Story Writing
A story is the telling of an event, either true or fictional, in such a way that the listener experiences or learns
something just by the fact that he heard the story. A story is a means of transferring information, experience,
attitude or point of view.
v

Writing stories with given outlines:

• Read the outlines, clues carefully and try to understand the main plot of the story.
• Do not leave out any point and maintain the order of the events.
• Connect every part so that they appear to be linked.
• Introduce dialogue, wherever possible, to make the story interesting.
• The story should be written in simple English and in the past tense.
• Give a title based on the main idea of the story. (A proverb or idiom may be used as the title)

11
Sample Story
Here are outlines and the story that follows is based on them.

Akbar’s court----two men----Samsher and Raghav----each claimed that he was the master---- the other
servant----Samsher had gone to Afganisthan----left property for Raghav to look after---- he refused to
return his wealth---- Birbal smiled----said he could read minds----asked both men to lie down with
their faces towards the floor---- ordered a soldier to cut off the servant’s head----soldier confused but
took out his sword----Raghav ran to the king----begged for forgiveness----Birbal was rewarded----
intelligence and presence of mind

The Real Master

One day two men named Samsher and Raghav came to Akbar’s court. Samsher said, “Greetings my king. We
have a problem. I am Shamsher and this man Raghav is my servant. I went to Afganisthan for a few weeks and
left all my wealth and property with Raghav so that he could look after it. When I returned, he claimed that he
was the master and refused to return all my property.” Akbar was confused and did not know who the real
master was. Akbar called for Birbal and told him to find out who the real master was. Birbal smiled and said, “I
can read minds.” He instructed both the men to lie down on the floor with their faces downwards. He told one
of the soldiers, “Cut off the servant’s head.” The soldier was absolutely confused but he came and stood near
both the men. In an instant he drew out his sword and flashed it. At that moment one of the two men , Raghav,
ran and fell at emperor Akbar’s feet and cried, “Forgive me lord, I am the real servant.” Akbar ordered him to
be put into prison and rewarded Birbal for his intelligence and presence of mind. Shamsher got back all that
rightfully belonged to him.
Now read the given outlines and fill the mind map that follows.

Mighty king ruled Roshanpur—wanted people to be happy—no heir—-wanted to find an able, kind
person—one night—disguised as a beggar—reached the nearby market— fell into a roadside pit—a
battalion of soldiers passed by and said that it was not befitting for them to rescue a beggar—they
performed greater deeds like protecting the borders—two farmers returning from the field—did not
want to waste time after a day’s hard work—a group of traders didn’t want to dirty their hands—king
lost hope—realised no kindness was left in people’s heart—a boy with cheerful face – assured him—
brought a rope—helped the king out—the boy was an orphan—homeless—found his successor—soon
crowned him as the prince in a glittering ceremony.

7) In a morning walk, three persons step off together. Their steps measure 75 cm, 80 cm and 90 cm
respectively. What is the minimum distance each should walk so that all can cover the same distance in

Sol: Find the least common multiple (LCM)

Thus, the LCM of 75, 80 and 90 is 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 5 x 5 = 3600

So the required minimum distance is 3600 cm.

8) A roll of ribbon can be cut into lengths of 64 cm or 80 cm without any ribbon being left over. Find the
minimum length of ribbon in the roll.

Sol: To find the minimum length of ribbon in the roll to cut into lengths of 64 cm or 80 cm, find LCM

64 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
80 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 5
LCM = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 = 320
The minimum length of ribbon in the roll should be 320 cm.

Sol: To find the least number of sheets of paper required to make notebooks containing 32 or
40 or 48 sheets, find LCM

32 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2
40 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 5
48 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
LCM = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 × 3 = 480

480 sheets are required to make notebooks containing 32 or 40 or 48 sheets .

10) The HCF of two numbers is 40 and LCM is 60. If one of the numbers is 30, find the other number. Is
this a valid question?
The product of two numbers is equal to the product of HCF and LCM
LCM × HCF = First no. × Second no.
60 × 40 = 30 × ?
X = 60 × 40
30
X = 80
The second number is 80, but this is not a valid question because HCF cannot be greater than either
of the numbers.
