Irbesartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist used to treat hypertension. It works by inhibiting the vasoconstriction and aldosterone release caused by the renin-angiotensin system, leading to decreased blood pressure. Irbesartan should be taken as 150 mg twice daily with or without food and is contraindicated in pregnancy, especially the second and third trimesters. Common side effects include dizziness, stomach upset, and decreased urination. Nurses must properly assess patients, administer the medication correctly, and monitor for side effects and compliance.
