CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter comprises statement of the problem, background of the study,

scope and delimitation, significance of the study, definition of terms, conceptual

framework and theoretical framework.

Context and Rationale

For over decades ago, herbal medicines were the most popular means in

curing illness. Banton have different ways on doing it. Herbal medicines are slowly

fading in terms of medical.

Modern medicines are known in Banton. Modern medicines have good and

bad effects to our body but we still use it. It looks like a miracle pill for us because it

made the impossible possible.

Bantoanons are not a progressive island, which have no technologies and

medicines on hand. They mostly prefer to those faith healer and herbal medicines to

cure the illness. However, they are not sure if it will be cured.

Having different belief is not helpful in terms of medical because you bet the life

of someone. Doubting on what way we cure our illness gives us a rapidly heartbeat and

thinking if we choose the best. Giving them an idea and knowledge about the difference

between herbal and modern medicine and on what way it is perfect to use and no

Statement of the Problem

This study aim to determine the factors that affect the preferences of

Togong, Banice, and Balogo. (TOBAGO)

Furthermore, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the difference between herbal and modern medicines?

2. Which diseases are commonly treated with the herbal medicines? Modern

medicines?

3. How effective is herbal/modern in curing illnesses as perceived by the TOBAGO

residence?

4. What are the negative effects of taking modern medicines? Herbal medicines?

5. What are the factors considered by TOBAGO households in choosing between herbal

and modern medicine?

Background of the Study

For the past years, a majority of population in developing country like

Philippines depend on traditional and herbal medicines as their primary source of

healthcare medicines. It is according to a 1993 World Health Organization.

Traditional medicines refers to health practices, approaches knowledge, and

believes incorporating plant, animal, and mineral based medicines, spiritual therapies,

manual techniques, and exercises applied singularly or in combination to treat,

diagnose, and prevent illness or maintain well-being.

The main objective of this study is to determine the factors that affect the preferences of

the TOBAGO households between herbal and modern medicines.

The researchers will use survey research to achieve their main objective.

Survey research is the appropriate approach on this study because they are going to

represent the whole preference of the TOBAGO households.

Scope and Delimitation

This study will be conducted to determine the factors affecting the preferences

of TOBAGO households between herbal and modern medicine.

It will focus mainly on the three barangays (Togong, Banice, and Balogo). The

researchers choose this three barangays because it is near and to lessen the hassle for

having a hard time to budget their time, effort, as well as the expenses.

Researchers will hand out survey questionnaire to 15-20 households of

TOBAGO. This study will start on July 2019 and will end on March 20.

Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following:

Medical Personnel: It will serve as a guide in curing of illness. They can inspire

people especially those who do not have enough income.

TOBAGO Households: This study will give necessary realization for the households of

TOBAGO District and even in other districts in the municipality. Insights can be deduced

from the findings with will then empower them towards wise decision making by

considering the safety, long term effects, quality or effectiveness of the medication or

treatment, may it be herbal or modern.

Definition of Terms

Herbal Medicine

Medicinal plants used to cure illness. People use this for natural healing. There

are different kinds of herbal medicines. Each illness has specific herbs in order to cure.

Some people use it as an alternative for modern medicine especially those who cannot

afford to buy modern medicine.

Modern Medicine

Are those prescribed by doctors to intake for a certain illness. Perception

A belief or opinion of the people in a certain situation. It is based on how things seem.

TOBAGO

It is where the focus of the study consist of three barangays namely Togong,

Banice, Balogo, the respondents of the study will be randomly chosen are at in this

barangays.

DOH

Theoretical Framework

The researchers find their study as anchored to the following theories:

Unintended consequences of Purposive (Social) Action.

Robert Merton as cited by Klein man (2010) introduced the first social theory of

global health. This unintended consequences of purposive (social) action holds that all

social interventions have unintended consequences, some of which can be foreseen,

and prevented, whereas others cannot be predicted.

In addition, Peter Berger and Thomas Luck man’s social construction of reality as

cited by Klein man (2010) holds that the real world, no matter what its material basis is

also made over with socially and culturally legitimated ideas, practices and things.

The third social theory as cited by Klein man (2010) is that of social suffering this

theory holds that’s socioeconomic and socio-political forces can at times cause disease,

as is the case with the structural violence of deep poverty creating the conditions for

tuberculosis to flourish and for antibiotic resistance to develop. Moreover, it holds that

social institutions, such as health-care bureaucracies that are developed to respond to

suffering can make suffering worse.

Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE.

This chapter presents the various literatures and studies which have added

further knowledge on the study.

Foreign Literature

Since the beginning of human civilization medical plant have been used mankind

for its therapeutic value. Nature has been a source of medicinal agents for thousands of

years and an impressive number of modern drugs have been isolated from natural

sources. Many of these isolations were based on the uses agents in traditional

medicine. The plant-based, traditional medicine systems continue to play an essential

role in health care, with about 80% of the world’s inhabitants relying mainly on

traditional medicine of their primary health care (Owolabi et al.,2007).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO,1977) “ a medicinal plant” is

any plant, which in one or more of its origin contains substances that can be used for

therapeutic purposes or which are precursors for the synthesis of useful drugs. This

definition distinguishes those plants whose therapeutic properties and constituents have

been established scientifically and plants that are regarded as medicinal but which have

not yet been subjected to thorough investigation. The term “herbal drug” determines the

part/parts of a plant (leaves, flowers, seeds, roots, barks, stems, etc.)used for preparing

medicine (Anonymous, 2007a).

Furthermore, WHO (2001) defines medicinal plant materials to extraction

fractionation, purification, concentration or other physical or biological processes which

may be produced for immediate consumption or as basis for herbal products. Medicinal

plants are plants containing inherent active ingredients used to cure disease or relieve

pain (Okigbo et al., 2008). The use of traditional medicines and medicinal plants in most

developing countries as therapeutic agents for the maintenance of good health has

been widely observed (UNESCO, 19996).Modern pharmacopoeia still contains atleast

25% drugs derived from plants and many others, which are synthetic analogues, built

on prototype compounds isolated from plants. Interest in medicinal plants as are

emerging health aid has been fuelled by the risking costs of prescription drugs in the

maintenance of personal health and well-being and the bio prospecting of new plant-

derived (Lucy and Edgar, 1999).The on going growing recognition of medicinal plants is

due to several reasons, including escalating faith in herbal medicine (Kala, 2005).

Furthermore, an Increasing reliance in the use of medicinal plants in the industrialized

societies has been traced to the extraction and development of drugs and

chemotherapeutics from these plants as well as from traditionally used herbal remedies

(UNESCO, 1998).

Foreign Studies

Sullivan (2011) said that Prescription medicine and advances in medical

treatment have helped people avoid disability and death caused by disease, lowered

overall treatment costs, and has lowered death rates for heart diseases, stroke, cancer

and other deadly diseases for several decades.

According to Steven Salzberge, a prominent biology researcher at the university

of Maryland at College Park, alternative medicine is merely “cleverly marketed,

dangerous quackery.”

Salzberge noted that the biggest danger of alternative medicine is the patients

who see alternative practitioners will stop getting mainstream care altogether.

In contrast to alternative medicine, “modern medicine was framed around

success in fighting infectious diseases,” says Elizabeth Blackburn, a biologist at the

University of California at San Francisco and a Nobel Laureate.

Brown (1996) studied the wide spread anecdotal evidence that certain herbal

preparations of developing country’s indigenous herbal practitioners can reduce certain

symptoms of AIDS of the different therapies, he examined, the evidence on tradional

Chinese medicine using herb “Astralagus” which can stimulate the immune system and

thereby increasing the production of antibodies is the best.

Yunus (1986) argued that, for Bargladesh, implementing the WHO’S definition of

primary Health care in tgerms of modern medicine is fimacially impossible. Therefore, it

is imperative to use vast resources of indigenous herbal medicine.

Ling (1988) reviewed the use of traditional medicine in Malaysia. The article

presented information on 44 herbal plants that are used for the treatment of female

diseases, general health , prenatal, post-partum recovery and fertility control.

Traditional medicine has been practiced since ancient times in every culture

throughout the world and has been an integral part of human evolution and

development.

The evolution of Philippine traditional medicine is an interesting study that is

influenced by religion, mysticism, magic, superstition, folkloric herbalism and western

medicine.

In recognition of the deep seated practice of traditional medicine as an alternative

medicine as an alternative modality for treating and preventing diseases in the

Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) through its former Secretary Juan M.

Flavier launched the Traditional Medicine Program in 1992. This program aims to

promote an effective and safe use of traditional medicine.

Local Study

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) about 80% of developing

countries depend on traditional countries depend on traditional medicines for their

primary health care needs. They also have a keen interest in documenting the use of

medicinal plants by indigenous people from different parts of the world. The rich

histories of herbal medicines have been passing down through generations largely as

oral tradition. This study was documented that herbal medicines used by traditional

healers to treat and manage human diseases and ailments by some communities.

Fifty-two species of plants belonging to 28 plant families were reportedly use for

treatment and management of 42 diseases and ailments. Medicinal plants are

commonly harvested from loamy soil. Medicinal plants were prepared in the form of

decoctions (67%) and infusions (33%). Oral administrations of the herbals was most

(77%) common route of administrations whereas the least used routes were nasal (1%)

and rectal (2%). The results of the study show that the herbal, medicines used for

treatment and management of both common and specialized human diseases and the

factors of place and time are consider important during harvesting of plants for

treatments.

Studies have indicated that indigenous knowledge about herbal medicines is

continuously being lost through factors such as acculturation and biodiversity losses.

However, for further research and clinical studies herbal medicines lead to discovery of

new bioactive agents for treatment of ailments. They are remain source of new drugs

and new chemical entities.

There are researchers who manage to conserve herbal medicines not just for

home consumptions but also for the profitable source for future generations.

The Department of Health has been promoting products of medicinal plants as

alternative medicines. Their low costs and effectiveness will help many Filipino families,

announced the DOH secretary, as they have been a subject of “extensive research by

Filipino scientists”.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, 102 plants have been

“scientifically validated for safety and efficacy.” Ten of these plants are under different

stages of development, and that studies have been completed on Sambong, Lagundi

and Lagundialone. However, there are risks on using herbal medicines according to

Drug Safety 2004. It said that some herbal have a potential to cause serious adverse

events and fatalities, contamination, adulteration or substitution of botanical material.

The early 90’s seemed hopeful for the merging of Western and alternative medicine in

the Philippines. There was a burgeoning global movement towards alternative

therapies, a new-age allure for “natural” remedies; and in the Philippines, the

beginnings of herbal medicinal research and development. The TAMA (Traditional and

Alternative Medicine Act) was passed, providing a legitimizing boast to the alternative

medicine movement in the Philippines.

Yet the nature has many plants to offer to cure various diseases there came the

new interventions of different scientists and as time passed by healing plants are

replaced by new sets of medicinal drugs that affects easily without passing through

many process unlike with the use of plants.

Hypothesis

Q1: How effective is herbal/modern medicine in curing illness as perceived by the

TOBAGO households?

Alternative: If people will use herbal instead of modern medicine to cure illness then

they will have a fast recovery.

Null: There is no enough proof that herbal works effectively than modern medicine

Q2: What is the difference between herbal and modern medicine?

Alternative: If modern medicines are for free then people will tend to use them because

of its advantage.

Null: There is no significant relationship between the cost and benefits of medicine on

how the persons’ body reacts on it.

Synthesis

The ancient civilizations were known to have relied on power of herbal medicines

and even the modern world has adopted some of their practices

Ling(1988) reviewed the article which presented the information that 44 herbal

plants are beneficial to the womens health while Brown (1996) examined the evidences

that certain herbal of indigenous can reduce symptoms of AIDS.

Ling and Brown proved that herbal plants are useful in certain illness.

In contrast to herbal medicine, Salzberg strongly disagree for the use of herbal

medicine Because of its disadvantages.

Modern medicine has been highly effective in preventing and curing illness.

Sullivan (2011) said that prescribed medicines have helped people in many ways while

Blackburn believed that modern medicine was formed around successes and proven

effective.

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapters comprises the elements that are needed in the methods of

investigations such as research design, population and sampling, research locale,

research instrument, data gathering and data analysis.

Research Design

The researchers will study the factors affecting the preference of TOBAGO

Households between herbal and modern medicine. In this case, they will conduct

descriptive survey with some degree of comparative as an appropriate research design.

There is a need in knowing what factors affecting the households preference, for

their own sake and for the government to acknowledge problems that for places are

facing because of some factors like distance of their house from their health center,

financial status, advantages and disadvantages of the herbal and modern, it is where

comparative degree will takes place, and other certain factors.

Descriptive survey is the appropriate research design on this study because it

attempts to establish the range and distribution of some characteristics, and to discover

how these characteristics maybe related to certain behavior patterns or attitudes.

Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education

Banton, Romblon

Population and Sampling

TOBAGO District has a total population of 295 households. From this

population , the researchers will have only a sample of 30 households,1 respondent in

each, a total of 10 respondents. In able for them to select the 10 respondents they will

conduct simple random method in the solid District.

One of the best things about this method is the ease of assembling to sample

and it is considered as a fair way of selecting a sample from a given population. In this

method the researchers can make easy representation or generalization of the

population.

Research Locale

The research study will focus mainly on the District of TOBAGO (TOGONG,

BANICE, and BALOGO) wherein the respondents will be exclusively TOBAGO

residents. The researchers chose TOBAGO households as their respondents because

of a certain factors that they considered, especially the transportation. For the

convenience and financial concern, respondents of this study will be TOBAGO

households.

Research Instrument

In this research study, survey form questionnaire will be their research instrument

and by using the five level likert scale.

The following will be the validators for this study; Dr. Edmund Fababeir the

municipal doctor, Mrs. Anabel Fabrero and lastly Mr. Jaynes Flores.

The researchers chose the professionals as the validators of the study because

they have the ability and enough knowledge that can help the researchers validate the

questions correctly before giving it to the respondents. Mrs. Anabel Fabrero who is an

English teacher, Dr. Edmund Fababeir a professional doctor and Mr. Jaynes Flores who

is the teacher of research subject.

Data Gathering

Since the researchers study is a type of descriptive survey, they will use survey

questionnaires to be answered by the chosen respondents. Firstly, they are to give their

questions to their validators for further checking of the grammars and if the questions

are well structured. Secondly, they are to give the free-informed letter to the chosen

respondents for the convenience of actual handling of the survey questionnaires and

lastly the researchers will apply statistical or logical techniques to describe, illustrate

and evaluate data through the entire data collection.
