This morning we’re going to discuss about Types of Business According to its Activities.
I want you to listen very carefully, because at the end of the lesson, you are all expected to:
● define service business, merchandising business, and manufacturing business.
● give examples of businesses on each type of business
● compare and contrast the types of business according to activities.

● Service Business
 Provides intangible products (products with no physical form). It offers professional skills, expertise,
advice, consultations, and other similar products.
 Performs services for a fee.

Examples: barber shops and beauty parlors, repair shops, banks,


accounting and law firms, dry cleaning establishments,
schools

● Merchandising Business
 It is a type of business that purchases finished products and resells them to consumers.
 This type of business is also known as "buy and sell".
 They make a profit by selling the merchandise or products at prices that are higher than their
purchase costs.

Examples are: book stores, sari-sari stores, hardware stores, department stores

● Manufacturing Business
 This type of business buys raw materials and uses them in making a new product that will then be sold
to customers.
 buy materials, convert them into products, and then sell the products to other companies or to the final
consumers.
 Unlike a merchandising business, a manufacturing business buys products with the intention of using
them as materials in making a new product. Thus, there is a transformation of the products purchased.
 A manufacturing business combines raw materials, labor, and factory overhead in its production
process. The manufactured goods will then be sold to customers.

Examples are: shoe manufacturing businesses, car manufacturing plants

● Hybrid

 It is a type of business that may be classified in more than one type of business.
 A restaurant, for example, combines ingredients in making a fine meal (manufacturing), sells a cold bottle of
wine (merchandising), and fills customer orders (service).

Additional information:

There are businesses that may be classified under more than one type of business. A bakery, for example, combines
raw materials in making loaves of bread (manufacturing), sells hot pan de sal (merchandising), and caters customers’
orders in small coffee table servings of ensaymada and hot coffee (service).

Nonetheless, these companies may be classified according to their major business interest. In that case,
restaurants are more of the service type – they provide dining services.

includes resource management, farming, conservation, ranching, and sales.

Examples: Farming, Poultry, Crop production

Activity – Jingle Me

Mechanics:
1. The class will be divided into five ( 5 ) groups. Each group will be assigned to one type of business. Group 1
will be assigned to service concern, group 2 to merchandising, group 3 to manufacturing, group 4 to hybrid,
and group 5 to agricultural business.
2. Each group will make their own jingle about their assigned type of business.
3. Each group will be given 10 minutes to make their own jingle.
4. Each group will present to the class their jingle.
