1/20/2020 RFP – Hopscotch

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
Hopscotch is soliciting proposals for immersive and experiential installations to be

included in our premier exhibition at the Hopscotch Gallery in downtown San Antonio

opening late 2019 – early 2020.

Hopscotch is a gallery and event space which features immersive and interactive art

experiences. We seek to create a platform for local and international artists to present their work,

mingle, and experiment with a wide spectrum of mediums and technology. Our aim is to elicit a

sense of joy and wonder in the space we curate; where our guests may explore beyond their day to

day reality. Along with this playfulness, we also believe art can be a vessel to tell stories and

illuminate important messages of the past, present, and future. We consider works which exhibit

thought provoking, profound and experimental qualities- in addition to awe-inspiring, novel work.

Our premier exhibition will include a multitude of contrasting styles and mediums.

The Hopscotch Gallery is a two-story space comprised of individual gallery rooms. Each artist or
collective of artists, selected to create an installation, will work within their independent room.

Hopscotch strongly believes in cultivating lasting relationships and a synergy with the local creative
community. In the spirit of giving back, a portion of our ticket sales will support local non-profit art
organizations.

1/20/2020 RFP – Hopscotch

CRITERIA

1. Immersive: We are primarily seeking immersive works which utilize multimedia, visual, and sound
elements. We welcome all artistic approaches; however curatorial priority will be given to
immersive pieces.
2. Durable fabrication: We expect a high volume of visitors over the span of the exhibition. While
care will be given to protect and maintain the installations, the proposed works must be durable
and designed to be repairable. Artists should plan for their work to be exhibited for a minimum of
six months. It must withstand the rigors of daily interaction with participants and be capable of
being operated unattended. Some special exceptions will be granted to work that does not fit this
criterion on a case by case basis.
3. Interactive/Reactive: We will look for concepts which outline an experience where there is a clear,
discernible reactivity to guest’s interaction to the artwork. While this is not a requirement, priority
will be given to installations that invite exploration and play, where several people may interact with
the piece simultaneously.
4. Inclusive: Installation themes and content should consider an audience of a wide demographic.
5. Distinct: We seek to offer the widest range of styles and approaches.
6. Memorable: We welcome art that will leave a lasting impression on visitors beyond the photos on
their Instagram feed.
7. Smart: We welcome art that engages the intellect as well as the senses.
8. Meaningful: We welcome art that is meaningful to the artist and/or visitors.
9. Social commentary: We welcome art that addresses issues in a compelling way.
10. Shareable: Installations that appeal to a visitor’s drive to capture and share experiences.
11. Accessible: Priority will be given to installations that are inclusive of visitors with disabilities.

Suggested approaches include (but not limited to):

DIMENSIONS

Each installation will inhabit a single room. Rooms will range in size from 350 – 1450 square feet, with the
majority of rooms falling between 450-675 square feet. Rooms are rectangular/square in proportion, and
most have ceilings with a height of 12 feet. One notable exception being a 26’ x57’ room with a ceiling
height of 25 ft. More specifics on rooms sizes/dimensions will be provided as the process progresses.

POWER

Rooms will be equipped with multiple power outlets and have access to a minimum of 20amps.

LIGHTING

Lighting can be controlled/altered to suit the installation/room. The rooms can also be blacked out to
maximize the impact of a light based work.

MODIFICATIONS +
RIGGING

Sound art is welcome, we will work with artists to create their desired sound environment while avoiding
sound leaks that may interfere with neighboring installations. However, the rooms are not fully
soundproofed.

SOUND

Objects can be attached to ceilings and walls, and all surfaces can be painted, including the floors.

Wi-Fi will be available, but ideally we will not depend on Wi-Fi to operate the installation.

VISITOR TRAFFIC

Plan for 4-10 visitors in each installation at any given moment, with an expected flow of 100+ visitors per
hour.

BUDGET

The budget range of most accepted proposals will fall between $5,000-$20,000. We will assess the
economic feasibility of each proposed budget against the exhibition as a whole. Our goal is to facilitate
impactful pieces. If the proposed installation requires more resources such as expensive hardware and
tech, we will still consider the work should it exceed the target budget. However, we intend to select a
balance of installations across the entirety of the budget range.
