• An Act to provide for the registration of architects and for
matters connected therewith

• Enacted by Parliament in the Twenty-third Year of the


Republic of India 31st May, 1972

• This Act may be called the Architects Act, 1972

• It extends to the whole of India

• It shall come in to force on such date as the Central


Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette,
appoint.

BACKGROUND - Architects act 1972


(1)The Central Government may, by notification in the Official
Gazette, make rules to carry out the Act.

(2)In particular without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing


power, may provide such rules

a.the manner in which elections shall be conducted, the terms and


conditions of service of the member of the Tribunal

b.the procedure to be followed by the expert committee in the


transaction of its business and the powers and duties of the
expert committee and the travelling and daily allowances
payable to the members

c.the particulars to be included in the register of architects

d.the form in which a certificate of registration is to be issued

e.the fee to be paid

f.the conditions on which name may be restored to the register

g.the manner of endorsement

h.the manner in which the Council shall hold an enquiry

i.the fee for supplying printed copies of the register

j.any other matter which may be provided by rules under this Act

 Nomination of Candidates - Any person
qualified to stand for the election may be

Procedure of election

proceedings for the election of the remaining members

• number of such candidates exceeds the number of members to be elected


- publish their names and addresses in the Official Gazette , entered in the
voting paper

• If a poll is found necessary - send by post to each elector a letter of


intimation , numbered declaration paper containing the names of the
candidates , a voting paper cover and an outer cover

• elector who has not received the voting and other connected papers -
request for fresh papers

In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) and (2) of section
45 of the Architects Act, 1972, the CoA, with the approval of the Central
Government, made the Council of Architecture Regulations 1982.
45.(1)The Council may, with the approval of the central Government may
make regulations not inconsistent with the provisions of 1972 Act
(2)In particular and without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing
power, such regulations may provide for -
a.the management of the property
b.the powers and duties of President and Vice president
c.the summoning and holding of meetings, the times and places at
which such meetings shall be held, etc
d.the functions of the Executive Committee
e.the courses and periods of study and of practical training
f.the appointment, powers and duties of inspector;
i.the standards of professional conduct and code of ethics to be
observed by architects
