PART B: (10 pts. each). Use tables from textbook and class notes.
1. Find the expected production in LCY for a wheel-tractor hydraulic excavator with a heaped
bucket capacity of 2 ½ - cy. The bucket fill factor is 0.50 the material is wet clay, and the
efficiency is 50 minutes per hour. The average depth of cut is 10’-0, and the maximum
depth of cut is 25’-0. The average swing angle is 80 degrees.
2. Find the expected production in LCY/hr. of a 1-cy. hydraulic shovel with a front-dump
bucket. Material is well blasted rock.. Fill factor (bucket) = 0.7, Swing average angle =
140 degrees, Efficiency factor = 0.75
3. Find the expected production lcy/hr for a dragline with a 2 cu yd capacity, swing angle of
80 degrees, average depth of cut of 8ft. The material is common earth, soil, swell of 25%,
and job efficiency of 45 min/hr. The fill factor is 0.80
5. Find the bank measure in CY of a pit excavation for a rectangular basement with an area
of 1,600 sq. ft., and the following elevations: (a) 7’-6”, (b) 9’-5”, (c) 6’-2”, (d) 8’-9”. If the
swell is 25%, how many 12-cy truck loads are needed?
6. Estimate the actual bucket load in BCY for a loader bucket whose heaped capacity is 8 cy.
The soil’s bucket fill factor is 0.75 and the load factor is 0.80.
7. Find the moisture content and the weight of water for a soil sample in natural state that
weights 195 lb., and weight after drying is 125 lbs.
8. Find the load factor and shrinkage factor of a soil that weights 1800 lb/LCY, 2950 lb/BCY,
and 3250 lb/CCY. How many BCY & CCY are in 1 million LCY of this soil?
9. Find the base diameter and height of a conical spoil soil pile with: 140 BCY excavation, 37
degrees angle, and 25% swell.
10. Find cut and fill volumes for a 45’ x 45’ module. Construction is set to build at elevation
103. The data is shown in the following module: Letters are the stations, and numbers are
the elevations.
