--------------------
Repression, control, manipulation and elimination of enemies assisted in
the establishment of the Soviet state, and helped maintain it in power, but
could not, in the end, prevent its collapse.

The state that was the USSR was sustained by more than just policing and
force. No amount of revisionist history can erase the reality of millions
controlled, imprisoned and killed, but there was much more to the USSR's
one-party state than this. Whittock tells a more complex story of the
combination of cruelty, co-operation and compromise required to build and
run a one-party state. Much of this is indeed the story of the role played by
the secret police in creating and sustaining such a form of government, but
it is much more than simply a 'history of the secret police'. This is because
the 'police state' which emerged (in which dissent, both real and
imaginary, was undoubtedly policed, threatened and ruthlessly eliminated)
was more than just the product of the arrests, interrogations, executions
and imprisonments carried out by the secret police. The USSR was also
made possible by a battle for hearts and minds which led millions of people
to feel that they really had benefited from the system and had a stake in the
new society.

This is an examination of a key aspect of twentieth-century history which still

impacts on the twenty-first- century world: the Russian Revolution and the one-
party state of the USSR. The book focuses on the role of repression, terror and the
political police in making the Soviet regime possible and sustaining it from 1917 to
1991, while also challenging popular misconceptions and myths about the USSR.
Whittock examines the complexity and history of building and maintaining a one-
party state through repression and brutality; but also through harnessing idealism,
compromise and co-operation. The book will provide both a major overview of how
such a repressive regime developed and survived. Whittock makes use of the latest
scholarship; his clear and engaging narrative is fast-paced, and includes anecdotes,
personal insights and reflections from those living through the events.

Selling points:
- an insightful, fresh look at the Soviet Union which shows that policing and force
alone could never have sustained this state; millions were successfully led to believe
that they have a stake in the new society

- an exploration of the complex combination of cruelty, co-operation and

compromise required to build and run a one-party state

- a concise, single-volume history of the rise and fall of the Soviet state from 1917
to 1991 and the role of the secret police in its various forms.

Martyn Whittock has taught history at secondary level for thirty-five years. He is a
lecturer in local history and has written numerous textbooks for the educational market
and also books for adult readers, including on Viking and Anglo-Saxon history. He has
been a consultant for the BBC, English Heritage and the National Trust and has written
for Medieval History magazine and archaeological journals. He is the author of
NORSE MYTHS AND LEGENDS (with Hannah Whittock), A BRIEF HISTORY OF
THE THIRD REICH, A BRIEF GUIDE TO CELTIC MYTHS AND LEGENDS, and A
BRIEF HISTORY OF LIFE IN THE MIDDLE AGES – all Robinson titles. NORSE
MYTHS AND LEGENDS was sold to EDAF in Spain and Pegasus in the USA.

Praise for NORSE MYTHS AND LEGENDS: A terrific, detailed introduction of these
wonderful stories and the pantheon of characters in them… Their writing is vivid and
lively… A great addition to any library – San Francisco Book Review; With recent
volumes, such as Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology and J. R. R. Tolkien's posthumously
published The Legend of Sigurd & Gudrún, appealing more to readers strictly interested
in creative takes on classic Norse tales, this title attracts new readers by offering solid
retellings and contextual information that serve as a valuable introduction to this rich
tradition - Library Journal

Buna,

THE MAP OF THE AFFECTIONS, by writer, award-winning poet, and none other than the winner of this
year’s Nadal Novel Award, Ana Merino.

We’re all beyond pleased because, despite the fact that this is Merino’s first novel, she swept the jury off
their feet with her subtle yet poignant style, and a story with very special blend of traditions—a result of
being Spanish by birth, but American at heart, after having lived for over two decades in Iowa, where she
teaches creative writing in the MFA program at Iowa University.

Here you have the links to download the full text in Spanish, an English sample and the press clipping:

The Map of the Affections throws us deep into the Heartland, deep into the life of a small community, a
place where soldiers return from war only to realize nothing will be the same again, where kindergarten
teachers falls madly in love only to have to walk away, where young boys, hidden atop trees, learn all
there is to know about sex and lust, where housekeepers mourns the death of those who were not as
lucky to make it across the border, a place where tornados and a senseless murder come to sweep it all
away…

All of us are marked by the magnetic force of affections and the way we decide to relate with the people
around us..

And as Merino’s characters confide in the reader and in each other, somehow, through the "ifs" and
"buts," grace and catastrophe, a mesh is woven that captures life itself, the full spectrum of human
experience.

The Map of the Affections follows the trail of the people who make up the
hidden stories of places––places that evoke absences and strange events, where inexplicable crimes
take places, where private and family tensions abide and the drive for goodness is the only thing that
permits people to go on living.

Valeria, a young schoolteacher in a secret relationship with Tom, who is thirty years her senior, is
confronted with a sentimental dilemma and wants to understand the meaning of love. In the tiny town
where she lives, Lilian disappears without a trace while her husband is on the other side of the world.
Obsessed with women, Greg, frequents a brothel on the outskirts of town to get away from his problems,
until he gets found out in the worst way possible.
Through moments like these that make up the life of a small rural community, we are plunged into the
day-to-day mysteries of its inhabitants. Not only will their lives cross over the course of fifteen years, but
they will be influenced by the magnetic force of affections, the randomness of chance, the poetic justice
that at times gives rise to the most unexpected occurrences.
