CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction
Homework is an important part of the learning process in school. It can be either readings or be written.
It is a common task given by the institution to us students. It can be given almost every day or every week
depending on the adviser. Cooper (1989) defined homework as work assigned by educators for students to carry
out during nonschool hours. When educators assign homework, they need to take into consideration student
ability level and how after-class activities impact student performance (Cooper, 2001).
Prior to the 20th century, society felt that homework was meant to discipline children's minds (Cooper,
Robinson, & Patall, 2006). The brain was seen as a muscle that needed to be exercised, mostly by memorizing
important information. Since memorization was believed to be an at-home activity, homework was favorable
among educators (Cooper, 1989).
Although giving homework has its positive effects to students, too much homework may cause a negative
effect to a student’s social and behavioral development. At the tum of the 21st century, public perceptions of
homework shifted once again. Parents began to express concern for their children and the amount of stress they
were feeling (Cooper, Robinson, & Patall, 2006). At this point in time, there were a lot of mixed feelings by both
educators and parents about the role of homework in children's education. Homework was said to have possible
detrimental effects on students' mental well-being and its purpose and value was questioned (Cooper, Robinson,
& Patall, 2006).

Time Management
Homework improves time management. Many experts who provide professional homework help
claim that dealing with home assignments regularly helps a student manage their time better. Solving your
tasks, you’ll not only increase your knowledge on the needed subjects but also improve your skills with
managing time. It makes a student more disciplined and they would be able to set their priorities straight ahead
for they are given homeworks after school. If a student has a lot of home tasks to deal with, it’s likely that
he/she won’t have the time to procrastinate, having plenty of home tasks to solve, you might not have the time
to engage in all activities that you’ve planned for the day. As a result, you’ll have to learn to prioritize your
actions and drop some entertaining activities for the sake of more important things.
According to a popular website named "Homework Help Desk", it confirms that if a student regularly deal with
different tasks, they'll be able to calculate how much time they're likely to spend on each particular homework
assignment. In the end, they'll know how much free time they'll be left with after a students' work and will be
able to plan his/her day better.

https://collegecures.com/2017/homework-help-time-management/

Homework helps students learn to complete long term tasks on schedule. Since there are many
types of home assignments that a student cannot complete in one day, like creating a research paper, for
example. If they learn to manage their time properly and deal with such assignments in time, it’ll greatly help
them in the adult life. It’s full of long-term planning. The motive behind the exercise of homework is to keep the
student abreast with the daily goings-on of the class and through thorough practice improve the student’s
foundation in a particular topic. Besides those, homework develops one’s researching capabilities since often it
extends beyond what is just being taught at school; it is a furtherance of the student’s knowledge and for that the
student often has to spend a quite an amount of time looking up the internet or the library for some kind of aid.
(Globe Teacher, 2017)
Students, therefore, are forced into putting their priorities to check and order them accordingly. In future, when
in employment, these students have to meet several such deadlines and then it will be this exercise of homework
that would come in handy. In addition, homework helps with time management by enabling students to order

their priorities. In this way, students get clear up some time for themselves and engage in things they love
doing, have a hobby. He/ she can binge-watch TV shows, have a movie-marathon, go on a long drive and what
not. Yet all of it without compromising on the important stuff since they will learn, eventually where to draw
the line.

Homework is an important part of engaging students outside of the classroom. It carries educational
benefits for all age groups, including time management and organization. Homework also provides students
with the ability to think beyond what is taught in class.
But the negative effects of it is also larger than what is expected. Homework can affect both students' physical
and mental health. According to a study by Stanford University, 56 per cent of students considered homework a
primary source of stress. Too much homework can result in lack of sleep, headaches, exhaustion and weight
loss. The not-so-good news is these benefits only occur when students are engaged and ready to learn. But, the
more homework they get, the less they want to engage.
Homework can affect students’ health, social life and grades. The hours logged in class, and the hours logged
on schoolwork can lead to students feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated. Navigating the line between
developing learning skills and feeling frustrated can be tricky. Homework is an important part of being
successful inside and outside of the classroom, but too much of it can actually have the opposite effect. Students
who spend too much time on homework are not always able to meet other needs, like being physically and
socially active. Ultimately, the amount of homework a student has can impact a lot more than his or her grades.
On its positive side homework is an important determinant of student test scores. Relative to more standard
spending related measures, extra homework has a larger and more significant impact on test scores. However,
the effects are not uniform across different subpopulations. Specifically, finding additional homework to be
most effective for high and low achievers, which is further confirmed by stochastic dominance analysis.
According to some educational research, homework is often associated with greater academic achievement. It
improves the student's memory and thinking skills. When a student gets homework from his or her teacher, the
student tries to get it done in a most effective way to get good grades.

Benefits of Homework
Homework is an integral part of instructional programs and life-long learning experiences. For a new
skill to become automatic or for new knowledge to become longlasting, distributed and sustained practice is
necessary. (Willingham 2002, 2004; Marzano, 2001). Homework provides reinforcement, practice, application,
transference, and enrichment of what is taught in class and requires students to integrate skills included in
curricula. It also prepares students for meaningful class participation and fosters a closer home-school
connection and ongoing parental involvement in the student’s education. As children complete their
assignments, they become more invested in and responsible for their learning. Homework places demands on
students that help them to develop mental skills such as concentrating, following directions, organizing
materials, solving problems, and working independently. It offers a way for students to develop a sense of
competency and independence. The most helpful homework assignments are carefully planned by teachers and
have direct meaning to students.

Criteria for Meaningful Homework
Assignments Research identifies key characteristics of quality homework assignments. Welldesigned
homework assignments relate directly to what is being taught in the classroom and extend students’ learning
beyond the classroom. According to studies, student achievement rises significantly when teachers regularly
assign meaningful homework and students conscientiously do it. Homework is most useful when teachers
carefully prepare the assignments, thoroughly explain it, give examples for completion, anticipate and address
potential difficulties, and give prompt comments and criticism when the work is completed. To make the most
of what students learn from completing homework, teachers need to prepare assignments as carefully as they
design classroom instruction.

Beliefs about the importance of homework have wavered over time. Prior to the 20th century, society felt that
homework was meant to discipline children's minds (Cooper, Robinson, & Patall, 2006). The brain was seen as
a muscle that needed to be exercised, mostly by memorizing important information. Since memorization was
believed to be an at-home activity, homework was favorable among educators (Cooper, 1989).

Achievement
There have been numerous studies that investigate the effect that homework has on student achievement.
Over the years, the studies have become more complex as researchers found that there were numerous variables
that needed to be controlled in order to truly find how homework effects achievement. Some of the most basic
studies compared the achievement of students given homework assignments with those who were not given any
homework (Cooper, 1 989; Cooper & Valentine, 2001; Trautwein, Koller, Schmitz, & Baumer, 2002; Dettmers,
Trautwein, & Ludtke, 2009). In addition, these studies ensured that the students who were not assigned
homework did not receive any other treatment that would compensate for the lack of athome study time. The
results of these studies showed that the groups of students given homework had a higher level of academic
achievement than the students who were not given homework (Cooper, 1 989; Cooper & Valentine, 200 1;
Trautwein et al., 2002).

The Table 2.0 shows that homework in terms of Social Development is agree when it comes to the perception of
the respondents. According to Willingham, (2002) and Marzano, (2001). Homework is an integral part of
instructional programs and life-long learning experiences. It also prepares students for meaningful class
participation and foster a closer home- school connection and ongoing parental involvement in the student’s
education.
Homework is an important part of engaging students outside and inside the classroom. It carries educational
benefits for all age groups, it also provide students with the ability to think beyond what is taught in class.
It is a practice work which helps students revise on what they've learned that day which is also an important part
of learning process in school.
It is one of the recipe to being a successful person. However, homework may be an extra work to
do at home but it critically improves a person's way of decision-making or how much they can handle different
challenges in different situations. By this, they will not just improve themselves but then they can also have the
sense of encouragement. They are able to share their thoughts and experiences throughout their lives. It is
because the purpose of homework does not only make you do something for school but it is for you to grow as a
better person and influence the others by your knowledge and learnings.

The table 2.1 shows that the Behavioral Development of a grade 11 students in terms of homework activities are
helpful in improving their priorities and how they manage their time with its totality at agree form. According to
Trautuein et al. (2002). There have been numerous studies that investigate the effect that homework has on
student achievement. The results of these studies showed that the groups of students given homework had a
higher level of academic achievement.

In terms of behavioral development, homework is very effective in enhancing life perspective on a student. It is
one of the recipe to being a successful person. However, homework may be an extra work to do at home that
but it critically improves a person's way of making decision or how much they can handle different challenges

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY

This chapter presents the summary of the findings, so conclusion drawn from the findings
and the corresponding recommendations. This study was taken with the general objective of determining the
Impact of Homework Activities to students' behavioral and social development.

Major Findings of the Study

In terms of the profile of the respondents, majority of them are female and are from ABM
(Accountancy, Business and Management) strand. The over all totality of our study concludes on the respondents
answer of agree. There are no negative impacts of homework activities to students behavioral and social
development. But nevertheless, most of the study give them positive behavioral development, like homework
helped them develop self-discipline, manage their time, develop their creativity and handle work under pressure.

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, the researchers concluded that homework activities has a critical impact on
mostly on their behavioral development than their social development in accordance to the insights of NDU-
SHS Grade 11 students.
Since the behavioral development gives a more realistic change to the students that is why they preferably do
homework activities which not just made them have extra work or gain extra grades at school but, it helped
them figure things out more easier in a strategic way and aid them to deal with different challenges in life, being

more vulnerable in exploring and finally, knowing and learning their inner behavior to further develop
themselves.

They also agreed that the impact of homework activities to student’s behavioral development is by having
discipline. They also ensure that their priorities and skills will be developed in a way of making homework
activities.

Recommendations
The following recommendations are presented to the NDU-SHS Grade 11 students to let them know
which or what can improve themselves and for the teachers to help them to have an idea on what should be the
best way possible to improve a student’s behavior and sociality with the impact of homework activities:

1) For the students, the researcher recommended that the students should manage or schedule a time to study on
a regular basis in order for them to improve their performance by making homework activities.
2) The students should not just do homework for grades and/or for the school but, they should also reflect, adapt
and learn more about the homework activities that are given by the teachers, this can help them improve
themselves more.
3) For the teachers, allow students to make homework in class in vacant time to make sure they understand the
instructions and concepts. This allows to resolve any problems and answer questions that would not be
otherwise be answered if done at home.
4) Students should never procrastinate. They need to be organized as much as possible and get rid of
distractions.
5) Teachers should also allow students for some flexibility in time and place of study depending on the
completion tasks or in other words, utilize whatever works best for them.
