GEOSYNTHETICS  are planar polymeric materials used in contact with soil, rock, earth or any other

geotechnical engineering related material, as an integral part of a man made project or system to perform a
single or multiple functions. The five key functions performed by geo-synthetics are separation, filtration,
reinforcement, drainage and containment. Geo-synthetic products can be classified into two groups,
permeable type and impermeable type. Can be further classified as Geotextiles, Geotextile related products
and Geo-membranes. Most common ones are geo-textiles, geo-grids, geo-membranes, geo-nets, geo-cells,
geo-synthetic clay liners, geo-pipes, geo-foam and geo-composites. They have applications in the field of
civil, geotechnical, transportation, geo-environmental, hydraulic and private development applications
including roads, railroads, embankments, retaining walls, canals, erosion control, waste landfills, land
reclamation, breakwaters, jetties, groins, revetments, aquaculture, agriculture and mining. Geo-synthetics
when used in building modern day infrastructure, helps  in achieving higher efficiency and better
performance of the structures built  in reducing usage of conventional aggregate materials  in achieving
high benefit - cost ratios  in building more sustainable / environment friendly structures.

They are a part of technical textiles and are covered under the Segment - GEOTECH by Ministry of Textiles,
Govt. of India. Even though geo-synthetics is in use globally for over many decades, in India it is still at a
nascent stage. There is a very huge gap in the potential for demand Vs actual consumption of these products
in India for various reasons. To bridge this gap / develop the market, Reliance Polymers Division has taken
a holistic approach in the last 4 – 5 years with support from our Customers. Some of the measures being
taken up are to  conduct workshops / awareness programs among user agencies  develop pilot projects
to demonstrate the performance and establish benefit to cost ratios  provide data in-puts based on field
performances to Nodal agencies for framing guidelines / incorporation in relevant Codes of practice 
develop / facilitate our existing and new Customers to set up production lines to manufacture various Geo-
synthetics products listed above..

The momentum has picked up and it has started giving us the desired results. Our Polypropylene Resin Sale
to our Customers (Geo-synthetic Product Manufacturers / Processors) in this sector in India is growing at
20% year on year. Currently around 20 to 30% of their produce is consumed in Domestic Market and the
balance 70 to 80% is sold in Export Market. Huge potential for demand growth in Domestic Market coupled
with immediate opportunities in Export Market makes it a prospective area for firms looking for new lines of
manufacturing / investments / business expansions and / or diversification. This in the long run will increase
the consumption of these products at ground level and help India build a sustainable infrastructure apart from
creating enormous employment opportunities in this sector.
