2 Purpose
2.1 The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that Qatar Gas OPCO production facilities
located Onshore; Coastal & Offshore are painted / lined with Anticorrosive coatings
for protection against corrosive effect of atmospheric, marine & service environment.
2.2 To set procedure for maintenance painting of facilities necessary because the existing
protective coating has completely or partly deteriorated or failed and that the technical
integrity or safety of equipment is impaired and thereby to achieve maximum technical
and economic benefits from this specification.

3 Scope
3.1 This specification defines the minimum technical requirements to be met with regards
to selection of coating system, coating materials, surface preparations, applications
method, Quality checks, inspection & performance testing of applied coatings on
equipment & structures to provide protection against atmospheric & marine
corrosion, abrasion and impacts for maintenance painting of Qatar Gasfacilities.
3.2 Painting systems indicated in this procedure are based on Industry Standards & the
experience of Corrosion Engineering (Integrity division – Engineering & Ventures
dept.), acquired during their involvement with the design, construction, operation and
maintenance painting of processing units and facilities for corrosion protection.
3.3 The painting specification shall also be applicable to facilities which are covered
externally with Thermal Insulation & Fireproofing materials and internally with linings.

4 Conflicts & Resolution

4.1 All conflicting requirements between Protective Coating Procedure requirements
contained herein; Coating manufacturer’s instructions; Referenced documents and
Industry standards shall be brought to the attention of the Coating Inspections -
Corrosion Engineering group – Integrity Division of Engineering & Ventures for
resolution.

4.2 New Painting system & Recommendations can be submitted for company approval at
any time and at the supplier / manufacturer / contractor expenses.
4.3 Any waivers of any clause of this procedure shall be submitted for written approval by
QG – Corrosion Engineering (Integrity Dept.- Engineering & Ventures)
4.4 The Contractor &/or his Subcontractor may not use negligence of submitting a waiver
for approval as an argument for not fulfilling any of this procedure requirements.

Appendix 2:
12 FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES OF EACH COAT
12.1 Surface Cleanliness
To ensure good coating adhesion it is essential that the surface to be painted is dry
and free from rust, dirt, dust & debris that might prevent the paint adhering to the
surface. Roughening of the surface in order to improve the adhesion may be required
12.2 Stripe Coat
The life of any protective system is determined by dry film thickness of anticorrosive
coating system present on weld-seams, sharp edges, bolts & nuts, these being the
critical 20% of surface area where coating breakdown begins therefore all critical areas
should be given extra stripe coat of consecutive coating material.
Stripe coated &/or Spray painted weld joint shall not be abraded
Given more attention to above areas will extend life of maintenance coating system.
12.3 Primer Coat
Anticorrosive properties rely on presence of inhibitive pigments in primers.
Primer applied to correct dry film thickness will provide sufficient protection against rust
creep in case of mechanical damage to coating afterwards, while in service.
12.4 Tie Coat
Tie coat of mid coat shall be applied on porous substrate of Zinc Silicate primer coat to
minimise popping effects. Sweep blast cleaned aged coating in dark colours are
provided with tie coat to enhancing colour hiding before light coloured finish coat.
12.5 Mid Coat
Mid coat enhance overall protection and provide good intercoat adhesion.
Incorporation of lamellar pigments like Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO), Aluminium, and
Talc reduces or delays moisture penetration, decreases permeability to Oxygen,
improves strength and improves penetration of binder resins.
It also provides recoatability with enhanced adhesion for top coat (colour hiding).
12.6 Top Coat
Top Coat gives the required colour, gloss and surface resistance of coating system,
providing first line of defence against weather, sunlight, condensation impact, abrasion
and chemical attack.

15. PAINT APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

15.1 The paint shall be applied in accordance with the paint Manufacturer's product data
sheet, which shall include the mix ratio, the method of application, the use of thinners
andover-coating times
15.2 The dry film thicknesses shall be as specified in paint system for particular
application. Areas with inadequate coating thickness shall be thoroughly cleaned
and abraded, and additionalcompatible coats shall be applied until they meet the
required film thickness.
15.3 Painting shall not be performed when the temperature of the surface is less than
0
3 Cabove the dew point of the surrounding air or when the relative humidity of the
air is more than 85% unless local conditions dictate otherwise and the Company
Inspector is in agreement.
Guidance on the estimation of the probability of condensation can be found in ISO
8502-4.
The measurement of these conditions is the responsibility of the painting contractor.
15.4 In addition, paints shall not be applied on surface under the following conditions:
 when the surface temperature is greater than 45°C
 when there is the likelihood of an unfavorable change in weather conditions
within twohours after painting
 when there is a deposition of moisture in the form of rain, condensation & frost
 when the available light is less than 500 lux

15.5 If condensation, rain, dust or other foreign materials contaminate the surface of a
coating which is not dry to the touch, the paint shall be removed, the surface re-
cleanedand fresh paint applied in accordance with this procedure
15.6 Extra coats of paint shall be applied on the areas where the shape and/or plane of
application result in thinly applied coatings, e.g. at edges, welds, corners etc
15.7 To compensate for these effects, stripe coats of paints shall be applied (normally
applied first, so that they will be covered by the full coat)

18.4 Climatic conditions for application

 Temperature of substrate at least 3°C above dew point,
 Maximum humidity 85% RH (90% for inorganic zinc silicates),
 Ambient temperature (>10 °C for epoxy, >5 °C for polyurethane)
 Weather conditions – Existing and Forecasted

18.5 Paint Application

 For inorganic zinc silicate: maintain record of spraying with fresh water to enhance
hydrolysis and results of MEK test: Level 5 according to ASTM D4752.
 State of curing of primer and of each coat before application of next coat
 Wet film thickness for each coat immediately after application
 Monitor interval between coats (in accordance to product data sheets)
 Number of coats applied as per recommended paint system
 DFT of each coat and of the final system according to ISO 19840
 Appearance and color of finishing coat
 Painting & Preservation of fasteners like nut & bolts on bolted flange connections.

18.6 Adhesion Test ISO 2409 & ISO 4624

The tests shall be carried out only when the paint system is completely dry and fully
Polymerized
 For coating system of DFT less than 200µm, adhesion test shall be cross cut test as per
ISO 2409 and acceptance result shall be No. 0 as a minimum
 For coating system DFT more than 200µm, adhesion test shall be pull-off test as per
ISO 4624 and acceptance result shall be
- more than and equal to 3Mpa minimum for coating on External surfaces
- more than and equal to 4Mpa minimum for coating on Internal surfaces
Test coupons may be used for adhesion test of paints applied for immersion services

18.7 Holiday test for Integrity ASTM D 5162

The tests shall be carried out only when the paint system is completely dry and fully
Polymerized& also as per manufacturer’s product data sheet
Porosity of the coating shall be checked across the entire surface using wet sponge or
electrical brush for immersed services and buried or below ground surfaces.
Company inspector shall mark position of defects and porosity shall be repaired as per this
procedure.

18.8 Visual Test & DFT checks

 Visual inspection shall reveal no defects such as grit inclusions, pitting, low DFT, Very
