Problem Sheet #3

Ch 6 Glencoe
Forces and Friction Worksheet

1. A 10 N force is applied to a 25 kg mass to slide it across a frictionless surface. What is the acceleration of the
mass? How fast is it moving after 20 s?

2. A 25 N force is used to push a box across a floor against a frictional force of 14 N. The box accelerates from
rest to a speed of 4 m/s in 16 s. What is the mass of the box?

3. A box weighs 300 N. A force of 20 N will slide it across a floor at a constant speed. What is the mass of the
box? What is the acceleration of the box?

4. The coefficient of friction on a surface is 0.25. A box requires 100 N to slide it across the surface. What is the
weight of the box?

5. Two men are standing on a frictionless ice surface holding opposite ends of a rope. One man (mass = 80 kg)
pulls on the rope with a force of 250 N. The other has a mass of 60 kg. What is the acceleration of each man?

6. A box of mass 10 kg requires 20 N to slide it across a surface. What is the weight of the box? What is the
coefficient of friction between the box and surface?

7. A rocket accelerates from rest to a speed of 400 m/s in 40 s. If the mass of the rocket is 12,000 kg, what force
is needed to accelerate it? What force is needed just to balance its weight? How much total force must the
engines provide?

8. A 10 kg shotgun accelerates 0.025 kg of buckshot from rest to a speed of 100 m/s in a distance of just 0.5 m.
How much force is used to accelerate the shot? How much force does the gun recoil with?

9. How much force must it take to accelerate a normal car (1500 kg) from rest to a speed of 25 m/s
(about 60 mph) in 10 s?

10. An equipment box from "ICEORAMA" falls from a cart onto the arena ice. The coefficient of friction
between box and ice is 0.05. The equipment manager rushes out and ties a rope to the box. Find the frictional
force under the following conditions: (a) the manager pulls horizontally on the rope with a force of zero; (b) he
pulls on the rope with a force of 16 lbs; (c) he pulls with a force of 12 lbs; (d) he pulls with a force of 6 lbs. The
box weighs 240 lbs. Ignore static friction.

11. When you push a 1.80 kg book resting on a tabletop it takes 2.25 N to start the book sliding. Once it is
sliding, however, it takes 1.50 N to keep the book moving with a constant speed. What are the coefficients of
static and kinetic friction between the book and the tabletop?

12. A box weighing 30 N is on a horizontal floor. The coefficient of static friction is 0.30 and that of kinetic
friction is 0.25. Find the frictional force under the following conditions: a) no additional forced is added, b) a
force of 5 N is applied to the east, c) a force of 9 N is applied to the west, d) a force of 10 N is applied to the
south.

13. Hopping into your Porsche, you floor it and accelerate at 12 m/s/s without spinning the tires. Determine the
minimum coefficient of static friction between the tires and the road needed to make this possible.

14. A baseball player dives into third base with an initial speed of 7.90 m/s. If the coefficient of kinetic friction
between the player and the ground is 0.41, how far does the player slide before coming to rest?
