Accountancy 45 – Take Home Comprehensive Exam

PART 1: EBAY

1.) Clients want an MC’s expertise or accurate, up-to-date information he can provide to explo
re their underlying needs which involve virtually any area of business like eBay. He can advise
eBay on ways to improve in marketing, advertising, and provide detailed advice on cost effec
tive approaches to improve a business plan.

2.) Document Management System stores and tracks documents. It makes eBay ensure cont
rol over how activities are undertaken and achieve standardization.

Enterprise Resource Planning System and Management Information System allows peopl
e to communicate in different locations and in a shared database which increases eBay’s prod
uctivity while saving time and decreasing costs.

3.) Cookies are small text files that are automatically created by the browser and stored on the d
evice. eBay use cookies and similar technologies that remain on the device only as long as the
browser is active (session cookies), and also those that remain on the device longer (perman
ent cookies).

4.) As what eBay is known for, it is where the world goes to shop, sell and give. eBay uses an e-co
mmerce platform to run commercial transactions electronically over the internet and that’s w
hat eCommerce corporations do.
a.) I say, why not? eBay can expand its market, this will make TV no longer be a one-way com
munication channel. T-commerce will make it a two-way street where viewers can interac
t with and purchase from their favorite brands from eBay’s market. This has the potential
to both increase sales and profits.

b.) eCommerce creates complexity that has a huge impact on internal control systems becau
se there’s the need to assure the necessary trust in electronic commercial transactions, th
us enabling the implementation of real time auditing practices. eCommerce companies st
ill need human beings such as accountants to help mitigate financial risks.

c.) Ideas for online banking transactions came up sometime-1980’s while e-commerce becam
e possible in 1991 when the Internet was opened to commercial use. But despite of this fa
ct, the creative process of development for e-banking were probably set off after many c
ompanies started e-commerce. They both grew alongside the Internet.

d.) Cookies are tiny pieces of data that eBay put in the customers’ web browser to store data
about their surfing and item-viewing habits. Through this, eBay can collect information to
manage their interaction with current and potential customers.

5.) Risks of Competition, Brand Image, and Rise of T-Commerce:

Amazon topped 1 while eBay ranked 2nd. Amazon sells own branded items which is a compet
itive advantage because eBay doesn't sell any own brand products. Maybe it’s time for them
to do so. Also, with the rise of t-commerce, eBay might also consider adopting it.

6.) eBay’s CSR thrusts:

 Affordable and clean energy
 Decent work and economic growth
 Responsible consumption and production
 Climate action
 Partnerships for the goals

a.) Bill Gates’ thrusts are not that much different from eBay’s because Microsoft also focuses
on the most significant interests through its corporate social responsibility initiatives whi
ch emphasize human rights (like eBay’s decent work), environmental sustainability (like e
Bay’s affordable and clean energy), and business transparency.

7.) Environmental accountant will work with the management to determine the cost to incur reg
arding environmental compliance. He’ll use his accounting skills to help save the environment
itself and also, be working with the eBay to better understand, track, and quantify its environ
mental footprint as it enables more circular commerce.

8.) A fraud accountant can discover false sale transactions and tampered information on the digi
tal supply-chain where e-businesses such as eBay are using with the intention to deceive and
manipulate financial information and transactions.

Part 2: USJ-R

9.) The relationship between the priest and school is the primary governance feature of the scho
ol that the board derives its existence and role from. On the path to sustainability, the board’
s success takes many forms: increased levels of engagement, broader bases of support, soun
d business practices, transparency and accountability.

10.) In Church Accounting:

 Fund accounting (used primarily by churches) focuses more on measuring the incomi
ng and outgoing funds than profits/loss.
 The funds are deemed to be restricted, unrestricted, designated, and endowment.
 The financial transactions are mainly cash – the receipts and payments. A detailed fin
ancial statements will not be required.

11.)
Silliman uses Budget Information System that centralizes budget/planning information, a
nd Delphi Information System which works with construction and development of informatio
n systems. Both are beneficial to USJ-R for they help reduce data error rates and makes scho
ol easier to model future outcomes.

IS Beneficial to USJ-R:
 Student Information System (SIS) supervises student-related activities, manage stude
nts’ records at school and all student-related functions/administrative functions of a u
niversity or a chain of educational establishments.

 Multi-school ERP systems ensure that multiple branches of a single school work effici
ently and uniformly. It also helps systemize processes and rules across branches to en
sure that students have a uniform learning experience across branches.

12.) Yes, USJ-R can. For example:

 USJ-R can create an e-commerce platform to sell their school merch (an online school
store) such as souvenirs, shirts, books and many more to facilitate convenient buying
for students or alumni especially those who are located outside of Cebu.

 USJ-R can adopt e-commerce for selling courses such as Massive Open Online Course
s- an online course aimed at unlimited participation, open access via the web, and pro
vide interactive courses with user forums to support community interactions among
students and professors. There’ll be no real geographical boundaries, USJ-R can go gl
obal.
