of As-built plans, the existing building was analyzed considering the existing loads
and the reinforcement results would be assumed to be the existing conditions. The tower loads are
then superimposed to the building and the previous results are then checked if the building is still
capable of carrying such additional loads.

3. STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF WALL-MOUNTED POLES

The proposed wall-mounted pole is 114mmØ x 6mm thk (Schedule 40) x 3m. Said pole was
checked for structural adequacy to support loads defined in Section 2.5.2. The lateral deflection and
twist of the unsupported length of the pole shall not exceed 1°.

4. ANALYSIS OF THE IMMEDIATE SUPPORTING MEMBERS

Wall-mounted pole reactions were applied either as joint loads or concentrated loads. These
reactions are extracted from the separate STAAD.Pro analysis of the proposed wall-mounted pole.

Ideally, wall-mounted pole supports should be installed directly on top of the building’s columns.
But in actual situations and due to site-specific space restrictions, the wall-mounted pole supports
are installed on top of the slab supported laterally by the masonry wall. Since minimal weight
resulting from the tower is to be added to the primary girders, local analysis of the immediate
supporting members will suffice for the analysis.

5. STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATION RESULTS

5.1. Wall-mounted Pole Check

Wall mounted pole was designed as a couple force resisting cantilever structure, meaning two (2)
supports acts as couple forces to resist moments generated by lateral loads to the pole. Material
strengths of the pole conforms to Section 1.1 of this report, considering an ASTM A36 pipe.
Structural analysis considered is the direct analysis method conforming to AISC 360 requirements.

PH1300525_Option 1
DITO TELECOMMUNITY PROJECT FTK 9

The direct analysis method is a second order analysis resulting to amplified lateral loads due to
geometrical deformations of steel. Forces from the amplified forces are then checked against limit
states imposed by AISC 360.

The table below summarizes the utilization ratio and deflection of the pole as per AISC 360
equations.

Pole ID Size (mm) Utilization Ratio Deflection & Twist Remarks

114mmØ x
Pole 1 0.58 21.26mm, 0.371° Okay
6mm thk
114mmØ x
Pole 2 & 3 0.195 5.88mm, 0.058° Okay
6mm thk
5.2. Parapet Wall Check

Parapet wall was considered to have been constructed using concrete hollow blocks, satisfying ACI
530 minimum requirements with 220mm thickness. Failure was assumed to be pure flexure.

In absence of an as-built plans, wall dowel bars were assumed to meet ACI 530 minimum
requirements of at least 300mm spacing. After loading the proposed 3.0m wall-mounted pole, there
are no additional reinforcing bars required as shown in the table below. Thus, the parapet walls are
ADEQUATE to support the proposed 3.0m wall-mounted pole.

Actual Required
Section (mm) Remarks
Reinforcement Reinforcement
10mmØ @ 300mm 10mmØ @ 300mm
220 thick Adequate
O.C. O.C.
5.3. Floor Slab Punching Shear Check

The Slab was checked for local shearing, a 100mm thick slab was assumed to carry a 2.00 kN
spread out on a 250x250mm Base Plate. Calculation shows that the thickness is adequate for the
required shear force. Thus, the parapet walls are ADEQUATE to support the proposed 3.0m wall-
mounted pole.

Shear Capacity
Section (mm) Required Shear Force Remarks
(Two-way)
100 thick 91.91 kN 1.98 kN Adequate

6. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

From the results of the structural investigation, the wall and slab supports are ADEQUATE to
support the proposed 3.0m wall-mounted monopole.

For the installation of the tower, it is recommended using 250x250x12mm mounting plate on both
sides of the wall secured by 20mm through and through anchor bolts. Base Plate shall be
300x250x12mm with 20mm post-installed chemically bonded floor anchors. Actual details can be
seen on the detailed drawings.
